Everyone keeps talking about how Liz will be done touring after the Chicago shows. Well, a few weeks ago, Liz gave an interview on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic. The DJ specifically asked her how long she would be on tour. And SHE SAID HERSELF that she would be on tour al least through the Spring. I heard it myself. Like I saig the interview was less than a month ago, and thats what she said. Ao unless she's lying, we all should get to see her. Of course, it is so easy to be tough and together in the studio where if you make a mistake you can fix it and your audience doesn't ever find out. Liz still has to battle with stage fright from what I've heard, so I think that in spite of that, she puts on a great show. I have also heard Liz say in interviews that she purposely tries to make it seem like a sweet little girl is singing, because it is more enlightening and shocking to most people. She wants it to be like Dorothy Gale saying she fucked someone. Because of that, I think it is totally appropriate that she sang in a little girl voice when she played Flower live. And to whoever actually wants to hear Liz Phair on the radio: I think we should consider ourselves lucky that radio stations don't usually play her stuff because it is much more satisfying to play the albums to ourselves when we don't have to worry about the songs being edited for explicit content and the possibility that she will be overexposed like Alanis Morrissette and ultimately become like Paula Cole or that twerpy Natalie Imbruglia. I don't get it, Liz is short, like me around 5'2-5'3, but I could never wear boots like that--I would look so retarded, so I give her major credit for being able to pull it off! Anyway, I just loved the part when she was talking about the Supernova video because that helmet part is my favorite part too, and I just think it's funny that she mentioned it. Never said is my other favorite video and I'm surprised they didn't play it, but oh well. If this has been asked before sorry, but I haven't been on this list for all that long. Why doesn't Liz play with Casey and Brad anymore? It seems like they were so tight and now she's got a whole new band. It just surprises me because Brad worked with her on WCSE--did they just have different schedules or what? To Lucas--thanks for the video, I finished watching it and it's great. The sound kinda sucks but that's my fault, I sent you a crappy Blockbuster tape--won't be doing that again. I was so surprised to see how frickin' good Liz is at playing by herself. I've only seen her once and it was with a band, but by herself she is so confident--if anyone ever gets the chance to see the video (the one with her playing live in NYC) you will find it hard to think she ever had stage fright. The video did show me that I have a lot of practicing to do before I'm able to play any of her songs. If I had to remember that many Barre chords I think I'd have blow something up! She is amazing! Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 11:13:24 -0400 From: Mike Marlatt Subject: Liz Phair, A Rant Well I've just about finished the book and all I can say is that I was glued to it for a good chunk of the weekend. It's not all about Liz Phair but to the person who started reading it and then put it down because he started ranting about his ex-girlfriend, you are missing out. In the second half of the book the author really makes some great analysis of Exile (all of which could be argued as inaccurate by some!) and the best part is that he quotes a lot of lyrics and I kept finding myself humming portions of songs as he flies through his reordering of the album. The other plotlines are good but definetely have some creepy parts. Him and all his friends and girlfriends have some pretty messed up sexuality problems and a case of pyromania but some of these parts really cracked me up. The highlight is his discussion of some old songs lyrics and how his friends or parents misinterpret some of the lyrics to say something other than what the singer is acutally saying. How people just assume that it says something that makes since to them. The whole story leads to a line in "Fuck in Run" which he can't for the life of him conclude exactly what she's saying, just what he's thinking she's saying. It appealed to me so much because it's the line after the "I want a boyfriend" part for which I have always sung as "It's better than solace, It's better than solace". Turns out it's actually "like letters and sodas", proving the entire point the he was trying to make about lyrics! There's parts of the book (a couple of storylines) that I skimmed when the came up but I really think that it's a great book and us Liz fans can appreciate it more than anyone. Make sure you know your Guyville or else I doubt the effect would be the same. So if you pass it off to any friends for reading, use it as an excuse to sit them down to listen to Guyville for a few days first, they'll thank you later. It really is a must read for a true Liz phan. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 08:55:19 -0700 From: Edward Dodge Subject: onehundredandtwentyminutes and so it was midnight, not an especially abnormal time for me to be up and about but a time possessing a degree of uniqueness, a flavor less vanilla than swiss orange or pecan praline. the television had until this moment blathered its inane nothings to whomsoever would listen. but this my friends was about to change as my attention fixated upon the program at hand. tension mounted with the opening credits, the pulse quickening with anticipation, the eyes beginning to glaze over, the senses recoiling in despair. To draw any conclusion from a four-minute appearance between commercial breaks is ridiculous. (If you've ever seen Van Morrison on a good night live versus the way he appears on tv, you know what I'm talking about.) I'd actually go so far to say that I LIKE the fact that she's not comfortable in the idiotic talk show spotlight. That's why she's cool - because she's not comfortable simply selling herself. I can only speak for one show on this tour (Portland, OR), but even there it was clear that she needed about four or five songs to get entirely in her groove and comfortable on stage. As for the choice of songs, blame the record industry. I have a hard time believing she's playing the same single on every show because she wants to. And please Dear God don't ask her to wear special clothes to look cool and be popular - I can't even think of a response to that. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 17:36:38 GMT From: "Julia Rios" Subject: anybody have 120 minutes they can copy for me? hey everyone, my friend who would have taped 120 minutes for me had a minor mishap in which her tv blew up on saturday night. therefore, i have no tape. if anyone has it and willing to copy for money, for trade wahtever, please let me know second, i would like to state for the record that i have always loved the liz appearance/lyrics etc contrast. i thought that was one of the coolest things about her and i agree with steve about her being one of the coolest, sexiest most with it entertainers of our time. I got the Whip Smart video now! woo hoo! I've watched this so many times on my computer and am so happy to have it choppy-free! It's too bad they didn't show the Jealously and Supernova videos, since I liked the clips they showed. The interview with Liz was very nice. I love it when they let the artists say whatever they'd like, giving us the chance to know them better. I loved the part where she said, "Don't even breathe." I realized that my imaginations and creativities run wild like Liz's and I guess this is why I like her so much. Speaking of imaginations, I had another idea pop into my head a few days ago. I'm driving down the highway and see a bunch of signs for beanie babies and what comes into my head? Yup, our very own WCSE beanie baby! woo hoo! I started on one last night and here's my idea. A huge egg, like those in the Polyester video, with the logo from the bumpersticker on the front. On the back has the album's name with the date it was released (8/11/98) and more colorful yellow circles. So what does everyone think? Gosh, my mind is always throwing something out! About the Cinco de Mayo stamps, I went to the post office and they didn't have any left. So all I have is one stamp and will be scanning it once I get my computer back and will it send to anyone if they email me privately. For the metric system conversion of my cookie recipe: whitechocolatespaceegg cookies Dough: 500 mL sifted all purpose flour 250 mL butter (can be easily less, I'd use 200 mL cups) 1 egg yolk 200 mL cup sour cream (an 8 oz. container is enough) Filling: 200 mL granulated sugar 5 mL cinnamon white chocolate chips Measure flour into bowl. Cut butter into flour with pastry blender, fork, or finger tips. Blend flour and butter together. (for better results, use hands) Add beaten egg yolk and sour cream. Mix well. When blended, shape into a ball and sprinkle with flour. Wrap well into wax paper. Chill in refrigerator for several hours (about 2 hours is enough). Combine sugar and cinnamon ingredients. Sprinkle board lightly with flour (you might have to use more flour, since the dough can be really sticky). Remove dough from refrigerator and divide into three parts. Roll out one portion at a time, making a large square about 2 cm thick. Cut into squares. Place white chocolate chips in center of dough squares and spoon filling (sugar and cinnamon) into each square. Roll from one corner to opposite corner (you can also just fold the corners to the center, covering the filling). If you like, you can put some chocolate chips on the top of the cookies before placing the cookies on the cookie sheet. Place rolls on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 191 degrees (Celsius) for 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and let it chill. For better tasting results, eat cookies the next day or five hours after removing from oven.Enjoy! Gosh, I feel like I'm writing my will because when I heard the news of the computer, I couldn't help myself from crying. I'm going to miss posting stuff on this list. I'll be able to check up on the digest by using the computers at school. So with any tv appearances and news, please post! Please allow myself to say thanks to everyone for making this list the best there is. If it wasn't for this list, I wouldn't know so much about Liz and her music. A friend of mine was surprised to find out that I know so much about Liz when I've only been listening to her for two months. As I say, hoooked on support systim wurks fer me! hehe! It is so helpful to have all these minds pooling their information. I became a Liz fan only about 6 months ago when I stole my brother's EIG CD and listened to it non-stop for 3 months straight. Then I bought WCSE in Aug and loved that also. And since I subscribed to this list, I've got all these rare tracks/bootlegs/singles in the mail! OK, the down side: Liz came here(Minneapolis)last Sat. However, she played a 21+ concert. I'm 18... I tried so hard to find a fake ID, find someone to make one, anything, but I never did. I'm not that upset anymore, hopefully she'll tour again soon and I'll go see her then. OK, people have been talking about Liz's image as opposed to her music. My only observation is that the people on this list are really awesome but sometimes when I look on other web sites and message boards, there are some guys who talk about how "hot" liz is and how they just stare at her and don't really listen to her music. This totally pisses me off cuz if I've learned anything from Liz's music it's that beauty is not important. Liz and my two other favs(Ani & Tori)I feel are incredible role models and I don't feel that their looks have anything to do with their music. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now... Well, that was really long, so thanks for reading! Suzanne _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? She played for a pretty long time, and the crowd was so into it. The slides did go on for a while, but it was ok. People were singing along and cheering after every song, hoping she'd come out. She didn't come out from behind some curtain, though, like some people have mentioned before. She was all smily and seemed to be having a lot of fun. Near the end, people were cheering for 'divorce song'. She said: "It sounds like you're saying 'dionne warwick'". Then she played the song. A while later people were cheering again and she said: "Yeah, around this time, someone always says 'fuck and run'. Don't worry I've got you covered." People kept shouting things at her and she said "I've got all of you covered." I think she played just about every song I expected..i had kind of forgotten what the setlist was. Less than 24 hours from now, I will be seeing Liz live in Toronto. Needless to say, I can't wait and the anticipation will probably keep me from getting any sleep tonight. Today's the day! I've been waiting much too long for this. Anyway, I was trying to organize a way for all of us going to the Toronto show to meet up, but didn't have much luck when it came to making definite plans. It seems like everyone is arriving at various times and it was hard to get a handle on things, especially when I was trying to figure things out too far ahead of time, before a few people's plans were finalized. If anyone does want to meet up at the show, I shouldn't be too hard to find. I plan on arriving well before the doors are supposed to open, and I will be dressed really casually. I will be wearing jeans and one of the old Liz shirts from the Guyville list, provided the slight stain it in comes out. If not, I'll probably wear one of my Adidas shirts instead. Also, I'll be wearing black Airwalks, more than likely a baseball cap, and my left ear is pierced. Hopefully this will give everyone enough of an idea of what I look like. I will be with two other list members (well, one has recently departed), Dan MacDonald and Steve Kisko, and meeting a few more people once we're there. I know Steve has said that he will be wearing his 'Crass' shirt, like the one in the _Whip-Smart_ liners, and Dan has bleached spikes. Hopefully we'll be easy to find. I'm putting together a banner or two on behalf of the mailing list for us to display during the show, and I hope we will be able to get right up to the front. I don't think I have ever looked forward to a show this much -- I just know it will be incredible. I'm trying to mentally block out all of the setlists for previous shows that have been posted, so that I can have a few surprises. If that doesn't work, it's really no big deal. I may not be surprised, but you can be sure I'll be mesmerized at the very least. Also, since Liz will be at MuchMusic at 1:00 in the afternoon, I plan on hanging out down there for a while in the hopes of catching a glimpse of Liz. If anyone else from the list plans on doing the same, feel free to say hello if you see me. I probably won't get there right at 1, but a short time afterwards. Is anyone planning on taping the MuchMusic appearance? If so, please let me know. I'm going to try to get a friend to tape it for me, but if I can't find anyone to, I will definitely want to trade for a copy. The timer on my VCR hasn't been working, otherwise I would just tape it myself. Anyway, I hope to see a lot of you at the show tomorrow night -- maybe we can even hang out for a while afterwards, if anyone is interested. Looking forward to a night of Liz, Jase ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #50 ***********************************
