WBCN is infamous for airing live shows from Boston venues. If anyone in the Boston area is going to tape the show, email me -- I'd like to set up a trade for that show. :) - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com MeSmErIzInG - AnOtHeR LiZ PhAiR WeBsItE http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 22:29:05 -0500 From: "smilin' joe riley" Subject: new member here/cd recommendations hi, i'm a newly found liz fan since i saw her at the dallas lilith. i also got her whitechocolatespaceegg cd free from levi's phone survey so i have been able to hear her in concert and cd...my question: i've heard mp3's of 6'1 and i loved it, but after being a fan of wse, is the sound of the other albums gonna be a big (bad?) shock to me? if it's not, what album do you all suggest i pick up? thanx... anthony :) p.s. fyi on me: alanis, sarah, tori, sheryl, manson, nin are my fav. musicians...but i don't avoid any musicians, there are many more i like and i'm hoping this list is fun...am i allowed to post an introduction to the list? Indiepoppers would all do themselves a favor by stopping this constant harping on how above-average they are. Liz too quirky? Unlike those right-down-the- middle, ordinary, mainstream artists like, oh, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Iggy Pop, Korn, Meat Loaf, Billy Corgan, and the literally hundreds of other downright strange acts who are bazillion-sellers. You don't have to be plain-vanilla pretty boys like Third Eye Blind (a band I loathe) to sell a ton of records. You have to write songs that rock and/or that have a catchy melody or hook. That and a lot of promotion will sell your records. No hook and a ton of promotion will get you nowhere. It happens every month: Some label puts forth a ton of money to promote an act that doesn't have a single song that will stick in your head. It's doomed to failure. Similarly, an excellent album full of catchy tunes (like Jen Trynin's Gun Shy Trigger Happy, one of the best albums I've ever heard) will get nowhere if it gets no promotion. Liz is somewhere in the middle: She's getting a lot of promotion in relation to the commercial potential of whitechocolatespaceegg with "Polyester Bride" as its lead single. If Matador decided to promote the shit out of "What Makes You Happy" or "Johnny Feelgood," they could turn that around. Those songs will gain new fans. I don't think "Polyester Bride," while it is good and solid, is going to be an attention-getter. I am not criticizing Liz in any way whatsoever. But let's take a band that sounds eminently Matador-like: Marcy Playground. Their single "Sex and Candy" was no more facile than what Pavement or Liz do. However, it had a really, REALLY catchy chorus. I don't like the song or the band's entire album (which I've listened to several times). But you have to admit that that one song is catchy. I love Liz Phair. I love Trust Obey. I love Tricky. I love GVSB. But none of these acts are gonna sell out stadiums any time soon. They simply don't do that kind of music. However, you can most certainly do quality music that ALSO sells out the stadiums (Rolling Stones anyone?). That "we're not average" thing is called "Mattitude" by a lot of people in the music biz, referring to Matador's supercilious snottiness. It's exactly the same fucking thing as the popular kids who tormented and looked down on me (and I'm sure some of the rest of us here on this list) in high school. It's most often spread by college-radio-station people, indie record shop clerks and critics for big-city alternative press papers. It is lame. It makes me want to scream. But I get secret satifaction by **knowing** that most of those people secretly like Bon Jovi.
