Just finished watching the Much Music Spotlight featuring the Phair One and must say that i am perplexed! Having bought EIG the first day of its release and having given it and all subsequent releases heavy rotation ( there are few individuals/groups that rate higher than or equal to Liz as far as i am concerned, but that's another issue) but I have never so much as heard of let alone seen any of these video jewels before today! Whatup? Who's holding out? This is an outrage and probably violates the first amendment, the Geneva Convention and common sense! Bitch bitch bitch... By the way, has anyone complied these and the various and sundry appearances The Phair One has made, a chronicle, if you will, of Lizia? There is at least one of us in want for such...(mre3000@earthlink.net) And having never seen a Lizvid before, it must be nice to be able to write that it would have been far better to have shown 'Never Said' or 'Jealousy'' (shame on you jason..) to which i reply: I"LL TAKE WHAT I CAN GET!!! I really liked this interview with Liz. When I first subscribed to this list, I didn't post, partly because I was kind of embarrassed to be such a huge fan of someone I went to college with. What I mean is, though I didn't know her (she's was a couple years ahead of me - she would have been a senior at Oberlin when I transferred in as a sophomore), I might have, and this somehow makes me aware that she is a regular person - a fantabulous witty songwriter and musician no doubt, but a regular person too. And being a fan contrasts with this because it somewhat involves making a person larger than life. But with these incessant posts (which have to end soon so I can focus on work and everything else!), any hope of anonymity or hiding the amount of time passed recently in fan-dom is long since lost! Somebody recently asked us to tell *why* we are fans. (I haven't seen as many posts on this as I would expect.) So I will admit that part of my initial and continuing curiosity about her music stems from the fact that she went to Oberlin. The years I spent there were definitely among the best of my life. Rough of course, too, but I like to idealize the experience in retrospect. I was exposed to so many things and eventually had some very true friends. Maybe this sounds like a lot of people's college years. But I always wonder if and how and to what degree being at Oberlin influenced her and what she has to say about the place (I'd like to read any articles in which she talks about this, if you have suggestions). So her statements about private colleges and being self-centeredly analytical in this interview are interesting. I think I can see her point, but I also still crave that intellectual atmosphere and people's enthusiasm for discussing and analyzing things. And I don't think motherhood is the only way to go outside of yourself and be more giving. And I also just want to say "hah!" because there was a discussion awhile ago about why do we have to analyze everything so much and what I really wanted to say is, "I bet your star is analytical too," and here she says it. I know I don't have any corner on the truth for interpreting her songs, yet I like to imagine that I am somewhat familiar with the feminist framework she was probably exposed to in college which I think serves as an important backdrop for her work. It's sort of a basis to respond to... The music would have a different meaning in a different decade. There was something about being at Oberlin, a very liberal (the good part) but also pretty politically correct and judgmental (the restrictive part) place, that after a few years made you want to watch trash tv or drive to the convenience store. Anyhow, I'd like to discuss the feminist or non-feminist or post-feminist (whatever that means) aspects of her work with people, but not on the list space, so e-mail me if you care. It's also interesting because all that I'd read about her upbringing before is that she called it "perfect," and here there is something about the maintenance of appearances. I can relate to that. Being in a place where there is denial or a very stong and moderate norm (such as my recent workplaces and grad school) makes me want to shock people or be wild. I really love the song canary for the lines "I learn my name. I write with a number two pencil. I work up to my potential." Being a good girl and a good student, and as you learn who you are and what street you live on (which is sweet), you always simultaneously learn something about the culture and about conformity. But I'm making the digest *way* too long. Sorry. Mostly I like her because she rocks, okay? Maybe we could publish a scrapbook of Liz articles and photographs. But I think listreaders would be the major market for it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 22:52:55 -0700 From: "Heather Coleman" Subject: one more thing Oh, one more thing: I have to make a plug for this band I saw at North by Northwest called "Third Grade Teacher." They are from California somewhere, I think Northern. Really great performers. It's a punk band with a fair amount of screaming, yet at the same time very tuneful. The lead singer is so theatrical. The Liz similarity - for those of you who like her because you think she's pretty - is that the lead singer is this beautiful blond women (who really is a third grade teacher) singing often very un-sweet lyrics. Okay, I think it's out of my system. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 23:42:43 -0700 From: Paul Veravanich Subject: Re: Nude Liz Photo OK, I saw the slide show and I'm not entirely convinced that the total nude shots were of Liz. Here's my case: - - the face on the model was obscured - - the photo was not the same type/quality of the others (which were of the photo booth/home picture variety as opposed to studio quality) - - the body didn't seem to match Liz's (breasts seemed too large) - - and Liz has used other female models on before (I think - see the Exile CD, I don't think the pictures are of Liz, except for the last one) Of course, there were other pictures in the show wherein Liz flashed a nipple. I guess it's pretty pathetic that I even noticed all these details, but if Liz had an OPENING ACT then maybe I wouldn't have had to look at the same damn pictures ten times over! And I was forced to listen to "Ray of Light" by Madonna on top of it! BTW, anyone remember the Wiltern show last time around when Jewel was the opening act? Oh well, I guess I'm done. Late. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 02:43:43 -0400 From: "Alex Miller" Subject: Re: various things >Subject: Liz On Leno >Did Liz just seem extremely nervous to anyone else??? >I'm sure it's scary as hell to perform in front of all those people day in and day out Well, I think it probably has to do with the fact that on Leno and Letterman and Rosie and such, she's performing in front of (potentially)millions of people, as opposed to 5,000 to 10,000 for a typical smaller venue show. There are only maybe a couple hundred in the studios for the talk shows, but she knows it's being broadcast to a hell of a lot more. Does anyone know the average # of viewers for the late-night shows? I know I could find it online if I wanted, but I'm too lazy right now. >Musically [Polyester Bride] is very catchable, very singable, love the hooks, >and that is probably why it is the feature song on the cd That's exactly why it's the single. Record companies like to pick the song that is the catchiest, that will stick in people's heads, even if it means sacrificing quality. (I'm not judging the quality of PB here, just generalizing the business side of music.) >Well, I've been thinking about David Perry's ideas on why Liz isn't any >bigger. I'm not sure how I feel about them, because he might be EXACTLY >RIGHT. I think someone else may have mentioned that Matador's dropped the >ball. I don't think Matador has really dropped the ball. I'm of the opinion that it's more of a conscious decision to get enough exposure (Leno, Letterman, etc.) to move some units, but keep it small enough (not much radio airplay, short tours) that there isn't a huge, overwhelming demand for her next album, and huge expectations. This allows her to do pretty much what she wants, and not have to worry about pleasing the general public. It also allows her to take more time between albums. If she was a huge star, she'd have to turn out an album every year and a half to keep the masses interested, before they forget and move on. (There are exceptions, NIN, Beasties, etc., but it's very hard to reach that level.) I talked about this the other day, so I'll end it here, you can check back if you'd like. >I mean, we need something Batman-sized (it did wonders for Seal's career -- or >has it? Anyone seen Seal, lately?). Well, that was an effort to revive his career, and it didn't work too hot. He had actually hit it big a few years before with the song "Crazy". Anyone else remember that song? I think he's in the studio (or recently done) working on a new album, I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere. >How did other "underground acts" get to be so big? >U2 >REM >Pearl Jam >Ani DiFranco Well, all these acts worked their asses off, touring, recording, promoting, etc., although Ani doesn't belong in this group. Nothing against her, I think she's amazing, but she's got even less exposure than Liz does, at least from what I've seen and heard (or in this case, not seen and heard). It's just in the last year or two that she's started to make herself known (cover of Spin, voice on "King of the Hill"), before that she was pretty "underground", for lack of a better word. Question: Anyone here from New York state? If so, how long have you known of Ani? I know she's from Buffalo, and released her tapes locally at first, just wondering when you first heard of her. I actually first heard her in college, when one of my roommates, who was from New York, played her tapes a lot. I got hooked pretty quick. >I do have one complaint about the video, and that is how they used the radio >mix of the song for it....I really feel that it interrupts the flow of the song. Maybe >for a more casual listener...it would seem completely natural, but to me it was >really distracting. Well, unfortunately, if it's too long, radio and TV just won't play it. It kind of sucks, but they are much more concerned with ads, and the shorter the songs, the more ads, plus they can play more songs. This isn't as much the case on TV, but if a song is released as a radio single, they usually like to stick with the same one for a video, just so people aren't going "huh?" >I do have to say that I hope that Liz will perform something other than >"Polyester Bride" when she appears on the Rosie O'Donnell Show next week. No such luck. They'll play it only because it is the single, otherwise people might not make the connection that it's the same person who was on Leno the other night. (Pretty sad statement about the general public, ain't it?) The only luck you might have is if they allow her to play two songs, which is fairly rare. When Pearl Jam was on Letterman in '96, they launched into another song (Leaving Here) after they played the single (Hail, Hail), but the show ended right then. AHHHH! >< That sure sucks! I requested Liz numerous times and gave up cuz they're not >gonna listen to some one crazed Liz fan! sigh..... One thing I can suggest, if you've got a really cool station in your area, and you're extremely persistent and nice, you might be able to convince a cool D.J. to throw one song on. It would be best to try the night D.J.'s, as they're usually the least concerned with playlists (least concerned meaning they'll rarely play a song not on it, but a lot more often than the drive-time D.J.'s.) Enlist a few friends to help out, even if they aren't fans. Just ask them to take a minute to call up and ask for it. A station will be more responsive if more (different) people call. Don't do it all at the same time though, as they'll realize it's one person using friends. As for the night D.J.'s, ask one to play it right before he ends his shift. If you can get it played, definitely have people call up raving about "...that song you played the other night, by somebody named Liz Phair or something. I loved it!" Basically, stroke their ego's. They love that. (It also helps if you're in a smaller city, this probably doesn't work too well with stations in larger metropolitan areas, the big corporate stations, who could give a shit about anybody that wants something other than the latest big hit played.) >...wouldn't be great if we could all get together and meet one another? That sounds cool, but everyone seems to be pretty spread out. Be fun to try, though. >as well as my 50 yr old gay aunt This is the line of the digest. Absolutely no offense meant, it's just that the wording kills me. One more thing before I end this very long post. I've just recently joined the list, and have posted a few times, and as you can tell, I tend to ramble on a bit. Is this annoying anyone? I'll promise to make my posts much shorter if this is a problem for anybody. Let me know. Leno and Letterman - from what some of you wrote about both, I get this feeling that maybe Liz isn't sure of herself performing on national tv. I'm sure I'd be nervous to be in front of a mike and sing some song in front the whole America plus all the satellite people. yikes! Feeling nervous already! Sara - you got me crying girl! I missed my chance of Liz on Leno too, but thanks to Jason and other people who offered to make me a tape! Martina - Oh my gosh! I wasn't aware of that! I felt like going to the store and buy WCSE and send it to ya right this second! Jenny - sorry! I saw Savage Garden in concert the day after Lilith Fair, but believe me that I absolutely hated it and felt I wasted my time and money seeing them! The only thing I did like about the concert was the opening act, Billie Myers. Please settle an argument between my "Miss Know It All" friend and me. She said that the Turning Japanese song is an early 80s song and said that Liz isn't in the picture. I didn't feel like arguing because I knew I was right that Liz sang the song and it's the only version I've heard by far. So what's the story with Turning Japanese? When I was looking at the lyrics one someone's page, I noticed that not everything is printed in the WCSE cover. Why is that? I'm singing along to (cheers to Jenny) Perfect World and knew I was missing a few words in there! Thanks to who ever the author of Phairy Tales is! I got the chance to read the review for Liz's Seattle performance (thanks to a friend who scanned it for me), and I have to say that it absolutely sucks 100%! I most definitely didn't like this line: Phair was best when she wasn't doing songs about sex. So, I'm glad for the reviews I did read from devoted fans who was there the same nite! Looking at my calendar, I noticed that I've been listening to Liz for two months non-stop and feel like I've been a fan for two years. No, I didn't write on my calendar when I first bought one of Liz's cds! I just remembered that I bought a cd of hers two weeks before WCSE came out. Also, I noticed that started my web page two days after WCSE was released. Geez! A lot of things going on around the wonderful date of August 11, 1998! Sorry, if so long, but one last thing before I go. (hopefully it's the last thing!) I've noticed how much of a big impact Liz has made in my life. I write poetry and have started a poetry list (if interested, please e-mail me!), but when I look back at some, I noticed that some of my poems were inspired by some of Liz's songs. Just to list a few songs I was inspired by: Flower (don't know why!), White Chocolate Space Egg, Girls' Room (yes, a girls room poem), my reaction to the Polyester Bride is in another poem. Also, out of no where, I wrote my own song inspired by Johnny Feelgood and I'll have to say that it's a funny song and my friends liked it. Many of us have mentioned that we didn't "get" Liz at first listen. Maybe that's why she doesn't get so much airplay. And do we really want her to be more famous? Sure, it's nice to share with others something that you think is so special and wonderful, but not by playing it over and over on the radio. That's why i never listen to the radio anymore, because they just play the same ten damn songs over and over until you hate them! I think (hope) Liz is making shitloads of money from her albums and concerts and girly t-shirts and everything, so I don't think that's a good reason for wanting her to be more famous. I just think her music transcends the broadcast industry as we know it. My hope for Liz to get radio play would have to be tied to an enlightenment of the radio stations and MTV and everything. I've never heard one of her songs on the radio. : ( Love, Lucas ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 14:23:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeffrey Larson Subject: liz video hi all. i need to amend the statement i made about trading bootlegs for the video i've made. i appreciate everyone's offers so far, but i am looking for liz bootlegs, not other artists. sorry about the confusion. anyway, like i said before, if you have nothing to trade, just e-mail me and something can be arranged. just to let everyone know, it will take a little while before all orders can be filled because of the volume of requests that i've already recieved, however, i do want to share this video with anyone who is interested. so, i will let everyone know when their video goes out. thanks for the response to this video. talk to everyone later. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 16:04:44 -0700 (PDT) From: jganz@POMONA.EDU Subject: the card sorry it took me so long to get this out in the open: in case anyone was wondering if somebody was doing anything about the idea to thank/congratulate liz for the album and the tour, wonder no longer. drew (wonderful boy that he is) has purchased a card (hallmark no less) that hopefully will make its way to our heroine sometime in the not too distant future. for those of you that are still curious, the outside says something like: 'the kids think you're great' then the inside says: 'smart kids. thanks.' simple and pretty appropriate me thinks. so the original plan was for people to email me privately and i would set up a sort of chain for the card to travel in, and then someone suggested that we try and give it to her at a concert near the end of the tour...i guess it's a little late for that. anyway, i was wondering if there was someone out there that has an idea of a good way to get this card to her that would still allow for as many people as want to sign the card to be able to do so (did that make any sense?). i still think that privately emailing me will get the job done, but i don't know if i am the best person to set up the entire tree. i would be happy to get it started, but maybe someone else--someone that has a contact @ matador perhaps?--could give me some information regarding how it might get done. also, i figured that unless he has already done something of this sort, jase would probably like to be in on this. and seeing as how he does such a gorgeous job running this list, i think it might be appropriate for him to add sort of a final touch to it if he wants. i guess what i will do now is just wait for the rest of you to tell me either privately or to post on the list as to what you think i should do. cheers. jacob. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 17:14:41 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: question to those who have seen her play live Hello everyone, Just a question to those who have seen her play live: My guess is she's probably put together a set list that she enjoys playing, without having too many "constraints" of hit singles that she'd "have to play." Can you tell, just watching her, which songs she just loves playing? I wonder what HER favorite songs are. I think somewhere along the way, I've heard she likes "Support System" and "May Queen" (though I think the May Queen bit I saw in an article dated back to '94 or '95). She's mentioned in some article I read recently that she pretty much feels shamanistic, that the songs come to her pretty much complete when they come to her. I know Dylan felt the same way. When pressed for some of his own favorite songs, I think he sort of muttered that "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" has some amazing things in it, but I don't think he took too much credit for it. Unbelievable. I just wanted to post some of my fave bands. Like someone said about some of their faves; alot of these are nostalgic for me and hold a special place in my heart(can I get any more corny?) In no particular order: Liz (of course) Beastie Boys Marilyn Manson Fiona Apple Busta Rhymes (everybody should like him!) Lords of Acid Beck Poe Garbage Lenny Kravitz My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult Madonna (every song on every album...) Green Day (nostalgia, baby!) Foo Fighters Red Hot Chili Peppers No Doubt (nostalgia again!) Limp Bizkit (I really like how they covered George Michael's "Faith") Ministry Deftones (haven't heard lots of songs by them, but really like the ones I have heard) Korn (same thing as Deftones) Hole Fugees Wyclef Jean Tori Amos Otis Redding (Try A Little Tenderness is my theme song:)) Goldfinger (same as Deftones) Tricky Prodigy Chemical Brothers K.C. and the Sunshine Band (nostalgia overload!) Everclear Rob Zombie (really love the new song he has out) that dog (same as Deftones) Pavement (same as Deftones) on and on and on and on... Before the power went out on Sunday night, I got a chance to see the 'Polyester Bride' vid. I have to say, I don't really like it that much. I mean, it's totally Liz's style and it really fits her well(and I don't mean that in a bad way)but I guess I was just expecting something else. I'm not sure what, but something else:) On the other hand, I love Fiona Apple's new vid. I like the way it's done. I know Fiona isn't very popular on this list so I won't discuss the vid! Hugs, *Rollergirl* Sorry my list is so long; once I get started it's hard to stop! It's shagadelic, baby, yeah! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 20:59:51 -0700 (PDT) From: mags Subject: Re: just about anything i can think of right now... hey all a request: first off, does anyone know if the T.O. date is sold out yet??? just found out that i can go--plus being lazy, i can call tomorrow... in advance (and jinxing myself for tickets i guess) is anyone driving in from Montreal? wanna carpool?? next: my favourite thing about Liz Phair right now is Lucas!!!!! thank-you x a bizillion for the tapes. it is like falling in love all over again! i love the folky parts the uber-warbles the rockin-ness the girly-voice, etc., etc., i am (almost) not even kidding when i say that it made me laugh, it made me weep. and it defenitely gave me goosebumps. a question: had anyone ever gone out a purchase Exile on Main Street from the Stones to do the *big* song by song comparison.... been meaning to do that for ages, but haven't got around to it... thinking of doing it again after listening to Girlysounds and Phairities (see previous paragraph) because there are heaps of stones-ey riffs in there... damn, had way more to say, but lucky for you guys, i forgot already.... cheerio melba p.s. that Celine Dion 'quote'..... what the hell? sounds like something Our L.P. coulda said.... ??!!??!! _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? They had a panel of women who had been sexually assaulted in the audience, and they bravely shared their stories on national television. One girl gained much confidence and strength from listening to Tori after her horrific experience, and when the show went to commerical Tori got right up and gave her an incredibly sincere, caring and powerful hug. I thought it was really touching and although i don't listen to Tori often, I thought I'd add in to the debate on Tori's treatment of fans. Also, I think the fact that Liz gets so obviously uncomfortable on national television is what makes her as human as the rest of us, which is why I think most of us love her so much. My two cents on amazing musicians (aside from Liz): Built to Spill Neutral Milk Hotel Tobin Sprout The Beatles Neil Young Elliott Smith Pavement Radiohead Joni Mitchell Sebadoh Modest Mouse Beastie Boys Wilco Beck Sinead O'Connor ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #29 ***********************************
