The one in Lawrence, KS hasn't been announced yet. Luckily, I work for The Kansas City Star, so I'll let everyone know as soon as the promoter calls us. On a totally random note, everyone would be well served to check out Wes Cunningham's _12 Ways to Win People to Your Way of Thinking._ It's an absolutely brilliant, mesmerizing album. Your points are well-taken about generational loss. I think as long as there are digital branches to the tree, we'll all be happy. And no one should get a bad tape. All: As far as tape length goes, the shows you listed were all around 85 minutes, I think you said. A CD is 74 minutes. I just finished cleaning up my tape of the Avalon show to burn to CD, and after losing most of the cheering between songs, a little of the less interesting stage patter, and the space between the main set and encores, the whole show winds up being only about 60 minutes long. Unless the Chicago shows are already edited down, I bet they could each be fit on a single CD with some careful planning. No promises, but it occurred to me to introduce myself to the list, and especially the tape trading part of it, by burning an extra copy of this disc and sending it out to make the rounds to anyone on the list interested in a copy. It looks like it'll have the whole Avalon Boston radio broadcast, as well as the 4 tracks performed in-studio on Morning Becomes Eclectic. PS I have a CD recorder. Anyone else who does, who wants to share tips or make CD-R trades (I remember at least one person talking about it) please email me. - ---Mark ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 02:09:59 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: well... Honestly, I can see your point here, but at the same time, when I post something in a forum other than this one, I somehow expect whatever I write to stay within that forum. It was intended for whatever forum I chose to post it to, and I really wouldn't expect it to turn up anywhere else. I could quite easily do a search on DejaNews and reprint here postings that other list members have made in various newsgroups. Not that I would ever do that, but if I were to, I wouldn't be surprised if these people were upset with me for doing so. And I should know to expect that. I'm probably not explaining how I feel about this very well, but can you see what I'm trying to say here? It may not technically be an invasion of privacy, but it does feel like a violation of sorts. >however, in that my attempt reveal >a positive aspect of your humanity was perceived as sordid and ill >begotten and regardless of commission or omission, it was taken as an >offense. therefore, you have my apology. I really didn't understand what your motivation was for posting that. I couldn't really interpret what you had written, but since you said yourself that it was in poor taste, I assumed that your intentions weren't good. I had no way of knowing otherwise. >and with regard to my having sent something in html, in that i >have not previously done so, why would i now? notwithstanding, there >remains the fact of programming that disallows this, except in the case >of a glitch... See, that's what I couldn't understand either: Why you would suddenly send a post with HTML encoding after I had stated on the list not to, when you had been posting correctly all along. Since I sent my message on posting guidelines to the list, I've actually noticed an increase of people not following them. Almost all of these, however, were administrative requests that thankfully bounced to me and didn't make it to the list, but it left me really frustrated after what I had written. I had pointed out a problem, and now it seemed as though people were just doing it to be contrary. I really do love running this list, but sometimes I don't have a lot of extra time to do so, and little things like that can grow to be quite frustrating at times. I'm sorry if I was harsh when I pointed out the post in question; I really didn't intend to be, but I also really wondered what was up. Also, I will admit, I probably wouldn't have reacted as strongly if it weren't for the newsgroup posting you reprinted, the intentions behind which I didn't understand. >having said all, there still remains a degree of puzzlement...if you >have read my previous postings, then you have also read my disclaimers. >so why then was my post concerning alex and his choices taken to a level >not intended? even more bewildering is the castigation that followed. if >alex is offended, then let alex address his issue to >mre3000@earthlink.net or at the very least an open posting, and my >apologies will be as free flowing as net information... I didn't really mean to single you out in particular, but your post was the freshest in my mind at the time I was writing my message. I just used that as an example of some of the negativity I've seen on the list lately. There have been other examples as well, many of them having to do with the Alanis thread, but not all of them. It just seems that many things that are being posted seem to be looking for a reaction or are trying to bait people, like a recent post that expressed some really harsh comments about Liz's new album. These don't bother me nearly as much as the posts that seem to attack other list members themselves, not their opinions. Maybe a lot of these are meant to be "humorous" or "good-natured," but they don't always come across as such. Normally I let things slide as much as possible, try to give the benefit of the doubt. When I notice things myself, I figure maybe it's just me who is responding in such a way, but when other list members email me to complain about things that have been posted to the list, I figure something must be wrong at that point. Even if Alex himself wasn't offended, your comments might have offended others to whom they weren't directed but who still felt strongly about what was said. If I'm a fan of a particular band and I read something that trashes them, you can bet I'm going to be annoyed by it, even if the person who made the comments tells people they are "just kidding" or "not to take them seriously." I'm not saying that this is what you are doing, but it is all too easy to hide behind disclaimers so that you can say whatever you want without having to face any consequences. It's cool if you don't like something, and please feel free to say so if you don't, but to make overly harsh or negative comments is really unnecessary, in my opinion. We're not all going to like the same things, but you can bet for every artist out there, there are both people who enjoy and don't care for their music on this list. When negative statements are made about any artist, you're likely to irk someone. It shouldn't be a problem if someone is making a valid constructive criticism, people should see what is being said and respect it. But when something being said is extremely negative, it's quite possible it will offend. We should all be responsible for how we present our opinions. Back to the issue of disclaimers (again, I'm not saying this is necessarily what anyone on the list is doing -- I tend to use things as sounding boards to bounce ideas off of), it somewhat strikes me at times as being the equivalent of a comedian saying something really off-color then backing it up with the defense of, "It's only a joke," then making it look like the problem really lies with the person who can't take the "joke." If you know there's a chance that you may offend someone with something you're going to say, it might be best not to say it or find a different way of expressing it. At the same time, I will admit, this does seem a little extreme, like nothing can be said at all. I don't want anyone to feel that way, I just want to make sure everything remains civil on this list as much of the time as possible. Personally, I love a good debate as much as anyone else, and well, honestly, at times I'm sure all of us take things much more seriously than we should. I will freely admit that I've been guilty of this. Sometimes when you feel strongly about something, it's hard to step back and look at it objectively. Things can also be easily misinterpreted no matter how hard you try for them not to be. I'm kind of going all over the place with this post and it's pretty disjointed, so I'll try to bring it back to one of my original points, about the negativity witnessed on the list as of late. As I said before, I just don't see why any time or effort should be wasted on writing about things you don't enjoy when you can write about something you do. The whole Alanis thread stemmed from a couple of negative posts about her, when she wasn't even a topic of discussion on the list. The overwhelming majority on this list don't seem to care for her at all, so I wonder why so much time was wasted in bringing her up as a topic in the first place, then spent engaging in a lengthy discussion of her when she clearly doesn't mean a lot to the people on this list. Maybe it's just me, but I can't be bothered to waste time on writing about someone I don't like when I could be discussing artists and bands like Liz Phair, Pavement, and Jen Trynin, all of whom I consider to be exceptional at what they do. There are many musicians who I don't really care for, some of whom have been listed by other list members as favorites, but I'm not going to bring them up on the list when I have other things I could discuss. If I were to bring up one of these people and make a series of negative remarks about them (not a criticism related to a prior post), even if I warned everyone not to take me seriously, I would know and expect that my remarks would be off-putting to some. At the same time, I guess some people just "tell it like it is" for them. I used to be more like that myself, but at this point, I'd rather just focus on things that are a little more positive. Anyway, I must say that one great thing came out of the Alanis thread, which, to me, was rather negative at times: The question (I'm sorry, but I don't remember off-hand who asked it) of how we would feel about Liz if she were to weigh forty pounds more, if it would change our perception of her. I really thought this could lead to some interesting discourse, so I was sad to see it didn't receive much of a response. >now, if you care to invoke your authority and remove my membership, then >by all means, do so. it is, after all, your list, which entitles you to >do with it whatsoever you chose. but do it in context... Oh no, I'm not about to remove anyone's membership to this list. No one has said or done anything to warrant anything that extreme. I just hope we can all find more positive topics to discuss. We're all obviously very passionate about the music we enjoy, so let's talk about it, or constructively debate about it if we so choose. I don't want us all to be followers and think alike -- feel free to disagree, make your own interpretations, but as I've said, try to keep it civil as possible. For the record, I've never removed anyone from this list, and honestly, I don't expect I'll ever have to. Even on the few occasions there have been flames on this list, it's still always been a lot more enjoyable than almost any other I've come across. Maybe that's part of why I feel so strongly about keeping it that way. Also, I should point out, not everything in this post refers to any one individual. Some of it is in direct response to what MrE wrote, but a lot of it just uses what he expressed as something to bounce my own ideas and thoughts off of. Okay, I just wasn't sure if the two trees were getting mixed up or not, and thought it might be a good idea to point that out. Sorry about the misunderstanding. With both DAT and analogue branches on this tree, I really think we will be fine. Everyone should get a great-sounding copy. I think I will go ahead with things as planned for now, just to get this underway before everyone gets busy, what with the holiday season rapidly approaching. I am intrigued by the CD-R option though, and again, if someone is willing to help me out with it, I think I'd like to pursue it in the future. It seemed that quality loss was the main concern this time around, but since there will be digital copies, I'm sure we'll be more than fine for now. This is a good idea, although it would take more organisation, but personally I would prefer it on CD even though I don't have a cd burner. If there are that many people on the list with cd burners would it be possible to divide the burning between you and send them out to everyone for whatever charge. For those who have been asking about Jen Trynin and her album _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_, I really do recommend that you check her music out. She is both a great musician and songwriter, and while I love Hole, PJ Harvey and many other artists who have achieved a similar level of success, I really have to wonder why Jen's music hasn't caught on the way theirs has. While both of Jen's albums are excellent, they are so in different ways. _Cockamamie_ is a little rawer in its approach and has more of a "live band" sound to it, which makes it the more rocking album of the two. _Gun Shy_ is more varied in its approach and finds Jen stretching out in different directions, exploring different sounds and arrangements. Both albums contain solid songwriting, flawless sequencing, Jen's sometimes husky vocals (which I love; her voice is one of her strongest assets), and her remarkably proficient guitar playing. Not that Jen sounds a lot like Liz, but if I were to use Liz's albums as a comparison point, I would liken _Cockamamie_ to _Exile_ in its rawness. I would also say that _Gun Shy_ expands on the production style much the way _Whip-Smart_ and _whitechocolatespaceegg_ have for Liz, and is a little more accessible as a result. Yet at the same time, I would say that _Gun Shy_ is comparable to _Exile_ in terms of being the more emotionally direct of her albums. This is all just my opinion though, others may disagree with me. Either way, whichever one you choose, you're not likely to go wrong since they are both incredible albums, and there's a lot to recommend about each one. Also, I did see Jen when she was touring in support of _Gun Shy_, and at that time, it was the best show I had ever been to. Since then, however, it has been eclipsed by Liz's show in Toronto last month, which was beyond incredible. For the Jen fans on the list, I just found out this week that she is to appear on a benefit compilation entitled _Respond_, which will be released in the Boston area sometime next month. I'm not sure if Jen's track will be a new recording or not, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be. Among the other artists to be featured on the disc are Mary Lou Lord and Juliana Hatfield, both of whom seem to have a lot of fans on this list. Aimee Mann is well worth checking out as well, and while either of her solo albums are a good place to start, her final album with 'Til Tuesday, _Everything's Different Now_ is also great in its own right. > And if you like those two, I urge you to pick up the debut solo >album by Joan Jones. Both her albums >are outstanding. I haven't heard anything by Joan Jones yet, but I will enthusiastically endorse Amy Rigby's debut _Diary of a Mod Housewife_. Again, another much overlooked but amazing songwriter. Her music is somewhat country-tinged, but if that's not a turn-off for you, be sure to give her a listen. I still haven't been able to find her new album anywhere, but I can't wait to hear it. I'll likely end up mail ordering it soon, since I've just about given up searching for it. Slow, archaic, etc. So... yeah! Join me here! Anyway, the reason why I am posting today is: One of Vienna's coolest radiostations (well, actually it is the only radio station that plays really good music here) has a Belle and Sebastian special next week. They will broadcast a concert from the 5th October where they played in Paris, and there will also be an interview. I am not really a big fan of Belle and Sebastian, but I noticed that a couple of people from this list do like them a lot. I am gonna tape all of it so if anybody's interested in getting a copy let me know. On the subject "where do we live": If you wanna take a look on what Vienna (Austria) is like, here are the two movies I could come up with that I know were shot in Vienna - The third man, Before Sunrise. alrighty - gotta go now, Martina ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 17:00:56 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Re: Liz Phair on the IRC... a proposition At 02:05 PM 11/18/98 -0500, Nicole wrote: >Okay... Our channel name is #wcse, and we can be found on EFnet most evenings. There are quite a few regulars now, and it's really been a lot of fun to take part in real-time discussions. We're not always completely on-topic, but it's been a great way for some of us list members to get to know each other. Anyway, I'd like to extend an invitation to anyone who'd like to join us -- please feel free to stop by and chat for a while. We always welcome any new participants! Has anyone heard any news on why this show has been cancelled? I just got finished booking a couple of days off work so I could travel down to Philly, as I'm dying to see Liz live again, and I was hoping to meet a few more list members at the show. Might it be rescheduled? I hope so -- I really was looking forward to this. Let's keep our fingers crossed that none of the other shows get cancelled! Hey all... God I've missed this list! I been weeding out all the guyville posts since that list is back up. Man miss a week on e-mail and you're swamped!....they've changed my work schedule and put me on days (for us night owls its sheer murder) so I have not been able to keep up with the list. I'm still working thru ss #73 right now so if any of these comments seem dated well they are! I havent even been able to listen to Liz all that much..but working weekends is a plus cuz we can wear shorts (I stuff my CD Walkman in my shorts pocket with WCSE and groove, she really lifts me up when I'm down...try that with regular pants!) I think the thread about Alannis' butt is hilarious! The other week on SNL David Spade made a comment about her video and her "huge box" hehe.. anyway work and home (ie wife) are sucking the life out of me and the only thing keeping me going is my music ...which reminds me for all of you looking for wcse tabs try http://www.btinternet.com/~gez.gtr/liz.html I don't know what he has new there but there should be some there... I see Liz is coming to Atlanta.....what I need is a Florida date tho' I would steal the babys milk money to go see her (no baby so dont kill me). Has anyone noticed Matadors site has been down?...I couldnt get in the other day... Just for discussion purposes (not that I would EVER do such a thing..) Has anyone ever tripped and listened to Liz? It was awesome!(or so I've heard...ahem) A big Hi to Jen and AngelLieb (btw e-mail me I grew up in St.Pete too!) Anyways all of you all are great I get a kick out of the threads....and yes those are electron patterns on WS I remember reading it somewhere. More later when I catch up with the next wave......
