Hello all, As for the Liz opening for Alanis thread, who cares? She's playing. As for the jabbing between everybody, let's take one step back and two steps forward and realize that nobody means to hurt feelings(I hope.). Nobody's stepping to you, Snoop Dogg, so let's just act like a bunch of little Fonzies and what's Fonzie like? As for my year in review, I love lists and I can make one out of about any scenario, but this was a disappointing year for me. All of my favorite artists put out albums, but not many were terrific. wcse was my runaway #1 and just to prove how great Liz was, she even introduced me to my #2 album, Morcheeba's Big Calm when they shared an episode of 120 minutes. Other favorite albums of the year in no particular order: - -Sheryl Crow, The Globe Sessions - -Smashing Pumpkins, Adore(Disappointing, but still good) - -Ani DiFranco, Little Plastic Castles I haven't compiled my favorite songs list, but in my top 10 there's probably four Liz songs(What Makes You Happy, Polyester Bride, Johnny Feelgood, Headache). Good for her. Now that she WANTS her career, she's got options as to how she wants to go about it. Maybe this tour will influence her next album. 4) And, as I understand she's probably going over to Europe some time in the next year, this might be good practice in playing "in front of foreigners." She won't have all of those "Miss-indie-goddess" connotations attached to her, all those eyes staring her down. My guess is her audiences so far have been in one of two camps: 1) which is pretty much most of us, people who are pretty much in love with her and would clap if she farted, or 2) the somewhat "evil" contingent, either those "frat-guys" who just want to hear someone say that they want to be their blow-job queen, or the "So-You're-The-Future-Of-Rock-N-Roll, eh? Prove-it-to-me-playing-live" crowd that I'm guessing wanted to see her when the original fuss was made four to five years ago. So, now she's got an entirely new crowd to play to. You go, girl! Now, only if she'd come to Michigan again... It's been a great year of discovery, music-wise. It's only been in the last couple of DAYS that I've discovered Sleater-Kinney (thanks, Allison!) and Dar Williams (anyone ever heard the song "When I Was A Boy?" That song rules, off the "The Honesty Room" album). Earlier this month, Jen Trynin (though I must say, that "Gunshy Trigger Happy" album is really hard to find), and all of the Liz material (big kisses, Beautiful), and of course, WCSE, Album Of The Year. God, I love women. I haven't heard the song in a while (someone was gracious enough to tape it for me quite a while ago, but I've since lost the tape), but because of all of the recent discussions, I was inspired to order a copy of the CD it appears on, _Duck Rock_. Hopefully it will arrive soon. I do tend to talk about Liz on all of the other lists I'm on, though. In fact, the handful of times I've posted to the Joni Mitchell Discussion List, almost every single message had something to do with Liz (who has quite a few fans over there, by the way). I do try to get people to check Liz's music out who I think would appreciate her, just like I encourage people here to check out Aimee and Jen Trynin and some of the other artists I listen to. If people like one artist I listen to, the odds are favorable that they may like some others as well. Just out of curiosity, are there any other Mannlisters aboard here? Moreover, the melody of the chorus >seems to be lifted from some '70s pop song (ABBA?). Both of these >distractions take away a lot from the listening experience of the song. I think this was done intentionally. From what I've read about the soundtrack, each of the songs were to be written and recorded in a different past musical style, and were supposed to sound like actual oldies. One of the characters had an extensive collection of old 45 singles, and the soundtrack recordings were supposed to the songs on them. So, it makes sense that the song would musically reference other old hits; it's supposed to sound somewhat familiar while still being an original, and it has to have a "dated" quality to it. Personally, I think the song is a lot of fun and I enjoy it a lot. Then again, I'm also not familiar with the songs it seems to reference. Melissa Leigh wrote: >Do you think she would cut out the >song out of preference for the others? EIG has 18 tracks. Hmm, I don't know. Honestly, I just don't think "Russian Girl" would have worked very well on the version of _whitechocolatespaceegg_ that was released; I really can't imagine where Liz could have inserted the song into the track sequence and still have it flow nearly as well as it does. Also, for _Exile_, 18 tracks were necessary, given the conceptual device she used of sequencing the album to correspond with the Stones' _Exile on Main Street_. The reports also say that Liz recorded 36 songs for the new album, so it was obvious she had to cut a lot of them. In some of the interviews I've read, she's said something along the lines that she picked the songs that best represented the different aspects of her emotional life. I think we'll see which other songs she really favors when some of the others that were recorded start turning up on other releases, either as b-sides or soundtrack/compilation tracks. We've already had a few... Marlie wrote: >Third, I could've sworn hearing Liz sing about someone named 'Tracy' in >not one-but TWO of her songs....Girl's Room & Support System......who is >this????? I probably shouldn't admit this, but the album that contained their version, _I Love Rock-n-Roll_ was the very first album I ever bought. The music business is just that -- a business, and Liz is out to sell records and make money, and the best thing to happen to her would be for her to get more recognition in the mainstream. Supposedly, eight concerts opening up for Alanis Morissette are the ticket. BULLSHIT. I thought everyone knew that if _wcse_ was gonna sell a million copies, what it needed was a hit single and video. "Supernova" was a Modern Rock hit on radio and was played semi-often on MTV, believe it or not (you just had to be watching at the right time). "Johnny Feelgood" is this album's "Supernova," and hopefully it'll help the album sales. The key is *radio* & *MTV*, people. Not 8 dates on the Alanis tour. Liz knows it, Matador knows it, I thought you'd know it, too. That's why this is so fucked up. How many units do you think Liz'll move after her stint with Alanis? As illustrated in Nora's post, PJ Harvey opening up for Live did zilch for her album sales, and I agree, I don't think this will further Liz's career, either. Sadly, Liz has not yet received support from MTV or radio this time around -- "Polyester Bride" was released 1st because it had a more "Lilith Fair" sound to it, and that is most unfortunate, because neither radio nor MTV took to the single. I know you're trying to be *realistic* by saying that Liz isn't OURS and that she deserves mainstream recognition and sales, sales, sales!, but assuming that a tour with Alanis will get the job done is just wishful thinking. Those kids are gonna be there to see ALANIS, just like when I went to Lilith Fair, I was there to see Liz. But maybe that's a bad example, since there was no way I could've been converted by Lilith Fair, as I'm already too evolved to be impressed by Lilith Fair artists. Anyway, consider the PJH/Live thing as a better example. I'm also having a hard time believing this whole "Liz can and will have mainstream success!" thing because for her first two albums, Liz wasn't even sure herself if she wanted it, and with _wcse_, it seems that unless Liz compromises her artistic integrity next (or stops canceling tour dates), mainstream America isn't going to bite. How accessible do you think her music is? How many of you have played Liz for unsuspecting friends only to have them confused or bored or disgusted with her slight inability to sing in a conventional way? It happens more often than not. Would it be so bad if a Liz record never went platinum in its first year on the market and she was just relegated to Bob Dylan/Joni Mitchell/Elvis Costello status like Jorge (hi, Jorge) suggested days ago? The weaker part of my argument is that those who do take to Liz's music might be (gasp, I know) enjoying it on merely a superficial level, as I'm sure has happened thanks to a) magazine articles zeroing in on the sexual lyrics and b) the Lilith Fair stint, among other things. Who cares, right? It's a business, as long as people are enjoying it, it doesn't matter *how* they enjoy it: it's making Liz shitloads of money. Yeah, sure, but then we have to put up with vapid fans who enjoy but don't "get" the music and annoy spoiled brats like me. And so what if a bunch of spoiled brats get worked up over this -- posts like Fran's are at least *interesting* (which is more than I can say for some others) and real, which I dig. Rock & roll. I wish I had the guts to gather venom like that and apply it elsewhere, but I value my subscription. Bummer. I guess you could say that, for me, the positive side of this farce is that it gives assholes like me something to bitch about. Because if there was no bad news, we'd have nothing to bitch about, and if we didn't have something to bitch about, what would we do for the rest of our lives?! The bottom line (for me, anyway) is that I wish Liz would just put out a cool video for "Johnny Feelgood" and stick to her solo tour of the South, since hey, I bought a fucken $158 Greyhound ticket to see her in Dallas. Now she's coming to Pittsburgh (only 3 hours away from me) but I will not spend more $ on what would no doubt be a more expensive Alanis ticket. I should probably feel lucky that Liz is even touring & lucky to be alive, but I've already seen Liz live 4 times this year so this ain't anything new. It's just stupid. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 05:28:12 -0500 (EST) From: kiskos@webtv.net (Edward Kisko) Subject: Best of 1998 (not just music) So this is my 2nd post at 5 in the morning (I have insomnia), but I'm not doing it because I'm a moron, I'm doing it because these two posts combined would bounce (if my first post didn't already). Jimmy says that are better things to do than bitch about the Liz/Alanis farce, and he's right. Making lists is much more fun, so here goes (that sounds sarcastic, but it's not): I didn't even buy 10 1998 releases, but here's what I did buy (and do recommend): Beck, _Mutations_ I like this one better than Odelay because it's warmer, more human, and prettier. Don't get me wrong, Odelay is gold, but this is platinum. Solid from start to finish. Sheryl Crow, _Globe Sessions_ What can I say but read what Rolling Stone has to say about this in the latest issue. If you still think of Sheryl Crow as the annoying popster who sang "Beer Buzz Early In The Morning" and "Everyday is a Winding Road," think again. This is intelligent, funny, tuneful music, performed by a chick who handles more instruments than you know. Sonic Youth, _Thousand Leaves_ Like Rolling Stone said, it gets better, you just gotta give it time. Interesting, as always. Robert Pollard, _Waved Out_ This one is only half-good, really, but the songs that are good are *really* good. Too bad he didn't just release an EP. New GBV in a few months anyway. My new favorite pastime these days seems to be getting high and listening to Liz Phair. _Whitechocolatespaceegg_ isn't as great as Exile in Guyville (this has been proven scientifically - in a lab), but 100 spins and half as many joints later, I realized what's really going on: these songs are more like soundscapes. The music fits the lyrics almost perfectly on every song. (EIG was more like a simple in-your-face, girl & her guitar mind-fuck that proved preppy suburban rich girls know just as much about rock -or more- than everyone else.) Listen to "What Makes You Happy," for instance. It is NO coincidence that Liz chose the chords and arrangements that she did for the verses and the electronica fuck-it-all for the chorus. The music goes along with what the daughter wants to tell the mother, how she *feels* about telling her, and vice versa. "Girls' Room" is a state of mind, not a fucking restroom. "Polyester Bride" is brilliant and subversive. As for the joys of Exile while out-of-it, let's just say it intensifies the already-intense listening experience. You zone out and tune into the underworld of Liz Phair and you can *see and feel* why it's so cool that Patty Duke plays guitar and plays it damn well. (Does that make sense?) I always had a mental block when it came to fully understanding Liz's lyrics. I knew what "Gunshy" was about, but I didn't understand why Liz wrote the lines she did until about a month ago. And then there's "Shatter," during which it felt like Liz was strumming my insides -- it was *that* intense! It's joyous, and if you're "cool" as they say in Dazed & Confused, try it. You'll have a new understanding & appreciation of Liz Phair. Since I'm a weirdo, I thought I'd ask if anyone had any favorite posts to this mailing list. (I realize not everyone has been around since Jan.). Surely there are those moments when you're reading the digest and you're astounded by a particular stroke of brilliance in a post or a few lines that make you laugh out loud. My vote for Funniest Post of the Year is Fran's Barfing in Boston story, with a close second being Meredith's post in v104 or 105 or something -- the one that was signed "Meredith, who is a bitch." The most entertaining post was Jason Long's unending cliffhanger. It actually felt like *we* were there meeting Liz, too, didn't it? Congrats, Jase, btw. You deserved to meet her. I'm really sorry to filling up so much digest space with so much Steve, but I think I've actually got some content here, and I hope this doesn't look like a fucking diary entry. I know of many things to substitute all of this. Things from the matters of your heart. She knows you love her, she knows you are there. You can't always win and this is sad but true. I've face the many bricks in the wall when I can't win my dreams. My heart is strong like a diamond that bleeds many stars, telling me that brick wall will come down. I believe in this and you should too. Don't veil your love, she knows you love her. - ---------------------------------------------- She knows people. Just keep her in your heart. I am new to support system, but I love it already. I am wondering if anyone has the Girlysound tapes or any interesting bootlegs they would like to trade or sell. Unfortuantely, I haven't been lucky enough to get any Liz bootlegs, but I have a lot of Dylan. It seems like everyone has Girlysound, where do you people find it??? Best picks of 98: 1) WCSE 2) Car Wheels on Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams 3) Mutations - Beck 4) XO - Elliott Smith 5) Adore - Smashing Pumpkins Thanks, Brian W ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 12:04:17 -0500 (EST) From: steve Subject: Re: support-system-digest V1 #121 hiya guys, Ok, i am actually pretty psyched about the alanis tour...only because garbage is opening on the detroit date and they put on one HELL of a show. i am so happy i'll be able to see them again!!! plus, shirley just adores us (detroit). hehe. And im not the hugest alanis fan...i saw her in 95...but i guess it will be interesting and will bring back some memories ('twas my first concert, aside from NKOTB and neil diamond shut up who are you to judge me). and, as someone mentioned earlier, she DOES put on a good show. Now, about the liz thing...the only thing that rubs me the wrong way is that there are tons of people on this list who didnt get to see liz...and now a whole bunch of 13-14 year alanis fans will get the chance to see ehr...not knowing how privileged they are, im sure they will just sit and chat through the "unknown' opening act...but thats what you get when you're an opening act. but as for all the bitching on the list about the insanity of the situation...it's getting really redundant.... sorry for all the typos, im doing this from home (instead of school) and its SLOW!!!! drowning in xmas cookie dough, steve ps - i'll send a top ten of the year later...because i have nothing better to do...oooh i bet you all just can't wait for that!!!!:) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 98 16:12:07 GMT From: jdirksen@tmp.com (ST LOUIS) Subject: what the hell...my lists if everyone else is doing it...what the hell: top 1998 releases 1. a tribe called quest / the love movement 2. pearl jam / yield 3. liz / wcse 4. brad / interiors 5. dave matthews band / before these crowded streets 6. soundtrack to "chicago cab" 10 cd's to take to a deserted island 1. liz / exile in guyville 2. r.e.m. / life's rich pagent 3. a tribe called quest / the low end theory 4. brad / shame 5. sarah mclachlan / fumbling towards ecstasy 6. 311 / music 7. pearl jam / vs. 8. outkast / southernplayalisticadillacmusic 9. dave matthews band / under the table + dreaming 10. depeche mode / violator 7 best movies ever made 1. heathers 2. glengary glen ross 3. ferris bueller's day off 4. good will hunting 5. the breakfast club 6. say anything 7. cannibal women in the avacado jungle of death 3 best basketball players in history 1. michael jordan 2.
