Boy do I feel sheepish! ...Baaa... ~Emily ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 98 10:07:48 -0400 From: Meredith Robbins Subject: That's Them Dancing/They Stand Tensies I'm well nye positive that Liz sings "That's them dancing" on the album version of "Whip-Smart" and "They stand tensies" on the Girlysound version. I've always interpreted "tensies" to refer to jacks. First, you throw the ball up in the air, pick up one jack, and catch the ball before it bounces--that's onesies. Then, you throw the ball, pick up two jacks, and catch the ball before it bounces--that's twosies. And so on and so forth, until you run out of jacks. Making it to tensies would be quite a feat, since you're supposed to scatter the jacks to make it hard to scoop them all up at once. There's one problem with the jacks hypothesis, however: I've never heard anyone say "They stand tensies." Instead, it would be, "They got tensies," or "They got to tensies." But "They stand tensies" could be a regionalism, which would be a good reason to rewrite the lyric for the album. I dont really know who to classify a fan, I just hope her music makes you as happy and just satisfied as it makes me Megan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 13:25:23 -0700 From: jtconnolly Subject: random BS Some thoughts: KingAdRock: A. nice screen name. B. Whip Smart is way under-rated and simply brilliant...don't know if I want to go ahead and say "my favorite" Liz CD (i can't do that for any of them, i don't think), but just AWSEOME. Shane into Nashville is one of the strongest back to back pair of songs in the history of music. (!) Suzanne: Your story about hearing "never said" after forgetting your tape is fun ...coincidences like that are always cool--and make life a little more enjoyable; sorry your friends couldn't appreciate the moment, as mine probably wouldn't. At least you know I enjoy your tale. Greased Lightning: Got in the vinyl of PB single...it is awesome...very much like Liz, but also fresh and different at the same time...the band plays a lot bigger role in the recording of this, I think. More intricate and more going on...very fun track, though...Jase you are right, "greased lightning" is like "love is nothing", but with the lightness of "uncle Alvarez" tossed in there, also. the guitar work is VERY similar to something on WCSE, but I can't place it yet. The chorus is so much fun and so warm and yummy, I love hearing it everytime!! now I just have to get it burned onto disc. > Jason Jenks wrote: > > << admit it -how hot she is. No problems at all with anyone's orientation. However, Jasons Jenk's post DOES have it's place on this list because the first part of what he says is SO VERY TRUE, and I can TOTALLY relate, and I'm sure many others can, too. His wording "if you're a guy..."etc. was probably just of the top of his head, maybe out of line, but he probably meant no offense to anyone. Even a gay male can find a woman attractive, I assume; he doesn't have to foster a desire to be sexually active with her, I guess, which is where his remarks come in, maybe? Bottom line... If he can't write about his attraction to LIZ as both a phenomenal artist, and a very beautiful woman, than there is something wrong with this list (and society?). If his remarks offended you or my remarks offend you, I'm sorry (honestly and sincerely). Just a couple of guys that think Liz is hot, as well as an awesome musician/person. {Jason J...sorry for sticking my nose into your business...this just was something I wanted to comment on.] Following up on this, MARTINA: thank you for the reports on Matthew Sheppard...I had heard, but not read, anything about this monstrosity; what deplorable human events. Even though we are technologically advanced as a society at this point, there are times when we seem to be at the infancy of social development when assholes pull the shit like those that beat him did. Even though it was great to get that info and be able to learn more about a very important issue, my question, and it's only a question (one you seemingly batted around, also, as you were unsure whether you wanted to send the posts) is this: How does that belong on the Liz Phair digest?? I'm not sure that it does, as much as I see its importance and apreciated getting it. Ever had to deal with a religious zealot who makes it uncomfortable because all they want to do is relate everything to religion and talk religion, etc?? it's out of place and it's not right and it's no fun. i think the same thing goes here. Anyone can get on here to promote a cause...the asshole right wingers referred to in the article can get on here and look for support, but it would be wrong because it is out of place. I'm on this list because of Liz Phair and her strong fan base...if i start getting inundated with other shit, it will suck. granted one post is WAY FAR from "inundated," but trends can start easily... Your sending the reports was a noble and respectable act and you show guts and courage in supporting a worthwhile cause that you feel strongly about... however, in my final analysis (worth a pile of the shit at the end of the day!), it is sort of out of place. totally feeling weird about sending these posts, expecting to be shunned by you all for a long time, I'm out of here, FRAN "...her fingers roll a reefer cigarrette..." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 15:26:50 -0500 (EST) From: ~Dana~ Subject: blah >>>>>p.s.- I still think the "Whip-Smart" line is "that's them dancing" too what is it if it's not that? i always thought that was it as well.... wow, i ahve nothing else to add. i am still looking for guitar tabs thouggh. olga didnt help too much - -dana : ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 19:59:07 -0400 From: Michael Yarbrough Subject: RE: random BS (very little Liz content) Fran wrote: <<>> I didn't say it didn't. You try being invisible for 20 years and then get back to me. I don't think he intended offense either, but I also thought I should try to let him know that maybe, just maybe, all guys aren't exactly like him. That's all. The fact that a public or private apology, or even explanation, has not appeared is revealing in itself. <<>> So attractive that he has a visceral, uncontrollable desire for a naked picture of her? Doubt it. Y'all can be a couple or a couple hundred of guys thinking Liz is hot all day for all I care, and can talk about it on the list, too. I just don't think you should assume, subconsciously or consciously, that all the guys on this list or in the world share your desire. Understand? I don't want to protract this into a long debate, but I feel as if my post was misrepresented and want to clear the air. :-) - --Michael NP: Portishead, _Portishead_ ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #55 ***********************************
