Well, I was wrong - I e-mailed and I didn't get that catalog... However, I did get Matador's own... AND A WHITECHOCOLATESPACEEGG STICKER! (as well as some other ones - Cat Power, etc.) It's shaped like a wcse (egg- shaped), has yellow bubbles, and says Liz phair in the wcse font (red- outlined). I'm gonna write to ask them for more. I'm also pretty dazzled about how low their prices are (esp. LP's - only $8) and that shipping is included in the price. Sorry if this has been discussed on the list in the past - I've only been on it for about a month, so I wouldn't know. In response to Katie's post (and partially to Jason's as well), the demo version of Paula Cole's "Bethlehem" and the b-side "Jimmy Hoffa Jokes" by Aimee Mann that is on the "Modern Day Storytellers" compilation are also available on a rare CD that Imago Records put out called 'The Imago Records Traveling Road Show'. That CD also features another demo of Paula's... the song, "Saturn Girl". Being a huge fan of both Paula and Aimee, I made sure I bought a copy. And I have to say that "Jimmy Hoffa Jokes" is one of my all- time favorite songs by Aimee. And Katie, the "Jour de le Terre: Earth Day 1996" is a very cool compilation. It is not a compilation of all-live performances though. Sarah's "Mary" is live and it is one of the best renditions of the song that I have ever heard. Other artists include Loreena McKennitt, Alannah Myles and the Crash Test Dummies. Pretty good CD, I guess... I think it's worth it for the Sarah track alone. All that talking and no Liz content. Hi again, I couldn't resist adding my list of concerts I've been to: First concert: Green Jelly - in Vienna, I think 1993; (I went there by myself - the venue has been a slaughterhouse before, and it was rather scary; I don't even remember why I wanted to see them since I've never really been a fan.....) Best concert(s) so far: Heather Nova - in Vienna 1994; there were like 100 people at the most; she played a small, very intimate venue.....and it was so, so INTENSE. Portishead - in Chicago 1997.....'just love the band PJ Harvey & Portishead - in Vienna 1998 (too many people, I couldn't really concentrate on the music as much as I wanted to; and Polly didn't play many of her old songs, which are definately my favourites.....but still I liked it a lot) Tori Amos - in Vienna 1993 (I had really bad seats and there was a super tall guy sitting in front of me.....so that was a drag but besides that the concert was absolutely great; Tori Amos was my favourite artist at the time) Aphex Twin, Sneaker Pimps and Linoleum - in Chicago 1997; very cool, a strange combination of bands though Lilithfair 97 - in Chicago; with Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Emmilou Harris, Beth Orton, Lisa Loeb........it wasn't my very favourite line up but I was there with people I loved and just the whole atmosphere made the concert very, very special!! Lilithfair 98 - in Chicago; well, what can I say. I finally got to see Liz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (as well as Natalie Merchant and Sarah McLachlan, DesRee, Drugstore,...all artists that I really like a lot) K's Choice - I saw them twice, in Vienna and Chicago. (I just love the singers voice) Radiohead - in Chicago 1997 SOOOOO GOOODD!!!!! Nick Cave - in Vienna....to me he is a "genius" Jethro Tull - free concert in Chicago 1997 other concerts: Belly, The Cranberries and REM - in Vienna 1995 (I think).......Belly of course played first; it seemed like I was the only person there who knew Belly - so I was their only fan. Nobody listened to their music, in fact, most people were yelling that they wanted to see the Cranberries or/and REM and that Belly should leave the stage..... I was really pissed off at people's attitude and their ignorance. Salad - Vienna 1995 Drugstore - Vienna 1995 Echobelly - Vienna 1995 Blur - Chicago 1997 Superchunk, Seam Freak Water Jamboree 97 (Beck, Jamiroquai - both were surprisingly GOOD -, Social Distortion, Veruca Salt!!!!!!!, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Erasure) Gene - in Chicago 1997 The Verve - in Chicago etc................ most boring concert: (people from Chicago will propably hate me for that) Poi Dog Pondering in Chicago 1997.......fortunately I didn't have to pay! most "embarrassing" concert: Rolling Stones - in Vienna 1998 (my excuse: My dad "needed" someone to go with him - he paid for my ticket) Well, sorry for this long list ( I didn't mean to make it that long, somehow it just happened.............) C-ya Martina. .........keep your ear to the ground........ Can anyone verify which version is correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Although it stirs up painful memories for me, in fact, although Liz was SCHEDULED to play at the Ottawa Lilith show, she didn't show up. No explanation, other than an official statement of 'scheduling conflicts'. So I drove 200 kilometres for a non-Liz show. All to say, she better show up for the concert in Toronto! See some of you there! It's strange that people don't get that... she's been doing it since Girlysound, albeit in a slightly different way (using a 'girlish' voice to say 'dirty' things). I thought Liz was really "enchanting" in concert, acting girlish, or whatever. I can't think of anyone in the music business who manages to be so sexy, intelligent, and cool at the same time (of course, I have my own ideas of what is sexy and cool, so keep that in mind). Another thing... I have to say this, I can't help myself. It's so great to see Fran posting here, because when me and Jason met him and a friend at a Liz show over the summer and enthusiastically endorsed the mailing list ("Join the list! Join the list!"), I honestly didn't think he and his friend would join. No need to chide him for knocking other artists and the people who like them (I wish I had the guts to do that again... guess I've lost my edge). Go, Fran. "Alice Springs," the song, the place, and the photographer may not all be linked in the ways you all have been thinking. I'm sure what Liz is referring to in her song (which is one of my favorites, by the way -- not too many people seem to dig this one) is the town in Australia, but I don't know about the photographer. (that is, I know *nothing* about her). Anyway, here's something else to throw into the equation: there is a porn actress who goes by the name Alice Springs. Thank you so much to the people who passed on the story of Liz telling her ghost story. However, I have a question now. If that was her only *true* ghost story, then what about the ghost she reportedly saw at the Metro (Chicago) and wrote about for the book Great Chicago Stories? If I could ask Liz one question, I'd ask her about that, keeping with the holiday spirit, which I plan to do if I get the chance to meet up with her again at the Toronto show. And why, oh why can't Liz find the time to smoke pot anymore? She's always been a big legalization-of-it supporter (and still is -- see: George magazine, Sept. 1998). Oh well. Lastly, I will be at the Toronto show on Tuesday. Once again, in the hope that Liz will start recognizing me (and not becuz I never change my shirt), I'll be wearing the 'Crass' shirt as seen in the WS sleeve photos. See you there... What do you think this is, a tanning salon?!" ~monty burns ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 18:18:19 -0700 From: "Heather Coleman" Subject: Sunday musings I am glad Robert wrote this. It echos what I was trying to say a couple weeks ago. I guess what was troubling me about Liz's feminine, mainstream look and relatively demure stage presence is that it makes her more palatable to many people. And then that whole Ani underarm hair discussion just seemed to reinforce this suspicion. I mean, don't you think the reception to a song like "Flower" would be somewhat different if Liz were not attractive by mainstream definitions? I heard her music and loved it before I saw many pictures of her or watched her in concert. However, I had read in some article that when she was making EIG she consciously worked with sweet melodies or a girlish look while singing raunchy, bitter, violent, raw things (or however you want to describe her lyrics). I enjoyed and respected this greatly as an artistic statement and felt like I understood it. Personally, it's sort of fun to do - contrast your look with what's in your head so that you can blitz people when necessary. Flexibility. But when I actually saw her in concert and was reading some comments on this list, I struggled with the image/message issue a bit more. Say you have this artist (Liz) who chooses this baked potato physical appearance in order to create a conscious contrast, but then people who see her don't recognize it as a conscious contrast? Of course, who am I to assume what she means or control what people like? But the crowd response just might influence how I feel about the artist and her music. I can't help it. Maybe it's just like that person quoted in the LA concert review said about feeling weird because you have to share, or what a listmember wrote about how her music is made to rock out by yourself in your bedroom with. I think "riot-grrrl" is sort of a derogatory, backlashing, characterization that I don't relate to employing. I see it printed a lot. Rob wrote: >Now here lies the contradiction. Her on-stage persona is very wholesome and sweet. She looks and talks like some sophomore sorority chick. Saying things like, "here's an old number" and "I hope you like this one." Who is that woman? Could this be the same person who writes and sings rough, pure, emotional diatribes with uncompromising sincerity and depth. One with a penetrating voice that moves all that listen. No. The woman on-stage was coy and unassuming who seemed almost embarrassed phrasing lyrics spiced with four-letter words. She sung "Flower" perfectly. But it it didn't fit. It was very disconcerting. I really expect an ultra-cool woman who went to the school of hard knocks. She's the girl next door. I wanted the Girlysound Liz Phair who sings "I know its not easy" and "One less thing" not sugar and spice. I am still confused.> Cynthia wrote: Okay, so here's a brainteaser. If Alice Springs is a place in Australia, what does Crater Lake have to do with the song of the same name? Yeah for early 80's stuff! I while back, I let this music store person suggestively sell me a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts greatest hits album which contains "Crimson and Clover." I like it all over again, but differently. hc ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 20:22:32 -0700 From: "Heather Coleman" Subject: class Robert wrote: oh yeah, one more thing I was going to say is that it's sort of interesting that she is this upper middle class woman who had a prominant physician father, which to some extent allows her the freedom to be alternative and critique things. not a criticism, just an interesting paradox I see sometimes.
