So what? Hey peoples... << The Support System digest v100 was *really* nothing to get all excited about. Jason has been running this list for a long, long time, and in his estimation, there have actually been around 650 digests sent out. The Support System set-up is brand new, comparatively, but it's loaded with people who've been around since the 6'1" list's start a few years ago. A 100th Support System digest isn't really great; in fact, I'd liken it to Rush Limbaugh's famous '# Of Days America Has Been Held Hostage by Clinton' thing he did before his wonderful show was cancelled. Moderated lists are much better (see: MEfest/wendy's posts, the "unsubscribe" messages, the flames, and general clutter), and soon enough Jason will begin a moderated list again, just like the 6'1" digest that "old-school" posters are familiar with. Sorry to be a wet blanket, but really... If you newcomers only knew how good it was. Not that this isn't good, but 6'1" was great. Please be advised that I'm not the only one who feels this way, either. Steve >> Just wanted to say "good call" to Steve about #100. Jason has been working so hard in maintaining a quality Liz Phair mailing list for two years now, and I have to admit (even though he never returns my e-mails... heh heh), it's the best list for any artist I've ever been. Everyone on the list (with the exception of a couple people... and we all know who they are) is extremely cool (and we all know who they are). Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. I'll shut up now. Oh, wait... I did want to say something else: NICOLE - So you complain that I don't write... and yet, you don't write me back. Interesting. But then, if you did write, you'll probably tell me about your orgasmic experience meeting Liz and then I'll feel extremely jealous and will hate you forever... so I guess it's better than you didn't write. I'm joking of course. This is true; they've come down a lot, and several models are available. Here's some info for those considering getting into homebrewed discs: The CD recorders on the marker have Serial Copy Management System. This is copy protection which the recording industry insisted on, which lets you make perfect digital copies, but not copies of THOSE copies. Stops you at one generation. Also, they record in track-at-once format, I'm pretty sure. You can't set up a whole disc and then burn it; you put songs on one at a time, and when it's full it's full, like a tape. I'm guessing they only copy at regular CD speed. Getting a CD-RW drive for your computer, though, overcomes all of these limitations. For IDE (which is what all your PCs are, most likely) drives: $180 gets you a slow drive--2X write and rewrite, only 6X read. $300 gets you 2X write and rewrite, 24X read. And $400 can get you 4X write and rewrite, with 24X read. They come with very useful software, and it isn't hard at all to set up a whole CD, click the "record" button, and come back 18 minutes later to a full disc, ready to pop in your stereo. [BTW, SCSI drives, for Macs and such, tend to run $150 to $200 more for the same thing, but are available in much faster speeds--up to 8X writing, which would make a full CD in under 10 minutes.] I highly recommend these wonderful toys to anyone. Especially if it means we'll all be trading perfect digital copies of Liz rarities and shows, instead of noisy, fragile cassettes. - ---Mark ______________________________________________________ Get Yesterday I was helping prepare a mailing for a meeting in January. One person did a double take on seeing it say January 1999. '98 was a "best of times, worst of times" for me. On the best side I got to see Liz perform twice, though the third oppurtunity was canceled. And I got to hear a new album from Liz. On the bad side, I was laid off, but that gave me an oppurtunity to take my once in a lifetime Amtrak trip. Now I am on pins and needles because I am waiting for a job offer for a job that I really want. If I get it, Ken gets a chunk of my money to help with the tape project and if in time, I'll try to get one of the pens and whatever Katie is selling. >To David (dbickin) - Don (palik)'s take on the "steady job" of Can't Get >Out of What I'm Into is much better than what I had come up with. Yeah, I agree that Don's take on the song seems on the mark, but I am still interested in what your take had been. Please e-mail if you don't want to share with the list. For me, I had this image of Liz as narrator working in some sleazy topless bar/strip joint. (As a singer/player, i.e. with clothes on.) The job paid well, but the atmosphere was dead. The strippers or barmaids were drained of hope and dignity, and seeing that Liz had talent and would end up going places, they try, though not lesbians, to attach themselves to her. The attempts are so lame, Liz likens it to the bad pickup lines of a guy. As for the line about going "back to queers"; perhaps before this gig she was working at a gay bar; less money, but a better atmosphere. But I agree I like Don's take better than this. Perhaps because in his story, it is not Liz that is suffering, but rather a friend of hers. I would very much not like to think of Liz as suffering. And then she would have looked at me all funny and with much embarassment I would have been carted off by mall police with rubber guns..... Okay, on to other things because if I have to talk about returning my tickets anymore, I'm gonna lose it. So I was looking through some pioctures on a website and I cam across this one of Liz laughing with her son, and this got me thinking. Well that, and the fact that someone mentioned that she COULD be pregnant again, we never know. I was just thinking--can't you guys imagine her having a little Liz running around. I can totally see her dressing her little girl up all cute (as she does with Nick obviously), but I bet her little gilr would be a spitting image of her---huge blue eyes and all!! Which brings me to this question, has anyone ever seen her husband? I know he is quite a few years older, but I sometimes wonder what he looks like. When she showed that picture of Nick on the Rosie show, was that James holding him, anyone know?? Just curious. Josh and Jenny---okay you TV freaks, the angel thing made me laugh! Josh and I could totally write a Liz related script. Members of the list could all be bouncers at her show and every week someone tries to blow her up or something---and guess who has to save the day!!! Think of all the stuff we went through, the bootleg people, Alanis bashing and what else where we had disagreements and yet, we made it past 100. Also, the fact of bootleg people selling Liz's cds makes Jason mad. Just think of the time where he could have just gotten rid of the whole list if he wanted to. I know what it's like to be a moderator of a list cuz I manage my own list and I had a time where I got mad about what was going on to the point where I wanted to to completely get rid of it. So, reaching past #100 was a good thing to me. I was a part of this list shortly before it was changed to Support-System, so I know this list isn't brand new. <> There's a big difference, you're offering cds of what we can get on tapes, while Ken is offering something not a single soul on this list has. <> Not that I know of. This is the only place I know of where there seems be such a strong connection between Liz phans. There's only one person I've met where she's the biggest Jewel fan and it seems like it's just the two of us raving about her. But other than that, this is the only group I know of. *hoooked on support systim wurks fer me!* <<"Long's Angels" (with me, Spaceegg Katie, and Jennifer Sayler as the Angels - - but I get to be Sabrina).>> Huh? *scratches head* Well, me never watched Charlie's Angels. I like your ideas, they got me laughing! I wanna be a part of "The Phair Files," better yet....Phair Philes. "Bootleg, He Wrote," gee...who could that be for? <> Nashville: "Then naked, half-awake, about to shave and go to work" Soap Star Joe: "check out the aftershave" Just thought it was interesting that I wanted these songs so closed to one another and that they have shaving in both of them. But I do have a tape of her performing these back to back and I just had to laugh. For everyone who was responding to my definition of WCSE. I was bored out of my mind and that came up in my head and decided to share it with everyone. Yes, I have heard where it came to Liz in a dream and how it's related to Nick. My creative mind is always rambling. Could we please stop arguing about the whole ordeal of Liz's cancellations? It's kinda getting...I dunno. Just reading the reviews of the Boston show on Monday/Tuesday are enough for me and I'm getting on the positive side that she'll end up here someday. Anywhere in Florida, and I'll hold my mother hostage and force her to drive me there! Just kidding! She said she'd drive me to a Liz show as long it's in Florida. Sigh.... BTW, Boston people: Please send me your reviews so I can add them to my page!!!!!!!!! Why do I hate Florida? Um...it seems like I'm the only Liz phantic in town and everyone else is into Marilyn Manson and what not. Arghit! This town is so boring and I hate how I can't just call someone on the phone and talk about Liz's music. Thank goodness I've found a great group of fans here on support system. Oh, for those who wanted info of what the pen will look like. It's going to be white with the Liz logo from the bumpersticker. Please email me if interested or if you've sent a check. Liz video: so far, I like Jealousy. I haven't seen Supernova yet. Is there anybody on this list who could make me a copy of all of Liz's music videos? I'll provide a blank video tape and return postage. Please! Please! Please! *I will get down on my knees and I will beg* Any other interviews would be great! Thanks! Oh yay....I got my cd from bootleg boy. It's of Minneapolis, MN 10/17/98. Go me........ I'm not sure if we as Phair phans sould be insulted by this or not. At least they describe Liz as sultry. - --------- SINGERS COMMENTARY Bad can be good, unless it's really bad By Thor Christensen The Dallas Morning News (KRT) Lucinda Williams is lauded by critics, lionized by musicians and worshiped by a small but loyal audience. But radio has never warmed up to Williams for one simple reason: She sings as if she's got a massive head cold. That's not to say Williams is a lousy singer. Her craggy, twangy voice has more warmth and soul than Mariah Carey and Celine Dion combined. But from a technical standpoint, her singing is flatter than the plains of Iowa _ hence radio's reluctance to play her alongside golden-voiced divas such as Wynonna or Whitney Houston. But why is it that some singers with rusty, mangled pipes are shunned while others are deified? Mick Jagger once told an interviewer, "I can't hardly sing, you know what I mean? I'm no Tom Jones, and I couldn't give a (expletive)." Yet lame larynx and all, he's got one of the most famous voices in rock. It's the same story with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed and countless other legendary singers who sound like candidates for a vocal-cord transplant. So what, exactly, is the difference between a good singer with a bad voice (like Williams), a passable singer with a passable voice (say, Jagger) and the rest of us no-talents who create heavy-duty noise pollution in the shower each morning? It's a fine line, indeed, and a subjective one at that _ right this minute, someone somewhere is listening to Axl Rose and actually enjoying it. Here's one music fan's assessment of the current crop of bad singers, ranked in descending order of annoyance from flat-out bad to actually pretty-good-bad: 1. Sean "Puffy" Combs _ A two-time offender: A lame rapper and a lame singer. Good thing he makes his guest stars do most of the vocals on his records. 2. Sean Lennon _ Vocal talent doesn't always run in the family. Sean's wispy voice makes half brother Julian seem like Ray Charles. 3. Kirk Franklin _ At least he's smart enough to keep his singing to a bare minimum and focus on rapping and preaching. 4. The Beastie Boys _ Not quite as smart. Their "Hello Nasty" CD is plagued by their beastly attempts to evolve from rappers to singers. 5. Billy Corgan _ No wonder the Smashing Pumpkins' drummer developed a drug habit _ you'd medicate yourself, too, if you had to listen to this nasal whine every night. 6. Dexter Holland _ The Offspring's atonal lead screamer couldn't croon his way out of a wet paper bag. But his hilarious speed-metal hatchet job on Morris Albert's "Feelings" almost makes up for it. 7. Greg Dulli _ An R&B legend in his own mind, the leader of the Afghan Whigs proves you don't even have to have soul to be a decent soul singer. 8. Liz Phair _ The female Barry White. Half-baked singing has never sounded so sultry. 9. John McCrea _ Cake's frontman can neither sing nor rap, but his droning delivery works perfectly in "The Distance" and "Never There." Is there a Grammy category for "best intonation?" 10. Courtney Love _ The ultimate female grunt-and-screecher, la Love comes across like Joan Jett on steroids. The first one on this list would obviously be Greased Lightening. Also, in Fantasize, she says "You've got to hide your love away" from the Beatles song of the same name. That line even sounds like the Beatles song. Does anyone have any to add to this list, it occurs to me that there are a few more, but I am lazy and would rather that you all tell them to me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jenny "I wanna be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious" - Liz Phair http://www.liz-phair.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Dec 1998 22:07:10 -0800 From: jtconnolly Subject: Puking in Boston Hi all: Like many of you, being a dedicated, huge Liz Phair fan takes up a good portion of my time and energy, very much happily so. However, the BCN show in Boston Tuesday night was NOT that much fun. Sure, Liz sounded GREAT again (like at Lillith-Darren Lake and Roseland), looked FANTABULOUS as always, and played to the crowd like a senior more than a freshmen (line taken from her 120 minutes appearance...cool analogy, though, ha? leads you to believe she's going to tour until she considers herself a "senior" like the rest of those Lillith chumpettes......but I digress). Everything was PHENOMENAL except that I was sitting on the first step (12 feet from Liz, directly stage left, in front of the crowd barrier--had a perfect view) with my heavy winter coat on, shivering like it was Siberia, so sore I could (honestly) barely stand because I was sick out of my mind and had thrown up all over Avalon for the previous 45 minutes. A 24 hour virus has been ravaging my family and when did I get it??? what would be perfect timing?? as I entered the Avalon to see Liz Phair!! some fucking timing, ha? I tried to sleep during BBVD at the back of the place on one of their couches, but that didn't work too well as I felt REALLY BAD. I could sense a lot of people around me giving me shit and overhear people talk shit because I wasn't "into" that set...whatever, people: you had no idea what I was going through, then. (whaaaa) when I tried to rally for Liz, I stumbled a few feet, stumbled a few more, and whamo! PROJECTILE city, baby! People were looking at me like I was tanked (friends that know me could/would/should assume I'd been puking from the drink), but this was not the case at all. (I'll try to wrap up this gloriously pleasant post soon) Moral of the story: Liz is GREAT, Liz is FANTASTIC in concert, I'd do ANYTHING to see Liz live again (support system, mesmerizing, flower, etc are performed so sultrily--is that a word?-- these days!! whew!).... BUT IT AIN'T NO FUN BEIN' 3 HRS FROM HOME IN A FOREIGN ENVIRONMENT SURROUNDED BY TONS O' STRANGERS WHEN YOU'RE AS SICK AS A DYIN' DOG...only for Liz, I guess!! Sorry for the gross concert report, later FRAN ps. How cool was the Monkees song at the end?!?! I can't believe she played Elvis' "Allison" the night before!!!! Anyone have a copy of this?? see propostion below, if so.... cynthia nagle: wonderful titles for our TV pilot idea, I loved them. We've nabbed a writer or two and some actors, we just need to pull it all together. Tokeepme@aol.com: If you have a copy of this WBCN Dec. 1 show @ Avalon (i thought in your post you said you recorded it digitally), I'll do anything for a copy: Money, trades, brute labor, sex slave, wash car, etc. PLEASE. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Dec 1998 21:49:22 -0600 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: heeheee hi guys, sorry i had to run out of #wcse so quick lbut li had to et to partying, u ma now goint to [play a\strip poker ~ see yas ;ater/ I wish liz was coming on monday, how sad, oh well, I have somwthin to look foward to!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jenny "I wanna be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious" - Liz Phair http://www.liz-phair.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #102 ************************************
