Guess what? on saturday, there was this commercial on mtv advertising "new" music videos to be played starting november 15, Well they used, like, one millisecond of liz's polyester bride vid among others. Does this mean we might actually see her on regular mtv air??? Probably not, but it's nice to think so. Also on the mtv front, they played a new "influences " plug with Ani D., but I am just waiting for Ms. Phair's appearance....Hmmmmm and yes, I know, I've been watching way too much mtv this weekend... I went on a trip to Washington D.C. with a bunch of people from my school (NYU), and I was kinda not looking forward to it because I didn't know anyone in the group. So on the bus trip I listened to Liz (EIG, WS, and WCSE) pretty much the whole way. I felt like I was in my own little Liz-land. Happily, my Discman batteries cooperated the whole way! Anyway, as the weekend progressed and I got to know the other people, I discovered two other Liz phans in the group! Imagine my surprise to find out that they were both at the Roseland show! So we bonded over Liz and ended up singing What Makes You Happy and Polyester Bride in a rest stop bathroom on the way home. Ha! So, that was really cool, I always love meeting other phans. Oh, I also wanted to add that I do watch Felicity; I think people here find it especially entertaining because she supposedly goes to "University of New York", the show's equivalent of NYU. I don't think it's a great show or anything, and it's certainly not realistic (I mean, I WISH my dorm room was that big...) But hello, it's television. I personally love hearing Liz on TV shows, I always get irrationally excited about it. More record sales for her=more Liz phans...I want as many people as possible to appreciate her brilliance, and if new listeners don't, then it's their loss. That's my take on it anyway. By the way, I think the best song on WCSE is Perfect World (LOVE the harmony, the beautiful simplicity of the lyrics and music...). Worst (or my least favorite): Only Son. Okay, I'm done. :) ~Emily ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 22:03:52 EST From: Sue1422@aol.com Subject: Re: support-system-digest V1 #71 please take me off your mailing list thanks ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 22:06:51 -0500 (EST) From: kiskos@webtv.net (Edward Kisko) Subject: Tour dates postponed, ws electrons Bad news, and this is the one time where I wish this list wasn't a digest... How do I know if I'm breaking the news or just repeating news that someone passed on before I had the chance to? The suspense kills me until I get the digest the next morning... anyway, Liz's tour dates, all of them, have been postponed. Except the radio show dates, like the new Boston ones (there's also another on the 30th, in Boston, but I don't know the venue name - it ain't the Avalon, tho). My source, you ask? Janet, the backup singer, my new friend. Now, let's fucking hope that those of us holding *non-refundable* Greyhound tickets (cough, wheeze, heart attack) will get these new dates announced soon enough. In my case, my bus ticket is only good until the 17th of January, so I'm fucking hoping to god that Dallas will happen sometime before then. Otherwise, well, I don't know... Whip-smart electron stuff: I remember hearing how those shapes were not apples and butterflies but electron probability things, and I sort of, at the time, came up w/ the answer to the ? "why did Liz put those there?"). The whole album, Whip-smart, is about a woman's self-discovery, or a relationship from first encounter ("Chopsticks") to kiss-off ("May Queen"). The title (not the title track) "Whip-smart", the term, is used by Liz -and I'm paraphrasing here, but I remember what Liz said, so this isn't bullshit - to describe knowledge that is gained from experience, on the street (so to speak), and not from textbooks. Basically, the story of "whip-smart" (and I can see why Liz originally aspired to create a long-form video for the entire album, comprised of single videos such as the ones that she actually filmed and released), is one of a girl who bumps around the country, has experiences, and goes through a relationship that she shouldn't have pursued in the first place (see: "May Queen", "Cinco de Mayo"). It's just a bunch of stuff that happened, that led up to the heroine's "self-discovery", which she *never* expected to have happen to her. Hence, the electron thing... it kind of symbolizes the whole unpredictability of the experiences the chick from the album goes through, like she's kind of feeling her way somewhat blindly through a relationship, not really knowing where she's going or what she's after (like scientists don't know for sure the position or whatever of those outer-shell e's), but in the end, it all adds up to something important (she's had experience, now she's "whip-smart"), kind of like the electron configuration stuff... fuck. I wish I could explain this better. In fact, I think on Aaron Walker's page (Stratford on Guy), in the FAQ, the answer to the electron thing is there, and if you read it, keeping in mind the info. I've provided here about the underlying theme of Whip-smart, it should make perfect sense. Okay? I'm serious, here. I know what I'm trying to say, I just can't say it... At this point, I have to say, I love Cynthia Nagle's posts. Your explanation of "Chopsticks" was breathtaking. In response to the best/worst wcse track poll, I just have to say that "Love is Nothing" rules. It was, at the time of my guitar "transcription" of it, my fave from the record. There's more there than meets the ear... trust me. It rules. Not that I think it's the 'best'...
