[AngelLieb@aol.com] Re: support-system-digest V1 #98 [Lucas Miller Johnson Subject: speculation and jealousy video the jealousy video is a bit strange, it's like a bar/club type setting and there is a lot of body language to read and there's another outside part that's mostly focused around this guy being hunted down with liz coordinating the movements of her agents (glamorous women in heels and dark glasses). There are also silhouettes of people making karate type kicks and punches (see cover of juvenilia). The part that I notice most is the bar and club scene where "the Brunette" comes in between Liz and a guy, maybe the one being hunted down. The video ends with the prey falling dead to the ground. I guess it's best you watch it for yourself. I think it's in avi form at Lizphair.com. My speculations on Liz's canceled tour dates: 1) she wants to keep her son out of the touring atmosphere and wants to spend time with him. 2) She's worn out from touring all summer. 3) maybe she's pregnant again? You never know. 4) she has heard about ken's fundraising and refuses to tour until he has collected enough money. okay, the third is a little silly, but I like to think of liz reproducing more and populating the world with little versions of herself. SEND KEN MONEY I learned this in psych... it's social loafing- everyone relies on the others in the group to do the work and nothing gets done. The 100th seems to be a good time to announce a website which I'm currently pulling together. The short version is that it's a Liz live website. The main purpose is as a tape(and CD) trading site, but I hope for it to also work as a setlist archive as well. I plan on having the site searchable by shows where anybody interested in a specific show can pull up that show and see the traders available as well as the setlist for that show. I'll also have lists of each trader's collection. To be honest, I'm still between two and four weeks away from having the site ready for everybody to check out. I would like everybody to start emailing me their lists, though. I'm limiting the list to full shows, not 3 or 4 song sets, complete shows. These are much easier to work out trades for. If there's enormous demand to have the itty bitties included, I could probably do that to. For submissions to the list, give me the date, venue, setlist for any shows I don't have.(My list is at: http://www.angelfire.com/fl/layeroffilm/tapelist.html I also have the following shows on the way, so I won't need setlists for these, either. - -03/??/94 San Francisco - -04/11/95 Los Angeles - -04/22/95 Minneapolis - -09/09/98 Austin - -09/24/98 Los Angeles Then include your best guess(be honest) of the quality of the tape or CD. If the email address you send from is not the one you want to be emailed at, let me know that as well. Any questions, email me. I'll try to respond quickly, but in the next few weeks, I'm directing my first movie, moving to a new house which has to be painted before we move in, finishing up school, working a full-time job, pulling together this website and figuring out a foolproof plan to bring Liz to Florida. I'm confident I can do all of these except for the last one. That might take a little work. Anyway, send your lists and I'll keep everybody updated on the progress. Just kidding. Although they would have had a lot more fans if they could have rocked like that. Then again they would have probably had less. Anyway last nights show was great! Although the audience didn't seem to get in to it, Love and Rockets were really good. Sort of like crossing techno with Sonis Youth. Big Voodoo Daddy(did I screw that up) swung and got the audience warmed up for Liz. I'm not much of a reviewer other than to say she was awesome as usual. Opened with WCSE and closed with a cover of the Monkees?!(I'm a Believer) They handed out set lists to some after the show(was that you Ruthie or KB) so some can put the complete list. Didn't play Stratford- on -Guy though. I heard some girl saying play Jealousy, because you promised you would learn it. (Ruthie?) I went to the front of the stage during BVD and for the rest of show. Had no idea who the listers were. Didn't feel like asking everyone if they were Katie, Ruthie or Fran. Where was everyone in relation to security guy at front of stage. I was about 6 or 7 ft directly in front of him. KB, didn't read you last 2 posts until after the concert. Had your handbill. Actually 2. E-mail me where you want me to send it. I didn't forget you. Everyone looked so young. Some people drinking looked about 16. And what was the deal with the smoke machine? Ken just sent your $ out, although $68 so far. Yikes. I don't think the girl who told us to screw ourselves helped, eh. Spaceegg Katie. I read about the pens but didn't see the 1st post of this. What it going to look like? Picture or just say Liz Phair. Jason I saw your posts in response to other people, but how do you know we will ever get the the real story? In regards to myself I think the cancellations were great because now I'll probably see her again in early 99. But for most everyone else it sucked. Either her or her booking agency(or both) bears responsibility for this. If its her agency(and this continually happens) then they should be fired. A bunch of people(ticket broker, fans etc.) put out effort or $ on her behalf. But I must apologize to Liz on one note. The WBCN gig was to raise money for charity. I don't think the previous nights was though. Let us know if you receive some explanation on this Jase. Thanks. One last note. A whole lotta of people to seem to want non-released material from Liz. (ie GS, PM, CARNIVORE on CD) I include myself in that list. I have all the regular issue(4) but nothing else. Is there a way for all us in need to properly go about this Jason. Or should we bug someone until they break down.(lol) A night of bliss, Bill in CT P.S. To whoever said Liz said she has never done covers(I missed Allison) I hope she meant live. They looked like they were having fun, too, which is always nice. They were like an extra added bonus. Liz- She was great. She played Big Tall Man and "I'm a believer" (Monkees cover) along with a bunch of tour standards. She also sang a little bit of the Monkees theme. Keep it real liz, keep with the music! I know what you mean about keeping Liz on a small scale..but at the same time..i really don't think her videos suck. I mean, her songs are all simple lyric wise, but in an amazingly genius way - so much so that all us kids are like "Why the hell didn't *I* think of those lyrics" but the genius part is, we don't. Liz does. Her videos are cool, i think.Simple, cut and dry - they are almost the only way to actually show the song. A bit of humour, sometimes they add a new twist to it...the video for JEALOUSY cracks me up - the women cat fighting at the bar, the bitchy "jealous" look on Liz at the bar, LIz and her pals on walkee talkees...I LOVE IT! Cute, charming, low budget-esque, and the main focus of each one is cute little Liz, the master :) Personally, I adore her videos. They're fun to watch. Kinda like a Bjork video..i mean, you can watch Bjork jump around on the back of a truck for an entire song (Big Time Sensuality)or rub eggs to her forehead for a whole song (Venus as A Boy)and have a blast watching it....I wouldn't say they suck, though. I could watch an entire movie's length worth of Liz jumping around with that guitar of hers, and still end up screaming "ENCORE!ENCORE!" fully recovered and walking after my 6 week Liz Phair tragedy, Dan. **************************************************** "Crash and burn, all the stars explode tonight." -Hole. **************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 11:47:15 -0500 (EST) From: Syrup@concentric.net Subject: liz autograph (Re: Juvenilia) Bill - feel free to compare. After talking with some local booking/promoting people, it seems that considering that this is the third show she has scheduled for Lawrence and then cancelled, nobody is going to be willing to ever book her to play in Lawrence again. They've been burned 3 times (printing tickets, selling tickets, making radio ads, getting the ads aired, returning tickets, paying back the money, apologizing, etc.) and they don't want to get burned a 4th time. I know Liz's background isn't as well-known as Madonna's, but it gets a little ridiculous after a while. It makes me want to do an interview with her that steers clear of all those cliches. One of the latest on there is quite good, though. Very revealing. I wonder if Liz (or any of those interviewers out there) comprehends the emotional attachment her fans have for her. It's never mentioned! For all you Tori, Ani, Sarah, Jewel, Natalie, Alanis, Paula, etc - heads out there: do the emotional attachments run as deep with them as ours run with Liz? I kind of witnessed a slice of the Ani cult at a Bob Dylan show, but I can't imagine any of the other artists having that kind of pull on one's life. I'm kind of revealing myself here, but none of my other favorite artists pierce me as much as she does -- and that's saying something. Do any of you out there who have met her feel she has an inkling what her songs do to people? As for the question for the truly bored, I thought of this one in a long car drive: if you were to divide "WCSE" into quadrants of four songs each (WCSE thru Feelgood, Polyester thru Alvarez, etc), what would your favorite quadrant be? Would it be white, chocolate, space or egg? What about EXILE? If you divy them up 5-4-5-4, would you choose perhaps one of the more obvious ("guy," with Fuck, Girls, Divorce, Shatter, Flower), or do you have other favorites? As for "Whip-Smart," we might just want to divide that into two. Are you truly bored? And another thing, if anyone is thinking of buying this person's bootlegs, don't bother. The Chicago show can't be complete if it's only one disc -- that show ran over the 74 minutes that can fit on a single CD-R, and a complete copy of it will be available through the upcoming tree on the list. I have it, and wouldn't live without it. Wow, how many of us out here actually heard the Stones' Emotional Rescue WAY BEFORE Liz's version? I feel so friggin' old... Real adult life encompasses so much more than navel-gazing and the concerns inside one's own head. (Though there's always room for a little Ride with Johnny Feelgood... oh yeah, this Baby Got Going! Guess What Makes Me Happy? A Big Tall Man who fucks like a volcano, like the Russian Army rolling through my head - he's got me winning, spinning, and it feels good, like relieving a headache!) Katie Brown - WOW, you GO, girl! Good for you, for getting backstage, conversing with Liz for so long, and posting your experience for all of us so quickly! Sounds simply awesome. Jillian - I'm sure someone ahead of me has already answered this one, but yes, Jealousy does have a video. This is only one person's opinion, but it's my least favorite of all her videos. It's discombobulated. But I know there are others here who pointedly disagree. Ah well. Thanks for listening! Katie already posted about us meeting and all, it was so weird! I was there with a guy from mama kin but he didnt want to stand at the stage. I loved that it wasnt crowded at all, after tracy bonham, i was able to go right up and stand leaning against the stage. I totally thought I was surrounded by all corporate WFNX people who didnt even like or know liz, until Katie and i started talking and i knew others were as obsessed as me! It was so bizarre that she knew it was me, I was telling her that i had to drive back to nyc after the show in order to make it to school on tues. she was like Lani? I couldnt believe it! anyway, the show was so amazing, i was mesmerized by her, she is so hot! you should have seen her singing flower, she was down on her knees feeling herself all over, it was amazing! thank god my friend was able to get us all upstairs, although the security wasnt that tight, anyone really could have gotten up there. I think I sounded like a complete idiot talking to her, I had so much to say, but I basically couldnt remember a bit- I stood there in absolute shock! I did mention to her that we all have these obscure songs of hers and she was psyched that girlysounds is so popular - I told her how much i love go speed racer and she said she couldnt even remember the words to most of those songs. i told her i drove all the way from ny to see her and have to go back that night in order to get to school in the morning and she's like- ya gotta do it for the kids! she said her son has her up at 6 am every morning. i am kicking myself for not bringing any of her cd's to get signed. anyway, after pictures and stuff, I had to book out of there- it was 12:30 and i was on my way. I made it to brooklyn in 3 hours! i was on such a high, I couldnt calm down. so now I am still feeling the effects of that drive and lack of sleep, but it was all worth it. now I am dying to hear how last nights show went. If i remember correctly the falling out she had with brad wood was because tour dates that were set up to support whipsmart were cancelled by liz after brad wood had already been set aside time away from the studio to be in her touring band. if she would blow off brad wood like that, (who, by the way, is a large part of the whole liz phair equation) then blowing off a few dates to support space egg isn't inconceivable. as for the dates being postponed, the raleigh nc show (i had tickets for) has been cancelled, as in return your tickets to the point of purchase for a full refund cancelled. doesn't really sound like a postponement to me. still luv liz butt needed to vent a little just my opinion for what it is worth robert joyner ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 21:31:53 EST From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: uh.....???? more for 100! And how? mayowel@access.digex.net (sorry, I didn't write down your name. Is it D?) brought up the Liz cover tape. For those of you that don't know, a while back, before I was on the list, some people started passing around a tape and recording Liz covers on it. Master Jase told me about this on the #wcse thingie a while ago, after I suggested starting just such a thing, and I was hyped about adding to it, and hearing what was already on it, but alas, I let my priorities get out of whack, and if he hadn't mentioned it again, I probably would've forgotten all about it. I know there are tons of musical fruits on this list, and I would delight in hearing your interpretations of our favorite songs! Whoever has the tape now, could you post what songs are already on it? And could you pass it on to me, please? And, assuming I get it, I will pass it on to all who ask for it. And then when it fills up, neato! Derek, I think it's really funny and insightful that straight guys might be initially turned off of Liz's music because they're just too turned on to her, and know they'll never be able to sleep with her. :) In hindsight, that may be kindof like what I felt. I ordered Whip Smart as one of my 12 free CDs from BMG, because I realized that I didn't have many women in my CD wallets, and the blurb in the BMG catalogue sounded promising. When it finally came in the mail though, and I popped it in, and the monotone of Chopsticks came out, I was like, what the fuck is this? I'd never heard anything like it before. And the rest of the album was equally alien. I don't even think I really listened to the rest of the album, or if I did, I just had it on while I was doing something else and not really paying attention to it at all. Her voice was so ... raw, and like, I don't give a fuck if you like this or not, I'm not trying to sound pretty, this is me, deal with it. (BTW, this initial impression I had of her is so different from how I think of her now. More one-dimensional, I guess. But if I had seen her in concert right after that first listen, I would have been really surprised that that was the same woman. Of course, I've changed a bit since then too.) SO I took WhipSmart out of the CD player, and hid it away in my Wallet and regretted having ordered it. A year later, at a new school in a new town, I was driving into McKinney at night, wanting something to listen to that wouldn't make me choke, and I found Liz back there, practically unheard, and definitely different, and she blew me away. And that's the story of how I met and fell in love with Liz Phair! :) That's enough out of me for tonight. I've gotta write a video script, and think of a family story to tell my class tomorrow!
