"Erecting a Movie Star" - Mark Schmidt, that's so funny that you posted the lyrics to that song, even though they're probably not 100% accurate, because those are the exact lyrics that i've been singing all along! Of course, I always thought I was wrong, but I, like you, just felt that the idea was to take from the lyrics as much as you could get, and kind of paint your own picture... Like, you can just make out bits and pieces for sure, and you go from there... but it's just neat to see that someone else out there is singing the same words I've been singing. There is a Shudder to Think website, an official one, with lyrics and everything, but last I checked (when 'First Love, Last Rites' was released), there was nothing there about the soundtrack. Things may be different now, though, I don't know. It's also cool to see other people coming forward and mentioning the new, technicolor life that Liz's songs take on when you listen to them stoned. I *do* advocate smoking pot, actually. It used to be I just did it for laughs, but now the first thing I do afterwards is put on my headphones and turn on some Liz. Exile is the best for appreciating her musicianship/melodies/lyrics, but whitechocolatespaceegg is great because of the fleshed-out quality of the music, the many instruments, and the more cryptic lyrics ("Headache"). But more on that later... Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 14:51:33 -0600 (Central Standard Time) From: Lucas Miller Johnson Subject: Hey, ebo ebo ebonettes! Though a good song, I have trouble listening to it with out being reminded of "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters from which the riff was "borrowed". Moreover, the melody of the chorus seems to be lifted from some '70s pop song (ABBA?). Both of these distractions take away a lot from the listening experience of the song. There were bonfires and new swimsuits to wear, escapades into the city with fake IDs and big, bombastic Midwestern thunderstorms. And, of course, there was the annual Dead-show event. We'd go up to Alpine Valley [Wisconsin] to get away from out parents. That was where I first tried drugs. There was this bunch of girls, and we'd get into scraps and try to keep each other out of trouble. My girlfriends all had brothers that were about two years older , and the summer before senior year, everyone in their circle dated one of us. I remember that I felt pretty that summer. My high school was very 'Ferris Bueller', 'The Breakfast Club'. John Hughes went there, so at one point the national perception of the teen experience was somewhat based on our high school. We were so giddy and power-bad, but that attitude changed. One night my friend and I were driving her Rabbit home from a party, and we'd both had too much to drink. I was leaning my head out of the passenger side, resting it there becasue the metal felt cool and nice. Then I noticed the parkway trees whizzing past my hair. I was like 'Shit! We're driving up on the grass!'. That pretty much sobered us up. I guess the whole summer euphoria sort of ended."
