I think she knew she owned us from the beginning. A few questions for all who have seen her live: 1) Has anyone ever seen a sexier (rock) performance than the one Liz does during "Dance Of The Seven Veils?" 2) Has anyone out there been lucky enough to have a whole crowd dancing (to, say, "What Makes You Happy")? I moved as well as I could, but seemed surrounded by stiffs. 3) Did anyone have any idea how POWERFUL she'd be live? I mean even 6'1" was more powerful than I ever thought it COULD be. I also stayed out in back last night waiting, but...I didn't feel like catching frostbrite, and the 30-45 minute wait was getting to me. Did she ever come out? Did she leave via the batmobile? For anyone who was looking for other digest-ers, I was standing with my friend away from the crowd (I wore a green jacket). Liz was absolutely incredible, and I'd suggest everyone try and get their hands on some live discs, tapes, whatever from this tour. She's come a long way in playing live since 1993. I've read more than once (this list and the Whip-Smart lyrics and guitar tabs book put out by Hal Leonard Corp. included) that the line is, "When they do the double-dutch they stand tensies." Okay, first of all, what the hell does that mean? Second, if you watch the video and read her lips (c'mon all you lip readers, I know you're out there) that is definitely NOT what she's saying. Isn't the line, "When they do the double- dutch that's them dancing?" And for that matter, what the hell does that mean? I don't know, but it makes a lot more sense to me than the first version. I was suprised at both shows how many 21 and unders there were; I was expecting a lot more late-twentysomethings to myself. No offense to those of you younger than me (and given the membership of this list, I probably should'nt have been so suprised); I just didn't think that that many people in that age group would have heard of her. Both halls were packed, of course. The lighting was much better at the 9:30, since the stage was deeper and had more room to set up. Also, there were able to pull the curtains closed there, which improved both the slide show and the effect created for the beginning of "Explain It to Me". I thought the rest of the band was playing a little better in Washington, too. On the other hand, Liz herself seemed a little more relaxed in Philly, and the sound seemed a little better (maybe 'cause I was closer to the stage.) Someone had asked earlier what she said in between songs at DC. Besides the introductions to songs, the lines I remember were: - --At one point, after a lot of people had given her "woo-hoos", she talked about how she used to make that rooster-like sound at shows and thought she was so cool. (She said much the same in Philly.) - --She made a joke about what it would be like if adults went trick-or-treating; "Yeah, go over to their house. They've got liquor!" - --She said that the new 9:30 was a lot bigger than the old one and asked how long it had been open. When someone yelled, "Two years," she said, "Man, I've been gone a long time." In Philly, at one point, someone yelled out, "Marry me, Liz!" She giggled nervously, looked at her ring, and said, "Decisions, decisions." She also said how much she liked Philly and the stores on South Street. (Of course, from reading everyone else's comments, it seems like she says something llike that every show.) I was much more impressed with the actual performance than I thought I would be. These are the first two shows I've been to in my life. I just never thought live music was all that wonderful from hearing it on tape or CD. Bands always seem to change the songs around and make them sound worse than they orginally did. It surprised me how good the concerts were. Besides the emotional rush of being there, she and the band did a really good job of arranging the songs; they were different enough to be interesting without being so changed that you lost the original appeal of the songs. It was also just really neat to watch her move around and have fun on stage. The part at the very end of the DC show, when she gave her guitar to the roadie and just started dancing like mad to the end of "Fuck and Run", was fabulous. At the Philly show, she was wearing very thick platform shoes where the bottom was all one piece; no space between heel and toe. During "Dance of the Seven Veils", she actually slid her feet back in the shoes so that she was basically standing tip-toe on the heels. During the entire song, she was writhing sensuously on the back of the heels. It was quite the thing to watch, particuarly with her shadow being projected on the side wall of the hall at the same time. I went to the 9:30 with my friend Mike, who lives in town. He's a seasoned concert-goer, and he was impressed, so you know it's not just us true believers who think she's good. He was particularly happy that she did "Mesmerizing." Of course, I went to the Philly show with Steve, Julia, Danielle, Megan, and Matt, and you already know the wonderful thing that happened to Steve. (I was standing right next to him when it happened, and I just about died.) The security was screwing around with us something awful afterwards; first they told us she wouldn't be coming out the back, then they told us she wouldn't be coming out the front. I still don't know how they got her out of there; I don't see how there could be a side entrance, given that the theatre has buildings between it and the two side streets, but maybe there's a secret passage somewhere. But of course it all worked out OK, because we caught up with her before she got on the bus and all got stuff signed. (And thank you to everyone who was with me and didn't say how geeky the signs I made up were!;-) Oh, well, I only had a half hour at the end of work to think of them.) I was glad I got to meet you all. Two quick lyric notes; has everyone noticed that she sings "minions" rather than "girlfriend" in Flower? Either she's really sticking to the album version, or else the speculation on the list a while ago about Matador censoring the "girlfriend" line is definitely wrong. Also, did anyone else notice that during "Support System", when she sings "One of them rings in your hand," she makes the telephone sign? I always thought she meant a ring like on your finger, but maybe she means the phone instead. . . Anyway, enough for one evening. I swear on the sacred guitar of Liz that I'll have the final Top 10 poll results up by the end of the week.
