I was also really lucky timing-wise, because I'd just gotten to know and love Exile when I noticed that Liz would be playing a concert in SF just a few weeks later, and managed to get tickets for the show. I dragged along my wife, who knew nothing of LP's music but almost instantly became a fan (yay!). Anyway, that's just a little background. As to Katie's specific question, well, no, I haven't read the book yet, but the San Francisco Bay Guardian reviewed it last week and really loved it. That said, however, they took pains to explain that the book really isn't about Liz Phair -- it was _supposed_ to be about her, but Camden Joy (the author) apparently took the assignment as a springboard to ruminate at great length about rock and roll and the world in general. So apparently it ends up being a book less about Liz Phair and much more about other things. However, it's still supposed to be pretty good. I've been trying to find a copy locally, and have also found that no one but Amazon seems to have it yet. Interestingly, as of early last week, even Amazon was listing it as "4-6 weeks delivery time" although I noticed last night that it was now available immediately. So it may just be that whoever published it hasn't gotten their act totally together in terms of delivering it to Ingram and the other major suppliers. Anyway, I'll try to dig up the Guardian review and post it to the list. I expect I'll try for another couple of days to find it locally, and then give up and score a copy from Amazon. John, really happy to have found this list and so many other wonderful LP fans! P.S. I came on just after the SF concert, so I don't know if anyone has already posted a review/set list to this list. If not, and if anyone would like 'em, just let me know.... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 02:57:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Sara MacKinnon Subject: Re: support-system-digest V1 #32 Hey all. A few things- first, I have given like three different people the mission of taping the WBCN broadcast, so if anyone needs a copy, let me know. Second - I have had a lot of random Liz experiences lately. I bought the November Issue of "US" because I am in love with Vince Vaughn and guess who appears in an ad in the back? (Wouldn't the question be a little stupid if it wasn't liz?) It's an ad for rollingstone.com video archive or something and it's just a photo of her. Plus there's a quote from Liz on the final "loose talk" page. It says: "I'm really excited [about] Viagra. If older men are getting a lot of sex and they feel really good about their erections, I have the feeling the world will be a nicer place." PLus in my school paper there was a book review, and I don't remember the title of the book, but it was some "female-artists-in-their-own-words" kind of thing. Liz wasn't mentioned in the article, but she definitely appeared on the cover of the book. Ani is in it as well, but she was mentioned in the article. I think I am finished now. -Sara No, I lied. I am not finished. I forget to say that "pahk the cah" is a general Boston reference to the townie accent most of us are blessed with. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 03:14:47 EDT From: Juvenilia@aol.com Subject: Paula Cole, Liz Phair, & My Mom Hey peeps.... I just made my mom watch a Liz Phair video compilation I created over time from various performances and videos on TV. We watched her appearance on "Squirt TV" and then some videos and other performances. Finally, we got to her latest appearance on Jay Leno and my mom made the statement that she thought Liz looked much more like a woman on Leno than her previous appearances where my mother felt Liz looked more like a teenager. I thought it was interesting to hear my mother's opinions on my all-time favorite singer. She used to abhor Liz. I guess her music was just too 'different' than anything my mom has ever listened to. But on her 43rd birthday, I bought her a copy of 'whitechocolatespaceegg' and she liked it.... let me tell she liked it (sorry, I had too). It's on current rotation on her CD player. Heh heh. But in reponse once again to Katie, I LOVE PAULA COLE! I've seen her three times and one of them being at the 9:30 Club in D.C. where Liz is performing tomorrow. That same concert was taped by HBO and shown recently on their program, "Reverb". It's weird to see yourself watching a concert on a premium cable channel, let me tell you. As far as my favorite Liz musical moments, I would have to say the very beginning of "Nashville"... the very ending of "Mesmerizing" (I still am unclear whether that's a dog in the background or someone using a rock onto a gravel-like surface... thoughts? Comments?). I also love the chorus to "Whip- Smart" on GirlySounds.... ".When they do the double-dutch-double-dutch....they stand tensies..." What else? I love the very ending of "White Chocolate Space Egg". I love the way her voice is so soft and high at the end. So, I guess I like the beginning, ending and choruses of her songs. Hell, it's hard to narrow shit like that down. I just love Liz. Well, enough of my rantings.... Recently GLR in London played Liz's version followed by a Vapours track as one of their "covers" features. Knowing what it's about also makes it even funnier when covered by Liz AND to the person who had Neutral Milk Hotel and Wilco in their faves list, Will you marry me?, this goes double if it was a girl (sorry deleted the digest so i can't remember who it was). Maybe these were recorded at the same time (my CDs are still packed - don't have them available to check.) And when a collaboration between two dissimilar musicians/artists/groups takes place, often covers are initially played, since they usually don't have time yet to produce new material (Hindu Love Gods is a good example -- Warren Zevon and 2/3s of REM. These were the practice sessions for a couple of new(at the time) Zevon songs that were later released.) . So these seem to me to be the beginning of a collaboration between Liz and MI, but was dissolved when their lead singer (who's name escape me right now - sorry) committed suicide. Unless it changes course mid stream, the book has NOTHING to do with Liz Phair. The opening premise is that the author is commissed to write a "Whatever happened to..." book on Liz Phair. t doesn't matter that he has no idea who she is, or what songs she sang, because "no one reads those kinds of books." Thus, he begins to ramble on about his life, and when he started into details of a former love affair, I got disinterested and put the book down. Which is not to say the book isn't interesting, it is; just that its opening premise was that he can sucker someone into reading the book just because Liz's name is on it. It's amazing to me how afraid we are to be unhip sometimes. I've been guilty of it many times. Amazing how repressed I was as a pre-teen and teenager to not fully admit that I liked...some Duran Duran songs! Other "unhip" vices: - -- Elton John & Billy Joel - -- "Walk Away Renee" (the Left Banke -- one of the most wussified, but passionate songs of all time, it was written by a teenager who was in love with another member of the band's girlfriend) - -- "Build Me Up Buttercup" (yes, I liked it before it was featured in "There's Something About Mary") - -- what seems to be about 80% of all the songs you can name between 1980 - 1984 or so (yes, it was a lot of cheese, but it was OUR cheese, damn it) - -- the band America (a recent addition to my unhip collection -- maybe I'm getting older and a bit dodgier, but their songs were really well-produced (not something I normally enjoy, but shit man, it was George Martin producing them)) - -- Abba (or are they considered hip now?...not all of it, but you can't argue with about a dozen of their songs) - -- anyone remember Tracey Ullman's single "They Don't Know?" - -- finally, I never realized how big a Madonna fan I was until recently. Either her overall saturation of the past 14 years has brainwashed me, or she's written some VERY catchy songs OK, perhaps I've poisoned the list a bit. Anyone else? The sound of the snare all over "Guyville" reminds me of Charlie Watts' sound on the Stones' "Parachute Woman," and that's about the best sound of drums my ears have heard. As for her guitar...sigh...my brother used to be a big guitar fan of the 80's maestros (Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, a host of others). I don't know, but it sounds to me like they chose all the wrong notes to play, and Liz chose all the right ones. Liz mentioned she hadn't really understood the difference between her and the other artists on the Lilith Fair tour until she played on the tour. Outside of the obvious lyrical content, I think a major difference is that she's FUNKY...there's a subtle rhythm in her voice or the bass line or something. Just a couple of vocal moments 'cause I can't resist: - -- "there's a silence, and she said..." transition from "What Makes You Happy" - -- "fire up the bat-mo-bile / because I gotta get outta here" Aahhh, there's too many. I'm sure by the time I post this, many will have noted that "Polyester Bride" was played again on 120 Minutes last night (actually this morning, 1:00 am EDT). Only the 2nd time I've seen it. Unless I misunderstood, did the host say something about having Liz on as a guest in the coming weeks...? Hope someone else heard this too and can clarify! Naomi, "Slow Dog" is probably my favorite song on Belly's "Star" too! Katie, you don't *really* think Liz will be doing "Fuck and Run" on Rosie O'Donnell, do you? (An EIG song on her WCSE promotion tour, and on daytime TV, no less? If only we lived in such a world...) I just loved Eric's variations on the Backstreet Boys' name - hee hee hee! Lucas, I'm curious as to what a "sweater" flavor is? Referring to 50s-style tight sweaters? Or did you mean "sweeter?" We may have grounds for many furball jokes here... ;^) I would also LOVE to hear if anyone has done the EIG/Exile on Main Street song-by-song comparison! In response to Jeff Dorion's new thread, here's a short list of some of my favorite Liz musical moments: the guitar line behind "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (I just love this song, but haven't seen anyone else mention it as a Liz fave; I think it's so sly, a giant wink); the hollow wail at the end of "Shatter;" the feedback ending of "Chopsticks," segueing into the opening notes of "Supernova" - makes me literally hold my breath and then slams me down VERY pleasantly, like a rollercoaster (or something *else*); the weird, funky background noises on "Whip-Smart;" Liz's fingers squeaking against the strings in many songs. I'd better stop now! Thanks for listening... Brad Brad Brad *Brad Wood*!!!!!!" oi. cool cool that he posted... anyhoo, not overly Liz-realated, but that idea about Liz hearing Turning Japanese in her formative years and having it stick... (even funnier if it IS about masturbation) but i remember being 7 or so and Steve Miller Band's Abracadabra, and i just loved that song, totally 'unappropriate' for my little ears, what with "i wanna reach out and grab ya" and copious sex refs. but i just loved it. that and Blondie's Atomic and those crazy aliens eating the Mercurys and Subarus "and now they only eat guitars" craaaaaaaacked me up to whomever commented on She Bop--i just clued into that a couple years ago too and i thunk "Cindy is a cool chick." geez, you are all going to think i'm some kinda sex fiend after this post, but one more random and unfortunately un-Liz comment. Green Day's Dookie is 100% about smokin dope and playin wit yer pecker. tee hee. forgot to put them on my list... later ;) Melba _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Most importantly, though, they mentioned that Liz would be joining them in the 120 Minutes studio in a few weeks. I don't know when it will be, but generally the show is partially devoted to one artist whenever they come in - - that usually means an interview, helping host the show, showing one video and clips of others, and sometimes playing a live song. If she does play live, this is your chance to see something other than Polyester Bride. Since that's her current video, that's what they'll play, and they never play the same song live. I'm crossing my fingers. Any hopes on what they would play other than PB? >>I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of the top-ten songs list and >>other favorite artists. So, here's a new question for you all. >>What are your favorite Liz moments MUSICALLY? What are those musical >>touches in Ms. Phair's songs that send shivers up your spine? I like this poll. I'm going to go through all of her songs and pick out my favorites, but here are a few off the top of my head: entire song Shatter intro to 6'1" chorus of Gunshy entire song Nashville very short solo of Supernova ending to Shane solo on studio version of Russian Girl Colin O'Connor University of Arizona "What satisfaction is left when all you do tells everyone you're acting untrue?" - Liz Phair ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 00:41:46 EDT From: Wetyuk@aol.com Subject: Liz in DC Tonight I saw Liz at the 9:30 Club in DC. One word describes the show: amazing. I'm not one to get too excited over concerts, but this was by far the most fun I've ever had at a live show. I saw Liz at Lilith this summer (Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland) and that performance wasn't even close to this one. Part of the problem there was that I was on the lawn (those who have been to the venue know that the lawn at Merriweather Post is great if you want to hear the concert but don't care a wit about actually seeing the performer). At the 9:30 Club I was right in the front, just left of the center of the stage. Liz was about 15 feet from me for most of the show, and about 8 or 9 when she came to the front of the stage on our side. She wore a long red dress and very high black heels. She looked absolutely stunning. I think that the heels started to annoy her, though. In the second half of the show she made a comment about wanting to perform barefoot, and at one point when she was doing her on-stage calisthenics (that's what Liz does now when she's not singing or playing guitar) she was tugging at the shoes. Liz seemed to enjoy herself immensely, talking with the audience between songs and having fun with the members of the band (she never introduced them by name). There was no visible nervousness or stage fright, and only one mistake bad enough for her to say, "Let's try that again" a few seconds into a song. Here's the set list: 1. Explain It To Me 2. 6'1" 3. Cinco de Mayo 4. Support System 5. Never Said 6. Johnny Feelgood 7. Johnny Sunshine 8. Uncle Alvarez 9. Polyester Bride 10. Supernova 11. Flower 12. What Makes You Happy 13. Mesmerizing 14. Divorce Song 15. White Chocolate Space Egg Three Encores: 1. Perfect World 2. Stratford-on-Guy 3. Fuck and Run That's a grand total of 18 songs--9 from EIG, 3 from Whip-Smart, and 6 from WCSE. Once again, we see the disrespect for Whip-Smart, even from Liz herself. I'm only kidding, actually it's been good to see all the Whip-Smart fans making themselves heard on this list lately. I also got 3 CDs (EIG, Whip-Smart, WCSE) signed after the show. Unfortunately, someone else took them backstage and I didn't get to meet Liz. Overall, it was an incredible night with a woman who is far and away the greatest rock star of our time. If you get a chance to see Liz on this tour, you must go. It is absolutely not to be missed. And that fulfills my posting quota for the next six months. Don't condescend! > form equal to function. As much as I love Liz, she has yet to produce a video > that is in any way as intellectual as her music. That ironic indie > posturing is REALLY getting old; it's the last quarter of 1998 almost, peeps. > ; ) > > Derek A'ight, I still haven't seen the new video, but I want to address the adjective 'intellectual'. Liz's music is creative, but I don't think of it as intellectual. I'm of the opinion that creativity and intellectualism don't really mix. (Any Julia Cameron fans out there? : ) Of course I've never sat down and chatted with Liz about it, but I think her music is produced more organically, y'know? We all know Liz is a hard worker, but I think a lot of her work may be in trying to get past, or around, her 'intellect'. I think the intellect is the Home (if you will) of the inner critic, and Liz seems to have her critic pretty much under her thumb (thank God), otherwise she wouldnt' be able to produce such unearthly music. That's one of the things that really attracted me to her at first, was that I had never heard anything like it before. I was about to use the word paradigm, but then I hate sounding like my Lit. Crit. professor. And it's such the antithesis of Liz's music, which is what I'm trying to talk about anyway. Liz said once that she wants her music to hit people on a gut level. Oh God, I'm just rambling now, but what I'm trying to say, is Liz has incredible instincts, and if she thinks her video needs an exploding walrus, then it probably does. I have just recently gotten to see her videos (Thanks Jefe!!!), and though I wouldn't call them intellectual, I do like them, especially the Jealousy video. Thanks for bearing with me. liz inspires complex feelings that don't always translate real well into English. Crazy. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #33 ***********************************
