For anyone going to an upcoming show, before the concert a slide show plays with two projectors on the main curtain. A frontal nude of Liz is projected on the right screen for about 10 seconds. This same image is again projected during the concert about 5 songs in (unfortunately I cant remember which song - but it is the only one with picture slides projected). The image is again held for about 30 seconds and is even clearer. If someone going to an upcoming show could sneak in a camera and take a picture of the slide and post it for us I'm sure many of us would be grateful. If anyone's done this already and knows where to get the photo please let me know. Just some various random thoughts... Okay, now that everyone else has spoken, I feel I can say it: I really, unabashedly love Whip-Smart. And my favorite song on it is Supernova (though I've never heard it, or any Liz song, on the radio - ever). It always, without fail, puts me in a good mood and gets my body humming. There. I feel better now. I, too, liked the PB video (have only seen it once, the 120 Minutes debut) - - especially the shots of the crying babies (funny!) and the repeated shots of the women toward the end, smiling away in their gowns... ha ha! The cracking open of the ostrich egg was a bit much, but a memorable image nonetheless. Re: other debut videos on 9/27/98 120 Minutes... I didn't care for the new PJ Harvey one at all - too static, too boring. I did like Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" - it was strangely hypnotic. She may have a nasty personality, but she has a great voice. So many of you have seen Liz in the MTV Influences spots... well, I've been watching lots of MTV the past week or 2 trying to catch it, and all I've seen is the Iggy Pop one, over & over. I don't have a problem with him, but ENOUGH! I WANNA SEE LIZ!!! Good for you, Eric, re: catching Liz's hair comb... you made me smile! I'd be thrilled too. Nora, you *slayed* me with the "Mariah lion's mane hairdo" remark - ROFLMAO! Right on! Alex and the other Derek (Dermich), thank you both for very insightful summaries of the music biz and why we should actually be grateful that Liz isn't "bigger." We devoted fans are willing to work a little to enjoy her music, anyway - right??!! If anyone cares, a friend of mine saw Davy Jones (of the Monkees) at a 60s-reunion-ensemble outdoor performance at the NYS Fair recently, along with Bobby Sherman and other similar acts (don't worry, she didn't have to pay for this, it was a free performance). She said everyone was really nice, but Davy Jones was an asshole - rude to fans. 'Nuff said about the Monkees? Saw Liz on Jay Leno last night - it was great to see her perform semi-live, but she definitely got short shrift from Jay. He obviously barely knew who she was, mentioned her as little as possible, and didn't ask her even one question afterwards when she sat in the guest chair. Jay should have spent WAY less time trying to macho-cook veal chops with Emeril Lagasse. For God's sake, that was annoying to sit through, waiting for Liz! Thanks for listening... If anyone knows what designs & colors they have and how much they cost, please e-mail me Oh4sythia@aol.com. Thanks. Oh by the way, barette-boy (or should I say "hair-comb") - I loved your post. I called my friend up to read it to her (she went to the show with me, and despite never having heard Liz before that week, she LOVED it) and we both appreciated your descriptions of the accessory itself and the reactions of your friends to your excitement. Damn, isn't there a way to scan it instead of typing? You're all so dedicated. "All's Phair in Love and Rock:" by Marty Hughley, ("The celebrated post-feminist songwriter finds a clamer life and a richer musical voice") . . . Q: The effect of having a child has been a big focus in recent coverage of Madonna. Do you think that change will have a similar impact on your creative life? A: Very much so. It's about, I suppose, people who are relatively self-centered in the 20's becoming part of the larger world and writing from that perspective. It's also about coming to a point of equilibrium with yourself. There's something about having a child that just nails you down to the earth really hard, and soars you way up into the sky. The feelings that you have are so beyond anything you thought you'd ever have - the love and the sense of awe at life. It's very lofty in some senses. But at the same time, what it takes to raise a child and the lifestyle change - like when they throw a fit and there's . . . all over the house - that's really mundane, get-your-hands-dirty living. I feel a little more a part of life than I did before. Q: Rather than being detached and intellectualizing what you saw? A: Yeah, I think kids that grow up and go to private schools and are supported in using their brain analytically - that's not the real world. And there's a kind of self-centeredness in that. And you don't really realize that all those people were getting paid to pay attention to you. Q: Has all the rock-crit deconstruction applied to your work struck you as so much blather, or do you write with a mind to the kind of theorizing you know you'll encounter? A: I definitely don't write with that in mind. I don't want to go too witchy on you, bit it really does feel like you're channeling, like the song comes to you already written. It's almost like you're dreaming while you're awake - there's something of a shaman in them. And I really like that my shaman, or my muse, has an eye for the mundane details of life. There are humorous and completely banal details in my songs because they're also archetypal. So that's the mystery for me. But because I have a superanalytical mind, I also enjoy the fact that people who are intelligent look at my songs and find something to think about. Q: You told the writer Lorraine Ali that you like to "evoke a reaction that unsettles people without actually shoving anything down their throat." Which is certainly what your new single "Johny Feelgood" does. Why this approach? A: I think it's just the way I am. It's a playful thing, but it's also that I grew up in an environment that valued covering stuff up and making appearances as perfect as possible. And so I always used songwriting as a way to go up to my room and say what I really thought was going on. And it just became a habit. My cable company gives me NBC on 2 channels, from 2 different time zones... i.e. I get Leno at 9:30 and at 12:30.. ish. When I set my timer for the later broadcast, I based it on the time of the 9:30 broadcast... but I didn't account for a ball game that threw everything off... Anyways, this evening, I was flipping again, and spotted an interview/performances by Sarah McLachlan on MuchMusic. Knowing full well that MM repeats their prime time lineup after 4 hours, I actually got confused about the time (I've recently moved into a new timezone, so everything on MM is at different times now.. to me anyways... ;-) ), and thought it was Spotlight. So, anyways... to make a long story shorter... ;-) I was wrong... it was LIZ!!! As far as I can tell, they played all of her videos!! Anyways... I just thought I'd share my happy news. It's just too bad it's unlikely you'll receive this in time for the repeat (it repeats later tonight... umm... last night... you know what I mean!) However... this is MuchMusic... who is renowned for repeating everything over and over. And now that they have the Liz Spotlight all prepped, they'll likely repeat it again in the near future! Keep your eyes open... ;-) Patrick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 22:52:16 -0600 From: Patrick Chan Subject: Me again... re: the Spotlight Hey all, I guess I was just caught not actually reading this list... ;-) I just realized someone's already mentioned it... heheh Whoops...
