The rest of the time I have just been following along, so I thought I would take a few minutes to write an introduction as I've seen many others do. I'm a 20 year old student at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. I'm in my 4th year of a 5 year BS/MS in Accountancy program--pretty exciting. I'm originally from Wytheville, Virginia. I'm engaged to be married next summer. My fiancee is actually the one who introduced me to Liz's music a couple years ago. I think I'm a bigger fan than he is now, but fortunately Liz's CDs are some of the few that we both like to listen to. My other music interests vary--lots of 80s stuff, Indigo Girls, and a few other things, but I've been stuck on Liz for a while now. The only other interesting fact I can think of is that--for whoever mentioned it the other day--I also read comic books, although I haven't gotten into the new Daredevil book yet. All the issues are here, I just haven't had time to read them. The only books I never fail to read each month are Preacher, Robin, and X-Men. That's about it for me. Thanks to everyone for such a great list--I really enjoy reading it every day. And here's my Liz Phantasy Concert Set List: Um, let me turn off Gun Shy Trigger Happy for a sec... EVeryone's milling around, waiting impatiently for LIZ. Suddenly, the lights go off. Everyone screams, right? But not for long, cause soon, the opening chords of May Queen can be heard, apparently coming from nowhere. Then she starts singing. "Don't .. be .. fooled .. by .. him .. heeeeee's .. fi-i-ine.." the lights are gradually fading up, we can actually see her dim silhouette now,and her guitar. "Rock and roll ken doll, he's a national end-all, he's an off .. and on Friend - Of - Mi-ine" CHug Chug CHUGGA CHUG CHUG!! And then the explosions go off on either side of her!, her band bounces on stage from trampolines hidden on either side, giant inflatable hogs are sent soaring out over the audience, and the once docile crowd turns into a writhing, jumping, sweating, laughing organism, teased to the point of sexual ecstasy, and now taken over the edge! May Queen - sets the tone for the entire concert: intense; Mesmerizing - Liz plays the solos on this one! As she does, the part of the stage she's standing one rises slowly up, til' she's like 20 feet above the rest of the stage. But is she scared? Hell NO! She closes her eyes during most of the song, and grimaces sexily when appropriate. Beginning to See the Light You Have No Idea Don't Have Time- I hope she can do the weird outro in concert; it'd even better if she just kinda made it up herself vocally, like I always do when I'm singing along to it :)"Wow wow wow wow ow ow!" Stratford-on-Guy - (This concert is designed to give your lungs a rest between the songs that'll have you screaming all the way through; this is one of the screaming songs.) I'll Get You High Divorce Song Johnny Feelgood - ok, she plays the solos on all her songs Polyester Bride - everyone in the audience is singing along, EVERYbody. Luckily, the audience at my Phantasy Concert is composed of mostly professional singers and dancers, including the Vienna Boys Choir, who did sweet backup on Beginning to See the Light. They sound good on this one too, though. #She exits. Ten minutes of hooting and hollering later, she re-takes the stage, and plays California, then blows me a kiss as she leaves. I discovered Eve's Plum and Liz Phair within the same 6-month period -- 1992-1993 -- and neither has left my cd player since. Colleen is an amazing singer AND performer. She and Kay Hanley (of Letters to Cleo) both endeared themselves to me immediately by always being gracious to their fans and thanking them for their applause after nearly every song. I was finally able to meet Colleen in late 1997 during one of Eve's Plum's final shows. The band had broken up, but was playing a limited number of shows as a farewell. Anyway, she's truly cool and deserves some support whenever her solo album comes out. FYI, though, she did not form Eve's Plum. She answered an ad in the Village Voice for a band looking for a singer. She was a struggling actress looking for a way to pay the bills in between films. If anyone is interested in some rare stuff from EP, I have a few of their concerts on video, tape and cd. I'd trade for any of the rare Liz tapes (shelved demos, girly sounds, etc.) Just send me an email. And on another note -- I was in Hampton for Phish, also. Liz and her music have never sounded more polished, multi-faceted, and yummy. Liz, it was worth the 4-year wait! :^) Re: Liz songs to sing loud - well, I sing *out* loud to all of her songs, all the time. Singing loud (ie., volume) is obviously appropriate to the songs that are written loud & rocking. The softer, quieter songs get soft, quiet singing in my car, office and house. Especially good for the loud treatment are Fuck or Die (but, um, not at work), the backing vocals in Never Said, Mesmerizing, Supernova, Jealousy, May Queen, Big Tall Man, Johnny Feelgood, ah, many more... I've seen Aimee Mann mentioned so many times on this list that I wanted to share my (distant) connection with her. My ex-fiance's brother is an independent producer in the Northeast, well-known in Boston (where he used to live) and Syracuse, NY (where he now lives). He has worked a lot with Aimee, and I'll bet that if I had begged and pleaded when I was still with my ex, his brother might have arranged for me to meet her. First off, I read the digests all out of order and ended up right away sending off a very warm note to that MEfest guy who was offering the Girly Sound CDs--and then working backwards to earlier digests, I was horrified to learn of his true scumbag nature. So following Jason's advice, I'm writing to the list and am wondering if any one knows how I can get a copy of Girly Sounds on CD or would be willing to make me one--I'd be really grateful, and I just don't feel like a happy Liz fan without it. I don't have any Liz stuff to send in return, but postage, whatever funds you need, and my thanks will be sent your way. My second shock was that Liz is canceling concerts--but I was feeling bad because I had actually half-dreamed of being crazy and riding the bus to Dallas to see her (someone on this list said he was doing it, and I sat at my desk and got all inspired) and then the gods of laptops and laundry and laziness got me, and I never made those plans. So, I'm sort of glad (no one hit me here) at least that I didn't get all fired up, only to have the concert canceled. Also wanted to say thanks to Jason for recommending Jen Trynin--she's great and for a while overtook Liz in my CD rack. I got GSTH, and now will go out and find the first one. And one more note--I was at the Roseland show in NYC and I have to speak back to all those people who were saying that no one was dancing and that the crowd was stuffy. Really, I think I stood almost dead still the entire time--but I couldn't help it--my greatest desire was just to stare and listen and suck in all the Liz I could get. So that's my explanation, maybe it holds true for others. I was intensely happy, but didn't want to miss a second of her. I'm sure 70-80% of the people that did yesterday were foreigners... ...anyway, how 'bout this for a new poll: just read the digest about "taking time off" and re-scheduling dates to promote the "new single." (I really feel bad for everyone's heartbreak stories) 1) What do you think the most likely choice for the new single will be? & 2) What do you think the most interesting choice / what do you wish it would be? I'd probably choose "What Makes You Happy" on the first question (obvious reasons?), and given that "Shitloads Of Money" is probably an impossible choice, I'd probably say...god, there's a few...I think "Uncle Alvarez" would be the most interesting choice. I remember the first time I heard it, I thought "what the hell?" I mean, does anyone else write songs like that? Of course, "Perfect World," et al would be an interesting choice, because it's only 2 minutes long. Any takers on how big a song "Perfect World" would be if Celine Dion sang it? I'd really love a copy of the Girlysound sessions on CD. I've heard them, but have yet to obtain my own copy. I'd be eternally grateful to get my hands on them. I have some live stuff to trade (no Liz) but it's all on tape. If someone would email me, maybe we could set something up. Thanks a lot.
