WHY OH WHY!!! wont' these people at WFNX give me tickets to their birthday batch featuring the phair one... i've begged, i've pleaded, but they say i just have to win them!!!! i am going to fail out of school before i win these tickets... and i am being reminded of how much i hate commercial radio as i have been listening to WFNX for the past 4 and half hours over the internet... i know exactly how long i have been listening cause the nice realaudio player tells me.... and its depressing me... haven't the djs figured out that i would stop harassing them if they would give me the tickets!!! AHHH!!!!! oh, and i emailed carrie at matador to try and figure out this 9:30 club thing... she said she has it as confirmed, but that i should contact the club... so the 9:30 club webpage still has the meters playing on 12/4, so i emailed them and will let you know when (if?) i hear back from them.... maybe i should just accept that 4 liz shows in enough (at least till she hits europe in the spring, since i will be there ).... BUT NO!!! i can NEVER have too many liz shows!! okay.. i'm going to go call the dj and tell him not to give the tickets away in the next 1/2 hour since i need to go to the library to get some reading.... later all (:ruthie:) - -- *******Deceive*******Inveigle*******Obfuscate******* "Wild and unwise, I wanna be mesmerizing, too" "So I hope you all will see, there just isn't a place here for me" "All the stars up in heaven were rushed by an angel, to see the light of your face better" --Liz Phair "I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who's still around the morning after" --Elliott Smith ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 20:07:02 -0600 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: RE:top5 >That's about it. And if I really was stuck on an island, then I know that in about two days I would really regret not having taken something else. Anyway, my top 5... 5) Bush -- "Sixteen Stone" 4) Meridith Brooks -- "Blurring the Edges" 3) Hootie and the Blowfish -- "Cracked Rear View" 2) Spice Girls -- "Spiceworld" 1) Color Me Badd -- "CMB" NOT!!! In all honesty, I own each of these five discs, but if I were stranded with these I think I would puke. "Spiceworld" would be fun, Hootie would bring back some senior-year-in-high-school memories, CMB junior high memories, and Bush is great to listen to (despite the lack of motivation). And Meridith Brooks? I'm wondering why the hell I haven't sold it back yet. Really, though, here are my five desert island discs. I'll even tell you why... 5) Hole -- "Live Through This" I would need one disc that was really hard rock. This would provide it. I think that Courtney Love is one of the greatest lyricists of all times, and the melodies on this album are just about unbeatable. Faves: "Doll Parts," "Asking for It," and "Violet." 4) Janet Jackson -- "The Velvet Rope" I really like the message that this CD delivers. I also think it's clever how she takes seemingly conventional R&B sounds and plays around with them to make them sound so effortless (especially on "I Get Lonely"). "Together Again" has to be the single most upbeat song about AIDS ever written, and "Got 'Til It's Gone" is a masterpiece. Others to listen for on the disc: "Special," "You," and the in-your-face-maybe-inspired-by-Liz "What About?" 3) Radiohead -- "OK Computer" This one really grew on me, and it grew on me hard. I think it has the absolutely perfect sad sound. "No Surprises" is exactly what I need when I'm in a sad mood, although songs like "Paranoid Android" and "Karma Police" are good when I'm pissed. The whole thing is a masterpiece. 2) Shania Twain -- "The Woman in Me" Other than Lucinda Williams and maybe Patty Loveless, I think it's safe to say that Shania Twain is the only woman who has figured out country. While this album is no critical marvel, Shania really evokes her feelings on songs like "The Woman in Me." I also like the playful side she has on "No One Needs to Know" and "You Win My Love." No, I don't think that she has changed the face of music with this album, but she has changed the face of country music by giving the genre a new sound ripe with her own flavor. The follow up is really good, too, but I figure that I'll want something more country-oriented. 1) Madonna -- "Like a Prayer" For me this is, and has been for years, the ultimate CD. Fusing gospel and pop on the title track, Madonna quickly explored house ("Express Yourself"), R&B ("Love Song"), steel guitar ("Til Death Do Us Part"), simple pop ("Cherish"), lullabies ("Dear Jessie"), introspection ("Oh Father"), dance ("Keep It Together"), balladry ("Spanish Eyes") and her mother's death ("Promise to Try"). The surprise ending, however, is "Act of Contrition" where she makes the most alternative pop track ever. Will this album ever be beat? This was really, really hard. And in choosing these five I had to leave behind Madonna's "Erotica," "Bedtime Stories," and "Ray of Light"; Liz's "Exile" and "Whip-Smart"; Belle and Sebastian's "If You're Feeling Sinister"; Lil' Kim's "Hardcore"; Lucinda Williams's "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" and self-titled CD; Garbage's "Version 2.0" and self-titled disc; Missy Elliot's "Supa Dupa Fly"; Portishead; all my PJ Harvey; Sarah McLachlan's "Surfacing"; Lauryn Hill's "Miseducation"; Fugees' "The Score"; Fiona Apple's "Tidal"; George Michael's Greatest Hits; Monica; Mariah Carey's "Butterfly"; Pulp; Pearl Jam; Heather Nova's "Oyster"; Sinead O'Connor; Beastie Boys; Dr. Dre's "The Chronic"; all the Prince CDs; REM; Paula Cole; Pet Shop Boys; and even my LeAnn Rimes "Blue" CD that I really like but pretend not to when my friends aren't around. And Ben Folds Five. And Green Day. And Rancid. I'm glad I'm not stuck on an island... I stayed up late just so I could tell whoever was interested in the 1st Bangles EP. There is an an online auction site called www.ebay.com/ that has a listing for for a mint condition 1982 6 song EP. It didn't list a name but I think this is what you have been looking for.(Dan the 5th Bangle?) You have to register but it cost nothing and takes little time. People list things they want to sell and you can bid or sell stuff. Just go to the above named address and search for Bangles. The auction for this item ends 11/18/98 I forgot what time. The bid at this time is $8 dollars whatever shipping. I just recently bought a few things and had no problem. There is loads of Liz stuff!!! 1st pressing Carnivore 7" singe in red wax. $40 Kinda steep but not for Liz I guess. I'm patiently waiting for this in CD since I don't have a record player. Nor want one. The listings constantly change so if you miss something it will probably be back. On the memorabilia topic for anyone interested, I was at a record show a couple weeks back and found some beatiful Liz Phair 4 x 8" silkscreen handbills from a Michigan concert which I already have. I decided to buty 2 more with the idea someone on this list might like it. Trust me if you like this kind of stuff you will. There is a picture of it on the Ebay website if you search Liz. The bid is all the way up to $12. I bought 2 extra for $5 a piece. I'll even laminate them for you. I have a laminator that does up to 9" wide. I'll give them to you at cost plus shipping. If you are going to Boston show I'll give them to you. I don't mind keeping them if no one wants them. Just thought I'd offer them up. By the way Fran I live in Cheshire, Ct just down the road. Veruca Salt does rock. Also I'd like to mention Kate Bush, Breeders, Sebadoh and anything 4AD to my favorites. I don't want to insult anyone.
