Natalie Merchant's split show airs Nov. 6th. I hope they air Liz for the whole hour (I don't know if they will edit down the live show for television, but I do know there aren't any commercials on PBS). Everyone will have to check their local listings for their local PBS affiliate - the show is called "Sessions at West 54th," website is http://www.sessionsatwest54th.com/ .... About my friend, whom I gave her EIG for her birthday, I asked her if she liked the cd and she said yes. She couldn't name any songs in particular, but Fuck and Run was one she was able to. So, what did I ask her next? If Liz ever came into town, would she go? She said yes! woo hoo! Me have a Phair-fan-in-the-works! Cindy - great idea about listing concerts! Fave concerts I went to: Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan (both solo and Lilith Fair), Paula Cole (3x), and Stevie Nicks. The people I met: Paula Cole, after I ran across the street to her bus at 1:30am without giving it a thought of a car hitting me! Lisa Loeb, I missed her whole concert, but saw her for four songs and got lucky to meet her afterwards. Jay Bellerose, Paula's drummer, waiting outside the back of the arena and he was walking family members to his car. Sigh, I still have to give thanks to my mother for driving me two hours to see Sheryl Crow. It doesn't sound like a long drive now, compared to the stories I've been hearing on this list. Just wondering, how big are the venues Liz has been playing at? If I know how big they are, it could give me a general idea of where she would be playing if she ever came down south. *still has fingers crossed* Also, I could get an idea of whether or not I have a chance of meeting her. I thought of providing the info of where I got the Matador catalog. My guess (and please correct me if it's wrong) is that both these names were inspired by a town in central Australia (Northern Territory) called Alice Springs. It is basically the closest town to a huge rock called Ayers Rock (Uluru by the aborigines, therefore the proper name, but, unfortunately, most people don't know it) that most people have probably seen pictures of. Very large red rock, looks like a turtle shell or something, very beautiful, out in the middle of nowhere, basically (of course, central Australia pretty much is the middle of nowhere, no offense). The rock is a fairly popular tourist spot, so Alice Springs is kind of the jumping-off point for these visitors. The town used to be called Stuart, after the first white man to explore the area (John Stuart), but in the early 1930's the name was changed to Alice Springs. Anyway, back to the point, I'd venture to say that that's where Liz got the name, and the the photographer either uses it as a pseudonym, or her parents decided to name her after a small town in central Australia. Or they could all be coincidences. >American stations take note, these people are BUYING records to play on air, >that's enthusiasm for you. I know the BBC don't have much money (it's a BBC >station) I'd love to see stations over here finally get a damn clue and start to do that. But they're too concerned with making a profit to ever play something that intelligent people actually like! Instead of this mindless, assembly line shit we get inundated with now. I just love the whole concept of government radio, it seems so frigging weird to me. My impression of British radio, (just from what I've read, never heard it) is that it's more closely compared to American college radio than big, corporate stations. But even that is pretty weak. BBC radio is pretty unique, what with the government running it with some of their odd ideas (anybody here ever heard of needle time?) They have a website which can be found at . The single is listed under Current US Top 40 7" Singles, or something to that effect, and retails for $3. Since this is a promo single and they may not have many copies left, I wouldn't wait very long to order one. I've already got my copy of the single, and I must say, I'm really enjoying "Greased Lightning." Considering the tone of the lyrics, I was almost expecting this song to be a little more rocking, along the lines of, say, "6'1"," but it sounds more relaxed and poppy instead. I think it's this juxtaposition of sweet and sour that makes the song so enjoyable, and Liz's vocals are really addictive on this one. I guess if I were to compare this to any of the songs on _whitechocolatespaceegg_, I'd say it's closer to "Love Is Nothing" than anything else. I'm still looking around trying to find the Japanese CD single of "Polyester Bride." A few places I have emailed have said that they will see if they are able to get it, and if so, they will let me know when they have it in stock, at which point, I will pass along the ordering info to the list. I'm also going to take a look around at some of the record stores in Toronto while I'm there on Tuesday. If I do manage to find any place that has the single in stock and they have multiple copies, I will try to purchase as many as I can and offer the extras on a 'first come, first served' basis to the list. Also, since I saw a mention of the Amateur soundtrack in one of Katie's posts, I just thought that I'd mention that Liz's song on this album is the previously released "Girls! Girls! Girls" from _Exile in Guyville_. So, if anyone is thinking of purchasing this to get a new Liz track, you needn't bother. However, I will say that the soundtrack is worth getting anyway; there are some great songs on it by Pavement, Bettie Serveert, My Bloody Valentine, and PJ Harvey. I just wanted to point that out before anyone spent their money unnecessarily by ordering a copy. I have received a confirmation from Matador that the Columbus, OH show on October 23 has indeed been cancelled. There's no word yet on when this show will be rescheduled, but if I hear anything, I'll be sure to pass it along. Don't forget that Liz will be on 120 Minutes on Sunday night. The fifth and tenth videos played on the show that night will belong to Liz: "Polyester Bride" and "Whip-Smart." Also, a little desperate plea here: If anyone is planning on taping this and could make me a copy, I would really appreciate it. I've got some of Liz's other television appearances and videos to offer in exchange, or I'd be willing to dub a couple of live tapes if that is preferred. Also, in a recent post, I mentioned which videos of Liz's are commercially available on various video releases, and I completely blanked and forget that the "Tra La La Song" video can be found on the _Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits_ video compilation, which should still be available. On the subject of getting friends to listen to Liz, an acquaintance (now friend) of mine and I were discussing music one night back in July, and he ended up picking up a copy of _Exile in Guyville_ since I had raved about it so much. The next time I talked to him, he was telling me how much he loved the album, which I was glad to hear. Next thing I know, he bought _whitechocolatespaceegg_ the day it was released, liked it even more, and just last month purchased _Whip-Smart_. He's also going to be attending the Toronto show on Tuesday night. I'm just really impressed; I've never had a friend pick up on Liz's music quite so quickly. He also has since went out and bought Jen Trynin's _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ and Hole's _Celebrity Skin_ after having heard my copies. He has very few female artists in his music collection, which I'm trying to rectify -- I think I'm going to recommend either Aimee Mann or Sleater-Kinney to him next. For those who have asked who the members of Liz's touring band are, they are as follows: drummer Rick Menck (Matthew Sweet, Velvet Crush); bassist Dave Wilder; guitarist Buddy Judges (Aimee Mann); keyboardist Jebin Bruni; and backup vocalist Janet Rains. Sorry for such a long post! I went to best buy in my epic search for a new stereo and i found a CD with Paula's "original demo version" of Bethlehem on it. It's called Modern Day Storytellers, put out by Beloved Recordings. It also has songs by Liz Phair, Mary Lou Lord, Ani DiFranco, Jewel, Fiona Apple, Lenny Kravitz, and Victoria Williams. I also found a CD called Jour de le Terre 04/22/1996. It had a lot of cool artists and Sarah McLaclan singing Mary. Does anyone know if this is a live CD? I don't know if i should buy it ('cause i'm a poor student). Thanks. Love, Dusti (Cleopatra, Goddess of Denial; Queen Ruler of the Universe; DIVA; etc.) Of course, anything with Liz Phair, I'd automatically send it to the list! Me am going to search for this cd! Me >am going to search for this cd! >Katie ();) The _Modern Day Storytellers_ compilation was released on September 8, and Liz's contribution is "X-Ray Man" from _Whip-Smart_. I haven't bought a copy of this CD yet, but I probably will soon -- there is a Matthew Sweet outtake and an Aimee Mann b-side on it, neither of which I've heard before, but have to own. I'm glad to see that Liz was included on this collection -- maybe it will turn a few more ears her way. My girlfriend decided she didn't want to drive down for the show, so I only need one. I'm of course willing to pay more than face value for a ticket, so let me know your price. If anyone has an extra or unwanted tickets for the show, please contact me via email ASAP! If I can't find any here, I'll be forced to use a ticket broker and then the price really goes up. Thanks. FIRST TEIR: LIZ PHAIR is the single greatest female musician today, Bar none. she stands alone. 2. SECOND TEIR: PJ Harvey is close behind. She is pushing the envelop like no one else, creating complex, interesting music that is ahead of its time. In this same teir you have the incredible duo of (former) V. Salt, Loise Post and Nina Gordon...they rock like no other women can or will (awesome in concert, also.) Tanya Donnelly (and the former Belly) makes her way into this select group.(for all of you who like only "star" and not "king," I don't think you get it...and I certainly don't get your not liking "king." BTW, "low red moon" at Big Day Off at the meadows in CT a couple of years ago was the single greatest concert moment of my life...completely incredible and powerful and soooooo unbelievably moving.) Fiona Apple is simply great...prior to the release of WCSE, I was listening to "Tidal" like crazy. She is a new comer, but worthy of being part of this select upper echelon. 3.THIRD TEIR: This is still a very respectable and admirable group of musicians. The group gets bigger here and I'll probably leave people off the list, but here you have your: Julianna Hatfield (totally under-rated), Sheryl Crow (a real contender for second-teir status), Courtney Love and Hole, Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), and front-women or other women groups like Luscious Jackson, Eve's Plum, The Cranberries (first album ONLY...eveything else sucked), Elastica, Ani Di FRanco, Sara McLAughlin, POE, the Sunday's Harriet Wheeler (what an incredible voice), Lisa Loeb, Shirley M. of Garbage (i'm being generous in this placement), Jennifer Trynin, etc. 4. THE BOTTON RUNG: Down here lies Tori Amos, way over-rated and bringing very little to the table...she has the distinction of possibly being the worst concert I ever saw, too. (competing with the Smashing Pumpkins, a once great band--Gish and that second album rocked-- now reduced to a pompous, self-fulfilling bald-headed dork...who sucks...running his mouth everywhere and being really agrivating, at the same time pumping out CRAP for music. their concert was simply horrible!) Natalie Merchant couldn't be more plain and bland, either. her favorite flavor has got to be vanilla. Finally, although sometimes catchy and singable, etc., ALANIS has got to be queen of this bottom-feeder crowd. Whenever I catch myself actually listening to her and maybe leaving it on, I wake my self up and snap out of it and remind myself: "Alanis sucks. Alanis sucks. Alanis sucks..." That's my totally long-winded way of saying that Fionna is great and Tori sucks and both are just swimming in Liz's wake, anyhow. Before I get shelled with hate mail, death threats, etc., I'd like to give the ol' Support -System disclaimer: "this is just my opinion and you are entitled to yours and can't we all just get along....blahblahblah" Oh yeah...I mention no guys or guy groups here, because for the most part, women have been doing far better/cooler shit throughout the 90's. (seattle stuff is still awesome, but, somewhat tired...Pavement is incredible, but I don't want to get into dudes today.) Later, FRAN ps. can someone please tell me what "LOL!" means? and what is supposed to mean in a post, too? I can't figure these things out. Thanks. > In response to: > <<<(Fiona sucks... just my opinion).>> > << LOL! First of all, I've spent way too much money on concerts. Secondly, living in Austin, TX for the entire 90s until now, I've been fortunate to see a lot of cool bands. First show: Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love tour (Stop laughing, I was a rockin' 13-year-old, 8th grader.) Best show: Springsteen in Dallas. 4-plus-hour show. After the house lights came on and half the place had cleared out, he and the band came back on -- Bruce wearing a Santa cap -- and played "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" Absolutely unforgettable. Also, saw him at tiny Constitution Hall in DC all acoustic. Other memorable: Liz in San Diego REM twice (both from the second row) Replacements once, Westerberg once Wilco twice Pearl Jam twice Nirvana (the December before he killed himself) Sonic Youth Living Colour twice Lyle Lovett at Austin radio X-mas party Mojo Nixon at club in Austin Lollapalooza with Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ministry and more Lollapalooza with Pumpkins, Beasties, Green Day, George Clinton and P-Funk and more Also seen a bunch more folks too numerous to mention - - and some that I'm embarassed to mention, but we all have those. == Matt Schulz schulz52@yahoo.com - ----------- "I know a pretty little place in Southern California/ down San Diego way" - -- Bruce Springsteen, Rosalita _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
