Dorion" Subject: new question I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of the top-ten songs list and other favorite artists. So, here's a new question for you all. What are your favorite Liz moments MUSICALLY? What are those musical touches in Ms. Phair's songs that send shivers up your spine? Mine: - -the part in "Only Son" where the music gets faster - -The guitar solo in "Nashville" - -the harmonica solo in "Divorce Song" - -the seagull noises in "Don't Have Time" So...what about you all? I forgot to post this last time: there are new t-shirts being sold at the concerts. They are plain white that say "Liz Phair" on the front and "Whitechocolatespaceegg" on the back. Very simple. Noone was buying them at the Seattle show because it was kinda a rip-off for $20. Needless to say, I bought one. Where can I find this Polyester Bride vinyl single? Does it really exist? I don't know the reasoning behind Liz covering the song I'd guess that part of the reason for her covering it is that it was a hit when she was, what, 13-14 years old? The song was released in '80, do I have her age right here? It was probably one of the first big hit songs when she started her teens, and don't we all have a soft spot in our heart for the songs of our teens? Kind of embarassing to admit, but I'll always get a little setimental when I hear an early Beastie's song, or early Madonna, the Bangles, etc.. I can just imagine Liz as a little girl turning up the radio when that new song by the Vapors comes on. > Alex - about getting airplay for Liz, the radio stations in Orlando suck Yeah, large markets like Orlando are the worst for getting stations to do anything nice. A lot of the D.J.'s in major markets are hired from around the country, and have stations bidding on them for their services. As a result, many of them have very large egos and don't think to highly of the listening audience, so it would be pretty hard to get them to do something nice for you. **Disclaimer - What I have said here is based on my observations of the radio business from outside along with talking to people in the business. There are stations (many of them) that are not like this, and many D.J.'s are very cool people. However, based on what I've seen/heard, my statements hold true for a lot of the industry. I'm only saying this so I won't have someone yelling at me saying "The station I work at isn't like that!" - End of Disclaimer** >PB is included as a nominee on the poll for song of the week. Right now it >has 14% of the vote. Soul Coughing's Circles is in the lead right now, and >I don't care because I love Soul Coughing. YES! The Cough kicks ass! >The new album is really good, ad are all their albums, so check it out, yo. Totally agree with this statement. Soul Coughing are really good. Ask anybody from Minneapolis, MN. I second the recomendation to check out their albums. Probably the best one to start with would be Ruby Vroom, their first one. Irresistible Bliss is excellent, too, but it's probably easier to like if you're already a fan of the first. In my opinion. Unfortunantly, my ass is unemployed and broke, so I haven't heard the new one yet, but I'll still recommend it. - -To Sara MacKinnon- >I feel bad that I am the only one who pahks the cah. This is probably gonna sound like a dumb question, but is this a bit of a Pearl Jam reference? (Great Woods on Oct. 16th) I know it's most likely just a general Boston reference, just curious. >Just to respond to Alex (I believe it was), asking about New Yorkers and >how long they've known Ani. Cool, thanks for the response. Sorry for all the non-Liz content. Alex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Oct 1998 08:12:10 EDT From: Gabepet@aol.com Subject: a couple things... First of all, welcome Jen and you've already contributed to an ongoing discussion even if it was in a passive sense. Maybe we should give Matador and them some more credit since Polyester bride was able to convert someone into a big-time fan. That's great about the Material Issue connection because I had forgotten that they had also done Turning Japanese but they did cover the Vapors. As far as the meaning of the video, I have to say that, for years, I thought that they were saying that they were turning Japanese because the guy was looking at pictures so much that it would make him cross-eyed. (I did not think that this was PC, partly because that wasn't a term yet, but that's what I thought they might have been saying) A girl I was talking to remembered the video though and it was full of cameras and taking pictures so it's in reference to the stereotypical Japanese tourists of the 80's. I guess that could be a way of cleaning up a theme of masturbation but the song doesn't seem to make any strong mentions of it. Now I've completely left the Liz Phair topic but a song that is completely about masturbation but took me a decade to realize is the song She Bop by Cindy Lauper. Who knew? I better stop now or my thought process will carry me into talking about politics. I've seen your posts on the Sheryl Crow list! ();) Thanks for everyone for explaining to me the whole deal with Turning Japanese song. Oh, for those getting confused with Liz's next tv appearance. October 9th on the Rosie O'Donnell show (however you spell that last name?). I can't wait to see what she'll be like! I love it when Rosie gets musical guests on her show cuz she has this thing of showing a different side of them and get them to crack up. I wonder what she'll do to get Liz to crack up.....hmmmm we'll just have to wait! *excited* Liz throwing chairs at Alanis? I'm not sure of that one, but sounds more like celebrity deathmatch on MTV, which I hope they won't ever use Liz on one of their shows! I've noticed that not many on this list like Paula Cole. That's cool, but she's one of my faves and I think she's really nice. Perhaps some time, everybody could share their stories of them meeting a celebrity. Well, me am off and will be seeing Paula Cole tonight and will be thinking of everyone who is going to see Liz tomorrow night at Washington, D.C, the one show I wish I could go to, but it's too far and I'd be missing two days of school. My mother would not be one happy camper if I did that. Plus, a bunch of tests I'd be missing. Darn, if there weren't so many restrictions on such things! but that's life! I've seen the Supernova video on www.streamland.com (somebody correct if I have that address wrong, it has been a while). There was once talk of a video tape tree. Are the other videos on that, or did that just include live TV appearances? I'm going to guess ressurecting the vid tape tree would be a lost cause. Who would be the best person to contact at Matador to ask them to release a compilation of Liz Videos? Maybe if enough of us ask for it, they may decide to release them. >"Stratford-On-Guy" from _Exile in Guyville_, while the second disc >features the excellent "Stuck On An Island." You missed one show, a dismal affair in Manchester @ the local university, where Liz & band played a poorly attended show in the cafeteria with Oasis opening up for us. Oasis had just been signed to Creation Recs. & were loutish, drunken idiots. We shared a dressing room w/them (a classroom) & Liam was especially drunk & antagonistic- resulting in a near-riot between us & Oasis' buddies. A rough night of being spit at, having beer thrown on us & general vocal abuse from Manchester's finest kind of made us wish to be home quickly. The next night we opened for Pumpkins @ Brixton Academy, where the spit flew again! Toss in a savage interview with the pinheaded Everett True (of NME) & it's no wonder Liz hasn't returned to the UK since 1993. I, however, love the place...
