Along the way, I wound up with a couple slightly screwed up copies. All audio tracks, pics, and the interview MP3 are just fine. But one of the songs is on twice, and one of the songs is missing that I listed in the readme file and meant to put on the CD. Seems a shame to just throw them away. If you like Maria, or are interested in these CDs in any way, please email me. - ---Mark ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Dec 1998 15:14:09 PST From: "Gerry Lipnowski" Subject: Liz references to other songs Hi all, I noticed several posts on this subject lately.... and I'm not certain if this has already been pointed out, but when we examine Liz's songs for references to other songs, one that I'm very fond of is at the end of Johnny Feelgood, when Liz whispers 'I Like It', emulating Mick Jagger's whispered murmurings in 'I Know It's Only Rock and Roll...But I Like It'. It's subtle, yet serves as a fun reminder of the EIG-Stones connection. Could make for an interesting aspect of the video to support the single. Slipping back to lurking... Well, I think I'm about half way done with the video trades. I think I've watched that Liz bootleg video about 50 times now! And I never get sick of it. For those of you getting it, once you see it you'll know what I mean. For those of you receiving the video, just so you know, Liz doesn't come on right away. The show is a benefit, so there are a couple of speeches by people I've never heard of that lasts about 10 minutes total. But right after that Liz is intoduced. Just thought I'd let you guys know that. Don't get alarmed that she doesn't come on immediately. She does come out and plays her solo set for a little over 30 minutes. Plus the Squirt TV thing is right after that. Now I can't stop listening to "Johnny Sunshine". I don't really know why, but I love that song now too. Aren't they ever going to announce the supposed postponed Liz dates? I hope to have my new Liz web page done in a couple of weeks. I think it looks really cool so far. You guys will have to see for yourself when I'm done. Well, my eyes are about to fall out from a combination of studying for final exams and looking at this computer screen, so I'm going to go now. As usual I'm occupying somewhat of a middle ground here. I have bought several Liz bootlegs, because I am a huge fan. Though I understand the point of view that bootlegging for profit is a little too opportunistic and it would be nicer to make copies for people at cost, one has to admit that opportunism is what our economy is all about. And it does take a lot of energy to make copies of CDs for bunches of people. Now I personally am not a bootlegger, and have no aspirations thereto. If I decided that I was willing to expend the necessary effort to offer CD copies (or, for that matter, cassette) of bootlegs en masse I would probably do so at cost, but that's just it: I don't feel I have the time. I will copy stuff when I want to trade for something else, but I'm not going to set up shop as the at-cost distributor of bootleg Liz Phair to the masses, I've got other stuff to do. What these bootlegger guys are doing is saying "OK, I'm willing to take the time and effort to distribute to the masses with a minimum of hassle involved, but it's gonna cost ya," and I for one am willing to pay often because I don't want to go to the trouble of hunting down a version that I can trade for, because I don't really have all that much to offer in trade most of the time. I am basically using the money I have earned to buy a product that I want and the relative convenience in obtaining it that I want. That's essentially the same reason I go to the store instead of raising grains, vegetables, poultry and cattle myself. At the same time, I respect the opinion, which seems to be widespread around here, that bootlegging is fucked. So my personal take on that is, if you think bootlegging is fucked, don't give them your money. It will take you some extra effort, but you can find a copy of the same thing most of the time. Finally, Jason, I'm not going to call you a hypocrite by any means because I do realize that there is a pretty big difference between buying from, e.g., Craig/Wendy/Mefest and buying these original version tapes from this guy Ken knows. But the fact is, he's being just as opportunist as our friend Craig. He has in his possession a product that a significant number of people will want, and he knows he can make a significant number of dollars from it. Our reasons for paying those dollars may be nobler than the reasons of the bootleggers, but we are still supporting his opportunism. Your argument, that the tapes are going to get sold for lots of money no matter what, is quite correct, but that's basically a pragmatic counter to an idealogical objection that runs through both scenarios. I'm not trying to talk you out of your strong feelings against professional bootleggers; they're yours and you're entitled to them. But please, don't try to talk me into them with too much vehemence. Just as you're comfortable with your reasoning for buying from one opportunist (as I am), I'm comfortable with my reasoning for buying from others, even if they do prove themselves to be total assholes. Sorry to make it so long. Peter P.S. Jeff--You asked about the "ugly pilgrim" line in 7 Veils. I don't know all the ins and outs, but I think it's a pretty damn complex bit of wordplay and cultural reference. The "Entertainers bring Mayflowers" line ties pilgrim with the old April showers adage, and I would venture to guess that the entertainers mentioned are (perhaps among others) the "Mayflower Madame" call girls (hence "You can rent me by the hour".) I think this has tie-ins with the overall biblical reference of the song (the Dance of the Seven Veils was a sort of strip-tease performed by Salome for I can't remember which king back in Syria or thereabouts and the main attraction was John the Baptist's head on a platter. I think Liz may be comparing Salome with modern-day prostitutes.) So there is my incomplete analysis. Jesus, I hope this message doesn't bounce. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 23:33:04 EST From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: Stratford-on-Guy? <> Nicole! Wow!
