She can't exactly plan her life around the possibility that shows may be booked for her that she won't find out about until after it's too late. If she already has made other plans for those times, she obviously can't do both and will have to back out of one. As for the comments about Matador, I think you misunderstand what I was saying, or you did not read the post that I was responding to. Vanessa had written, and I quote, "I love Liz and all, don't get me wrong, but if you sign a contract with a record label YOU WILL TOUR. It's scripture almost, you sign to the beast you have to feed it as well." What I said about Liz having told Matador that she wasn't going to tour when they first signed her (my source for this, by the way, are comments Liz made during an on-air interview with WFNX in late 1994) was just a response to Vanessa's comment to say that, on the contrary, just because you sign with a label doesn't mean you have to tour behind your releases. Matador signed Liz knowing her position on touring. That's all. My comment had nothing to do with the 1998 tour dates, and if you would have read my post more carefully, you would have realized this. Just because these comments were all in one post doesn't mean they are all interconnected; I tend to make a lot of asides when I write. I was obviously not referring to this year's dates with those statements, it was something offered in and of itself to respond to that one comment made by Vanessa. And no, Matador has nothing to do with booking Liz's shows, although I do believe that they assist in this for other, smaller bands on the label. Liz, however, is in a different position, as she is one of their bigger artists and has her own manager and booking agent. At one time, however, when Liz first signed to the label, they might have helped her in organizing a tour if she so chose. Also, I was trying to defend Matador since they seemed to be taking a bit of flack on the list for something that they are quite obviously not responsible for. Some people were obviously unaware of how Liz's shows are booked and I just wanted to clear that up. I wasn't using what Liz said to Matador in the mid-nineties as an argument about the 1998 tour dates; you obviously just weren't following what I was saying. Liz does have people to book shows for her now, which obviously shows that her thoughts on touring have changed, but I think the current problem could lie with a lack of communication between Liz and her people. I was trying to point that out in my previous post, but obviously I failed. >i'm not saying its definitely her fault because maybe she had family >problems or her own personal problems, but still, fans have a right to be >a little upset. I understand that the fans have a right to be upset, but I just hate to see any blame assigned to anyone until we have all the facts. Even now, we still don't know exactly why these shows were postponed. All that we have heard has been very vague. Also, before Liz got knocked too much, I wanted people to acknowledge that she has done more for her fans this year than probably any other in terms of shows that have already taken place. She's obviously trying and I just wanted that to be recognized. Also, the dates have only been postponed (at least, last I heard). They will be rescheduled for another time (early 1999 is the current word). If Liz really didn't care, she would have cancelled them flat out. Honestly though, I guess it's all too easy for me to say what I have, seeing as I have already had the opportunity to see Liz twice this year: first at the Buffalo Lilith Fair date, then in Toronto on her own tour. I've also been extremely lucky because I was able to meet Liz in Toronto. And let me just say, one of the things I picked up on while talking to her is that she quite obviously cares about us fans. Maybe the fact that I know this is why I want everyone to cut her some slack until we know for sure what has happened. >i"m just saying i feel your pain to the people affected by >the cancellations which doesn't include me, and there's no need for the >whole "you really have no right to complain, saint liz can do no wrong" >sherade. I never said that Liz can do no wrong, but I think that some people are a little too quick to assign blame when none of us know all of the details of what's going on and why this has happened. Until there is proof that Liz indeed blew these dates off, I don't think she should have to accept any blame for it. I was simply offering some possible explanations for what might have happened and where certain problems may lie (for example, her management booking shows that she is unaware of, or other similar miscommunications). I guess it's all too easy to speculate, though. What we really need are the facts. Anyway, I had a few more things I wanted to say on the subject, in response to other posts, but I think I'll leave it at this for now. Sorry if this comes off more harshly than I intend; I just hate when things I've said have been misconstrued. Well, I may be alone in this, but I like her videos. And I hate most of the videos of these "unknown bands" that they play on 120 Minutes. I despise what I call special effects videos. They have nothing to do with the song, or the music, or the band, yet they just showcase special effects. I have nothing against special effects in videos--one of my favorite videos is "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies, in which all the band members heads are warped. But most of the videos put out today lack any sort of connection to the music. I find Liz's videos different (and Pavement's and Superchunk's and a few others). Here videos reflect something about the song. And they're like art films, to a small degree. This is just my opinion, but remember, I am a film major (snicker, snicker). Robyn adn I were really close and talking to a girl who was wasted and talking about how she is the biggest liz phair fan in the whole world. (she hadn't heard of wcse, not that it's a competition but still i was like you're annoying) then I started talking to someone (while studying the set list that had been taped down) who said she had to drive back to New York and I was like "are you LANI?" and i was psyched to meet another list person. we were happy. then, knee-length black leather boots, a sky-blue short skirt and a v-neck long sleeved black ribbed sweater SHE appeared. the twangy begining of wcse announced her: Whitechocaloatespaceeg Never Said Johnny Feelgood Dance of the Seven Veils Big Tall Man 6' 1" Flower Polyester Bride Allison (cover! - Elvis Costello) Mesmerizing Fuck and Run Divorce Song I'm a Believer (cover! -the Monkees) (check Nicole's site for exact setlist, this one might be screwed) During Mesmerizing she was kneeling down and holding our hands and I was like "I gave you a baseball!" and she was like "baseball?" and I said last time i gave you that baseball and she was nodding like oh, yeah. so lani had an all access pass and robyn and I didn't but they let us all into the backstage party anyway. we saw liz and she had changed into a grey sleeveless dress and was going to be taken to a special bathroom. by the time she came back, janet had introduced me to Nicole, mommy of I Spy a May Queen and fellow lister! Nicole, Lani, my friend Robyn and I waited for liz to come back as many others were. So i will try to re-cap the exact dialogue because it was outragous...i'm still remembering bits and pieces today. (actually she has since played with former Material Issue drummer Matt but I just thought of that now sorry to get off track) Introductions, Nicole tells her about the website I Spy a May Queen and Liz says: I love that song! (singing) You were miles above me.... then turned to me and says: that song is about a Wicker Park guy....(makes a yucky face) He was like (makes a motion like he's really important) and he was so huge. May Queen, my son loves that song. I think we started taking pictures and she signed my EIG cd. There's one picture of all three listers and Liz. KB: I have NEVER even heard of you doing cover tunes! While he has received a number of donations, he still needs to raise quite a bit more money yet. His original plea was for everyone on the list who was able to to send $2 each. Many people have been more generous than that, but the fact remains that there have not been near enough contributions. Ken wants to obtain these tapes so that we can distribute them via a tree on the list; that way everyone who is interested will be able to get copies of them. The person offering these tapes is asking for a lot of money though (over $1250). Ken is offering to put up a lot of this money himself, but he still needs help if this is to happen as he can't do it alone, and the reason why he is doing this is so that everyone can benefit from it. We don't want these tapes to fall into the hands of bootleggers who will then charge outrageous amounts of money for this material, limiting the number of people who would be able to hear it. If Ken's able to get these tapes, everyone can hear Liz's works-in-progress for the mere cost of blanks and postage. We also don't want these tapes to fall into the hands of someone who will just sit on them forever, in which case no one will hear them at all. These studio tapes come from a roommate of two of the musicians who play on the new album, and are from Trax recording studios. There is a tape of Liz and Scott Litt alone in the studio (about fifty minutes long), along with six tapes of other material, some of which includes the following: what makes you happy demo what makes you happy rough mix blood keeper big tall man bars of the bed demo rough mix of entire record on one tape This is a really incredible opportunity for us fans, so please don't let it pass us by. If you're able to help contribute, I know that Ken would really appreciate it, as would I, seeing as how I'd like for myself and everyone on this list to be able to hear all of this material. If you have any questions, you can email Ken at , and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to answer them for you.
