As for Stealing Beauty I thought that movie was really bad. I was watching it last year with a group of friends and everyone but me fell asleep. I was sitting on our apartment's hard wood floor so that's probably the only reason I didn't fall asleep too. Meaningless sex and useless talk is about all that movie is about. unfortunately I wasn't really a Liz fan when I watched it so I got nothing out of it. Did someone say there is a Liz video at the end of the movie? I don't remember that. maybe I was too eager to finally shut the movie off. Don't waste two hours of your life watching that movie. You could do soemthing more worthwhile like listen to EIG for the 1000th time. :) Jen *************************************** "I'm a psychosomatic sister, running around without a leash" - the Phair one (liz that is) You gotta get away, to want to go back home again" - S.S. I thought of calling it The Spaceegg Corner, since I seem to be addicted to the word spaceegg. Great idea on naming the best/worst songs from WCSE. The best song nomination: What Makes You Happy. Worst song: can't think of one! About the whole ordeal with Liz being played in tv shows, I talked to a friend of mine not too long ago about this and she said could easily identify Liz's Baby Got Going from Felicity, and she's not even a fan of hers. She knew it was her cuz I had played some of Liz's songs for her (not BGG). We got into the discussion about Girls' Room for some reason and she asked that I played and she liked it. Me felt good when she said: Wow! I gotta get this cd! Sessions at West 54th, gosh! When is it going to be on?! I just watched Natalie Merchant's not too long ago and liked it a lot. It just makes me way too excited to see Liz's! I mentioned this a few days ago, but I didn't get much response. Is there anyone interested on getting a Liz pen? I contacted the place where I get my posters laminated and the price of each pen is $5.50 and is a roller ball, meaning refillable. I thought of sharing this cuz the set-up price is an arm and a leg and thought it would be cool if a bunch of us got together to help cover the price. Please let me know! Have a spaceeggy day. Katie ():) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 03:41:00 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: December issue of Alternative Press Hey everyone, Just wanted to alert you all to the new issue of Alternative Press, which contains their list of the "90 Greatest Albums of the '90s." Liz is included, of course, for _Exile in Guyville_. They ranked the album at #11, which seems a little low to me (I personally consider _Exile_ to be the best album of the decade), but it's still nice to see Liz get the recognition. Here's their write-up on the album: LIZ PHAIR EXILE IN GUYVILLE People found what they wanted to find in _Exile In Guyville_ -- anthems for the post-feminist '90s; a suburban girl playing bad; an audacious 26-year-old from a Chicago boys-town scene willing to rewrite a Rolling Stones album. I prefer to think of _Guyville_'s creator as an old- fashioned girl who wanted to fall in true-blue love, who would be a blow-job queen, who really wanted "all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas." Either way, there's no way to underestimate the album's importance: It's a quiet, dramatic whisper released in a time when everyone else seemed to be screaming; the album that proved the power of lo-fi bedroom confessionals; the album that articulated post- college, pre-adulthood confusion better than anything else to come from Phair's generation; the album whose critical success led major labels to sign a generation of frank female songwriters. While most of those acts lacked Phair's subtle smarts, Phair proved she's still a singular talent with her latest album, _whitechocolatespaceegg_. Somewhat predictably, the number one album on the list is Nirvana's _Nevermind_, with the second place going to Nine Inch Nails' _The Downward Spiral_. Also in the top 10: Beastie Boys (_Check Your Head_), Smashing Pumpkins (_Siamese Dream_), Beck (_Odelay_), PJ Harvey (_Rid Of Me_), My Bloody Valentine (_Loveless_), Portishead (_Dummy_), The Verve (_Urban Hymns_), and Jane's Addiction (_Ritual De Lo Habitual_). The fact that a Verve album placed higher than Liz rankles me most of all. Not that they're not good, but better than Liz? Come on. Liz did place higher than a lot of other critically-respected artists and bands, such as Radiohead, Hole (who were on the list for _Celebrity Skin_, not _Live Through This_. What gives there?), Pavement (who I am glad were included for _Slanted And Enchanted_, one of my favorite records of all-time), Tori Amos, Sonic Youth, The Breeders, Matthew Sweet, Elastica, and R.E.M. The list does have its flaws, but overall, it's not too bad. Where's Sleater-Kinney, though? Excluding them makes no sense to me. Also in the same issue, there's a full-page ad for Camelot Music, "Gifts from the Cutting Edge." _Whitechocolatespaceegg_ is among the six albums featured. It's great that they're giving the album a push, but I could have lived without seeing Liz's album cover next to one of Korn's. There seems to be something so inherently wrong with that. Or maybe I'm just complaining too much tonight. I've been a little busier than usual lately, so I haven't been posting at all as of late. My next post, however, will be a review of Liz's show in Toronto a couple of weeks ago and will also tell of the incredible good fortune I had meeting Liz earlier that day. It'll be a long post, and I've been working on it for a while. When I met Liz, she allowed me to take some pictures of her. I have the two best ones scanned and posted on my website now and you can find them at the following URLs: http://www.bconnex.net/~jase/lizphair/gallery/liz_toronto_102098_1.jpg http://www.bconnex.net/~jase/lizphair/gallery/liz_toronto_102098_2.jpg If I would have been thinking, I would have had my picture taken with her, but as it was, I was a little overwhelmed. The single greatest, most eventful day of my life -- and that was before the long-awaited concert! More on that later, though... Cheers, Jase NP: Beck, _Mutations_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 04:05:30 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Liz in Seventeen Oops, I lied. My next post after this one will be my review of the so-long-ago Toronto show. I forgot to mention in my last message that there is a one-page article on Liz in the December issue of Seventeen. A co-worker of mine who knows I'm nuts about Liz's music saved the article for me, so here it is: My Phair Lady With a new album and the Lilith Fair under her belt, Liz Phair is an exile no more. by Fiona Gibb After Liz Phair's four-year absence from the music scene, expectations for her new CD, _whitechocolatespaceegg_, were high. Having dazzled both critics and fans with her 1993 debut, _Exile in Guyville_, and its follow- up, _Whip-Smart_, Phair was crowned the indie-rock poster girl. Thanks to her candid (she calls them incredibly raunchy) lyrics about love and sex, this Winnetka, Illinois, native instantly became the angry-yet-accessible rock chick who all the girls wanted to be and all the guys wanted to date. A daunting image to live up to -- and not one Phair, now 31, was sure she still wanted. "It was such an odyssey for me to get off _Whip-Smart_," says the petite Phair, in between bites of salad at the Bongo Room, a trendy Chicago restaurant. "I felt like I hated the music industry, and all the attention. I was miserable. I don't want to sound like I didn't care what people thought, but I had to grow and make music that excited me again. If I still talked about the way I felt when I was twenty-four, I'd be dead inside." The result is Phair's most personal and daring album yet. Although _whitechocolatespaceegg_ is a far cry from her first two CDs (note the lack of references to bad breakups, one-night stands and sleazy guys), Phair says it's her most honest work because this time she had nothing to prove. "When you're angry and you take a stand emotionally, you're really protecting yourself," she explains. "This is more factually revealing about my life." These days Phair is equal parts regular gal and rock star. "It's wickedly intense on tour," she says, "but when I'm home I'm pretty much a mom." She lives a relatively mainstream life in Chicago with her husband, film editor Jim Staskauskas, and their two-year-old son, Nicholas. She drives a sport utility vehicle, is part of a mommy group and has Madonna's _Ray of Light_ in her CD changer. Phair's foray into domesticity hasn't stopped her from expanding her audience, though. This past summer she toured with the Lilith Fair. At first Phair's lo-fi sound struck her as out of sync with the high-powered Sarah-Natalie-Paula fest. "After I got over the insecurity of being like, I'm a bar band next to a bunch of divas, I'm going to get fired; I realized that what I did was different." But different is just fine with Phair right now. Of her new CD and her more mature image, she says, "I feel like an artist again. I'm doing the right thing, and going in the right direction. And I can't explain it any better than that." Alongside of the article, there's a picture of Liz performing that I haven't seen anywhere else before. Her eyes really jump out at you, and it's a fairly close-up shot, kind of angled from the right. Hopefully I'll find some time to scan it soon and put it up on my website. At the beginning of it, she said this is very sensitive matter and she is gonna talk about it because this is only in Japan. Well it was about her brother. As you guys know, the song "only son" was about him. Her brother always had probrems, she said. He's been always a trouble maker in the family. But she said she still love him a lot and didn't expected that everybody who listened to her new CD would try to know about him more and more. I know they're part of the body's cells. > > - -Jeff > I think this question may have been answered correctly in the past, but here we go again: Actually, the shapes are not human body cells, or cells from any other animal or plant. They are in fact the shape of electron orbits around the nucleus of an atom. The one in the upper right hand corner that looks like saturn-with-rings is the most familiar electron orbit shape, the one we all learned about in elementary school science class. But the other patterns are probability shells for electrons at higher energy levels. Since we can't ever really know for sure where an electron is (Heisenberg's uncertainty principle) we define an area where it probably is, and these shapes are those areas. But don't just take my longwinded word for it, check out this website: http://www.tmeg.com/esp/e_orbit/orbit.htm It has pictures of these electron orbits, and at the bottom of the page you'll see all those familiar shapes from the back of the Whipsmart liner. Now the real question: why would Liz put pictures of electron orbits on her album? I like both mainstream authors (Grisham, Clancy), and writers who explore different themes (Henry Rollins, Bret Easton Ellis). I used to watch a lot of TV, now I see it as a HUGE waste of time and only watch new and old episodes of The Simpsons, major sporting events, and a sampling of MTV (Daria, 120 Minutes). I like music from all decades and genres: 50s (Elvis); 60s (Dylan, The Doors); 70s (Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead); 80s (R.E.M., Beastie Boys); 90s (Tool, Pearl Jam, Phish, Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction); Rap (Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest); and countless assorted artists (Bob Marley, Rage Against The Machine, The Smiths, Liz). I ABHOR "easy listening," DESPISE "Country," and LOATH "Top 40." Love good movies (Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption), but don't have time to see/rent all of the best ones. Magazines I subscribe to: Bicyclist, Maxim, Rolling Stone, Newsweek. During the week I am another suit on the subway with a copy of Newsweek on my way to work or school; on weekends I attempt to be a hedonist and have fun exploring our nation's capital. Consumed copious amounts of drugs and hard liquor during college, but have since quit the illegal substances and shots and switched to tamer quantities of German Beer, dry martinis, and bold, deep red Cabernets. As a result of my gradual body cleansing, I have become a health freak who works out religiously and shuns all foods fast. Stopped smoking the night of the Oct. 5 Liz show (and my birthday). I enjoy the nightclub/bar/music scene in DC, but I don't attend nearly as many live shows as I would prefer. I never really liked any female music artists until I got into Liz - and then I loved Liz so much that I hated the other grrrls (sorry) even more. A few bands featuring women have squeaked into my CD collection (Belly, Morcheeba, Hole, Cranberries), but I really can't get into the ever-popular acts that are Tori, Natalie, Sarah, et. al. (BTW, does anyone else think that Alanis' ass is a *little* to big for her to be shooting videos in the buff?) But Liz, the supreme aberration, casts an inexplicable spell - lyrics, guitar, that VOICE (so sultry); she's in a realm above all others. The idea of it being the reversed sequence of events is interesting, but I think Liz is trying to make a point about the emptiness and lack of emotion of one-night stands - and that's symbolized by the 2 would-be lovers in the song agreeing to watch TV during sex. Each of them actually needs (or prefers) to focus their attention on the idiot box, instead of each other. (It's certainly not as simple as the Boston Globe's trite observation that these lines are "advice on the best way to have sex and watch TV"!) This emptiness is her point in the whole song - shown in the discussion of banal topics (playing jacks, Julia Roberts), comparing the gray light to that in paperbacks (throw-away pulp fiction), singing in monotone. And the "timidness" at the end is not a fault. It's a surface excuse, blaming herself for not being "cool" or adventurous, when in fact she's repelled by the emptiness - which is a very self-respecting reaction. Great irony. I've always really loved Chopsticks - it says a lot, very subtly. Hey - speaking of sequence of events, when you take Andy's WCSE lyrical content analysis and put it all together, in one massive stream of consciousness, in the order he gave it, you get: friend love fuck guy baby headache Anyone else get quite a kick out of that? ;^) Just for the record, I'm one Liz phan whom you'll never catch watching Party of Five or Felicity (or Melrose Place or Dawson's Creek or any of those shows). At the risk of boos and hisses, I'd rather watch anything on PBS, TLC, AMC, etc. than sit through any of those shows. Blech. Folks, do yourselves a favor and turn yourselves on to jazz! Take Chuck up on his offer of that fantastic classic jazz sampler tape. Where else can you taste the masters on a try-before-you buy basis? Jazz is truly food for the soul (and the first wholly American music genre). Cures what ails ya! On a related note, if anyone cares, I just returned from Chicago where I saw "The Jazz Age in Paris" exhibit at the Public Library. FANTASTIC! (and free, too!) If you live in Chicago, get over there and see it. Sorry for the length and the copious non-Liz content... thanks for listening!
