You had me ROFLMAO with these! well, what's funnier, is I STILL hear them that way. even though i KNOW they aren't right and they don't make any sense. especially "he's got a family who does hair and you're on the edge of your chair". haha, im glad it gave you a good laugh, they really are silly :) as for Third eye Blind. they played in ann arbor tonight. i didnt go. the lead singer really bugs me. I mean, he can NOT sing. i dont care what anyone says, i have not heard such a terrible voice before. also, i find it quite humorous how he occasionally "wears" a guitar in the videos and during live tv performances, but rarely plays it. yet he gets all the attention because he's pretty. Its called MatchBox20 Syndrome. And that is probably why someone would group them together:) as for Poe...SHE ROCKS! ok, so she isnt some supertalented musical extraordinaire, but she has a sexy rockin voice, kickass lyrics, and is loads of fun...the most fun musical artist out there, in my opinion! Her album "hello" is one of the best sing-a-long albums i own. i have such fond memories from when i used to live at home...going to pick up my little sister from elementary school and driving home with that tape in the stereo, chanting together "HEY man dontcha know you're chokin' the cherry?!" and, her favorite, "trigger happy jack you're gonna blow, but im gonna get off before you go". of course, my sis had no clue what she was singing, she just liked it;) haha i was such a good influence on her:) uh oh im getting all misty, sorry for the random nostalgic crap. haha and about Hole's new album....when i first got it, it grossed me out and i only listened to a few songs...the songs that sounded like their other stuff i guess (celeb skin, playing your song, petals). silly ole me:). now i think it is fair to say that i have never become so addicted to a cd that i originally didnt like before...there is just something about it, i dont know what it is. i CANT get it out of my stereo!!! courtney's voice flows so beautifully with the music...dont get me wrong, i love her raspy screaming, but this stuff is good too. "Heaven Tonight" is just one of those songs that i can play and play and never get sick of. it is so beautiful...i love the guitars in that song. ANd the "baby i've gone away" part of "boys on the radio" gets me everytime. oh mygosh, and Reasons To be beautiful. need i say more. its a great cd. like i said, it cant take it out of my cd player!! i really should get with the times and get a 5 cd changer or something:) ok, enough freaking about hole:) madonna's new album is kinda having the same affect on me...the one song...i dont know the name...the "travelling down this road, watchin the signs as i go" one. that song is such an experience for me for some reason! and to Dan, your post almost had me in tears! i'm so terribly sorry about what happened to you!!!! i can sorta empathize a bit, because i always get fucked when i go to an Important Concert (car accidents, tickets, stoopit cops who are on power trips, etc) and my friends (especially one of the newbies on this list) always make fun (meanie! hehe) of me because its pretty much inevitable that something bad will happen to me anytime i try to get to a show. But i shouldnt complain because i've never gotten physically hurt. im so sorry you had to go through that! :( and i second the petition to have Liz play in Dan's hospital room. :) whoa, i can't believe i wrote so much. sorry to bore everyone! :) steve "Give me religion...and a lobotomy" --tori amos *beulah land* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 01:42:37 -0500 (EST) From: The New Zero Subject: oh goodie two digests in one night!:) hey again, just when i thought i could shut up...another digest arrives:) alex said: >Has anyone else noticed that there is a fairly high percentage of gay or >bi people on this list? Any opinions as to why Liz's music might >appeal to gay people? haha i totally noticed that almost every guy who has written in the past couple digests is either gay or bi. here's my take on it. You gotta be pretty open-minded if you're into liz phair. especially if you're a guy and into liz phair. i mean, lets face it, there are still lots of guys who have problems dealing with feminism. Example: Does everyone remember that shirt that was around a few years ago? i dont remember what it said exactly...but something like "FUCK Liz Phair....I DID!!!" shit, i think i lost my point. oh, ok. gay/bi people usually have very open minds. so i think there's a correlation there. of course, im not saying that straight guys cant have open minds or be into liz. im sure theres lots on this list who do. im tired and i hope that all came out ok, if i offended anyone im sorry. steve "Give me religion...and a lobotomy" --tori amos *beulah land* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 07:31:34 EST From: Gabepet@aol.com Subject: Re: liz in concert--her first tour I saw her on her first tour. I had heard that she suffered from stage-fright big time. She sung everything perfect that I could tell and no major mistakes on guitar but she wasn't quite 'on'. If it wasn't for hearing about it beforehand, I wouldn't have known that she was nervous until we were cheering for an encore (this was in Montreal) and she came back on and sheepishly said that her manager had told her that nobody would know about her in Canada so they played straight through the encore list. I asked this earlier but didn't get a response. When I saw her, she had her guitar plugged into a Gorilla amp that had a microphone in front which led to the regular amps for a lo-fi sound (a la Cheap Trick). Does she still do this? They sent me their catalog along with a Liz Phair sticker. I think I'll just keep it in the jewel case of WCSE for now. I only have one and I guess I want to keep it as a collector's item. So glad to hear that Liz is coming to The Roxy in Atlanta (4 hours from Charlotte) on 11/15 and the Ritz in Chapel Hill (2 ½-3 hours from Charlotte). I've never been to either of those clubs but I guess I can get their numbers from www.yellowpages.com. Is there anyone else on the list thinking of going to those shows? Anybody else from Charlotte, NC? Feel free to email me. Heather Coleman wrote: <<>> I don't know why you are suggesting my comments could be extended to rape. Anything can be extended to something if you want to try and warp its meaning. Physical violence is something someone can help. The simple fact is that I wanted to know if anyone had a photo of the supposed revealing slides of Liz. Guys are typically more visual in terms of sexual attraction from what I've read (not that it's a hard fast rule or anything) than girls and that's what I meant by not being to help it if you're a guy. Yes, I was talking from a heterosexual point of view. I've apologized for not taking every sexual preference into account, but I think some of us can be a bit too sensitive in these highly politically correct times we live in. For example, a lot of people could easily be offended at "Johnny Feelgood" because it suggests that this woman in the song enjoys being physically abused and perhaps sends the message that it's OK if she likes it. I don't think that's what Liz is saying at all. I find it to be more of a character study and rationalization on the girl's part, but I do think Liz is pushing buttons and the envelope so to speak with that song. My point is that my statement is being grossly misinterpreted and to try to stretch it as a justification for rape is not only absurd but dangerously irresponsible. However, let me say I was a bit confused as to what your overall point was and if I'm misinterpreting you, please let me know. Having my comments associated with rape makes me a bit defensive. No one on the list will ever want to meet me at show now. :-) I'd like to thank Alex Miller who wrote: <<>> That pretty much sums it up for me. I'm not trying to stir up shit or offend anyone. What I want is the original 2-album Girly Sound songs, but on CD! Someone must have put them on disc by now. I don't know about you, but I don't even own a cassette player anymore, not even in my car. Plus, tape copies degrade with each play and copy you make. So PLEASE, does anyone have these songs on a CD or a couple of CD's? I would be willing to burn a few copies for anyone who gets me them, or I would simply put up some cash. Thanks. P.S. Mike, if you at looked at the byline for the review you would have seen that it was published in the Chicago Tribune, a newspaper with a daily readership of 1.7 million people. That's hardly an "urban indie/mainstreet pickup paper". I can understand that you might be miffed at the reviewer who did not know Liz had been proclaimed a "rock star" by Rolling Stone, but Maureen Ryan, who wrote the review, is the Editor for the Chicago Tribune Arts Watch. She didn't just wander in off the street. I thought the review was extremely well written and showed knowledge of Liz's music. But yah, you're right, she didn't know Liz was a rock star until now. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 13:32:46 -0800 (PST) From: Suzanne Walsh Subject: AAAaahhh!!! Is anyone else going to be there? Actually, I could use some advice. It's been a long, long time since I've been any farther east than The Ballpark at Arlington & I don't really know my way around Dallas very well. If anyone out there can advise me (by e-mail) on the best way to get to Deep Ellum, where to park, where to eat, etc., I would greatly appreciate it. 2. Profile of a Liz Phair Phan: Male. Age 33. BA in English, minor in Math. Straight. Married. White. No Children. 2 Cats (Bob & Eeyore. Better than children). I've been a mild LP phan since Exile in Guyville but I didn't become an absolute phanatic until WCSE; it is the first album in a very long time that I've had the urge to listen to over and over and over again, which I did constantly for the first week after I bought it. I've since rediscovered her other music and have become a stark raving Liz Phair lunatic. Currently, Juvenilia is in heavy rotation in the Human Cannonball Household. Other musical interests: Butthole Surfers, Smashing Pumpkins, P-Funk, Sonic Youth, Bowie, Zappa, pj Harvey, Minutemen, Talking Heads, Beck, hundreds of others. 3. The best line in a Liz phair song: "I woke up alarmed." (the first line from "Fuck & Run", as if you didn't know). No other song has ever had a more perfect first line. 4.. WARNING: Non-Liz Phair content. The L.A. Times readers' poll (support system #57) was interesting. I wonder if I'm the only one who was surprised that REM's only album on the list was "Automatic for the People"? Bleah.
