Cool! Keep 'em coming! Secondly, I think you guys are over-analyzing the fact that Liz is opening for Al-anus. No, not my ideal double bill. But there are lots of weird tours these days. Hello, Wu-Tang-Atari Teenage Riot-Rage Against the Machine?!?!? Veruca Salt-PJ Harvey-Live? These things get put together by promoters, often without much rhyme or reason. Don't forget the Rentals opened for Al-Anus for a long time last tour, and I think Garbage was a part of that lineup at one time as well. Don't think about it too much. Just decide if you want to pay the ticket price for 30 minutes of Liz. Assuming that Liz doesn't cancel THESE shows in the 11th hour, that is. In Kansas City, I will be treated to Garbage with Al-anus instead of Liz, and I will be there. According to a couple of local promoters, I don't think Liz would be welcome back here anyhow. We should start a new thread: what was the first album you bought for yourself? Mine were _Road to Ruin_ by the Ramones and _Parallel Lines_ by Blondie, bought at the same time. I'm sorry, but it's too difficult to hold back forever. There's been a lot of boring, off-topic stuff posted here, advertised as on-topic, that has little to do with Liz, and I thought (and thought right) that now (during these crazy, topsy-turvy times) would be the perfect time to add some of my old-school attitude (like a lot of us are doing right now) to the generic insight (if "insight" sounds too much like I'm patting myself on the back, I apologize) I've been offering recently. "Once you've left a lonely rage on its own, it grows..." By saying that I've evolved past the point of finding Lilith Fair music entertaining, I was half-joking, admitting that we indie rock kids (although I can't really call myself that anymore) *can* be a bit snobbish at times. But how can you blame us when we've been "spoiled" by the goodness of Liz Phair's music? No, I don't like Lilith Fair artists. I don't like people who so obviously do not "get" Liz Phair but shout out that they're Liz Phair fans so often that it's downright embarrassing to think of industry people reading these digests and wondering if this is what Liz Phair fans are like. That, to me, is a lot more offensive than any attitude I may be inserting these days. And before you can say "Well, I'm sure the industry people would be MUCH happier to see that Liz Phair fans are a bunch of enraged-like-serial-killers spoiled brats," take into consideration that they're used to that -- ever read the Matador Bulletin Board? I'm (we're) tame compared to other snob-rock hot spots... Make no mistake, I am NOT alone in thinking this -- I'm just one of a handful of people daring enough to say it publicly. Basically, I was just being saracastic, trying to be "funny," and I actually can't believe that I'm now having to spell it out, in turn digging myself deeper, coming off as more of an asshole than I really am. Back to the Liz/Alanis shit -- I don't have anything more to add to what's already been said. Jason Long has made some really good points, anyway; there's nothing I can say that he hasn't already. His post (and I hope you all read it) was based in REALITY, and if you want even MORE reality (at least concerning Liz and this topic), go to the Matador Bulletin Board where you'll find posts from Liz fans, non-Liz fans (but not Liz-haters), AND Matador staff themselves. The posts that are there now are *must-reads*, and start under the subject "a little too ironic" The Bulletin Board, for those who don't know, is located at: http://disc.server.com/Indices/36273.html I apologize for being so rude -- I admit, I've been rude, more than necessary. I can just imagine what some of you will have to say to me now. It's too bad those of you who know exactly what I'm talking about don't step forward and say the things I'm saying... I'm not trying to be a hero or a martyr, I'm just saying things that a lot of people have been wanting to say for a long time now. Liz kicks Alanis's ass, no contest, in real life, so I think Alanis deserves some media punishment for deigning to allow Liz Phair to open for her. For one thing, Liz Phair should be the main act, and if anything, Alanis should be opening for Liz--although Alanis is really not even cool enough or talented enough to touch Liz Phair's guitar. I'm ticked about this Liz opening for Alanis business, but I figure Liz's record company probably forced her into it. Thinking that way helps me cope with the utter stupidity of the arrangement. In all honesty..i think someone smaller scale..I mean, ALANIS is "Alanis" the name itself causes mass hysteria in thousands of teeny boppers everywhere. NOt to say Madonna lures teeny boppers, but when PM DAWN opened for Madonna's FABULOUS 1993 GIRLIE SHOW TOUR, no one gave a rats ass for their set. Madonna was too big a name - the fans just wanted MADONNA MADONNA MADONNA! So when Liz Phair, a phairly unknown singer takes the stage for a 30-something minute pre-alanis set, the crowd isn't really gonna give a shit. Isn't really going to appreciate her. Many won't know dick all about her. They will want to see Alanis. Sure, some Alanis fans will have knowlege..some will even be fans, but in a big stadium, (I know LIz was exposed to this in LIlith, but the audience was different..that was a festival - there are more open minded people, because people are READY to be exposed to different artists, this is just "THE ALANIS CONCERT. PERIOD.) but in a big stadium, in which many don't give a shit about her, I think she is going to be recieved much differently than she has in the past. I don't think she is going to be appreciated. Who would I like to see her open for? PJ HARVEY SINEAD O'CONNOR NATALIE MERCHANT WEEZER!!!! BECK! MATTHEW SWEET Could you imagine a LIZ PHAIR/BECK show?? I just find Liz and ALanis to be a GIGANTIC mis-match. I think Liz should play to someone a bit smaller scale...like, an audience that could take the time to really LISTEN to a somewhat unknown act, maybe be more familiar with Liz, because she is opening for an artist who is closer to the same genre of music in which she belongs to. Personally, I would love to see Liz open for Beck. I really think that would be an incredible pairing. There does seem to be a fair amount of crossover already between the two artists' audiences, and I do think that those who were only there to see one of them would at least give the other a chance. I also must say, I'd love to see Beck and Liz collaborate sometime. Whatever resulted would surely be amazing. I also agree with those who have said that a double-bill with PJ Harvey would be ideal too. Liz has said quite a few times that she considers PJ and Courtney Love to be her contemporaries. They all did emerge at pretty much the same time, and are responsible for a great deal of the "Women in Rock" (such an overused term) movement that followed. They were the ones who helped to open the doors for many of the artists who followed. Honestly, I do have to say, if it hadn't been for successes like the one Liz scored with _Exile_, a lot of artists, such as Alanis, probably wouldn't have gotten signed, or at least not as soon as they did. Liz sold a considerable number of records with an album that wasn't particularly commercial, that received only minimal airplay, yet at the same time had a lot of major publications covering it and solidly connected with an audience that many people maybe didn't realize existed. I think a lot of the major labels looked around and saw this and tried to determine a way of exploiting it so they could cash in. Hence, a lot of artists with lesser talent that were more mainstream friendly got signed in the wake of this. The new breed were watered-down lyrically and musically, and were the recipients of a great deal of hype. The labels found a way to dumb things down to achieve greater mass appeal and make a lot of money, while filling a void that for the longest time no one knew existed. Back to the opening act thing, I also think that Pavement would be a good band for Liz to open for. Another interesting pairing might be to have Liz open for Garbage (they could both ditch the Alanis tour). And since Liz is doomed to playing arenas with Alanis, if we want to go grand scale here, why not have her open for the Stones? You can't argue that this pairing would be inappropriate. Liz not only loves the Stones, but there is a great connection there, as her Exile (In Guyville) was sequenced as a response to theirs (On Main Street). They could maybe both play sets consisting primarily of material from their respective albums. Craig "TheKingAdRock" asked: >I was just wondering if anyone here listens to one of the first >pioneers in women's rock...Debbie Harry and Blondie? You can count me in as a Blondie fan, I've loved them ever since I was a kid. I haven't heard much of Harry's solo stuff though, and what I have didn't do a great deal for me. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just didn't measure up to the greatness of _Parallel Lines_ and _Blondie_ (which I've had no luck finding on CD anywhere, and my vinyl copy is just about shot). Just out of curiosity, is _The Hunter_ really as bad as people say? That's the one album of theirs I've never heard. I >still like to sing along to the title track and emulate that tiger's >wail... AAOOWWW! I'm really not embarrassed that it was the first album I bought, but it seems like everytime I tell people it was, I get the strangest reactions. It's almost made me wonder if there's some sort of stigma attached to that album that I don't know about. You are right, Joan was, and still is, great. She's another pioneer for a great deal of what's happened in music this decade; a lot of musicians such as those in Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill have credited her as an important influence. Patti Smith is also another great artist who deserves recognition; I really do think that everyone needs a copy of _Horses_ in their collection. As for _I Love Rock and Roll_, I finally replaced my vinyl copy on CD last year after a bad breakup. I always seem to go on CD buying binges anytime a relationship ends, and I was also feeling quite nostalgic at the time. I forget what all else I bought, but I remember also getting CDs by the Ramones and the Violent Femmes that day. The ironic thing is that I didn't listen to any of the CDs much right away; whenever I'm feeling down like that, I always seem to gravitate towards _Exile in Guyville_ and Jen Trynin's _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ (not that I need to feel low to enjoy those albums; they do work for any mood, but at times like that, they're just that much better somehow). When I finally got around to playing Joan, I was glad to hear that it sounded as good as ever. Since Derek asked us all what the first album we ever bought was, I'm just kind of curious as to how old everyone was at the time? I was either six or seven and had saved up my allowance money to buy that Joan Jett album; even at that young age, I was really passionate about music. I would always bug my parents to buy me albums (they very rarely gave in, though) and would tape songs off the radio I liked. I knew how to use our stereo long before I could even tie my shoes. I also had a lot of cool babysitters as a kid, and was exposed to a lot of great music that way. My parents own music collections just didn't cut it, unfortunately. And Derek, since you've told us that the first albums you bought were by Blondie and the Ramones, I just have to ask: Were you born with great taste? I mean, overall I didn't do too badly that early on, but there is some stuff I liked that just isn't that great in retrospect. Also, I'm wondering, Cindy, did you ever get into the Pretenders at all?
