Well..it's clear we all have different tastes, so I'm not about to give the whole "yer fucked for thinking that" line. However, I know I'm not in denial in saying that i really dig the song "Baby Got Going". I will admit, it is not my favorite track on the album...but I really like it...it is funny, short and kinda geeky cute in the rocking music..the whole organ (?) or whatever instrument used in the song makes me chuckle, especially at the end..and the line: "a real good shakin' is all it took...and my baby's hooked on me and as you can see, I'm wild about her." I really like that line...Even though I am too far won over and emotionally amazed and attatched to EXILE IN GUYVILLE to ever say WCSE is her best album, I must say there really isn't a track on WCSE that I dislike at all...although I am still not too hot on "GIRL's ROOM", but I can see the charm in the song..nice and simple...but...I do have a tendency to tune out or turn off when the final track comes by... white chocolate space egging, Dan. **************************************************** "Crash and burn, all the stars explode tonight." -Hole. **************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Nov 98 10:35:55 -0500 From: dbickin@ibm.net Subject: Re: Live Broadcast >From: Syrup@concentric.net >Subject: Re: live broadcast >yep, I was wondering the same thing as well. since they seem to be >using realaudio files, I think you can save the clip if you have >realaudio plus. can someone else confirm? dunno how you would convert >from realaudio to other formats though. >- -drew >> >> If the show is broadcast live, how would one tape it? I plopped down the money for RealAudioPlus to save the Morning Becomes Eclectic clip, but no go. They didn't allow you to save the material, and the record button was disabled. If the sound card has an audio out plug, you can hook that into the stereo. But since computer and stereo are on opposite ends of the room, I haven't given that a try. I thought it was totally cool, at least these last two paragraph's of the story. To read the whole article you can go here: http://www.lamag.com/cover.htm   From L.A. Magazine, issue Nov/98 She shrugs off her doubts on the way to the hotel's parking lot, slipping on a pair of shades and laughing about how her younger brother's friends invariably come up with the truest, most cogent movie reviews. "They say, 'That one part didn't make any sense because that dude already told you about that,'" she says. "And usually, they're totally right. I think that stoner dropouts should be writing reviews because they're the most accurate."       When she gets to the lot, the valets have already retrieved her black Mercedes 320E, which sports enough dents and scrapes to suggest that there might be some truth to the stories of her lack of prowess behind the wheel. She climbs in, then rolls down the window and offers a review of her own, recommending Liz Phair's new album Whitechocolatespacegg as she pops it into the car's sound system. Then she pulls away and heads toward Sunset Boulevard--a star, interrupted, on her way back to work. A skateboard might be a livelier way to travel, but when you've got places to go, sometimes you just have to opt for the grown-up wheels. la Cool, no? Right On! I try to be a nice guy and look what happens......I already have a plane ticket to visit my brother in San Diego when Liz is coming to my town, Dallas. My brother is having knee surgery and he needs someone to hang out with him and get him movies and dinner. But at the cost of missing Liz? I saw her for 30 minutes at Lillith Fair but that was like getting to eat only one bite of steak. On top of that, my blood is boiling after seeing a steamy Liz on 120 Minutes. I'm looking at cheap fares and trips to Atlanta or New Orleans. Who is going to those shows and can you tell me how to get tickets? Does anyone know if there's going to be a third leg of the Liz tour? I noticed she hasn't hit Phoenix, New Mexico, Miami, Cincinnati, Las Vegas. I just thought I'd toss in my opinions about a few of the comments made in the last digest. Regarding "Baby Got Going," I like this song quite a bit. I know it's not old-school Liz, but it makes me wanna boogie anyway. :) "Only Son" is my least-favorite song on WCSE. I only kinda like the "So goodbye, so long, I'm gone already, I'm runnin' out of time..." part. It just seems draggy or something. One of the things I love about WCSE is that it has a totally different feel than Exile or WS, which also have different feels that each other, not to mention Girlysounds or Phairities. I think that some people see this as a fault, but I love being able to listen to the products of Liz's evolution for whatever mood I'm in. I just love Liz. I only wish my roommates shared my appreciation so I could play her loud and sing along more often! ~Emily ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 03 Nov 1998 14:10:38 -0500 From: Melissa Leigh Subject: baby got GOING For the first week it was my favorite song on the album. I think it's neat the way Liz is singing from a man's perspective (not like the woman thinking as a man, but singing as a woman way) and plays on that whole "women get horny on train rides" nonsense. It's also a different direction from the rest of the album, which is pretty "studio-ified" (ie What Makes You Happy). It's pretty close to rocking country without the whiny vocals. I'm not saying it's a piece with deep artistical value, but it rocks. I really hope this "Up" album is as good as everyone says it is, because I think the last two have been relative stinkers. Monster, for me, had one good song in "Star 69" and a whole lot of sludge. Hi-Fi, for me, had three good songs in "Departure," "Be Mine" and "Electrolite," but the rest didn't do it for me. I can't yet comment on "Up," but it seemed to me that REM's lacked imagination in their songs the last couple of albums. They seem to keep repeating themselves. Even they said as much some time back when they said that they really only had four songs and that they keep recycling them (not sure how far back that comment went). "Bang And Blame" sounds oddly reminiscent of "Losing My Religion," and even "Electrolite" sounds like a sped up version of my favorite song, "Nightswimming." As far as Scott Litt's contribution of "Baby Got Going," I look at it in a couple of ways. First of all, I love the song because of Liz's vocal performance and for the harmonica. For me, it rocks. But perhaps an "Exile" snare sound (or even a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion snare sound) might have made it a "more-authentic sounding blues." So, perhaps you might give it another listen. I'm surprised at how many people have come out against the "Only Son" song. I think it's a rather odd occurrence that only one song in her canon of fifty or eighty or however many songs she has written has caused so much outcry. I admit, it's a departure, but hey... ...so what's it's problem? a) can't relate to the lyrical content b) music is too slow / late pick-me-up comes a little too late c) too dark a subject (?) d) lyrics seem trite e) other (or rather, "cause it just sucks, that's why") I like the song, myself. I think it might have done better as the last track on the album, but my guess is Liz wanted "Girls Room" last to make a statement that she had finally made it out of Guyville... The roughness and freshness of this album shows why R.E.M. went on to do the things they have done during the last two decades. Okay, that's enough off-subject material. To make this worthy of a Phair-post, let me just say that Liz Phair rocks and I hope she decides to reschedule the Columbus, OH, show. Thank you and good-night. Liz was on the cover of the August Pulse (Tower Records). I think I've mentioned this before - Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth as the interviewer, and Liz mentioning Getting Jiggy.... anyway, Kim recommended Cat Power to Liz. And then in the October "Request" (Musicland) there was a Liz interview (Sex and the Married Girl) and also a piece on Cat Power's new album. I'm starting to want to see what this Cat's all about... By the way - Liz hadn't heard of her either - and they're on the same label - so don't worry about it. It's weird to see how being label-mates means nothing - did you notice that on 120 min she said she loved Jon Spencer b. e. but had never met them and the dude was surprised - "aren't you on the same label?" blah blah Babyface - about Johnny and his headache - you were reading my mind, but you twisted what you found there.... no, this is what I mean - 2 days before I saw your post, I was thinking of starting a "recurring motifs" string, but not with the intent to construct a hodge-podge parody - I can't decide if I like the idea... but yeah - there are definitely recurring motifs - I keep wondering why I don't notice them more easily since I'm so into literary analysis. Here's some 1. the egg - it's her main motif now, symbolizing being ready for new life, birth, and whatever else (hors d'ouvres in monaco?) but it's older than wcse - "you tossed the egg up and I found my hands in place" (mes.-eig), uh.... "they egg me on" (help me mary-eig....JUST KIDDING) 2. money - "all the money in the world is not enough" (6'1''-eig), (Wild Thing - girlysound) (Money-girlysound), (Shitloads-eig) 3. Athena - "he sprung from the skull of Athena" (Soap Star Joe-eig) "Zeus & (in?) Athens, Florida driveways..." (Big Tall Man-wcse) 4. yeah, you're right about headaches - "think about your own head and the headache..." (Soap Star Joe-eig) Headache - wcse "Louis says he's got a headache" Money/Shitloads... 5. dogs (& cats depending on how you hear it: ) "I want to fuck you like a dog" (flower-eig) Dogs of LA-whipsmart "you killed the cat" (johnny sunshine-eig) now is there a second cat? in Never Said - does she say "don't even know what about - or didn't let the cat out?" I could swear that in the Boston concert broadcast from last month - she said cat. if not, uh... cat power is a good cop, ha ha 6. marraige theme - first in Exile to symbolize a relationship - now in WCSE it's literal, except she doesn't mention marraige nearly as explicitly as when it was symoblic This is just the beginning - I'll repost my list when complete. I must admit that right now, I STILL don't have the lyrics down - I'm probably still mishearing - but I'm gonna print out EIG and study all my sheets diligently. The song "Baby Got Going" has to be the worst song ever recorded by Liz Phair. (my humble opinion)." I certainly hope you are alone in thinking this. "Baby Got Going" is one of the best cuts on WCSE. Musically speaking, it's certainly not a typical Liz Phair song (due to the influence of Scott Litt, no doubt) but the "worst song" she ever recorded? No way, Jose. It's a fun, kinda-bluesy, kinda-folksie, "train" song. The music may be all Scott Litt, but the metaphors are all Liz Phair. Lyrically speaking, it's got Liz Phair all over it. It's kind of like "Headache" which has that dorky little bass line to it. Not your typical Liz Phair fare (sorry), but fun to listen to nonetheless. Neither song really ranks up there as the best she's ever recorded (today let's call that one "May Queen". Tomorrow, perhaps, "Mesmerizing") but certainly neither song is the worst she's ever recorded (that one's gotta be "Only Son". Just can't get myself to sit through it.) That's just my opinion, so of course it's right. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 21:29:37 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Dorion Subject: felicity Once again, Liz's loomed in that cultural phenomenom we call "Felicity".
