Well, one of the voices - this really anal-retentive lady, I think - is talking mandarin Chinese. And even though I totally can't even answer the phone in mandarin anymore, it WAS my first language, so that freakin' Chinese lady is the only voice I really hear - my ear just picks it out. (the songs where she didn't play guitar are noted with an NG) Explain It To Me 6'1" Cinco de Mayo Support System (NG) Never Said Johnny Feelgood Dance Of The Seven Veils Uncle Alvarez Polyester Bride Supernova Flower Big Tall Man Mesmerizing (NG) Divorce Song White Chocolate Space Egg What Makes You Happy (NG) Encore - ------- Perfect World Stratford-On-Guy Fuck and Run i also tried to take down the songs played during the slide show, but the only ones i knew the titles of were "lust for life" by iggy pop, "kiss off" by the violent femmes, and madonna's "ray of light". if anyone else can fill in the blanks for the rest of them that would be cool. oh, btw, i guess it had mixed reaction here, but i thought the whole slide show thing was SOOOOO cool ! especially seeing like those early photo booth pictures with like her and brad wood and casey rice. it kinda made me think that back then, when they were making exile it was just like a bunch of kids, having fun, goofing around and making a record they thought would sell a few thousand copies. it's like back then, they never thought they were doing something that would end up THAT big...they couldn't know that what they were doing and the music they were making would actually have like an impact on people's lives...but sure enough, it did. and like 5 years later it was just really interesting for me to see all those old pictures and stuff and think about all that, y'know ? uh, but enough of my 5-cent philsophical digression...on with the show ! :) i thought the concert was FANTASTIC, and that's not just the biased me talking cos i think i was a bit disappointed at lilith fair and wasn't afraid to say it ! but tonight...God, tonight like EVERYTHING was working...the band was tight and sounded great, everyone was having fun on stage, the crowd was into it and the best part was liz herself ! she was just SOOOO comfortable and cool on stage. she was seductively dancing and playing with her dress and hair during "flower," jawing with the crowd, took her shoes off during "what makes you happy" and was just dancing and going CRAZY (kinda like i was), but it was just really cute...it looked like the "tra-la-la" video or something :) but it's not just like her standing in front of a mic with just her guitar and a warbly voice anymore, y'know ? she just has a real PRESENCE on stage now, and it was SOOOOO awesome and fun to see that :) it was also GREAT seeing so many people from the list too ! i spent most of my time with steve (who gave the liz the "goat sign" during mesmerizing only to have her give him a wicked smile back and do the goat sign back to him...that was awesome), julia rios (who forever will be affectionately refered to by me as "the girl with the wings"), her pal jeremy (who asked oh-so-politely asked once of the bouncers "will liz be SIGNING tonight ?") and david perry (who printed up some great support system digest signs...how's that for list unity ? but unfortunately i don't think liz saw any of our attempts to hold them up). and i also got the chance to say hi to a few more of you including the ever-elusive megan brown, who i go to school with, but for some reason this is the first time i ever met her :) but it was just GREAT to see so many of you there...everyone was so cool and nice and i just really enjoyed the whole night. but the BEST part was that after the show was over ! we had kinda staked out the back of the club trying to get to see liz and after we waited around next to some obnoxious, half-drunk "frat boy" types (oh, what concert experience would be complete without them ?) for a while, we ended up running all the way back to the front to try and catch up to her, and then after a helpful hint from her guitarist, ran like down south street and across the street and found her right before she got in her tour bus ! there were like 10-15 people there (including a couple that must have been in their 60s !) and she actually signed a few things for people...including my Exile CD cover !!! AAAAAGGGGHHHHH :) i guess, i wouldn't really say i "met" her since there wasn't much like actual conversation going on. steve mentioned something about the goat sign thing while she was signing for him and said "ha...goat sign" and then while she was signing my mine i asked if she had gotten this package i had left for her there in the afternoon and she said "aw, i'm sure i did...but i didn't open it, they send me all that stuff later on" so that was pretty much the extent of the conversation, but still the whole experience was like AMAZING for me :) and when i looked at that Exile cover with her signature on it i was like SOOOOO happy...i gotta frame it or something :) but anyway, i had an awesome night and am still on cloud nine and probably still will be for the next few weeks :) okay, it's late so i'm gonna go now...see you guys ! matt http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~george2/music/liz ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Oct 1998 07:36:45 -0400 From: Ben_Radlinski@CFOPUB.COM Subject: Re: chinese liz moment There's some Russian at the end of Shane as well. The part when she is singing "I keep on pushing harder....etc.." is perfect, the way the old movie clips are spliced in...gives me goosebumps..like she really doesn't want to get married and live a life like that...all the heartache and sometimes bullshit that goes along with marriage, or any long term-serious commitment type relationship. just curious if anyone is familiar with the story of PRINCE RASSELAS...it is soooo much like Polyester Bride...about a Prince who lives in a place called "Happy Valley" or something like that where everything is perfect and he has all the material things he needs (alligator cowboy boots, I'm sure) but he just wants to run away and live his life, so some guy figures he'll build him a pair of WINGs so he can "Fly away" over the walls of the castle and live the way he wants..he is constantly asking his teacher for advice too, about life,etc...(much like Henry the certain bartender...) I don't know...just the "flap your wings and fly away from here" and the entire stories really sound extremely similiar... anyway, as for Liz Phair's videos...I really think they have a unique sense of humor, a total flavor of their own...okay, the Tra La La song really leaves something to be desired, but it's fun...as for STRATFORD-On-GUY = i think this video is PERFECT for the song...captures the feel exactly...WHIP-Smart is just hilarious as hell....Supernova is kinda kooky...but god bless the damn thing! JEALOUSY is actually a job well done - good going Liz! I was shocked to think I was hearing Whip Smart, that I dropped the remote controller. So, here's my question I thought that would be quite interesting. Came to me when a lot of people mentioned about dancing along with Liz's songs. So, here it is: List your top 10 fave songs you know you'll most definitely dance along with, to be on the nice side, I'll settle a compromise and you can list 15. ();) Here's my list, in no particular order, except for the top three most definitely! 1. Big Tall Man - I almost ran into the wall dancing to this one. 2. Jealousy - the opening drums and guitar, how could you stay put in your seats? 3. Supernova - a great song to make yourself look like an idiot when your blasting this in your car. Believe me, I do it all the time! The others: Help Me Mary - every time she says "pitbull," always gets me going Baby Got Going - "silky underwear" I don't know why, but this one cracks me up when she mentions the underwear and the conductor and the "roll roll" is enough to get you going Support System - the whistling makes me feel like one of those Seven Dwarfs Whip Smart - the chorus 6'1" - hmmmmm, not sure, but I do dance to it! Ride - the funky sound it has Turning Japanese - the fact that it's fast is enough to get your heart rate moving Johnny Sunshine - fast, then slows down I'll be looking forward to seeing everybody's list. Have fun! Another thing, if you're going to look at the influences link I gave, it takes a while for it to load because the size of it is 4MB. It's worth the wait because it's the whole entire commercial of just Liz. I'd love to rave about it, but I'd rather wait! Katie ():) Rosie O'Donnell tomorrow!
