Had to comment on this one. I never realized how important the closing of an album could be until I heard EIG. Going through my music collection after reading this I was struck that some of my favorite albums end on drawn out guitar work after the words stop, or at least end on intensive and emotional guitar parts even with words. I really think this is the way to end an album. However, W-S and WCSE broke from this form. I just noticed last time listening to EIG that the end of Strange Loop? really segues well back into the opening of 6'1". The rhythm is so similar between the two that it's perhaps the most natural song progression on the whole album. Liz must be devious - she wants us to keep playing it over and over - I for one have taken the bait. BTW, adding to the video debate, I just saw the Stratford-on-Guy video and I think it's her best by a good margin. It's kind of what I expected, but I love the still-shot, photo-booth, Liz-with-toy-plane part. Its much more normal-MTV video I think than indie-star rapid-fire images. Still compiling my favorite moments list, but someone took my EIG CD without asking! Arggghhhhh. Someone knows how to make me cranky. Liz's "What's that song?" yesterday was in response to "What's the best seduction song?" Liz's answer (I didn't even come close to getting it, the clip was like 4 seconds long): Marvin Gaye, "Sexual Healing". She is an Irish singer/songwriter and apparently very good with a guitar. The clips of her songs sounded really interesting - not Liz Phair-ish, but obviously influenced by the same 70s classic-rock period. Without further ado (and in no particular order)... Pavement, The Pixies, Aimee Mann, Joni Mitchell, Elliott Smith, Helium, Hole, Beck, Velvet Underground, Amy Rigby, Sleater-Kinney, X, Radiohead, The Beatles, Jules Shear, Bettie Serveert, Ramones, Fleetwood Mac, Cold Cold Hearts, Matthew Sweet, PJ Harvey, The Geraldine Fibbers, Sonic Youth, The Clash, Blondie, Beastie Boys, Patti Smith, Ben Lee, Violent Femmes, Veruca Salt, The Breeders, The Pretenders, Bikini Kill, Big Star, R.E.M., Garbage, X-Ray Spex, Sheryl Crow, Nirvana, Lemonheads, Belle & Sebastian, The Go-Go's... Also, one other artist whose music I really love and wanted to make special mention of is Jen Trynin. I know I've praised her many times before on the list, but I cannot recommend her music enough. Liz's _Exile in Guyville_ may be my favorite album of all-time, but Jen's _Gun Shy Trigger Happy_ isn't far behind, which is saying a lot. I do read the digests in word, but for some reason, some of them don't seem to make it. anyway - Liz rocked last night! she was absolutely amazing - I was in awe. It was very crowded and squishy, we were pretty close, but not close enough. I had a very hard time seeing. Of course a really tall guy and his girlfriend squished their way in front of us, and me being 5' tall, could barely see around them. Especially because they were nuzzling each other all night. yuck. Also, in the middle of Uncle Alverez, a girl and a man almost got in a fist fight over the girls singing too loud (or something like that). I didn't expect a fight at a liz phair show. I wasn't too keen on the slide show, my friend commented "it was like looking through someones family photo album of people you don't know." I didn't see why we needed to go through the slides twice. I did like the music though. anyway, it didn't take away from a perfect show. she was so comfortable on stage and so cute dancing around and did a lot of talking. She also said something so funny - she mentioned something about the clinton stuff and my friend said "oh no, no politics" just as liz said "don't you hate when people on stage banter about politics" or something like that. my only complaint was that it was too short. and I was too short. It was an AMAZING show. Better than anything I could have dreamed of, but the security guards and bartenders really annoyed me. My fiance' and I ran right to the stage w/out stopping. We literally ran. 2 guards yelled @ us, but we wound up being right up front and since I'm only 5'1'', that was a HUGE advantage. Well, regardless, we didn't stop to take poster like everyone else did. But that was okay 'cause I figured I'd just buy a t-shirt after the show. Well, show ends and what does the security guard do? They manage to make us act like complete fools in an attempt to get pics (one of which I got), Liz's water bottles, and the play list. The guard charged some guy and undisclosed amount for Liz's play list. That pissed me off, but not nearly enough as when I realized that the only 3 remaining Liz posters were behind the bar. Well, I batted my eye-lids and went in for the kill. No luck. One was reserved and the other two would cost me $20 each. So, I figured, fuck em, I'll just go buy a shirt. Too bad the shirts all SUCKED! The Liz shirts I've made are much better than that. So, I crawled back to the bar tenders, but one agreed to give me it for $10. So I bought it. But the old SOB made and extra $10 for nothing. That really pissed me off. Oh, BTW: are there any list members out there who joined us waiting outside for Liz after the show? I kept looking @ different people and wondering if they were from the list. FYI for anyone who wasn't there, Liz shafted us. We waited for 2 hours and she just ran to the car. It happened by accident for me, and I rode it for awhile, but I didn't take that bull by the horns and I didn't know if I wanted to do it." That quote reminds me of the line where Liz says in "Strang Loop," "but I only wanted more than I knew." She didn't "get" her success back when it first happened because she never really knew she wanted it, and now she knows that she does, sees what she almost tossed away. I think its something that will become more and more apparent as time goes on. No wonder everyone in Chicago's guyville turned on her. Here's someone who's never done anything musically professionally, never worked for years in dives, never made any sacrifices waltzing in and snagging a record deal. It doesn't really matter how good her stuff is from that perspective. It's just not fair. And worst of all, she just doesn't seem to care or want it all that much. But that's just how it goes for some. Luckily for her, she's starting to see how incredible what happened was--as well as how lucky in a way it was that she didn't care. That was how she avoided getting swallowed up by her success, turning into someone else completely. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Oct 1998 21:00:59 -0500 From: Kaufmann@IPFW.EDU (Kaufmann,Mike) Subject: the different angle on fuck and run I forgot to put this in the last post. I've always seen fuck and run slightly differently than simply a one night stand. I think it's slightly more complicated than that. It's a "repeat" one night stand, or rather a one night stand with an old flame. Liz has this great story about an old beau: "a boyfriend who dropped me for his previous girlfriend came slithering back once. I ran into him at a bar, and he was drunk and throwing out reasons why I should take him back, like "You're gonna die old and tired and alone" -- really persuasive stuff like that. Anyway, he begged to come home with me, and -- my friends are appalled to this day -- I said fine. We didn't sleep together; I just let him stay there, and he ended up barfing all over my bathroom. I cleaned it all up -- something I'd never done for anyone before -- and I think it was kind of humiliating for him: first rejection, then projectile"(Details Feb 98). I think a more sanitary version of this is something like what's going on in "Fuck and Run." In other words, when she says "I didn't think this would happen again," it's not that she didn't think there would ever be another one night stand again, though that might be part of it. It's more that this wouldn't happen again with this particular guy--which is even worse than a one night stand. Here she's humiliated herself by sleeping with this guy she thought she'd never sleep with again, who'd dumped her earlier, and now that he's awake once again, he's going to do the same thing all over again. The song comes from that moment she wakes up in his arms "alarmed" and, in a cold sweat, suddenly realizes what's happened and wha's about to happen--that she'll hear him already getting ready to take off, pleading "a lot of work to do." It confirm the immediate misgivings she feels when she awakes: I've gone and humiliated myself for this guy who doesn't care for me and I don't care for and I promised myself it wouldn't ever even happen again. That's much worse than a one night stand where at you don't know someone and will likely never see them again. At least it's a stranger. In this view, it's someone she's known and been involved with before, been hurt by before and now has set herself up again and been hurt all over before she even knew what hit her. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Oct 98 22:03:48 From: "Stacey Wirt" Subject: ms. phair of course hey all! First of all I keep reading all this stuff about liz's PB single - is this only going to be released on vinyl, or is there going to be a cd version too? Second, I forgot to mention this last time I posted about the 9:30 club show, but at one point, liz was talking about the slides. She said that "Henry was in there" - i.e. henry from polyester bride. She wouldn't tell us which picture though. Just thought I'd mention that for anyone who might want to guess as to who henry is. And I just saw liz on the rosie show, That was an extreme test of my devotion for liz - The Olsen twins?!?!?!?! I had to keep fighting the urge to change the channel. The one thing that stuck in my head was why on earth is liz doing this show?? She seemed a little out of place. However, I did appreiciate the time (however minescule) that Rosie devoted to interviewing liz. I just wish it was LONGER!!! They only spent about one minute for liz and then the damn show ended. oh well, I'm just waiting for the 120 minutes thing. That'll probably be better. -Stacey ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Oct 1998 23:30:57 EDT From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: Liz on Rosie! OMG! Is there anyone on this list that thinks this is one of Liz's best appearances on tv yet?! I absolutely loved it! Like I said before, I love it when Rosie gets musical guests on her show cuz she always talks to them afterwards. My thoughts of Liz is totally out of words right now cuz I thought for sure that my VCR wouldn't work. But thank goodness it worked this time! I thought Liz looked fabulous, feeling very comfortable. When she made eye contact with the camera, I just couldn't help but laugh cuz it seemed like she was playing a joke with us or something. The props were really weird and I wonder if it was her idea. (anyone for cake right now?) When the music started, my breath was taken away when they had a really cool closeup shot of her playing the guitar. For no particular reason, some thought came into my head that Liz would turn her head and watch the video playing in the background screen, but I knew of course she wouldn't comment anything about it like if she was at her own show. sigh. I noticed she did the radio version of the song and that ticked me off, but then again, with the video playing in the background, that's probably why. Her talk with Rosie was great, she sounds like a very sweet person when she talked about her son and I'm happy to know that she's happy. Best of luck to Liz! Did anyone come across with technical problems with the show? When I was watching it, I had a black screen for about two minutes and then I see Liz and Rosie dancing around, goes black again. Then it comes on with more commercials, Liz talking to Rosie and then they dance. ...Geez! What's the problem here?! So, what did everybody think of Liz dancing around? I'm kinda upset that they just HAD to show people from the audience and they were so consumed on seeing their faces on the tv screens above them than watching what was going on the stage! GEEZ! If I had been there, I'd be on my feet dancing along! I would love to know if there was at least one Phair fan in the audience. A couple of people have already asked me if I have extra tickets, but unfortunately I don't -- mine have been claimed for a while now. If anyone on the list does have any extras, I know it would be greatly appreciated if you were to help out those who are looking. Just let me know if you have tickets to spare, and I will put you in touch with those who need them. Also, I do know of quite a few people from the list who are going to the Toronto show, but if anyone else is planning to attend but hasn't spoken up yet and would like to meet up with the rest of us, please let me know. We are planning on meeting up before the show and also hanging out for a while afterwards, and would love to have as many people as possible join us. Drop me a note if you would like to meet up, and hopefully we can all co-ordinate some sort of definite plan this coming week. Also, I do have to say that Liz's appearance on Rosie O'Donnell's show today was really great, probably the best one yet. Liz seemed really comfortable during both her performance and the interview; she was definitely more at ease than she was during her other recent television appearances. I know a couple of people have asked "Why Rosie's show?" Really, though, I think this was a great show for Liz to appear on. I imagine a large percentage of Rosie's viewership have no idea who Liz Phair is, so it does help to get her music out to an audience that might not hear it otherwise. And I will admit, although I would have liked to have seen Liz perform a different song this time, "Polyester Bride" was a good choice for this particular show. Also, this is one show where Liz would have the opportunity to be interviewed in addition to performing, and Liz is quite engaging in interviews. She comes across really well, and that might help to further spark the audience's curiosity. Besides, Liz's upcoming '120 Minutes' appearance is geared more towards what one would expect her audience to be; this one gave her a chance to reach a lot of people she might not have otherwise.
