Buddy's guitar is much heavier, more pronounced than Liz's on Guyville, so this is the way to go, just so you know. I think he plays with a capo, though, or his guitar is tuned up a notch or something, I don't know, but I remember watching him play the song, so I know I'm on the right track. There are a couple chords that are hard to make out, but I actually have 75% of the song figured out. It's not really hard if you're patient. Anyone who wants to see what I have figured out so far and/or would like to help me figure out the rest of it, email me please. (I have to add that this is like My Favorite Liz Song of the Month -- her rendition of it on this tour has got to be at once the sexiest and most hysterically funny thing she's ever done in concert.) Pretty soon, we're gonna have enough new tabs to start a tab page for the website, which Jason suggested before, to no avail. A couple of people asked about "Polyester Bride" -- email me and I'll tell you how it goes. It's simple. Last, the Fuck and Run CD boot (from 3/94) is amazing. This has got to be the best Liz boot I've ever heard. It clearly shows that Liz really was an excellent performer back then, when she actually played guitar on all the songs. The guy who saw her on this tour and said she sucked (but that PJ Harvey kicked ass) should have seen her in 1994 (believe me, I wish I had). She was in complete control of her guitar and voice, and the band (Brad, Casey, Leroy) sounded wayyy better than Liz thought they did. "Explain it to Me" fuckin' rocks on this boot, with Casey adding great droney guitar effects. It's almost Washing Machine-era Sonic Youth-ish at times. Anyway... Why don't you people who have this boot rave about it more often? Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 10:18:14 -0500 From: Dan Subject: Dream Set list/New single I'm kinda thinking the new single will be "What Makes You Happy", it just seems that since it is realized how much potential this new album has, they are going to kick the new year off with a bang...I still don't know why "POlyester Bride" wasn't a smash hit...it gets better each time you listen to it... Hmm...I agree with Chuck, the most interesting single would be "Uncle Alvarez", but I don't know if it would be smart to release it, as it may end up exactly how Polyester Bride did..with little to no airplay. What a damn shame..."What Makes You Happy" is perfect, loud, catchy, kinda dancey, and still has the trademark "LIZ" style story-telling to it...gonna be HUGE, i just know it. My dream set list: god..that's soo tuff..Maybe a really powerful opener of 1. CHOPSTICKS - I could just picture it all quiet, curtains open, crowd screams Liz behind the piano and everyone is just silent, transfixed by her...that would be beautiful... 2. DON't HAVE TIME - A totally rocking song to follow the quiet, hypnotic opener. 3. POLYESTER BRIDE 4. PERFECT WORLD 5. SOAP STAR JOE 6. IF I EVER PAY YOU BACK 7. Sometimes A Dream (Is WHat Makes You A SLave) 8. SHATTER - I would kill to see this one done live, although it would most likely lose something - but hell - it's a dream. 9. FUCK AND RUN - classic Liz 10. MAY QUeen 11. STRANGE LOOP. encore: "OH DANNY BOY" - just for me. :) and it would be on my birthday too, so she'd sing happy birthday, then she'd invite me back stage and decide she wants to keep me around as a roadie for the entire tour, we'd become best friends and live happily ever after. amen to that. I'm convinced the Johnny Feelgood should be the next single. It's got that whole verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, chorus, chorus thing that the execs were telling here to write after they shelved the first attempt at this album. It's an edgy song and the lyrics would likely appeal to the "lower common denominators" (that being the mainstream radio lovers who curse us to hear crap like Celine Dion playing everywhere). The whole rough love thing was accepted when our bare-bottomed friend started going down on guys in a theatre. And no one seemed to mind that they blanked out the word fuck in that song (or Supernova). It's pretty original (unless you want to draw a comparison to Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue?) and I can just picture a bunch of teeny boppers talking about their own "Johnny Feelgood"!!!!! I personally think that PB was a lame call for the first single. I'm not a big fan of the song in general (I can assume what she means by Polyester Bride but the public just aint that bright when compared to the people on this list. They're still too busy trying to decide weather or not they "should get down on the first night".) "What makes you happy" would be an ideal follow up to Johnny Feelgood. And the masses would get a kick out of that "all those other bastards were only practice" line. But not unless they loved Johnny Feelgood first. Also, the side of the case is >off-white on one side and yellow on the yellow. Up until a little over a year ago, the _Exile_ CDs all had this face: the blue background and Ken and Barbie dolls with the fire-brushed effect (if you look really closely, you can make this out; the dolls seem to have, um, found a creative way of celebrating the release of Liz's first album). I've easily bought two dozen copies of _Exile_ since its release; my original copy, a replacement when that one got scratched, and the rest all gifts to various friends or partners. The first time I came across one of the copies with the new design (the dancers from the back of the CD booklet) was about a year ago October, if I remember correctly. This has been mentioned on the list a couple of times in the past, but there's never been any explanation for the change. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Matador's CDs are now manufactured by EMI (although not all titles are distributed by said company) instead of WEA. Another possibility is that they made the change at the time the CD was introduced to Matador's mid-price series last year. Personally, I have to say that I like the original CD face more. It seems to fit much better with the rest of the artwork, and I love how the background matches the blue on the back of the CD booklet and underneath the CD tray as well. To all those I owe emails to, sorry it's taking me so long to respond. I've had the flu for the last few days, so I haven't been spending much time at the computer. I'm starting to feel better, so I'll try to get caught up over the next couple of days. Also, hopefully I'll get part three of my Toronto saga posted soon as well... (Tanya Donnelly's solo album is VERY good, despite a couple of rough initial listenings that made it hard to warm up to...for me.) sorry for the non-Liz content. please email me privately if you'd like to trade or hook me up. thanks, FRAN ps. recently someone wrote about purchasing the WCSE import and how it is sort of silly to spend so much money just for one track. I just bit the bullet and bought it, too, and I think the version of "hurrican cindy" on the "pharities" tape is WAY better (actually the best...better than shelved demos, too). it basically boils down to a $30 single, which is sort of twisted! just like getting "first love, last rights" for roughly $20 was ludicrous, because that, too, is essentially a single for me. (a DAMN good single, though!!) Anyhow, I feel your pain. Sometimes I really beat myself up, telling myself that all of you people on this list are working harder to get more rare, obscure Liz stuff, and that I'm going to be the only Liz phan left in the cold with out the cool, hard-to-find liz tracks....then I come to my senses, and that feeling of inadequacy goes away..... luckily, I can rest easy because I have mostly everything that people talk about on here, but i still need a bootleg of the current tour..... always wanting more! DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE TO GET THE "POLYESTER BRIDE" JAPANESE IMPORT?!?!?!?! (have the vinyl, want that third track on disc, though.) :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 23:51:21 -0500 (EST) From: liza kosciuch Subject: the new single hey everybody, i am the proud owner of a 12x12 wcse poster that i got through ebay. anyhow, the point of this is that on the back of it, it says wcse featuring "polyester bride" and "what makes you happy." i take this to mean that "what makes you happy" is going to be the next single since polyester bride has already been released. so all you guys who predicted that "happy" was going to be the new single are probably right. i think it's a good choice, but i think the title track is amazing and would be an excellent single. liza ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 00:37:36 -0800 From: jtconnolly Subject: Re: support-system-digest V1 #91 I know I'm not supposed to qoute so much in a reply, but this is simply the most brilliant song list and "fantasy" Liz concert ever dreamed up...it is so worthy of being reproduced again, for all to enjoy once more, that i felt the need to do it: (thanks, Lucas, for the vision) > And here's my Liz Phantasy Concert Set List: > EVeryone's milling around, waiting impatiently for LIZ. NEXT: > And one more note--I was at the Roseland show in > NYC and I have to speak back to all those people who were saying that no > one was dancing and that the crowd was stuffy. ...IT WAS! but i wasn't!! :) NEXT: > What do you think the most likely choice for the new single will be? On the "flat" (the small, two-sided poster hung in record srores) to promote WCSE, "what makes you happy" is listed as a single along with PB. i don't think there is much mystery to it...this will be the next single. I think is is MUCH more radio-friendly than polyester bride. Your average raio-listening chump can't relate to Henry and alligator boots and flapping wings to fly away, etc. (which is fine with me, good, actually...i do not say this as a knock on the song.) However, WMYH is pretty straight forward...Mom/daughter conversation..."whatever makes you happy" at the end of the day!! ...i think a lot more people can relate. the music is poppier also, with probably a bigger/stronger hook. just my opinion, but i think it has the potential to do better than PB. LAST: > Any takers on how big a song "Perfect World" would be if Celine Dion sang > it? very scary thought....yikes. see ya.
