To Jeff Larson: a HUGE public thank-you for the Liz videotape! You're the best! And Steve K., thanks too - I just don't have any blank tapes on hand, and I keep forgetting to pick some up when I'm at Wal-Mart. To Robert Cormack, re: the contradiction between Liz's songs and her current image - I really think this is no accident. It's also a big reason why I (and probably many others) like Liz so much. Her physical persona has always been part of her, and I think it's part of her message too. A woman *can* look a certain way, set you up to expect certain thoughts or behaviors, and then blow your presumptions away. Isn't that much more exciting than fitting a riot-grrrl, or sorority-girl, stereotype? To David Weich, re: Alice Springs - I believe that Liz is referring to the city (or is it more of a village?) of Alice Springs, Australia, which is really "out there" in the outback. I haven't been there, but a friend of mine grew up there. But that doesn't mean Liz isn't also referring to the photographer you mention. Re: "GETTING PEOPLE YOU KNOW INTO LIZ" DISCUSSION - I recently played Whip-Smart in the car for 2 friends as we were car-pooling to see Dracula, the play (no, there's no subliminal connection between WS and Dracula). The only comments, other than a bit of chuckling at the 4-letter words, was "Who's this?" and "Who turned you on to this chick?" I dutifully replied, "Liz Phair" and "*I* did, myself." No other comments or questions. *sigh* To MrE: if you climb up your ass, you will be in even worse physical shape than you are now, and will probably have to see your doctor again. Please don't do this. (P.S., the 80s weren't THAT bad!) ;^) And for the love of all that's decent in the world, don't send your posts 7x! (though that *probably* wasn't intentional...) To FRAN/jtconnolly, re: your "personal assessment (and a damn good one, I must say)" of female musicians - I did enjoy reading your opinions, but yes, they are only YOUR opinions! Please don't criticize others for liking/not liking certain artists or songs, just because their choices don't match yours. Diversity, and personal taste, is where it's at. And LOL is "laughing out loud," and means you're grinning. I think I'll go listen to more Liz now, or watch my new videotape... thanks for listening! Cindy "Well look at me, I'm frightening my friends." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Oct 1998 22:21:19 -0500 From: Kaufmann@IPFW.EDU (Kaufmann,Mike) Subject: Liz's performing I haven't seen her live, but have seen the past few performances on Letterman et al., and have to agree. Liz doesn't somehow match her material. It might be just that knowing the general area she comes from she reminds me so much of someone from Winnetka that decided she might like to try singing (which in a way she is). Obviously her song writing talent is much more than that, but her stage presence, though apparently stronger than it once was, still doesn't match the strength of her songs. I know everyone on the list that saw her really loves her performances and I'm sure I would too, but I'm talking about how she appears to those who have no more idea about Liz than the man in the moon, which is still a hell of lot of people. The remark of the record exec that someone mentioned about her Leno performance (that she didn't help herself much there) made me decide Liz needs to go out more on a limb a bit more, present more of an edge in her TV performances. How about dropping the Winnetka dresses and getting a bit funkier in her dress? How about dropping Polyester Bride and going for Johnny Feelgood? It would be playing more on that older image of her from Exile, but what's wrong with that? That's what put her on the map, and it's still a strong part of what she's doing. Further, it would offer more for new listeners to latch onto. Rob Said >Now here lies the contradiction. Her on-stage persona is very wholesome and sweet. She looks and talks like some sophomore sorority chick. Saying things like, "here's an old number" and "I hope you like this one." Who is that woman? Could this be the same person who writes and sings rough, pure, emotional diatribes with uncompromising sincerity and depth. One with a penetrating voice that moves all that listen. No. The woman on-stage was coy and unassuming who seemed almost embarrassed phrasing lyrics spiced with four-letter words. She sung "Flower" perfectly. But it it didn't fit. It was very disconcerting. I really expect an ultra-cool woman who went to the school of hard knocks. She's the girl next door. I wanted the Girlysound Liz Phair who sings "I know its not easy" and "One less thing" not sugar and spice. I am still confused. Who was that woman?
