This happened to be my first time of ever seeing Phair as something besides a still picture on the wcse or whip-smart CD covers or in various 'net galleries besides that super-fast Rolling Stones thing where I just happened to see her and realize a second later that "Whoah, that was Liz Phair!". Frankly, was I impressed! Leno kinda stumbled over the title of wcse if I noticed right, but when the camera switched over from Leno, the absolute first thing I noticed was "My God! What eyes..." I don't know if my observation was accurate, but her rendition of "Polyester Bride" seemed a tad faster than the wcse version; fear, perhaps? (I know that if I were in her place, I'd be scared into tunelessness, but...) His remarks, of course, were dead-on, IMO. Talented singer and songwriter indeed! "Polyester Bride" unfortunately was the only song on tap for tonight; Leno walked out and engaged in a bit of non-mike smalltalk, and from there he plugged tomorrow's show. Yep, I liked it. Was worth the wait; further, it reaffirmed my faith in my decision to choose Phair for 'new music'. Thanks to you folks for mentioning this upcoming appearance; I live too bloody far away from any of her tour dates, so TV and what not are my best bets for media exposure. If this seems like useless prattle, forgive me. It's 1:08 AM here, and I'm tired. :P Thanks for the time and bandwidth, Michael Worrell Another one of those 20-year old Phair fans; listening since 5 September 1998 (Thanks to someone for the Stratford GS MP3) As an aside, let me toss my my two cents in on favorite artists and what not... Sheryl Crow & Liz currently are the only two that stand out as folks I'd spend money on. Why? I dunno. Regarding Liz on the air: In my little market of two 'modern' stations, I've yet to hear a Phair song in five years; mindless corporate crap and that Godforsaken Aerosmith tune for 'Armageddon' rule the airwaves here. That line about purchased playlists has to be right...I catch the two playing the same bloody songs at the same time every so often; it's creepy to switch stations and realize you're hearing the Backstreet Buffoons singing the same song at the exact same point in said song. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1998 01:11:20 -0400 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: Re stuff To the new fan - get exile in guyville, if nothing else you must must must get it, trust me, you wont be dissapointed next, whoever likes Savage Garden - yikes To the guy who hates 3rd eye blind - im right with ya on that one! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jenny I wanna be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious http://www.saylerfamily.com/jas/lizphair.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Want to throw in praying? She performed pretty well, but that was not the best version of PB--I hope her stage fright isn't coming back!! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's scary as hell to perform in front of all those people day in and day out, but last night, she really seemed nervous. I was surprised that she missed like 3 chords and that her voice was cracking a bit, because at her concert she couldn't have performed better. I guess Liz has her bad days too! And what was with the Joan Osborne twin singing backup--did they clone her or what?? I was really pissed that Jay didn't even talk to her a bit. The one newspaper article I read at that time said something about halter tops and looking like she emerged from a trailer pa rk. In this concert, she looked like anybody's suburban sister (or what such m ight aspire to): tan, trim, very blonde, barretted. I mean, I think it's fine to play with different images or enjoy dressing up, and she's said something a bout singing sweetly or looking sweet but having these raunchy lyrics as a conc ious contrast. But I'm curious. I saw Liz in NY in early '94 and mid '95 I think. I think she's always liked playing with her image. At the second show she dressed in a not particularly memorable way; something like jeans and a flashy (bright) shirt. At the first show she dressed like the perfect prep school girl, a medium length charcoal skirt, a white sweater and a string of pearls. The only thing about the sweater was that it was thin and white and she wore no bra, so her nipples were visible. (My girlfriend at the time really liked the show but she commented afterward "She could have worn a bra"!) One got the feeling that the effect was intentional, sort of a fashion statement saying two seemingly incongruous things at the same time. Eric ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1998 17:48:47 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: thoughts on how to get Liz a little more famous :) Well, I've been thinking about David Perry's ideas on why Liz isn't any bigger. I'm not sure how I feel about them, because he might be EXACTLY RIGHT. I think someone else may have mentioned that Matador's dropped the ball. I dunno. I mean, Liz has received as much exposure in the magazines as anyone. The "wcse blitz of '98" sort of reminds me of a few years back, when Janeane Garofalo was out promoting the shit out of "The Truth About Cats & Dogs." I LOVE Janeane, but you couldn't escape her. So, I think she's been promoted as well as anyone has. I think there's a few things working against her: 1) if WE can't even turn our Closest Friends on to her (people who's tastes we trust and trust will enjoy her as much as we do)...there's no hope for the American public at large 2) her choice of "Polyester Bride" as a single (or Matador's or her management's or whoever decides) wasn't exactly perfect. It's a better choice than "Big Tall Man," which, if you checked out certain websites, was the original choice pegged for single-hood. But you gotta give me "What Makes You Happy" or "Johnny Feelgood" (radio-edit or otherwise) or "Ride," even. Hopefully, they'll release one of these songs as a second single. 3) she's married to an unfamous man (sorry, horrible joke) 4) she will probably, most definitely NOT be a road-hound 5) the four years between albums didn't help I came up with an idea that might help: get a certain song onto a soundtrack of a BIG MOVIE (maybe a "Perfect World" or a "What...Happy"), in an "important scene" or something. I don't think a "Stealing Beauty"-sized movie is going to help, even if the song "Rocket Boy" did lead that movie off. (Anyone see it? I'd like to hear people's opinions about the movie.) I mean, we need something Batman-sized (it did wonders for Seal's career -- or has it? Anyone seen Seal, lately?). Speaking of Seal (and "Kissed By A Rose"), I don't care how often that song's been played on the radio or on the music channels, I love it. Some other heavily saturated songs I've adored in the last few years: S. Pumpkins "1979," Cranberries "Linger," GooGoo Dolls "Name." Anyone else out there enjoy the heavy saturation? How did other "underground acts" get to be so big? U2 -- heavy touring, a couple videos, released great albums every year or so, were involved in causes and wrote emotional music...hmm... REM -- constant tour/album/tour/album, released a catchy song (The One I Love) and then another (Stand)...I guess Rolling Stone helped them out by calling them the Band of The 80's some time in the mid-80's (OK, maybe a big Rolling Stone article on "Why Isn't Liz Phair Everyone's Favorite Songwriter Yet" or something like that would help) Pearl Jam -- they had good timing, a big hit song in "Alive" and had a Vedder vs. Cobain thing going for a while (they had publicity going...hmm...so did Oasis. Can anyone explain to me why Oasis is godhead in Britain and why we on this side of the Atlantic should care? I mean, they have a few decent songs, but hey --) Ani DiFranco -- album/tour/album/tour, cult following -- but she's not actually that HUGE, is she? I could go on and on (and talk about Beck, Metallica :), Nirvana and plenty of others, but...maybe Liz doesn't have a wider audience (or doesn't want one?!?!). There are a number of artists out there who have had the same audience for years (like Elvis Costello, Bob Mould, Rush or even the Rolling Stones, for that matter). Maybe we're it...and we should rejoice. LOL > >Eric > > > > ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 20:44:59 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Liz Spotlight, Tonight Show appearance Wow! That's the best way I can sum it up -- "wow." I just finished watching and taping MuchMusic's Liz spotlight, and I was really impressed. They showed four interview clips of Liz from August, when she was in Toronto for the Lilith Fair shows, and all of these were clips that weren't shown during the Fax segment they devoted to Liz at that time. A lot of the clips were about the impact 'Exile' had when it was released, and it was weird hearing Liz talk about how she had expected it only to sell about 1,500 copies and how that would have been a great success for her, given how the album was certified for gold sales earlier this year. I was really happy to finally have a chance to see the "Polyester Bride" video. I know that the consensus on the video here on the list has been mixed, but I really liked it. I think part of it may be because I saw it right after seeing some of her earlier videos that, while cool and a lot of fun, could have benefitted in some ways from better production. The video for "Polyester Bride" does seem like a step forward from, say, "Stratford-on-Guy," and probably stands the best chance of any Liz video since "Supernova" to get added into regular rotation. That said, I do have one complaint about the video, and that is how they used the radio mix of the song for it, which omits the second appearance of the "You're lucky to even know me" verse. I really feel that it interrupts the flow of the song. Maybe for a more casual listener or someone who hadn't heard the song before, it would seem completely natural, but to me it was really distracting. They also played the videos for "Stratford-on-Guy," "Supernova," "Whip-Smart," "The Tra La La Song," and "Rocket Boy" during the spotlight. The broadcast didn't even run the full half-hour, so they could have easily included the "Never Said" or "Jealousy" videos as well, but for some reason they didn't. And the fact that they chose to air the "Tra La La Song" video over one of those two kind of irks me as well. Still, I'm just glad that they chose to do a spotlight on Liz at all. I'm taking this as a good sign that maybe they'll even put the "Polyester Bride" into semi-regular rotation, or at least play it more than three or four times. I also really enjoyed Liz's Tonight Show appearance last night. I taped it and have watched it quite a few times today, and I really think she gave a good performance. She did seem a tad nervous, as she did when she appeared on Letterman in August, but this time she seemed like she was enjoying herself anyway and she seemed a little more animated in terms of movement and facial expressions. This really doesn't have anything to do with anything, but while a couple of other people have noted that Liz's back-up singer looks a little like Joan Osborne, has anyone else noticed that her guitar player looks like the actor who played Charley on Empty Nest? Is it just me? I just thought it was kind of funny. I do have to say that I hope that Liz will perform something other than "Polyester Bride" when she appears on the Rosie O'Donnell Show next week. I know it's the single and all, and I really do like it a lot, but it doesn't seem to translate as well to live performance as other songs might. For example, when I saw Liz at the Lilith Fair in Buffalo, she did a tremendous version of "Uncle Alvarez," which sounded just as good live as on the album. "Polyester Bride" is one of those songs that does sound okay live, but is much better in its recorded form. Just my opinion, of course. Also, if anyone managed to tape Liz's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" appearance last week, I'd love to get a copy and have a lot to trade for it. I listened to the show with RealAudio when it was broadcast, but as we all know, that's really not the best way to hear these things. I did think Liz's performance was excellent, although I wished the host would have been more knowledgable about her music and would have asked her a few more questions. I was really happy to hear Liz perform "Support System" on the show; I really hadn't expected that, and it sounded really good. Also, although 'Exile in Guyville' is my favorite Liz album, I've been spending more time listening to 'whitechocolatespaceegg' and 'Whip-Smart' over the last couple of weeks. Listening to 'Exile' right now though, it occurs to me just how much I love "Soap Star Joe" and "Johnny Sunshine." If I were to re-do my list of ten Liz faves now, these two songs would likely be included this time. I also regret not having been able to include "Gunshy" before -- an incredible song for listening to on headphones. I know this is already incredibly long, otherwise I'd take the time to reply to a lot of things that have been mentioned on the list over the past week. A lot of great discussion has been taking place, and I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts. Jase P.S. Phair, vocals, guitar & vocals. B. Wood, drums, synth, sax & back voc. E. Rice, rum chimes. Where is it again? Do I have a typo on my cd? (Also, Go West has some keys in there.) <> Again, Jenny, I have my fingers crossed too! We have enough in common if our fave song is Perfect World! I heard they're singing Fuck and Run, which I don't know how will go since they bleep such things on national tv. (Remember the record Madonna made on Letterman?) Well, with the "big hit on the head" subject.....um....I'm kinda pissed at my VCR for this! I didn't get Liz on Leno last nite. =*( I got up to the part: coming up next, Liz Phair. One commercial after that, then it cuts me off. I'm soooooo pissed and have no idea what the hell to do. So, could someone please make a video of all the tv appearances Liz has been doing lately? including the Much Music? I would be sooo grateful. Another thing for me to scream about, I lost Liz's appearance on Letterman. What the hell is wrong w/ my electronics connecting with my tv?! (the clocks aren't the same. different clock for tv, VCR and cable. modern technology?) Don't worry, I have a more cheerful subject to talk about before leaving. At school, I was in the computer lab for a class and was bored and had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. So what I do? I go and take a peek at some Liz page (www.city.ac.uk/~er583/music/liz_phair/liz_phair.html) and look at lyrics. It turned out that my teacher was looking over my shoulder and asked if I was looking up recipes cuz he saw whitechocolatespaceegg on the screen. I'm like: um, no, WCSE is the name of a really cool album I'm about to wear out soon. So, I tell my "Turning Japanese" friend about this ordeal and she came up with this really funny idea of us getting together to come up with a recipe for whitechocolatespaceegg and try it out. So what does everybody think? I think it's hilarious! I know I'll probably get yelled at for this one. CAN'T WE ALL GET ALONG?! Once again, I can't rate any of Liz's cds and see them as equally great in their own way! Please, please respect other people's opinions! Hey everyone, just wanted to drop a note before I hit the sacks. I really enjoy this list and think it's the best. I think of everyone as a member of my family and wouldn't be great if we could all get together and meet one another? We seem to get along very well and could talk forever about Liz, just by looking at how long the digests have become! A big group hug for everyone! Good night, good morning, or good day. (depending on what time you're reading this! I know it sounds kinda like The Truman Show!) hehe! Of course I will pay shipping and production costs and I will even pay with real US dollars (not this deteriorating Northern peso that my company pays me in). Getting pumped for the spotlight on Thursday. I'm guessing that the host will be Bill Welychka (VJ) who has openly touted her as one of his favorites (I've forced myself not to dislike him because of this tout, but he did use to have Michael Bolton hair and it's hard to forget that.) If past MuchMusic video play is a prediction for the future I would anticipate the following videos. Never Said Strange Loop Supernova Jealousy Rocket Boy Polyester Bride (haven't seen it played up here yet) Or at least 4 of these. Last month she was much more shaky and nervous, last night she rocked! I am so excited for the new york show. I am going with my 3 closest friends (and also liz lovers) as well as my 50 yr old gay aunt (who loves to see a powerful, sexy woman rock out on stage) Who is going to this show? I havent seen anyone mention it at all. Is this one sold out like the others? I am just curious. I will definitly be able to get a tape of the boston show on WBCN. So I will be happy to tape it for anyone who wants it. I don't feel like naming what other artists I love, they are very similar to all you others, except for Phish - it doesnt seem like liz and phish fans crossover too much. I think Phish is the greatest band out there these days. their shows are absolutely incredible and a mind blowing experience. I love them as much as I love Liz. So I was wondering how many phish fans there are on this list - Also, one of my favorite liz songs off of girlysounds is Go Speed Racer, that doesnt seem to get mentioned too often either. I love the lyrics and the tune and the whole thing - I would love for her to redo this one. oh yeah - I am 27 and have been listening to liz since guyville came out but I didnt begin to get hooked until whipsmart and then after I was mesmerized by ws, I re-listened to guyville and became really really hooked and then joined the mailing list, about 3 or 4 years ago. (wow, its been that long on the list, weird) 1 week and counting.... Since this song is associated with the "Summer of Love" and Haight-Ashbury; and the fact that it was performed live at Woodstock, I am going to infer that Liz is just using it as a metaphor for "Johnny's" drug-like hypnotism over her in the lyric, "Crimson and Clover, soon he's taken over all my senses (now)." TMK P.S. This is only my opinion, I welcome all debates. P.S.S. Only six days until Liz comes to DC. ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #27 ***********************************
