It was so thrilling!! They played almost the *whole* song! Then, at the end of the show, they had a picture of the WCSE CD and said that "this program featured music by Liz Phair" blah blah blah. Anyways, I don't know if that's already been posted... Also, does anyone have a recording of the Roseland show? I would *love one.* To everyone who I promised tapes to (you know who you are), I am terribly sorry that it's taken me so long. I *just* got my paycheck and bought a few blank tapes. So I will get to making them ASAP. Thanks for being so patient!! That would be a great way to introduce people to some new music. Or, of course, let them know what they never want to listen to again. I know that I, at least, do not buy albums based on hearing one song on the radio, and I've seen a few people on the list saty the same thing. Now, I know that I'm missing out on some really good music, but there is just too much pure shit out there. Out of my nearly 300 CD's, I'd say that, other than albums by artists I already like, probably only about 10 of those CD's I bought without hearing more than one or two songs. And I was dissapointed with probably eight of those. I just have to hear most of an album before I will buy it. In fact, that is the exact reason why I didn't get into Liz until WCSE. I'd just never heard any of her music. And now matter how much I heard people rave about how good she was, I wasn't going to buy anything until I heard her music myself. And, luckily, when I walked in to my local book/music store recently, they had WCSE on one of their listening stations. I knew I'd be buying the album after I listened to about the first four songs. Anyway, I think that would be pretty neat to make compilation tapes, with like five or six songs each from a couple selected artists on them, and them mail them around. Maybe even do like this card thing, and send the tape on to another person when each person is done evaluating it. We could have a list with a few different tapes on it, and you could sign up to "check out" a tape based on the artists. Then if you like them, you can go out and buy a full album. One more thing. If this does happen, I think the best way to make a tape would be to choose a few songs in a row from an album, not skipping around and making a "greatest hits" type thing, even if it means one or two weaker songs, so people have a real chance to make up their minds. Also, one person's "greatest hits" might be another persons crap. Sorry to ramble so long about this, I just think it is an amazing idea, and could be a lot of fun. Also, I've really been wanting to hear some Mudhoney lately. >Alex is obviously one cool Mofo who understands what's up. I thank you, >too, for your insight. And I thank you, for calling me a Mofo! Yes, I liked it at first, but now I really think that this is her best disc. Not slighting Exile, but Good GOD!!! Top to bottom, its her best. Perfect World is an absolute genius-stroke. There's so much variety in the disc from WCSE to Headache to Perfect World to Baby Got Going to Only Son. Its really a TREMENDOUS disc. And it shows her growth as a writer that she doesn't have to be as frank anymore and can still get to you emotionally. And if anyone cares, Automatic IS REM's best disc. Take Everybody Hurts -- the disc's biggest song along with Man on the Moon -- away and the disc is still a masterwork. From Michael's rantings on Ignoreland to the sheer beauty of Nightswimming and Find the River -- the greatest last two songs ever on an album, in my distinctly biased opinion -- to the heartwrenching Try Not to Breathe, its everything an album should be. In my opinion, its the best disc of the 90s -- which of course, will probably get me lynched on this digest. Not the most influential -- see Nevermind or Guvyille. Not the most popular -- maybe Achtung Baby or Jagged Little Pill. Just the best -- Guyville and WCSE are in the top 10, along with Pearl Jam's Vs., Wilco's Being There, Nevermind and a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head. That's it. Contrary to something else someone said, Liz *did* fantasize about her biological parents, imagining that at her 21st birthday, Dr. and Mrs. Phair would sit her down at the breakfast table and tell her that she was secretly from a royal family, and all the baseball and piano lessons were to prepare her for taking over a country somewhere. She says that if it weren't for Nancy and John, she'd probably be in a trailer park somewhere (KCRW, MBE, circa 1994). Also, she may not *try* to find her biological parents, but that's because she has no leads (which is due to CT state laws regarding adoption). I didn't realize that PJ Harvey was the kind of chick who'd take requests from the audience... and yeah, it'd be awesome if Liz would spontaneously play "Carnivore" per request sometime, but oh well. Her show is still not as bad as a previous reviewer stated, but yeah, it does have a downside. The thing is, Liz is just trying a different kind of performing -- she went from Brad, Casey, and Leroy (when they weren't really a "band" and didn't play all that well together live, although "Mesmerizing" from the Fuck and Run boot would suggest otherwise -- go, Casey) to playing by herself (not much variation on sound song to song, but still, she was free to play stuff like "Slave" and "Wasted" and, say, 10 more songs than she plays now), and now to playing with a great band (IMHO) with great credentials and a much more varied sound (anyone else notice how sinister the instrumentation for "Flower" sounds this time? yikes. I love it). I wasn't too thrilled w/ how Liz loses her guitar on certain songs, either (esp. "Mesmerizing" -- what's the point?!), as there's NO need for Liz to pretend to be a chanteuse. On the upside, I've been unexpectedly fortunate seeing Liz live, being in the front row both times, and even right at her feet for the Toronto show. I've gotten the "goat" from Liz twice now, and got her to autograph a sign I had (thanks again, D. Perry) in Philly and *read* my sign in Toronto, acknowledging me in the middle of her show. I've noticed that Liz, for those of you who haven't met her at all yet, is totally a normal person, just like you and me, and totally approachable - -- even when she's "working on 5 hours of sleep here, guys" and would rather go somewhere and rest. The only thing that separates her from us is the fact that she's been on magazine covers and television (yeah, so some of you may have been, too, but disregard that, because I'm trying to make a point). So yeah, Liz is very cool, and seeing her live is a great way to get to know her, so to speak. You get the sense that it's still 1993 and she's still desperately trying to make people think she's cool, like she's *still* the person she was when she wrote "Mesmerizing." So there you go, Liz isn't the greatest performer, but she is the greatest songwriter out there, to me, and I still think she's the coolest rocker alive, no matter what PJ Harvey does in concert. [Sorry this is so long -- I originally just meant to add some info about Liz's family, but... I think I took the wrong exit somewhere, you know.] I'm having a very hard time believing that Casey Rice showed up in the slides. Yeah, maybe that was his dog, but the pictures of Liz and Brad and another guy led me to believe that it was Nash Kato or some other Chicagoan, because otherwise Casey had some plastic surgery done or something -- I don't remember him looking like that. Anyone else have any input? Also, to the person who said that the Rainbo photo booth shots, et al were kind of like snapshots from an era in Chicago that's gone: Is that a bad thing? It sounds so sad... does anyone else miss those days, or is it a good thing that they're gone? I'm not from Chicago, but... I care. That scene sounds kind of cool, back then. And yeah, I also dig the photos of Liz with the fish, and I agree that they were probably inserted to show that there are many facets to her personality, and that, as I said, she's a normal person, just like you and me. She goes fishing. I got "Greased Lightning" last week, and while I can see why it didn't make the album, I think it rules. Who says Liz doesn't sing LOW anymore? So she stopped smoking pot and can hit all the high notes she couldn't before, but so what. One listen to Liz's sexy, sexy low voice on "Lightning" and I could swear that it really is 1993 all over again (but what do I know?). BH, first you complained that Liz's guitarist was overexcited, but then you said that the bass player was completely boring to watch.... How would they have satisfied you? It almost seemed like you were trying to find things to not like about it! Everyone's a critic, and I guess you must have more musical experience than I do so you can say stuff like that, but I saw Liz in NYC and I was completely satisfied with all aspects of the show. But hey, that's just me. Anyway, I guess it was just surprising to see a non- supportive Liz post on this list. But it is a discussion list, right? I guess it just startled my Liz-lovin' sensibilities. By the way, now I really wanna see PJ Harvey because I love her new album.
