The list was predictably dominated by The Beatles, The Stones and other classic rock canonites (Zeppelin, David Bowie, Velvet Underground, etc.) I was glad to see Joni Mitchell ("Court and Spark" weighed in at 30 and "Blue" at 45) made the list, which tapped heavily into white male rock bands, past and present. But what does EIG's inclusion on this one list of gazillion lists mean anyway? It means there may be hope yet for the radio-drone atmosphere in southern California. She does admit to directing most of them, which explains some of it. But I don't think it's the concepts so much as the production--camera work, editing etc. That i'd assign to Matador's apparently low support (5,000 Liz claimed for stratford on 120 mins). It's hard to compete with the million dollar videos with that sort of money in terms of look and slick design. Besides it makes me feel much better to assign blame to stingy record execs than lovely Liz anyday. Al ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 10:56:30 -0600 From: "Allison Nack" Subject: Chicago Show Oct 25 I met up with a list member (hi Jen) and her friend and we got to the Vic early enough to find a place to stand at the very front, right of center. The pre-show experience was marred only by the overly long though enjoyable slide slow, and the presence of a drunk psychotic girl who kept trying to shove her way to the front by saying she was Liz's sister and part of the act. She and I actually got into a little verbal confrontation when I told her Liz does not have a sister. The show itself was wonderful, very similar to descriptions that others have posted. I did notice that there was a set list change minutes before the show started, but I was not able to figure out what the changes were. Liz looked adorable, she was wearing a sleeveless teal green mini dress with high heeled black leather boots. Sort of a sixties look. Lots of makeup. She said she had been to many places recently but it was "so good to be home." She did alot of moving around, mostly a sort of stretching thing and very choreographed arm and hand movements to go with the song lyrics. She did not talk to the crowd a great deal, but at one point she admonished us to "lighten up people!" because she wasn't getting a big response to her banter and people were not dancing that much. The crowd was actually behaving very respectfully, not yelling out stupid things. I thought the show was technically very good, but Liz screwed up "Big Tall Man" by going into the "winning spinning" at the wrong moment and then saying "oh shit, big fuck up" before recovering nicely. Some of the songs suffered live, especially "Mesmerizing" (but this could be because it is my favorite song and I like it to be the way I like it!). The song that I thought sounded the best live was, surprisingly "Uncle Alvarez." I say surprisingly because that song seems very complex to me, and I thought it would be hard to pull off. Her encore of "Fuck and Run" was preceded by an announcement by Liz that "this isn't just for you guys -- this is a fun song." We thought it was weird that she did not introduce anyone in her band, although they seem to get along well and are tight musically. Overall, great show, loved being so close to the stage, my ears are still ringing. I am interested in hearing others impressions of this show as well. The Chicago Tribune usually does a detailed review of her performances, and I will try to post that if I can. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 12:58:10 -0500 From: "Jenks, Jason" Subject: Characteristics of a Liz fan and Liz being hot! In response to Leslie's search for Liz characteristics, I think the defining aspect for me is how well I empathize with Liz's lyrics. I strongly relate to songs like "Fuck and Run" (as the male put in the girl's shoes), "Help me Mary", and "Go West". Now that I'm older and in an ongoing relationship, I still find myself empathizing with "Love is nothing" and "Go on Ahead." As I grow Liz Phair continues to put everything I feel or go through into perspective and makes it tangible for me. She's writing about her personal experiences but they apply to so many people. That's why she is my favorite songwriter. I'm not sure if similar experiences equal characteristics. I think the range of Liz Phair fans is wide so it's difficult to pinpoint to just a few common characteristics. Leslie wrote: <<>> Some people are so attractive that they demand attention. For me, Liz is the type of person I can't stop looking at. A gay friend of mine has a theory that people are a certain percentage heterosexual and a certain percentage homosexual, which could apply here. It's not strange find both genders attractive but still have one preference. When I posted my comments regarding my longings for Liz, I initially apologized fearing that I'd come off as tactful as a construction worker, who publicly leers and pants at women. I try to do that only in private. I was afraid of offending women so I prefaced it by saying, "if you're a guy you can't help it." However, I did not take into account every sexual preference when as jtconnolly(thanks for understanding) put it so aptly that I was writing off the top of my head. I forgot to cover the whole gambit of possibilities (i.e. pedophilia, bestiality, guys who are straight but aren't attracted to Liz, etc.) I don't think a political correctness debate is necessary here. Some of us have different levels of sensitivity and perhaps in my case, insensitivity. The Lockheed-Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon is (and has been, since around 1979 or so) one of the world's best multirole fighters in operation today. If memory serves me correctly, since its introduction into service, the F-16 has never been defeated in air-to-air engagements. AIr forces all over the world use the thing, including most of NATO's smaller countries, the Israelis, the USAF & USN, and other nations throughout the Middle East and the Pacific Rim/Asia . We used them in Desert Storm for all kinds of tasks; we use them in the Serbian thing, (USAF Captain Scott O'Grady was flying one when shot down by a SAM), and in various little deployments in the Middle East. Why is it wicked? Because this thing is absolute bad news in a dogfight. It's small, (therefore hard to see), it's capable of all-weather combat, it carries considerable amounts of both air-to-air and air-to-ground ordnance, and it's inexpensive to buy. You've probably seen them; the USAF's Thunderbirds fly the F-16 at airshows. It starred in "Iron Eagle", from 1986 with Jason Gedrick and Louis Gossett, Jr. http://www.af.mil./news/factsheets/F_16_Fighting_Falcon.html is the USAF's blurb on it; if anyone cares for more info, just ask. I stood next to a bunch of stiffs who didnt dance or sing to more than 3 songs. However, I sang every word and danced until I was out of breath, and oh yeah Liz noticed. She shook my hand and she smiled at me. Yeah she smiled at me. Every song she sang was beautiful and she was super cute in her short black skirt, tight sparkly black top, and black boots that came up to her knees. Nothing could have made the night more perfect. I yelled and yelled for her to play carnivore but she never did but thats ok. and i loved janet's back up vocals, she was great. enough blabbering. katie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 21:38:42 PST From: "Dolphin 95" Subject: Re: supernova lyrics Oh4styhia wrote: "How is an f-16 wicked?" I always though it was "M-16," like the machine gun, especially because of Brad Wood's machine-gun-like drum rolling at that one part in that entire song. I originally heard "sheriff's bare wet ass" but on second listen realized my error. - -Jeff *************************************************************** Every hollow has its favorite sound -Liz Phair *************************************************************** ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #57 ***********************************
