But one thing that I believe is that it isn't coincidence that the one's coming to the defense of Baby Got Going dislikes Only Son. Baby Got Going isn't an amazing song but it's definitely a fun song at the right place of the album for it. I also love the line 'Like a big Mack truck cutting cross two lanes'' because it fits it perfectly and I don't expect to hear a reference like that in Liz's music. I'm now noticing her earlier reference to truck drivers which is 'when they do the double-clutch, that's them dancing'. Sorry, bad joke. Anyway, back to my point which is that I think Only Son doesn't do much for where it is on the album. I find that that's the song where I notice where I am on the album, it's like hitting a speed bump or something. There has been a lot of criticism of Girl's Room and a couple others on the album but it's interesting that those who are backing Baby Got Going are the one's that find 'Only Son' lacking. Well, I'm finally headed back to America and away from the bastards of AOL UK. You can reach me at gapeterson@yahoo.com but it may take a while because I have to drive from Colorado to New York once I get to America (but I have time to stay for a Broncos game!!!!...followed them all my life and have never gotten to see a game). Fittingly, I really like that song. I love the slow drone of it all; real old-school Liz Phair. We should not forget the mother of all Liz Phair albums: the Girlysound recordings. This lays the blueprint for all to follow. Its the best and I feel should get more recognition. Listen to the original "Fuck and Run" or the haunting "I Know Its Not Easy" and you will know why I prefer "Son" over "Baby". Dig? It allows everyone the opportunity to hear more music than they might never have before. So, if anyone out there was Interested But Unsure about any of the above albums, they might contact me (or whoever has the tapes, in this case, Alex) and have the tapes sent out to you. Some other possibilities: if someone has the Police's Greatest Hits and was wondering which of their other albums they might be interested in, I can help you out there. If someone wants to know where to start with Bob Dylan, I can help you out there. The possibilities are virtually endless with the amount of good taste in music on our beloved Digest here. I, myself, am interested in listening to sampler tapes of the following artists: Ani DiFranco, Frank Zappa, the Throwing Muses, Elliott Smith, Big Star, Ben Lee, Sebadoh, the Fugs, Jeff Buckley, early Cheap Trick, the Wedding Present, Jesus Lizard, Echo & The Bunnymen, Little Feat, et al. I'd also like the opportunity to listen to as many artists who I've never heard of, especially folk artists, various World Music artists and those in the reggae community. So whatta ya say? You'd only have to put on approximately a handful of songs per album to fill up the tape. If we need a "traffic cop" or a "librarian" I'll see what I can do, though I know the possibility of chaos is inevitable. Her stuff is pretty difficult to describe. I suppose "intense" is one word that comes to mind. Chan's music is sort of reminiscent of Girlysounds: although she has a lead guitarist & drums, it's very much focused around her singing and unusual guitar technique & chord combinations. She's a lot more into fingerpicking and less of a rocker than Liz, but her lyrics are similarly obscure and she has an amazing singing voice. PJ (live) Granted the PJ Harvey show at the Vic blew the Liz Phair show I went to (10/26) out of the water. PJ was a better performer (her movements looked raw and pure, as if she was moved solely by the music...Liz, on the other hand, moved deliberatley and seemed very self-concious, as if she had choreographed a routine for a high school talent show), a better vocalist (as demonstrated during the aformentioned spine tingling rendition of "to bring you my love"), and a better musician (she pounded out chords while liz seemed to search for them). However, lyrically liz is just as strong as PJ...if not stronger in that liz is able to come up with profound and moving verses without having to hide as often behind the ambiguity of metaphor. Lyrics, though, are rarely what is memorable about a concert. You can appreciate someone lyrically just as easily in your own living room as you can at a show. Lyrics carry over beautifully on a CD... the energy and improvisational skills and self-confidence of a great performer do not. Liz is not a great performer. This in no way detracts from her music or even her musical abilities. It's just that for my money, I'd rather see someone whose stage performance adds to the brillance of their, not detracts from it. I'm at all disappointed with the Liz Phair show I saw. I'm a huge fan and I've been longing to see her play live for four years or so. However, I don't think anyone not previously familiar with Liz's music would be more turned on to it by seeing her live rather than just listening to exile. I've Third Eye Blind one and a half times, the only band I've ever walked out on. I just saw the opening band (Eve 6), then left about four or five songs into 3EB's set. And the other time was opening for the Stones, so I willfully suffered through for that. >Actually, I'm curious about why the bios mention her father's name, but not her >mother's. Hmmm... Maybe it's because she'd rather not share that information? It is rather personal, as it would then be possible to find out a bunch of stuff. Anyone see Dateline NBC tonight (Fri., Oct. 30)? They had a thing about criminals in jail using Freedom of Information Acts to do all sorts of scary, wacky shit, like find out someone's unlisted address, get payroll information, prison blueprints, stuff about guard's families. One guy changed his name to that of a woman's ex-husband, then got a bunch of private info. on her, and even filed a chang-of-address to get her mail delivered to him. That shit ain't right. Why would Liz want to release information that would only make it easier for people to find out private stuff. Sorry to ramble, but has anyone hear heard about what happened to Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam? Now, Eddie will neither confirm nor deny any of this, but most comes from pretty reliable sources. Apparently, a few years ago, he came home to find a strange woman in his kitchen, making food. At first, he tried to just talk to her to get her to leave, but eventually had to call the police to get her out. Also, there's a pretty strong rumor that someone fired a gun at his house, maybe even through a window trying to hit him or his wife. Now, it's said that he has everybody searched, even the pizza guy. To me, that's frightning. I would do the exact same thing if I were him. And you can just imagine if you're Liz, and you hear that story. Why would you want to give out your parents and siblings names, ages, and professions? Oh, and by the way, if you'd like to read that Dateline story I was talking about, it can be found online at: http://www.msnbc.com/news/205626.asp >That said, I just bought "The Jerk" and I can't think of a better way to have wasted >seven bucks. Where did he mention physical violence?!?! >In the same way, so can attitudes and perceptions of women that reduce or >objectify them for sexual gratification. It has been proven (and thanks to whoever mentioned this the other day, I can't believe I forgot about it!) that most* men are stimulated visually, by sight, through their eyes, while most* women are stimulated by touch and sound (erotic stories, their partner whispering sweet nothings into their ears, the natural sounds of sex). So, yes, women ARE objects for sexual gratification. To most* men, the sight of a womans body is erotic, stimulating. That's why men read Playboy, Penthouse, etc., and watch adult movies. It gets the blood flowing to their penis, and hopefully, we all know what happens from there. If not, e-mail me, and I'll write you a step-by-step. It's harder to gear erotica to most* women, as it's not easy to make a magazine touch or say things to a woman. That's where vibrators and the like come in. The women can have actual physical contact. Now, nothing, for ANY men OR women, can take the place of a live partner. Unfortunently, this world isn't perfect, or we'd all have a partner all the time. Along with this, it's also been shown that most* women are interested in longer, monogamous relationships, and don't really like "one-night stand" type stuff. Most* also are more inclined toward, well, "love" type relationships, where they maybe don't have sex very often, but do stuff with/for their partner to show that they love them. But, most* men don't mind "one-night stand" stuff, as most* don't get as emotionally attached. Most* are inclined to "sex" type relationships, where, obviously, there is a lot of sex, but not much of anything else. THIS is what society and people have to realize "...for us to live in a civilized society." We have to accept the fact that most* men are more visceral, more animalistic, than most* women. It's something that we have to learn how to deal with, because it can't be changed. It's who we are, as human beings. These are not concious choices by most* men to want to look at a naked female form. It's built into them. And THAT'S what Jason Jenks was referring to when he said "I apologize for being male, but if you're a guy you know you can't help it." [original quote] It IS part of being male, for most* guys. I don't make my dick get hard, it does it on it's own. *DISCLAIMER - In the above text, where I have referred to males and females, I am at no time generalizing on the part of ALL of either group. Nor am I distinguishing between different sexual preferences within each group. I mean no offense to anyone, I am just trying to get my point across. My statements do not mean that every male or every female is like that, as I am not myself. I am a male, yet I look more for a long-term, committed relationship, not a "Fuck and Run", if I may make a really bad joke. >This next step is a difficult one for some, The difficult step was the one between "I apologize for being male, but if you're a guy you know you can't help it." and "Yes, physical violence can be helped." You took a part (incorrect, also) of his quote, and twisted it completely out of context. He was talking about a male's reaction to visual stimulation to a naked body. His only problem is that he didn't make it P.C. by saying "but if you're a guy, and you see a picture of whatever object turns you on (assuming anything does. If not, this does not apply to you), be it male, female, animal, or shoe, naked or otherwise, you know you can't help it." He just didn't take into account every possible, uh, setup, for lack of a better term, of being male, and he got jumped on for it. Then it got picked up, torn apart, slapped back together, and blown way out of proportion, to arrive here, where it is hoping to start to die out. I've clipped the rest, as what it deals with has absolutely nothing to do with the original statement. Sorry for the extremely long post, and I apologize in advance for any and all spelling/grammar errors, as it's four in the morning. I'll be happy to clarify anything by e-mail. Thanks, and goodnight. The issue number RS 692. There was some article in the NY Times newspaper on Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998 about The Music of Youth Rebellion Embraces the Family. It was an article about how musicians incorporate parenthood into their songs. Since it was lengthy, I'm only typing what they wrote about Liz. "Parents like Ms. Hersh are changing the scenes in which contemporary music is made and heard, and, just as important, confounding the argument that children must be protected from rock-and-roll's dangerous influence. Others, like Liz Phair and Amy Rigby, are making their mark through their lyrics. "Liz Phair goes in a similar direction on "Whitechocolatespaceegg," especially on the indelible ballad "You Go Ahead, Honey," which plainly and simply elucidates the strain a new baby can put on a relationship. Once underground rock's most famous female sexual adventurer, Ms. Phair has not compromised her franks approach because she has settled down. The most triumphant thing about songs like hers and Ms. Rigby's is that they so blithely cross lines few artists have even approached. Just as classic rock first broached forbidden subjects like sexuality, these women dig into the particulars of domestic experience with a frankness that challenges propriety." Notice how they didn't name the song correctly. *knocking on author's head* Hello?! It's "Go On Ahead!" Sheez! I don't know if anyone noticed that in the Matador catalog, you can send them a SASE for more mail-order info. I sent mine today to see what it's all about. Boo hoo! I see that Florida is still left out on Liz's tour! Atlanta is too far for me. If only she'd drive five hours down south and play in Jacksonville...sigh. I was wondering if the House of Blues would be the type of venue Liz would play at. HOB in Orlando is quite popular and can house about 2000 people. What I like so much about the HOB is there are TVs in the balcony section. Sounds really cool, but I don't think the camera men could keep up with Liz during her dances. But anyways, according to my mom's connections, every popular venues are booked till mid-January. Well with my Liz experience, the evening in FL are really nice and I hardly use the A/C in my car. For everyone who already sent me their address, you should be getting it around this weekend or next week. Have a spaceeggy day. I personally like Baby Got Going. It's got a sense of humor. It also reminds me a lot of "Read My Lips" or "Ruby Red Lips" (whichever title you prefer) off Girlysound tape 2. So the sound isn't a complete departure for her. Also, about the Felicity comment... I based my graduation speech on "Go West," so I too feel dirty. Allow me to bitch for a moment about this boil of a television show. I am in college. One night, for kicks, several friends and I watched this show to see just how realistic it was(n't). Let's kick out some major points: 1. An empty laundry room. The only time my laundry room is empty is at four am on a weekday, or on spring break when only three people are left on campus. 2. Two girls dressed normally in the laundry room. In college, the only time to do laundry is when yr out of other clothes. So you wear anything you have that doesn't smell. Most girls in my building wear sweats and flip-flops. 3. A college guy takes Felicity to a really nice restaurant for a date. YEAH RIGHT! Can you say Denny's (or Eat'n Park, or Perkins, or Bickford's, depending on where you live). Can you say pay for yrself. Can you say, "let's meet for lunch and I'll feed you off my meal plan". 4. We stopped watching at this point. Maybe my friends and I are freaks, but that show is nothing like college life for anyone we know. We are all piss-broke and in debt all the time, but we keep spending. We splurge on real food. We drink too much (coffee and alcohol) and several of us smoke too much. We all procrastinate, and we certainly don't record our thoughts in a little tape recorder. We bitch to each other, or our home friends, or our parents, or random people we only know through a mailing list;) Thanks for reading (if that's what you did) and humoring my digression. - -Tiff "If I ever pay you back, if my money and wallet's in tact, I'll probably be in a box lying down, loosely suited in black..." -Liz Phair "Little girl keeps growing up, playing makeup, wearing guitar..." -Paul Westerberg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 18:00:25 -0330 From: Jillian Fry Subject: Much spotlight > Another question, why, on Liz's Muchmusic Spotlight, weren't the videos > for Never Said and Jealousy played??? Since everyone seems to want to turn this into an r.e.m. thing, i must interject this humble opinion (MY opinion and only that): Their best material is contained on the albums from MURMUR through FABLES. Period. PAGEANT, GREEN, AUTOMATIC and HI-FI are great albums, but the first three lp's are the ones containing the initial elements of the band that made them so cool, different and influential. By the time PAGEANT rolled around (1986), they had already made it as songwriters and no longer relied on feeling things out, as they had on, say, "9-9," "Sitting Still," or "Time After Time." PAGEANT is a great rock album but compared to the others is a good r.e.m. album. AUTOMATIC has some incredible work, though I, for one, can barely stomach a few of the tracks, whereas I can listen to the 83-85 stuff for an eternity without complaint. While they've thus far avoided the Aerosmith syndrome, we've got to face the fact they're rich rock stars now (the very thing they claimed to despise in the IRS years). That's my $.02 on a non-topic. I caught Liz at the 10-26 Vic show and thought it was great. We're hoping to catch another midwest/eastern seaborad show on this tour, but none of the listed ones are near enough to NW Ohio for us. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 21:14:10 PST From: "Scott DeKatch" Subject: WHO'S SITE IS IT ANYWAY???
