I was planning to put up some mp3's soon, but I don't think even they are small enough to do the trick. One tape is gonna take something like 70MB, and that's a lot of space. Here's my brilliant idea, which I already forwarded to Ken Lee. Step 1: Edit up a nice CD (or set of CDs) of whatever material is to be circulated, at the home of some competent CD-R owner from the list. Step 2: Circulate said CD(s) to all participants with CD-R recorders, who make a copy for themselves, and one to circulate. This isn't too much to ask of us (yep, I'm one of those CD-burning guys), since blanks can be had for $1.00 and under. Step 3: Circulate CD copies to "tree." Step 4: if the CD copies survive the experience in good shape, either raffle them somehow, give them to the person who supplied the source material, something like that. All the tapers get to tape off an exact digital copy, and all the people making the CD copies get the privilege of one for themselves. Anyway, questions, comments, complaints, and concerns are welcome. - ----Mark ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 00:53:48 -0600 (CST) From: kenmlee@ix.netcom.com (Kenneth Lee) Subject: Liz / Jane I should mention this... In response to Katie's (Katiek126@aol.com) curiosity about Jen Trynin's "Gun Shy Trigger Happy" (and I know Jason and Derek would agree with me), this is one MUST-HAVE album. Jen's music has a bit of a harder edge, but she definitely has a 'Liz Phair' type thing going on. She has two major releases under her belt... 1994's "Cockamamie" and of course 1996's "Gun Shy Trigger Happy". I prefer the latter, but "Cockamamie" was just as good. Awhile back, I was going to conduct a Jen Trynin mailing list. I'm still thinking about it, but I have it on hold. I'm working on a site right now as well. Anyway, I know I probably didn't answer the question you asked regarding Jen and her music, but I had to re-iterate how incredibly talented she is. She is truly overlooked in regards to media attention... much like Aimee Mann. So Katie, buy GUN SHY TRIGGER HAPPY. Buy it now!!! Actually, Ken has nothing to do with this tape tree -- this tree is for the three Chicago shows from the current tour, not the studio tapes Ken is bidding on to purchase. I am the one who is organizing this tree, the material for which is being graciously offered by another list member who taped the three shows. >Step 1: Edit up a nice CD (or set of CDs) of whatever material is to be >circulated, at the home of some competent CD-R owner from the list. > >Step 2: Circulate said CD(s) to all participants with CD-R recorders, >who make a copy for themselves, and one to circulate. I agree that this is a good idea, for several reasons. As you mentioned, even mp3's of these shows would result in huge files -- I don't know anyone who has that amount of space to store the files, and I know I certainly couldn't play the files myself if I were to download them. My computer would choke on those, due to not having enough memory. I'm sure many others might be in the same boat. I do, however, at the same time don't think the quality loss is such a great issue as it's been made out to be. The way we've organized trees on this list in the past, no one has ever got anything lower than a second generation copy of the source tape. Also, the people who I will select as branches will be those with the highest quality dubbing equipment. With these tree, seeing as how the list has grown so huge since the last tree we've organized, we may have to go down one further generation, but even then, the quality should still be quite good. Also, this tree will be the first one that isn't analogue only; if there is any interest, we will establish some DAT branches, and maybe some people who receive DAT copies can make copies for analoguers. I am certainly interested in the CD option, but I wonder how many people even have CD burners? I know that I don't myself, although I do plan on acquiring one sometime in the future (probably after I get my next income tax return). Also, since we've never done this before, it might take a lot of extra time for me to organize it, and I'd like to get this underway as soon as possible. Maybe we can put this in place for the next tree, which will consist of the material Ken is purchasing? Also, one other consideration, none of these shows will fit on a single CD. All three shows are in the 82-86 minute range, which would mean multiple discs for each. I'd personally like to stick to the cassette and DAT options for this tree, as it will be much easier for me to organize, having no prior experience with what you are proposing. If someone would like to step forward and offer to assist me with this, then it might not be such a problem, or it might be something we can do in the future with this material after we distribute it in this manner first. Anyway, I'm open to further suggestions or comments, but as I plan on announcing the sign-ups for this tree right away, it'd be best to get this settled as soon as possible, so we don't hold up the next tree for Ken's tapes (as well as other trees I have planned for the future). The Dallas and Houston shows have not been rescheduled yet, but hopefully will be soon. They should be happening sometime in December. A lot of people seem unaware of this, but ALL of Liz's November tour dates have been postponed. The only date Liz is playing in November is the WFNX gig in Boston on the 30th, which tickets cannot be purchased for, but must be won. Apparently this will be broadcast live, as will the WBCN Christmas Rave on December 1, which Liz is also on the bill for. If I find out any more news about the shows being rescheduled, I will post it to the list. I can see how this might be a little confusing, so I'll give a quick explanation here. The list, ever since I moved it to this server, has been available in two forms: the digest version (which I subscribed all of the old subscribers to when I moved the list over, as that is what everyone was used to), or a loose-mail version, in which you receive each message individually as soon as it is sent to the list. The majority of the list members are subscribed to the digest option, which makes sense, as receiving all of the messages individually can be a little overwhelming, but there are some people who aren't. Because they're receiving everything in real-time, they are able to respond to messages much sooner, as they don't have to wait for the next digest to read everything and reply. If anyone is interested in switching from the digest format and receiving all of the posts as they are sent to the list, you can do so by sending an email to with the following in the body of the message: unsubscribe support-system-digest subscribe support-system The posting address is still and will send your message to both formats of the list. I hope this explains everything; if not, feel free to let me know if you have any questions. When the single of "Only Son" remixed by Puffy Combs (with the sound of Liz cracking her knuckles in the studio for ten minutes as a bonus track) is released, I'll probably drop $50 for that one, too. Because I'm a Liz Phair phanatic, and I'm proud of what I am. Just don't tell my wife how much that Japanese CD was . . . **************************************************** "The lunatics have taken over the asylum" - FB3 **************************************************** Sudden fun idea: Be the first person to correctly identify "FB3" (by personal e-mail) and I'll send you a cool tape. - The Human Cannonball ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 23:41:32 -0500 From: "Jacquicee@msn.com" Subject: Handbills Hello again, Boy my 3rd post in 24hrs after not posting for a 1 1/2 months. Regarding Liz handbills I already got 3 people interested as of this time. Since I only have 2 the 1st 2 replies were KOA and Katie Brown. Lucas I got yours 3rd. Sorry. But listen there was actually 3 when I went to that show. I sure I can find at least 1 more, although I am not sure when I'm going again. I usually go like 3 times a year. Also they show up on the Ebay website from time to time although the last bid I saw was $12. I have bought more than a few of these and they are always $5 or $6. I have Hole, Belly, Pavement, Liz, Ani, Tori etc. KOA + Katie B. I can't seem to figure out what your Email address is? Its not listed in your Email and apparently I'm stupid + can't figure it out. Send me your address and I'll mail it. You can send the money after. Katie I will be in Boston, although I'm not the guy w/the 5'2" sweetie. I'm the 6'1" 40 yr. overweight widowed Dad of 2 teenage girls. Were like twins, huh. Just kidding. Let me know what you want to do. Also did you 2 want them laminated? As I said I'll do it for free. Less chance to be damaged. Have to agree with Jason about negativity. There is no such thing as bad music, only different tastes. Just because a song is more complex doesn't necessarily make it better. As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Have to agree w/Jason also regarding Live Thru This not being in top 90 but Celebrity Skin is. Its good but not that good. WBCN has like 6 concerts going the same night as Liz. One has Hole and Garbage. When I 1st found out about Boston I thought they were playing with Liz. That would have been great. See ya, - Bill in CT ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #84 ***********************************
