I usually only read this mag. when Liz is in it (and even then I usually just read the articles when Ken puts them up), but now I think I may subscribe. The dissenting opinions on the same page, page after page, are a little irksome, but oh well -- I can live with it. *ahem* In the Request Critics' Poll, _wcse_ is #13, ahead of records from Beck, the Beastie Boys, and Rufus Wainwright. Matt Ashare had this to say about it: "Once you get past all the she's-a-mom-who-still-rocks hoopla, which is just plain a silly argument, you realize that Phair writes the kind of hooks Chrissie Hynde would have killed Ray Davies for." Nicely put, eh? James Diers gets a little ignorant on my ass and calls Liz overrated, saying "Postindie pundits roundly approved Liz's latest for its assuredness, its more "mature" character in the wake of her relative commercial strides and recent motherhood. Who ever said we wanted her to evolve at all?" Jim Testa also says that, for him, good times this year were had in small clubs listening to obscure bands, not tearing the shrink wrap off _wcse_. Nonetheless, Evelyn McDonnell calls Liz an "established rule-shredder" (good thing) and J. Free says Liz "is the new Carole King by way of Janis Ian" (whatever *that* means). re: "last strings of sunlight, a Brigitte Bardot": If I'm not mistaken, Liz is saying that the stewardess looks just like Brigitte Bardot. In fact, I *know* I'm not mistaken because on the Girlysound version of "Stratford-on-Guy," Liz sings "and I swear that she looked just like Brigitte Bardot..." If it helps, you can rephrase it like this: "In the last strings of sunlight, the stewardess who looked like Brigitte Bardot came back and checked on my drink." (Btw, I love that "last strings of sunlight" phrase -- each time I listen to this song, the mental picture I get of this plane ride becomes more and more vivid). Brigitte Bardot, for those who don't know their film/pop-culture history, was a French '50s sexpot/icon kind of actress, and she's now an animal activist, I believe. - -Steve "We're talking such shit, we are talking such shit... I-69 runs thru town. I have never, ever figured out why, but it is an east-west road, regardless of how they're *supposed* to be numbered. It runs across Michigan from Port Huron (my end) to the other side of the state, where I think it goes south... They only built it a few years ago... but it is an east-west. Fellow Liz scientists, 1) I have enjoyed reading your Blondie posts (Jason, MrE, Greg B., Craig, Lani, Derek, et al). Did I miss something or am I the only Blondie fan on this list who has seen them live? Permit me to brag....... 2) It was the summer of 1979 in Houston. Debbie came out in a Santa Claus-red jumpsuit. "Hanging On The Telephone" and "Heart of Glass" were standouts. She sang, "I'm on E" and she must have been because she was hopping around the stage like a sexy kangaroo (is there such a thing?). Anyway, I was 18 at the time and had never even seen a girl up close. So, I put Debbie Harry under the microscope all night long. 3) Oh yeah, the band was great. The encore was that T.Rex song "Bang A Gong" (how do you spell it)? I'm not trying to offend any of the women on this list. But as a flushed Debbie jumped around singing the chorus "Get it on! Get it on! Get it on!" with blond hair contrasting against a red suit and a top zipper at an eye-friendly level, I witnessed the sexiest image I have ever seen. No one onstage has ever topped that for me and I've seen some robust female singers such as Liz, Madonna as well as the singers in Pretenders, X, Garbage, etc... Needless to say, Blondie posters adorned my dorm room walls that fall. 4) Has anyone else had such a life-affirming concert experience? What is the sexiest thing you've ever seen at a concert? Some one wrote about Liz singing "Flower" on her knees while rubbing her body. That sounded pretty flammable. Pixie, I'm not asking for a list here. Just a feeling. Debbie turned my eyes into pinwheels and my heart into mush. Liz nation, who has made you glad you were a man or glad you were a woman, as the Kinks would sing. 5) On another note, did you hear that because there are more sinners than saints in the world, Jesus is opening for the Devil on 12 East coast dates? 6) And Erica, how's this for a Natalie Merchant story? I saw 10,000 Maniacs play at a Dallas venue called the Bronco Bowl. This place is huge. It has a bar, a big bowling alley AND a concert hall. I got there early to see the opening band, Camper van Beethoven. As I was walking through the bowling area, who was bowling with some friends and having a good time? That's right, Natalie. 7) Thanks to Chuck for a great mix tape he made for me with Jen Trynin, My Bloody Valentine, Pavement and many others. I eat this tape for breakfast evey day. Therefore, I'm not cool. :( I just dont' have any exposure to indie rock, maybe. i don't know. Maybe I just don't like it. I can't say, cuz I haven't really heard it alot. Umm... shit I forgot what I was going to respond to. OH YES! The thing about "in the last strings of sunlight, a Bridgette Bardot..." I kind of think this is a reference to the stewardess. I don 't know what Bridgette B. looks like, but since she's a movie star from back in the day, I have an idea of what her style might be like. Anyway... so this stewardess has that 40s movie starlet look to her. Then again, the next line talks about Liz's eyes looking like when your circumstance is movie sized, so then she's referring to herself as like in a movie, so I don't know. Maybe SHE is bridgette b. The gig was probably one of the best i've EVER been to and i've been to a lot. It had to be good to outdo Neutral Milk Hotel's blinding performance in London in October. Galaxie 500 are a band. From Boston/New York. They were more famous in the UK, where they fitted in with the "Shoegazing" movement (pluuuueesseeee!!!). Rykodisc put out a great box set a few years back and it's well worth tracking down. When they split Dean Wareham went on to form Luna, who sound a lot like Television and are amazing live (pretty darn good on cd as well) while Damon & Naomi went on to form, err, Damon & Naomi. They're a lot quieter but just as beautiful. Check out both, i think Ryko have just re-issued their first 2 albums and their 3rd (Playback Singers) said on the sleevenotes that it was recorded for their cat. My idea of a good album. I believe some of the G500 cd's on the box set are of the enhanced variety and contain VIDEO FOOTAGE!!! So now you can se what Liz means. ALSO. Someone, i can't remember who, said that they were coming to London soon. How long for? Liz is due in March-ish so you could be in luck. There's some good gigs coming up as well so if you want any info drop me a line. If you get stuck when you get here i suggest you listen to GLR 94.9fm. Don't listen to Capital radio as it sucks big time and xfm is pretty lame (capital took it over and made it more mainstream). GLR seem to like Liz and play her stuff on one of it's saturday shows and have been claiming that she's going to go on the show when she comes over. It may be a BBC station, but it's pretty relaxed, although you won't hear any songs with swearing in! Ramble over. The year is nearly over. I haven't mentioned Alanis, DOH! Take care out there.
