With respect to the upcoming Chicago Shows Tape Tree, I for one would be prepared to convert from tape, and distribute CD copies of these shows as a "CD Branch" to .au with funky inserts and labels at cost. I've recently converted most of my live tapes to cd format and the sound quality didn't deteriorate. I think the quality conversion process is an important caveat for anyone who becomes a CD branch. Anyway I hope I'm not preempting the tree inappropriately with my offer. :) Jason, I'm in anticipation of the rest of your concert/road trip review. chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 00:20:31 PST From: "Mark Schmidt" Subject: re: people ripping people off, and CD-Rs Amen to everyone participating in ripping MEfest a new a**hole. He does deserve it. When he first offered CDs, I inquired. When I found out what he was up to, I politely declined his offer, but promised to get a free copy of his CDs first chance I got. Seems they aren't even his CDs, though, huh? Anyway, someone posted that if he has enough money to buy a CD burner, he doesn't need to be ripping people off. I had just assumed that he was trying to get US all to PAY for his CD recorder, as if he didn't buy it for his own personal use. From some of what he said, though, I think he may not even be that smart. He may be paying someone else to press these things in small batches, which is WAY more expensive than making them himself. In any case, just don't buy bootlegs. Get them from your friends here for free. And especially don't buy HIS bootlegs. I had been hoping the Columbus, OH date might be rescheduled sometime. I gave up on that a while ago. Now the dates are disappearing left and right. First Liz is cancelling dates the management made that she didn't agree to. Now supposedly management is cancelling dates Liz was ready to play. How long before one or the other gets tired of this game, and the shows just stop coming, period? And though I'm sure no one here is going to give up, do you suppose this is winning any new fans over? Oh sure, you get your money back. It was what, a $15 ticket? With a $3.50 Ticketbastard service charge? And oops, they don't give that part back, do they? Sit back and let the old man tell you a story, kids (29 years old today--feeling ancient :) Long ago I started to like a band called KISS. I went to college in California, and bought tickets my first month there to see the last show of their then-current tour. My first KISS show ever. Cancelled. Too late to go to any other show. 15th row tickets down the drain. Next tour, they play at home while I'm at college; at college while I'm at home. Meanwhile, lead singer Paul Stanley does a solo tour of little clubs and theaters. Playing 12 blocks from my dorm room. During my spring break. And they announce this 2 days after I buy my non-refundable ticket home for break. Next tour: out of college, living in Ohio. Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus dates announced. I wait for Columbus to go on sale. I miss Cinci and Cleveland. Columbus never happens. A couple years later, KISS decides to play a few festival-type shows over the summer. No big show, no pyro, no video screens. And they're going to dig out old classics they haven't played live for a long time, or EVER. And when they announce one date in Chicago, I'm on the phone to my cousins there to buy tickets immediately. It was a great show. And would've been even if I hadn't waited 5 years to see it. Cut to this year. A Liz fan since the early days of Guyville, there had never been a show near me. No chance to see her. And this fall, I hear she's coming to Columbus, Ohio. Right here where I live. And coming RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY HONEYMOON TRIP TO HAWAII. Umm...no changing those plans, huh? So I'm on the Internet, just praying for some other date I can manage, and... Two days after my wedding, after buying luggage, organizing, and packing all day, I drag my new wife 4 hours each way to see Liz in Pontiac, Michigan. From the time the show ends, we have 8 hours to drive back, sleep, and get on the plane to Hawaii. We got to the show three songs late, and the show seemed so short anyway, and we were way in the back, and I was a little disappointed. But now I'm SOOOO glad I went. Cause it is again the way it was back then---Liz only plays a show about every 19th blue moon during rabbit season (or something like that!) I hope you have enjoyed my story. And I have some small consolation for all those returning their tickets this week for refunds: When there are only a couple dozen Liz shows, EVER, how hard can it be to collect them all on tape? :) - ---Mark ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 05:34:33 PST From: "Jennie Scheinbach" Subject: there is nothing wrong with feminism Peter, MrE, TMC, a Sarah, others: I've got to admit something. I've never actually seen the oh so controversial alanis video. I don't have cable (WHAT?! - it's true!) and hardly watch tv and so haven't been...er, priviledged to actually see the bum in question. That said, i was going to leave this whole thing alone but the backlash (that's right kids, you got me - i AM a feminist) has got me to thinkin... For me, the main issue is that there are tons of, dare i say, impressionable? youngsters on this digest that might begin to think (or if they already think this way, it would be reinforced) that: 1) it is cool and ok to judge people based on the size of their bums 2) that the size of one's bum (if you aren't that one's sweetie) actually matters at all accept for to certain people who perhaps have skewed value systems 3) that there is NOWHERE that is safe from judgement based on the physical... The fact that 900 people read this digest takes it out of the realm of commenting to your friends while watching MTV that Alanis needs to be shot. Also, there is the "minor" point that women don't need any more judgement based on how attractive they are perceived to be. No, Peter, TMC, (and others): anorexia, bulemia, excessive dieting, the compulsion to wear makeup (not that it's always a compulsion)... Certainly none of these are the fault of any of you who choose to judge women based on the way we look [the root of the blame for these problems (and, more significantly, the concept of judging women based on looks) can, at least in the Western world, probably be placed on the old testament and other early religious literature that, when it gave women names at all, described them in terms of their physical beauty and seductiveness... but i digress], but by characterizing a concern for these legitimate societally reinforced problems with politically correct nonesense (as a friend of mine once said, politcal action and correctness can only substitute for personality for so long), you are perpetuating the problem. As a woman, it's tremendously annoying that a woman's appearance (i.e. attractiveness to men) always has to be an issue (not the issue, necessarily - in this case, the central issue is that most of us think that alanis sucks - but an issue nonetheless). Jennie p.s.1. I've read Rants, and Dennis Miller is definetly more p.c. than me. p.s.2. Track 6 is "Polyester Bride" by, of course, Liz Phair. It was recorded in Rockville (don't go back, reckon) around June/July 1998. WHFS sponsors exclusive live performances by bands passing through DC/Baltimore. I caught a re-broadcast of this gig the day before Liz played at the 9:30 club in DC last October. Anyhow, this version of "Polyester Bride" is unpolished and less produced than the studio take. Liz's voice is a bit shaky which makes this recording endearing as the band was still learning the song at this point. But, alas, this CD is only available to the privileged(?) people living in the DC/Baltimore area and is sold through Starbucks. The CD is elaborately packaged in cardboard and contains other great songs from the likes of Bare Naked Ladies, James, and Sarah. A great deal for $10. Tanya's recent solo album is great as well and well worth checking out. Also, sorry non-Belly fans, isn't Broken great, it's a shame you have to buy either the Twister or Mallrats soundtracks to get what is probably their best song. Ok, sorry i'm freaking out , i am getting to the point, i have to fax her a list of names on letterhead tommorow. Do you think it is worth the sketchiness of saying that we all work for the City? For Liz, anything is worth it and the City is so huge. But what if Liz ends up cancelling and this FNX lady finds out i tried to scam her and i lose my glamorous job as a pee-on office assistant? ok, that's paranoid and it would never happen. but i had to say it. bottom line: Anyone who wants to go to this show write me a private email Katie.Brown@ci.boston.ma.us with your name and opinion of this situation. You're right in saying that King's more of a band record, too. 2)Tanya's solo album was the best thing to come out in ages. DEFINITELY buy it. It was the only thing I listened to until WCSE came out (and for thjose of you who know Tanya, that's been a fairly long time). 3)Broken is definitely a great song, but you don't need the soundtracks. It's a b-side on a few vinyl releases (only Seal My Fate comes to mind at the moment). Broken is good, but my favorite b-side is Sweet Ride. It's probably my favorite Belly song overall, actually.
