So Liz is going on a tour. Are people forgetting that we've waiting THREE LONG YEARS for this type of news to come out?? There are cities that Liz has not EVER been to, much less in the past three years. I think ANY news of Liz touring should be enough to send this list into a tizzy of excitement -- I can't think of better news than a Liz tour. Detail: she's opening for Alanis. Yes, that's unjust. Yes, it's weird. BUT I would rather have Liz touring than Liz not touring. I won't get into how I think that people only bash Alanis because she's monetarily successful and don't look at her objectively, because that will just get another discussion going on this list that doesn't belong on this list. Personally, I don't care if Liz is touring with Hanson -- I'll go. Jimi Hendrix once opened for the Monkees at Red Rocks, and history has told the tale of who was more artistically incredible. The same will happen with Alanis and Liz. Look at it this way: all the Alanis fans who show up will get exposure to Liz and probably end up liking her (I wish I could say the same about Liz phans being open-minded)... and Liz can hardly look bad for the comparison, eh? Those of us who have been with Liz since the beginning should support her to the end, after all, she's STILL Liz and STILL incredible, as was proven to us starving phans by this year's album. Buck up, grouchies, and have a happy new year -- Liz is touring! I think Liz knows her strength as an artist (while staying humble about it) and sees this as a practical move to branch out to more fans. I think a more arrogant artist would never have done this-- in a way it is a very respectable move. i'm glad liz didn't say 'no, I am too *GOOD* an artist to open for you" I'm not glad about this, i would much prefer a solo tour-- but i don't think Liz deserves any scorn for her choice. we don't know her thought process- she might have enjoyed her lillith stint, might be amusingly curious what alanis fans are like, etc. has anyone seen any articles where liz talks about this? i suppose its a bit early.. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 10:24:51 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message From: Greggrosey@aol.com Subject: No Alanis Please hello all, I'm a very infrequent writer to the list, but the news of the Alanis tour thing has totally pissed me off enough to have to vent somewhere, and iI know its not really her fault, but i'm annoyed at Liz's concert scheduling... I go to school in New Orleans (the opening night of The Alanis/ Liz tour, and in the span of 2 months I have gone from having tickets to a Liz solo show at a cool intimate place to having to pay something outrageous probably to see her only open (probably not more than a 45 minute set to unappreciative fans) at some huge place most likely... God help me if they play at the Superdome, I'll kill someone. Half the idea i was soooo looking forawrd to seeing Liz was actually meeting her, being around actually knowledgeable fans, and now that is not going to happen... It's hard to criticize her, and its not her decision anyway, but I'm sure other fans of the canceled Southern leg of the tour are also disapointed... not to mention i can't stand a single song by Alanis... My first thought.... "Liz......Fire your management!" I know that it's nice to be liked but better by far to get paid but at what expense. For starters, you've basically told you male fans to go and screw themselves. The only thing about more embarrasing than going to an Alanis show is "going early" to an Alanis show. I think of Liz and being genuine and intelligent. For those fellow Canadians out there, we know that Alanis is nothing more than a manufactured idol no more than the Backdoor Boys or N'Sync. That garbage being pumped out by the new teen queen, Brittney Spears, is exactly what Alanis polluted MuchMusic and Radio Stations in Canada with during the early nineties This is all making me sick. And it's not like I didn't give the new Alanis crap a chance. I watched her little intimate and interactive thing to see if there was anything going on up there in her monkey head. From a musical standpoint, nothing. Quite simply, she wrote a book and then got someone to play piano licks as difficult as chopsticks in the background while she read it. To Janet Rains, who we've been told peeks in on the list once in a while.....Why couldn't you tell Liz that she can expect some serious backlash from her true fans who have been with her for 5 years now? Ugh....the though of Liz playing in a half empty hockey arena with the lights on while a bunch of mainstream radio junkies funnel in makes me sick. She should be rocking a theatre venue with PJ Harvey (or even Garbage), or playing second fiddle (literally, not figureativley (sp.?)) to Tracey Bonham. Not playing second fiddle to a Former Second Coming of Debbie Gibson (that should be the actual title of her new album!) This whole thing is so embarrassing. Anyone I know who knows I'm a big Liz phan but doesn't know Liz is going to think that Liz is like Alanis (I hope that makes sense). For god sakes, if there was no EIG, there would be no Alanis. What's next, opening for Celine Dion in a quarter full MetroDome? The dual-tour thing is where Liz should be going. Like the Wallflowers and Counting Crows last year. Her and PJ Harvey could fill a 5,000 person venue in an hour and it would be a blast. To everyone who expressed something close to "serial killer rage" on hearing the news that Liz is opening for Alanis. First of all, calm down! Second, take a healthy swig of ice cold water and listen to what I have to say. First of all, I hate Alanis. With a passion so fierce that when I speak of it, I go into this eerie "calm-ninja-killer-right-before-the-attack" trance. So this post is not in defense of Alanis "Call me deep" Morrisette. It is rather, a post on how one must use the resources thrown her way. So I think most here on the list will agree that radio play music, regardless of gender, has gone down faster then a White House intern (DOH!). And we as potential listeners are forced to listen to what the mindless masses want to hear. They, in turn, are programmed by the radio station who play the same useless drivel over and over again until it gets into the heads of the idiot listeners. Now, it bites that it has turned out this way but that is the cross radio gives us to bear. Life sucks, eat a freakin' cookie. The question is, how can one fix this problem? Answer: get more intelligent, talented real artists on the air! But in order to do this, these artists MUST get exposure! And much exposure can come from touring, sometimes touring with a known artist. So Alanis bites and now Liz will be bunking with her. But if that means that so many Alanis fans get turned on to her music, in fact walk out of the show liking Liz more than Alanis, well then, who loses? Besides Alanis but no one gives a rat's pah-tooty about little-Miss-insipid right now. So Alanis fans flock to Liz, maybe garnering her some air time in the process, helping her sell more albums, and getting her sound out to more people. So she might not be as accessible as she once was. BIG DEAL. It happens, once again, Life bites... cookie. Micheal Stipe once replied in an interview, when asked about the fans who followed them when they were no one and how those fans feel now that R.E.M. is part of the Holy Trinity of alternative music, that he was grateful to the fans for all their support. He also said that those who felt they had their band was stolen away from them were missing the point of music, you can't horde your good little find forever. If the music is good it might become big, so instead of getting angry that they are not your small band anymore, be happy their message is getting out, pat YOURSELF on the back for recognizing great talent before the masses did and go out and find the NEXT new and talented artist who is in need of a solid fanbase. Music is ever-evolving, if what's on the air right now bites, it doesn't mean that it always has to be this way. We have got to stop being so concerned with keeping our talented "indie" artsits "indie." Good music must be shared and get the exposure it deserves, as I'm sure everyone learned in kindergarten. Artists and the fans can change this but in order to do so, we can't balk at sharing our knowledge. Just a thought. - -V ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 14:29:24 EST From: AMCFLND1@aol.com Subject: My albums of the year These are my top albums of the year. I think Liz is inserting a bit of absurdism here (as in the Dada movement, as in Ionesco & other absurdist authors). I've always seen this as "69 o'clock in the afternoon." It's just an impossibility, designed to amuse, but the number isn't chosen at random - she definitely chose it on purpose, to refer to the sexual act. And I don't think it has anything to do with the temperature outside! As for Liz opening for Alanis, I do think it's a shame Liz is relegated to "opening act" status. However: 1) I have to agree with MrE here - I've seen Alanis live and she does put on a good show, 2) wasn't it here on this list that everyone was bitching about Liz cancelling shows? Well, here are some new shows to see - better than NO Liz live! 3) unfortunately, in the music biz and any other for-profit biz, money talks. When the music biz turns into a not-for-profit industry and hell freezes over, you will see quality triumph over mediocrity. So, is the glass half-empty or half-full? Be thankful for having the good taste to love Liz, and for now having some opportunity to see her in Jan./Feb. Subject: I wish CDs weren't so goddamned expensive Grrr. I just want to complain. Today is my last day to xmas shop, and after realizing that I can't figure out what to buy anyone, I decided I would get these two friends of mine both Liz CDs, even though they probalby won't like her. But CDs are so fuckign expensive. I finally decided I'm just going to go to fucking Target and get the clean version of wcse for both of them, even though I originally wanted to get one friend Whip-Smart. Oh fucking well. I CAN'T EVEN AFFORD THE CHEAPO CDs! These two gifts are goin to put me under. Good thing I don't have more friends. This is the only time I'm ever going to say that. But seriously... Why the fuck do we have to show our friendship by buying shit? GRRRRRRRR. I'm sorry. I'm in a mood today. Well... see you tomorrow when I am in great pain and look like a chipmunk (getting my four wisdom teeth extracted). Last year I didn't bother to, because I found very few albums to truly get excited about (Jen Trynin's _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_, Sleater-Kinney's _Dig Me Out_, The Geraldine Fibbers' _Butch_, Elliott Smith's _Either/Or_, and Pavement's _Brighten the Corners_ being notable exceptions). If I had put together a Top 10 last year, a lot of albums would have been included that ordinarily wouldn't have had a place anywhere near such a list. This year, however, was different. While it started out pretty bleak, the latter part found a lot of good records being released, leaving me terminally broke but quite happy. My top 10: 1. Liz Phair: whitechocolatespaceegg 2. Hole: Celebrity Skin 3. Elliott Smith: XO 4. Beck: Mutations 5. Bikini Kill: The Singles 6. Wes Cunningham: 12 Ways to Win People to Your Way of Thinking 7. The Spinanes: Arches and Aisles 8. Garbage: Version 2.0 9. Lucinda Williams: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road 10. R.E.M.: Up I know that it is almost expected for me to name Liz's album as the best of the year, but had I found something better, I honestly wouldn't have been afraid to say so, just like I'm willing to admit that _Whip-Smart_ was not my favorite album from 1994 (Hole's _Live Through This_ was; _Whip_ placed second). _whitechocolatespaceegg_ truly was the greatest album of the year for me. It was good to find Liz returning in top form; this is an album I never get sick of, no matter how many times I hear it. This year, Courtney and company were second, even though I feel like docking them a few points for "Heaven Tonight," a song so sugary sweet I can feel myself getting cavities every time I hear it. There are a couple of other songs on the album that I'm not totally keen on, but overall, it's a really solid record. I really had no idea what to expect based on all of the rumors that circulated prior the album's release; I tried to brace myself for the worst, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised. And regarding Billy Corgan's involvement, I just have to say that, for the most part, the best songs are the ones he had nothing to do with. He's taking too much credit for his contributions, which in actuality, neither seem to add to or detract from the songs he worked on. Also, I know that Derek has recommended Wes Cunningham's album on the list a couple of times, and I really do have to second everything he has said. It really is a great album, with some truly incredible songwriting. And if you don't already own Bikini Kill's _The Singles_, you need it. Jawdroppingly brilliant, it's great to finally have all of these vinyl-only singles compiled onto one CD. Artists whose new albums I also enjoyed: Sheryl Crow, Sonic Youth, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey Artists whose new albums I still haven't heard, but could quite possibly change my rankings: Amy Rigby, Cadallaca, Julie Ruin, Sarge Favorite single: Hole's "Celebrity Skin" (I know I shouldn't admit this since it's so "pop" and all, but what an amazing tune), which just barely edges out Liz's "Polyester Bride." However, had "Johnny Feelgood" been released as a single this year, it would have taken top honors instead. Looking forward to in '99: new releases from Pavement, Sleater-Kinney, Elastica, and Aimee Mann Rock and roll, Jase ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 20:15:26 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Replies, part one I've kinda gotten a little behind in reading and replying to the list, so here's some small attempt to catch up... Mark Schmidt wrote: >I don't think Liz put Russian Girl on her album b/c it's almost >completely lifted from another song. The song Liz borrowed parts of "Russian Girl" from is "Hot Child in the City" by Nick Gilder, one of the biggest one-hit wonders of the late '70s. It's not exactly a knockout of a song, but I do remember it from my parent's collection of K-Tel LPs, so it was kind of interesting to hear Liz make use of parts of it in her song. >Which can get you in legal trouble if you release it and try to make >money off it. Heck, she might not have even realized when she recorded >the demo; maybe not til later. I'm sure Liz realized that she was using parts of a pre-existing song; she likely conceived of it as a "manual sample," like she did with the parts of Malcolm McLaren's "Double Dutch" she used in "Whip-Smart." This was one of Liz's favorite techniques back in the Girlysound days, so it probably wasn't an accident. One thing I'm kind of curious about is the rather obvious borrow from The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" that Liz makes in "Fantasize." The liner notes offer no credit to the source, and I wonder how Liz managed to pull that off. The Malcolm McLaren thing was credited and it's a little more obscure; the Beatles, however, everyone knows.
