Steve - nice review, you make me crave for a Liz concert even more. Still yelling and screaming to get my thoughts heard! COME TO FLORIDA LIZ! I noticed a lot of people asking for a complete collection of Liz stuff. I looked for myself and found Robbie's page to be a good one to look at. Check it out at: http://valmccown.com/albums.html I guess I'll come out of the cave and announce that I'm the one who has the import of WCSE. The bonus track is a mono version of Hurricane Cindy. It's really beautiful and I'll have to say it's another number one song, tying with Perfect World, for me. I can't get enough of listening to this song, I find myself listening to it for an hour straight and not get sick of it. I wouldn't mind making copies for people, but I'll have to say that I'm not sure what else I could put on the tape, since one song would feel quite lonely on a tape. Email me privately if interested. I also noticed that the lyrics are different from what Robbie has on his Slick Divide page. I tried following the songs and the lyrics he has on his page. I like the part where she sings: I can't stand myself, I can't stand my life. I hope everyone enjoys the recipe I put up. They're really good and I'm thinking about making more, since I practically inhaled them today! A friend of mine suggested that I'd get the recipe into Liz's hands, but have no idea how that is possible. Just imagine what she would think. I'm going to school in central Indiana and it's going to be a hell of drive but i think it will be totally worth it. and i'm sure i'm going to want to see her live again. if you really love an artist you want to see them as much as possible b/c who knows if they'll tour again. Rut ro! Still in a good mood here! I hope everyone will get a chance to pick up a copy if the New York Times newspaper today because there's a review of Liz's concert in Roseland. I wouldn't have known about this if my brother didn't hand me the paper and said: there's a review in there. I didn't know if I would trust him because he can be a big jerk sometimes, but I flipped through the paper anyway and I find a great picture of her and I screamed my lungs out. I couldn't thank him enough! Also, I'm sitting here filling out the Reader's Poll for Rolling Stone mag and I have Liz all over the place. Still doing the "eenie meanie miney moe" thing with the categories of Best Female Performer and Best Album. I have her in competition with Sheryl Crow. Darn. *goes back to the eenie meanie miney moe* Well here's what I've nominated Liz for: Artist of the Year, Rock Artist, Best Dressed (out with Marilyn Manson!), Album Cover, Most Welcome Comeback. Sigh, wouldn't it be great if she won Artist of the Year? If she wins, magazine cover and an interview! More Liz darnit! Also, something occurred to me about Liz talking about her dream from the Rosie show. When she talked about the white background, something dawned on me about the whole deal with the white background in Polyester Bride. Perhaps she's trying to let us see what she had in this dream. LOL Katie ():) the little clown in the hollow ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 11:55:29 -0400 From: Michael Yarbrough Subject: Intro/Slide Show music/Girlysound request Hi everybody-- I'm on two other lists hosted at smoe.org--the Joni Mitchell list, from which I know Jase, and the Me'Shell Ndegeocello list, of which I'm the listowner. When I saw that this list had been moved to smoe, I thought I had to check it out. I've been perusing the archives and thought I should throw my two cents in on a couple of threads. First my favorite musical artists: Joni Mitchell, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Madonna, Bjork, Liz (duh), R.E.M., Radiohead, Belle and Sebastian, the Who, Lauryn Hill/Wyclef Jean/the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott, Bahamadia, Public Enemy, Pet Shop Boys, Roni Size, Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, D'Angelo, Dionne Farris, Prince/the Artist, Chaka Khan, Big Star, Portishead, Elliott Smith, Richard and Linda Thompson, Dolly Parton, the Roches, etc. etc. etc. So I have very broad tastes with a serious bias towards soul/R&B... Which brings me to the thread about the songs played during the slide show. I noticed y'all identified all but one. The remaining one is "Hopeless" by Dionne Farris, which appears on the _Love Jones_ soundtrack. I highly recommend this album--this cut as well as choice tracks from Lauryn Hill, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and Cassandra Wilson make it well worth your time. And from looking at some of your favorites lists, a little soul wouldn't hurt cha'... ;-) So the official list is: Iggy Pop, "Lust for Life" Violent Femmes, "Kiss Off" Prince, "Little Red Corvette" Madonna, "Ray of Light" Lyle Lovett, "Private Conversation" Dionne Farris, "Hopeless" Katell Keineg, "One Hell of a Life" BTW, Dionne Farris used to be part of Arrested Development, and sang on their hit, "Tennessee." She also had a hit off her solo debut _Wild Seed Wild Flower_ (another great album) with "I Know." Finally, I would love to trade for a copy of the Girlysound tapes and any other rarities/live performances of Liz anyone has. Trade only; I don't intend to profit bootleggers. I have lots of great stuff to trade, including Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Nirvana, the Who, Madonna, the Beatles. For Belle and Sebastian fans, I have a tape copy of their very rare first album, _Tigermilk_, as well as some live stuff for them. (i was wearing super highheels and a white fringy shawl as a skirt and i had bright red hair--- did anyone see me???) anyways, we were singing and dancing and jumping around and everyone else was like standing still and looking catatonic or drinking beer. a couple times bitchy short women yelled at me to get out of their way and lots of people gave me dirty looks while i was dancing and just happened to touch them... i mean it's a CONCERT, people... you're not in your room listening to her cd. anyway, i got my tickets from ticketmaster so i had to wait on that LONG ASS line and missed her first two songs and nearly had a heart attack. but my friends and i managed to squeeze our way pretty close to the front... and i could've SWORN that liz was looking right at me during the first chorus of white chocolate space egg. when liz asked what we wanted her to do, me and my friend sophie yelled "Take off your clothes!" it was pretty exciting that the show was sold out. i sold my extra ticket that i had bought for my boyfriend as a birthday present before we broke up to a scalper for 20$. haha. sorry if this post sounds extremely unintelligent but i just woke up and now have to go all the way back to my dorm lalalove, jennnn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 12:48:54 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: A few things... Michael Worrell asked: >What items of Liz Phair's work is still plausibly (meaning I don't >have to visit Darkest Peru to find it) available on the commercial market, >and what's the best route towards acquiring a complete collection? Here's a list of what I know is readily available commercially: ALBUMS: Exile in Guyville (1993, Matador Records) Whip-Smart (1994, Matador/Atlantic; reissued in 1996, Matador/Capitol) whitechocolatespaceegg (1998, Matador/Capitol) SINGLES and EPs: Supernova (1994, Matador Records) Juvenilia (1995, Matador Records) SOUNDTRACKS: Higher Learning (1994, Epic Soundtrax/Sony) Amateur (1995, Matador Records) Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996, Matador Records) Stealing Beauty (1996, Capitol Records) First Love, Last Rites (1998, Epic/Sony Music Soundtrax) COMPILATIONS: Saturday Morning (Cartoons' Greatest Hits) (1995, MCA Records) What's Up Matador (1997, Matador Records) All of the above should be fairly easy to find in most record stores; if not, the stores should have no problem ordering them for you. Another option is to order online from CDNow or Music Blvd., which I believe both carry all of the above items. A little harder to find is the _Get Yer La-la's Out!: The Minty Fresh Singles Anthology_ compilation, which is a Japanese import and features the now out-of-print "Carnivore" single. A few people have mentioned a vinyl single for "Polyester Bride" on the list recently that contains the otherwise unavailable "Greased Lightning." This release is a promotional one by Capitol Records, and is intended for jukeboxes only, so finding a copy could prove to be difficult. Hopefully "Greased Lightning" will turn up on a commercially available single at some point, as well as "Freak of Nature," which it was said at one point would emerge as a b-side as well. There are many out-of-print compilations that Liz has been featured on as well, and I will try to compile a list of those later. If you look hard enough, you may be able to track down used copies of these. Also, there are a great number of promotional singles and releases, which you can find a complete listing of on Ken Lee's excellent Mesmerizing website. For anyone who's interested in collecting Liz's videos, the one for "Jealousy" can be found on the _What's Up Matador_ video release, and the clip for "Rocket Boy" is available on the video release of the film _Stealing Beauty_. >Secondly, someone mentioned #WCSE a bit ago. If someone in the know >doesn't mind to tell me, on what IRC network is this? This is a channel a few of us from the list started back in July on EFnet. You can usually find at least a couple of us on there most evenings, and it would be great if more people were interested in checking it out. So, please, anyone who's interested, please feel free to join us sometime. *** A little while ago, one of our list members, Tiffany Wilson, mentioned her radio show on the list and gave us the URL to check it out in RealAudio. Last night I decided to tune in, and her show was just excellent. I really enjoyed listening, and, overwhelmed by the fact that I recognized all of the songs she was playing, that I was hearing so much of the music I enjoy, I decided to give Tiffany a call on the request line. It was really great chatting with her for a few minutes, and Tiffany, I really do have to thank you for playing "Nashville" for me (and it definitely was a more than acceptable alternative to "6'1"," no worries there!). Part of what prompted me to call was that Tiffany played "Infidel," one of the Ashtray Boy songs that Liz sings on, early in her show. I was really quite happy and surprised to hear it. Anyway, if anyone wants to check out her show, I really encourage you to. She plays some really great bands, and for all those who have said in the past that you've never been able to hear Liz on the radio before, here's your chance to. :) The URL is , and Tiffany's show is on early Monday morning at 1:00 am - 3:00 am. (Hope you don't mind this, Tiffany -- I just think a lot of list members might enjoy checking the show out!) Also, I'm still working on updating the mailing list website. I know I've already asked once, but if anyone has a Liz website that isn't currently listed on the 'Links' page, could you please send me your URL so I can add it? I haven't received any as of yet, and I know that there are quite a few new Liz sites on the web. I'd like to be able to include links to as many as possible, so please send me your URL if you maintain a Liz or Liz-related site. One last thing, and I've been meaning to say this for a while, I really think the idea Jacob suggested for the congratulatory card for Liz is a good one. I'm really interested in being a part of it, and if there's any way that I could help out at all, please let me know. Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadian list members! And this is why: if you didn't happen to see the August issue of "Pulse" (Tower Record's magazine), Liz was the cover story. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth interviewed her. Here's an excerpt: Kim: What music do you like that you want to listen to over and over again? Liz: Last night I was watching the Box and "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" came on. This is how bad I am... So anyway, I had read that article and that little item totally stuck in my mind and made me laugh whenever I thought of it. And then Rosie & Liz came back from commercial and Rosie said Liz was "really, really wants to" dance to it... it was perfect. Yeah - by the way, Liz looked VERY strange on the cover of Pulse - her hair was crimped and pulled back in such a way that her forehead looked enlarged... and then she was wearing skimpy hot pink and black clothes and 80s makeup (garish eyeshadow, pink lipstick) - but though her getup was weird and not too flattering, she was still mesmerizing... I email all my friends in other cities when I hear she's coming there from this list, but alas no good news for me. Concert Review Renaissance Phair The grownup grrrl-rocker returns with her best music yet by Mark Bautz Although Liz Phair's new album, "whitechocolatespaceegg" (Matador/Capitol), is languishing at No. 156 on the Billboard chart and her tentative "Tonight Show" appearance last week caused one Capital Records insider to crack, "It sure didn't win her any new fans," the singer proved Thursday night why she's a critics' darling and one of the most celebrated alt-rock performers of the '90s. Backed by a tight four-piece band at her sold-out New York City concert, Phair alternated such uptempo favorites as "F--- and Run" with the quieter, more textured tunes ("Perfect World") that make up her latest, and best, album. It was as if rock had suddenly grown up: In a long slinky skirt, Phair, a svelte new mom, looked as if she had stepped out of Vogue. Her band members all wore suits, and her backup singer was dressed as if for a high-powered Hollywood cocktail party. Phair even joked that she was "about to go Celine" before beginning a ballad. Her past angry arrogance was replaced by a charming on-stage maturity. Mid-set, Phair stopped and said, "I feel so lucky that you all came out to see me," and it was clear that she meant it. Most grownup, though, was the new music. While "Stratford-On-Guy" and other hits from Phair's career-making 1993 debut, "Exile in Guyville," won cheers, "Polyester Bride," "Uncle Alvarez," and other recent songs were musically more complex and lyrically more generous. Phair, who is notoriously performance shy, even seemed more comfortable singing them. As other thirtysomething rockers struggle to grow as musicians and human beings (Courtney, are you there?) it's a treat to see one who is managing to keep her potency even as she evolves. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 18:05:53 -0400 From: "Valerie J.
