Please advise. - --- end of quoted material --- i still strongly believe that this song is completely a metaphor for smoking pot. inhalation sounds, the idea of being the "last survivor", the whole "psychosomatic" thing. i just listened to the song one day (em, maybe i was smoking pot too. maybe . . .) and it made too much sense. Jennie wrote: now, i loath everything about alanis, but where do you (TMK, i'm talking to YOU) get off dissing her for the size of her butt? em, think about it this way. why would alanis do a video in the buff? she obviously thinks people have the desire to see her naked. i mean, she doesn't exactly possess the wit to create a video strictly for the purpose of grossing out the audience. that isn't what's gonna push sales of her new album, cuz she knows that she isn't going to win over any hard-core marilyn manson fans anytime soon. so, maybe it is wrong to say alanis (ew, just her name is making me nauseous) has a big, fat butt, but it's just a little bit more acceptable when you consider the fact that she seems to THINK (in her deluded, megalomaniacal sort of way) that this is what people want to see. in other words, anyone strutting around naked in their videos is gonna piss me off--what a pretentious display of vanity--and for one to think so highly of him or herself when they do, in fact, have a few flaws is sufficient cause for me to believe that a bit of criticizing is valid. and, as i've said before, i hope they sanitized those bus seats. sarah ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 13:49:17 EST From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: A Spaceeggy profile Well, it turns out that I lost that picture and never turned it in to be laminated. I guess I'll have a friend of mine give me the magazine when she's done with it. Thought of giving myself a nice profile. 18 year old high school senior, feel like 23 though. Youngest of three kids in family, live in Orlando, FL. Have four cats and a dog and each animal is strange in their own way, but you gotta love them! (a drooling cat just to mention one!) I take dance classes, tap, modern and jazz, dancing for nine years now. I love to write poetry. I can knit (strange to find an 18 yr. old who can nowadays!), annoy the crap out of my friends and know how to have fun. Don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Two most fave artists I listen to are Liz and Sheryl Crow. I also listen to Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Stevie Nicks, and Fleetwood Mac. (I listen to others, but the ones I listed are the most played.) I'm hearing impaired, not that it bothers me cuz I grew up with it and know how to handle it. I hate it when people take advantage of me reading their lips. Work at a movie theatre doing concession stand, blagh....don't want to share with everyone what goes into the popcorn! Pointless facts I love to share: I save the blue M&Ms to eat last, have a tattoo, and my mother is a proud owner of FIVE Tamagotchis, but I still love her! She often asks me to watch them for her, strange huh? Short little statements I've written: "Poetry and music are the drugs for my soul." "My heart is of gold but light as a feather." Well, out of nowhere today at school, kids were writing "yo quiero Taco Bell" on the blackboard. I couldn't help myself and had the urge to write, "yo quiero WCSE." hehe! Me am off to find myself a goat to put onto my page. I'll keep in touch w/ everyone on what's going on. Goat......does that ring a bell for some people? I've mostly been reading and having fun seeing what goes on in the heads of Liz fans. Here are some comments after enjoying a few too many digests+++. 1) I was getting antsy so I called Matador to find out about the postponed November dates. "Is Liz sick," I asked with motherly concern. The receptionist chuckled and said Liz is just taking some time off for Thanksgiving. The dates will be rescheduled for December. I had earlier E-mailed Carrie McLaren at Matador and she later replied, "We'll put the new dates up as soon as they're confirmed." It would be fun to get together and meet fellow Liz fans before the Dallas show. The Deep Ellum area has plenty of cool places. More on that later. Hey Steve, you are willing to see Liz via Greyhound !! And I thought I was a Liz fan !! 2) Just to make sure, I listened to "Baby Got Going" last night. It doesn't do anything for me. I haven't seen much written on my current favorite "Headache" one of the real gems on WCSE. I like the line, "You can take me home but I will never be your girl." Throw me off the list, but I don't know what a psychosomatic sister is. I just know I'd like to meet one. 3) I don't care if she has a big ass, Alanis makes me want to throw up. 4) All of these stories of meeting Liz have inspired me. I'm on a mission to meet her in December. 5) Does anyone know where I can order a huge poster of Exile In Guyville? Hey Katie, I'd be up for putting money in for a Liz bumber sticker or a huge poster of Exile. Have I mentioned my interest in a huge poster of Exile? 6) Hey Jennifer, I really liked Stealing Beauty. I thought it had a lot of interesting characters, especially Jeremy Irons and the artist dad. I love the scene where Liv Tyler discovers who her father is. 7) I think the trade tapes idea is great. I can contribute Dead Can Dance, Cat Power, Portishead, Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Freedy Johnston, Replacements etc. 8) When asked about the contents of the glowing briefcase in Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino said, "It's whatever you want it to be. That's not a cop out. It's just better that way." Liz fans get a kick out of scrutinizing every song i.e. the recently dissected "Chopsticks." That makes for some heady debate (Liz, Cindy, Moe). But does it really matter? Who cares what it means, if you like the song. To paraphrase QT, it's whatever you want it to be. That's why I stay away from MTV. I like to attach my own images and meanings to a song. That's what makes art fun. You can personalize it. Not only is Liz's performance on "Erecting A Movie Star" fairly essential for everyone on the List, there are a handful of other songs that are well worth listening to.
