I am a recent subscriber to the list, but have been a Liz fan for a long time. I was completely distraught to hear that she was recently in Detroit at Clutch Cargos and I missed her. I actually thought about taking time off classes and driving to Chicago. Me being the only real Liz fan in my immediate circle of friends and being without a car squashed that idea though... on another note, I was wondering if i could get a copy of the Girlysound tapes anywhere. I have heard so much about them and am practically drooling at the thought of more liz, especially stuff before Exille. I also agree with the unreality of college on TV. I actually went and bought socks last week to postpone doing laundry. I bet you'll never see anyone on Felicity doing that! Last year, while living in the dorms here at U of M, I would do my laundry at 4 or 5 in the morning when I got home from work. It was the only time I could find an empty washer and dryer. I've been trying to watch the video channels on TV to get a glimpse of "polyester Bride" but haven't yet. Is there a best time? I agree with Alex that Liz doesn't get much, if any, playing time over here in southern Michigan. I also have mixed feelings about Liz getting so much playing time on pop shows. I kind of like being one of a small band of people who know and love her music. It makes me cringe to think of going to some frat party and hearing her, or going home and having my little sister with one of her cd's. It just isn't the right context. She has to be listened to, enjoyed, and adored. not everyone is capable of doing that. I guess that is all for my first post. I must finish my English paper before tomorrow. I found it on the net and uploaded it to my Liz site. Check it out and tell me why it says the first single off of EIG was Stratford-On-Guy (It was Never Said) I think it has to do with confusing wording: It says featuring Stratford on Guy and the new single Never Said. This could be read as you read it that Stratford on Guy is already a single, and Never Said the new one, but it might just be saying it has the song Stratford on Guy and the newly released single Never Said. It doesn't make much sense if that's so (who would care if it featured stratford if it hadn't been a single?), but I'd blame it on sloppy copy writing at Matador. Or perhaps they changed their mind on what to release first. In other words, I would chalk it up to error--or maybe question the matador guys on the mystery. My friend - who first introduced me to Liz Phair and EIG in 1993 - thinks the line 'that way we can fuck and watch TV' refers to reversing the order - i.e., instead of the usual order of watching TV, getting cozy, and then fucking. Like TV would be post-coital rather than foreplay. I assumed this was LP's meaning until I read an article in The Boston Globe before she came here that made mention of her songs containing such lines as advice on the best way to have sex and watch TV at the same time. (I can't recall the author's exact phrasing.) Of course there could be another song I am not thinking of, but I took that to be a reference to Chopsticks. Hence my confusion. I really DO understand the reference to 'do[ing] it backwards' as possibly meaning doggy-syle. I am not a moron. My point was rather that perhaps there could be an alternative meaning - that she could be referring to doing it in a different order sequentially (TV, snuggle, shag silly). I have always preferred this interpretation b/c it's not as characteristic/standard. Kind of like 'you think I am being really crude when you [the listeners] are the ones with the dirty minds'. I know this isn't really Liz related, but I've noticed a couple of people talk about living in dorms at college and that reminded me of a story or two of my own past. Please bear with me. I never lived in 'rez' (residences) while at the University of Calgary, but two buddies and I shared a house within walking distance of the university. (For those familiar with Calgary, it was on Brecken Rd. NW, a block behind the London Drugs and Safeway at Brentwood Mall). Because we were all in the communications program, we became known as The House Of Rhetoric (THOR), and the doors were never locked! The next morning after one particularly wild Hallowe'en party, we found black finger marks on the ceiling (a tall girl dressed as a pepper shaker was dancing on a table and needed to steady herself), a red smear down a wall (a clown with lipstick on his nose passed out, face forward into the wall and crumpled to the floor), popcorn 2 inches thick on the floor (NEVER feed your guests!), a shopping cart (of course with only 3 wheels), a spare tire, and an enormous amount of red-colored toilet paper (someone thought it was funny to dress as a used tampon). This was in addition to the 14 (!) people who passed out in our basement in various stages of undress. To get a bit of revenge on one particular asshole, we noticed that he had left his car in the alley, and decided to fill it with the leaves we had raked from the yard. Little did we know that he forgot where he parked his car, and after 8 days of hot/cold cycles, the leaves began to heat and decay... the stench was something aweful! The inside of his car wasn't the same after that! I've got lots more, but this is too long already. Thanks for letting me reminisce for a while; like someone said, "Why did I ever leave?" Maybe I need a second degree... _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I saw her yesterday in concert at the Roxy on Sunset in West Hollywood and can now say that I'm a fan. I only went because my friend Laura digs her a lot (she thinks she is hot! not to mention she's a great musician) and she won two tickets from Star 98.7 here in L.A. (she wins everything she enters or whatever, you know the type) and I was her second choice to take and fortunately, her first choice couldn't make it! Woohoo!!! Anyways, she is an awesome performer, Sheryl that is. It was all acoustic and she rocked! We were right up by the stage.! It was real cool! What made my night was when she came back on stage for the encore and the cd cover my friend Laura brought just in case we happened to run into Sheryl, well, I grabbed it from Laura and held it up way high so that Sheryl could see it. I saw her glance over at it in the middle of the song (which I don't remember what song it was) but I wasn't really sure if she saw it or not. People around us were looking at me like "Yeah right" but I was persistent in keeping the cd raised up and reaching out to Sheryl. What was so cool was that as soon as she finished the number she walked right up to me and grabbed the cd and the pen and signed my friend's copy of Globe Sessions. I was in awe and proud of myself. As soon as she did that, more people began handing her what ever they had for her to autograph, but she only responded to two others and than she handed me back the pen and walked off. That was so cool, that she knew who the pen belonged to. My friend Laura and I began high-fiving each other and people around us were saying things like "good job!" It was way cool and she won my heart (not the way Liz has, but nevertheless). I will always remember that. I'm still bitter that I was unable to see Liz at the Mayan. I'm still kickin my ass for that one, because I know she would rock my world Live! Seeing Sheryl so close and personal, made me realize what I missed in seeing Liz Live. Come on Liz, come back to L.A.! That would be the friggin best thing ever and I would be her slave forever if that's what it would take!!!!! Oh well, ya'll are probably wondering what all this means, but I just thought I'd share because I know there are a lot of Crow fans on this list. Right On! ();) I don't know if this sounds exciting or not, but I made a tape and titled it Phairity Soundtracks. It's basically all of Liz's songs from soundtracks and I included Polyester Bride (jukebox, gotta hear those scratchy sounds of those vinyls!), Greased Lightning, Hurricane Cindy. It's only a 30 minute tape and don't mind putting it onto a longer tape and put on other stuff I have of other artists. For Sheryl Crow fans, I can offer a bunch of B-sides or a Howard Stern interview from October 9. Rarities of other people I have: Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Jewel, and Meredith Brooks (found her stuff from the '80s). If interested, email me privately. I'm interested in a trade for anything of Liz or Sheryl Crow and will make a tape if you send me a blank tape. Ohki, still have a lot of copies of the INsite magazine! I thought of sharing the story of how I got so many. Grabbed 15 the first time, went to Best Buy to get other stuff, headed back to Borders (which had this magazine) and got more copies. If that wasn't enough, I went back the next day after school and picked up some more. Ah, the joy of being a die-hard fan! I was there a few days after this and decided to be kind enough to leave it alone and let someone else get a copy of it. Thanks to whoever posted the magazine siting of Liz in the Seventeen magazine! I'm totally against teen magazines and went to get a copy last night and nearly cried at seeing the beautiful picture of her. I showed it to my mom and her response: Wow! Look at those diamond earrings! Um....I feel so sluggish for some reason. I'm gonna have my own Liz page and I don't even want to bother with my other one. Errrg...should I get rid of it or no? Decisions decisions. Oh yeah, does Hurricane Liz sound like a good name for the page? Ohki, one more thing before I go, even though I do have a lot of other stuff to post but don't feel like doing that, it wouldn't be fair to have a digest of just my letter. ("You're so vain") Anyways, back to the show! I was looking into making Liz buttons, bumperstickers and pen at the place where I get my posters laminated and got an estimated price. Well, I thought it would be pointless to go w/ the buttons and bumperstickers. So, the idea is having a Liz pen and I thought of presenting this to everyone cuz the start up cost is like an arm and a leg and maybe if there's enough requests, we could make it cost like nothing. I looked into making the pens refillable (rollarball pen) and the cost of each one is $5.50 and the start up cost is $36. Let me know if it's a good idea and I'll present the idea w/ a more realistic price with the S/H included. Ready to have a mess of fun!
