I now go to school in Chicago, but I'm from Buffalo, and I've been hearing about Ani for six years. Until about 2 or 3 years ago she wasn't played on anything other than college radio in Buffalo, but she's always been mentioned. She's been in our "alternative press" for a long time, and I read about her in The Buffalo News when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school (4-5 years ago). She's basically wildly adored in Buffalo b/c she hasn't forgotten her roots, and she's busted her arse and done it her way. (She and the Goo Goo Dolls--another Buffalo band-- actually have a lot more in common than you'd think). I'd always heard MUCH more about Ani than Liz Phair, but I think that's b/c of where I grew up. Also, I'm not an Ani fan b/c I don't like her voice and think she's too political and self-righteous (i was the person who said that awhile back). I admire her though, for really achieving on her own terms and for being SO loyal to her home....:)Beth btw, any other Buffalo, NY'ers? I was the one who said I thought she wasn't genuine. I didn't mean that she doesn't love her fans sincerely. Some of my best friends are Tori freaks, and I know that it's all about mutual adoration. I meant that I don't find her songs very honest and compelling. They seem posturing and false to me.I guess maybe she uses her music as therapy in a way that doesn't entertain me? (I know, I know, all artists do; Liz does, I know!). I find her whiny.Plus, her red hair is dyed (heh heh;). I know that she's had a lot of hideous stuff to deal w/ in her life (rape, miscarriage, etc). I think that her work w/ RAINN is very commendable. I just don't appreciate her music. To the Tori fans: I'm sorry to have insulted your goddess. Feel free to share your negative opinions about any artists I like. The terrible irony in my tremendous dislike of Tori is that she's coming to my school in a couple of weeks for 10 bucks. Anyone else I'd probably be there... :)ElizaBeth ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 02:11:24 EDT From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: whitechocolatespaceegg cookies? I know the subject is gonna get your mouths drooling, but I'm saving that for last! ():P Responding to a few people: Alex - about getting airplay for Liz, the radio stations in Orlando suck and the people (DJs I shall say) are kind of stuck up. The only DJs I find quite interesting are the ones that are on during the day, which I never get a chance to hear. Another thing, my friends aren't quite the ones who would call in for a radio station to request a song for me, but I'd bend over backwards to do something for them. Eric - great idea! BBQ! Could I bring popcorn from work? I work at a movie theater by the way, not that it's great or anything. (Would you like butter flavoring on that sir?) << And do we really want her to be more famous? >> For Lucas, very well said! What you wrote caught my mind and I have to agree that with being the only one around liking Liz, there are quite a few things I like about it. No one likes her, but I do. I like being in my own little world sometime. <> Rebecca, yes, when I see all these famous people like this, it makes me want to run to them and give them a big hug because I know they're human just like the rest of us. It seems like there would be a selective few who could see this, while everyone puts them on a pedestal and call them a god or goddess, which I have a hard time accepting. When someone says, Oh she's the goddess. I'm like: really? Weren't they human just like the rest of us one time? Now appetizers! I realized that I have a fall break coming up and I was thinking of spending it by trying to figure out a recipe to share with everyone. I just wanted to say thank you to KATIE for saying the awesome words about the Liz Phair sites on the web. I own and run "The Slick Divide" and I appreciate the kind words. I too, think that the sites of Liz on the web are all extremely well-done and created by some very knowledgable fans. Also, for KATIE.... "Turning Japanese" was originally an 80's song done by the Vapors. I don't know the reasoning behind Liz covering the song, but I think she's made a very awesome attempt. Polyester Bride on the other hand is just an awesome song i think. the first time i heard it i fell totally in love with it and i even called the radio station that played it to ask who sang it. i suprised to hear that it was Liz Phair b/c she seeemd to have disappeared for awhile there. but i'm so glad she's back b/c now i've become a full obsessed fan. I bought Guyville and Whip-Smart. Guyville is a true masterpiece. i cna't put it or wcse away long enough to listen to Whip-Smart enoguh but i'll try to listen to it more before I go to see Liz in concert. Is anyone else going to see Liz in Chicago on oct.25th? I'm bringing my friend who has no idea who Liz Phair is. hopefully i'll have a convert before too long. the shows are sold out and i had to pay a hefty price from a ticket broker, but i think it will be well worth it. other artists i'm into are: Sheryl Crow (sorry, but she's my #1 fave. if you don't have the new album The Globe Seesions I would strongly recommend it) she wanted to tour with Liz a few years ago before it was ok for two females to be on the same bill. unfortunately it didn't work out, but that would have been quite a show. Mary Lou Lord-awesome acoustic guitar based singer who used to perform regularly in the Boston subway system. saw her at Lilith Fair and she kicked ass Elliot Smith- his new album XO is beautiful Beck Natalie Merchant Garbage cranberries Lisa Loeb Oasis Radiohead REM this list could go on all day, so i'll just stop here i hope to see somebody from the list in Chicago, that would be cool have a nice weekend! One thing I meant to say about this but forgot to add is that some stations are starting to use pre-recorded D.J. patter for the overnight shifts, so there might not even be a person to talk to. Isn't real big right now, especially in a major market area, but it is being done. Some stations will do it when they are new or switch formats, so they can take time to hire D.J.'s. One station by me had one D.J. for a few months, she'd just record a bunch of stuff when she was in for her day shift, tell a computer when to play everything, and be done with it. Again, not very common right now, but thought I'd mention it. >Please settle an argument between my "Miss Know It All" friend and me. She >said that the Turning Japanese song is an early 80s song and said that Liz >isn't in the picture. Turning Japanese is a song by a late-seventies/early-eighties group called the Vapors. It was their only hit. I've never heard Liz's version of the song, but I checked a web site, and they list the writing credits for Liz's version as Dave Fenton, the Vapors lead singer/guitarist, so it's just a cover of that song. As a side note, this song is rumored (by some) to be about masturbation. Apparently in the early eighties, turning japanese was slang for whacking off. I've personally never heard that phrase used, but I'm more of a mid- to late-eighties child (21 yrs), so I guess I missed it. Damn, it's such a cool phrase, too. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 13:20:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Steve Subject: rosie ok, wait. on october 9th, will Liz be on Rosie O'Donnell or Roseanne? i've heard people call roseanne's show Rosie, so i just want to make sure! toriniss, steve "Security's the whore in me that never lets me fly" --heather nova ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 13:35:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Steve Subject: hair under there melba said: >>the same society that thinks that a woman's natural underarm hair is >>grody and not-normal (????) is the same one that, by and large, can't >>fathom the beauty and intelligence of Liz's music... perfectly said!!! that is totally right. i really dont get the big deal with under-arm-hair or leg hair or whatever anyways. most of my female friends don't shave and they always get dirty looks in public in the summertime. my biggest pet peeve is when someone says they hate ani difranco or paula cole. you then ask them why and they're all "ew!!! i hate hairy pits!" grow up and get past the pit hair! its just so immature. if you dislike someones music make sure its because you don't like the music, not because you dont like body hair. rebeca said: >>I do not consider myself a serious Tori Amos fan, but did anyone see her >>on Rosie this week?
