Dear Alanis, I know that in your own words ' its been awhile', but i would very much like an interpretation of your timely statement as to wither it references time lapsed between performances or time spent waiting for you to begin this performance. And i know that you were probably unaware that the show was promoted as beginning at six oclock with will call pickup available at four thirty and that you were equally unaware that i arrived a five for a show that would begin at eight something, but did you know that the entire balcony section had been cordoned off for VIPs, very important pricks that probably received both comp seats (as in chairs) and comp tunes while your fan base was obliged to stand from six to eight when we were delivered from our fugue states courtesy of your special guest. Who in the hell was that guy? No one introduced him and serious elocution lessons would have been necessary for him to introduce himself. Yeah, he could burn up the frets, but he really could have used a band... This takes us up to eight forty-five, and as I'm sure you know, there's nothing like standing for long periods of time to develop enthusiasm. By this time, my brain has become as numb as my feet and my need to stay is being questioned by my need for chiropractic care. By nine twenty, just as I am beginning to understand the minds of stalkers and other victimizers of the well known, you make your appearance, and I'm sorry I wasn't as focused on you as I could have been, but I was distracted by the hundred or so people coming from the backstage area. It must have been a fine party that kept the rest of us waiting... Your performance was as outstanding as I knew it would be, which was the only reason I was out standing around inxs of four hours waiting, and it was really kind of you to stick around with us for about an hour because if you had stayed much longer the paramedics would have had to carry me out. I just thought these were things 'you oughta know'. Isn't it ironic, MrE ps-you should catch a Liz Phair show. Whereas she sings 'Fuck and Run', you seem to have adopted it as a motto. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 08:05:04 -0400 From: "Connolly, Michael EMC RSG" Subject: Early infuential bands Now that we've unearthed the Velvet Underground connection, can Big Star be far behind? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 09:32:07 -0400 From: Ben_Radlinski@CFOPUB.COM Subject: Re: another long stretch for a post I have to agree. I think it's fairly obvious. Songs like Liz's just aren't radio songs. Her melodies are pretty complex, and she rarely has that shake-yer-head-and-rock- along quality. To be popular, a song needs that one little melodic section (like the "doot doot doot, doot doot doot do doot" part of that moronic Third Eye Blind song that is still tormenting us) that people instantly recognize and can sing along to. Liz's songs just don't have that on first listen. I know she's tried to write songs for the radio before ("Never Said," "Supernova"), but she's just not a hit-factory. Not that there's anything wrong with that, by the way. My personal record: 3 2.) For anyone who wants to get Liz played on their local radio station: don't waste time with most of the dj's. I know; I was one. The evening/late night jock might play it, but it won't make it into regular rotation unless the pd (program director) or md (music director) is aware of it. This is supposed to be done by the record company rep, but hey, if you're a real fan, you'll help in any way possible. Go to your station's web site and get the e-mail address and/or name of the pd or md. Hell, forward them a copy of your faves, along with a couple of articles from Billboard, Spin, RS, whatever. Sure, they get those publications too, but what you are trying to do is show you aren't someone suggesting they include Liz on a whim; you are a serious fan who thinks including Liz in their rotation will help ratings. That's the name of the game in radio. If your station doesn't have a web site, call the receptionist. S/he's probably busy, so be polite and just ask for the person's name and direct telephone number. Don't get into a lengthy diatribe about what you want it for; get the info and get off the line. If the receptionist is uncooperative, go to your local library or serious business school (not a community college) to get the info. They will have a list of contacts for every major business in your municipality. I have found that most cc don't have the resources you'll need. Good luck with your efforts. If all else fails, remember that college and community radio is still the haven for (gulp--I'm gonna get mail!) alt-rock like our Liz. 3.) Enough to break the windows huh? ewwwwww! *stuffs cotton balls into ears* <> David, you rock! I couldn't find the words to describe Liz for some reason and the description you gave is probably why they don't play her around here. Speaking of radio play here in Orlando, I called the radio station again (fourth day in a row) at a different time to talk to a different DJ. Well, what did I get? The honest truth of why they don't play Liz: they don't have Liz at all. So, while I was listening to them and was starting to worry that Liz's cds were on their shelves collecting dust, she wasn't even there! arrrrrrgh! Oh well, at least I got the truth and I'll have to say that I really did appreciate getting it. One thing that's so strange about this whole ordeal, the guy DJs were making it sound like they had Liz and when I called this morning, I got the honest truth from (get this) a woman DJ. "I'll see if I can get that on for ya!" grrrr! So, there goes one radio listener from this station! I won't be listening to them much anymore and will be looking to see what the college radio stations play. If there's anybody on this list that lives in or near Orlando, could you please email privately with any suggestions of radio stations to check out? I listened to 99.9FM today and seem to like what they're playing. Please please don't suggest XL106.7! *blagh!* Robbie, rock on! You're so lucky to see Paula that many times! Me am jealous! Well, I don't feel like going to look up my list of concerts I've been to, cuz I've been to so many. I have a page up just for that. So, if you're interested in seeing who else I saw, go to: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Frontrow/9826/concertlist.html Go me! I was looking for soundtracks Liz appears on, but I didn't find any. Instead, I found the What's Up Matador? and Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits cds! eeeeeeeee! I couldn't believe me eyes! I couldn't skip the bargain of the Matador cd for eleven bucks! I'll have to say that the Tra La La song is really cool and now understand why some people mentioned it's a good song to dance to. When I was listening to it, I found my mother dancing along with it and couldn't believe it. One thing I noticed during the Tra La La song, there's some really weird sounds in the background during one of the choruses, sounds like a squish or the Super Marios Bros' popping. So what's up with that? Sorry to get so perceptive or whatever. Hmmmmm.... sorry for being such a long post! Thanks to everyone for sharing any Liz articles or information you can find with the list! So I clicked on the date and it says that the show has been postponed to a date tba. I don't know if this is true so everybody that was planning on going to that show, you might want to call your local Ticketmaster and see if the show is still on or try calling the Mekka as to that's where the show is at. I was really surprised I couldn't find anyone who could go with me. But I guess that's a common problem, as many of the people there were going stag. The whole experience was very surreal. Free tickets to see Liz give a great performance only about 10 feet away from me (and I got to sit this time- not like Roseland), and then they gave out copies of WCSE (the whole CD) afterwards for free! How can you possibly beat that?? There seemed to be a lot of people who weren't huge fans, and she made some remark about people probably not knowing her older stuff. And no one stayed afterwards to meet her! Except me. But she was in a rush to get to the airport. I did my duty and told her she should read the list serve, to which she replied, "What's a list serve?" and I told her it was a computer thing, so she said she has to buy a new computer b/c her baby broke hers. I don't know when the show is airing. The web site is www.sessionsatwest54th.com so you can check it out to find out what channel and time it is by you, and the schedule. However, the list that goes to the end of November does not include LIz, so who knows? And if you go to www.freetix.com, you can sign up to have them send you info on getting free tix for various things. As for sessions, if there's ever one you want to go to and you don't get on the guest list thru e-mail, chances are there will be several people on line who don't have guests, and you could ask for their extra ticket.
