Not only is the music altered, but there is also a slight change in lyrics. I think I might even like this new version better (heaven forbid!). Also, I haven't really been reading the digests lately, but it looks as if we're submitting top ten lists for favorite artists.... so, here are mine (in no order): (Liz is obviously included.....) - -Gus Gus - -Throwing Muses - -Sleater-Kinney - -Stereolab - -Pulp - -Portishead - -Jonathan Fire*Eater - -PJ Harvey - -Bob Dylan - -Bjork One more thing: I went to both the San Diego and Los Angeles Liz shows, and she played the same exact set. :( I was kinda disappointed, but what's a girl to do? The San Diego show was absolutely brilliant, and I got to meet Liz afterwards (I have pictures to prove it! Yay!). I might as well have just stood outside for the L.A. show 'cos there were so many friggin' people there. Dammit! However, some random, drunk girl gave me her backstage pass, so I got to meet the band....they were super nice! Anyhow, just thought I'd share.... Hope the spacing doesn't look real bad, either. As for Liz, I'm a new fan. I'd heard a lot about her, but never knew anyone who had any albums, then the other day I walk in to my local record store and they had wcse at one of those listening stations. I jumped at the chance to finally hear her, and was absolutely blown away by the music. I walked out of the store with album in hand. She will probably be on this list eventually, I just haven't heard enough to rank her a "favorite". Very, very good, though. According to the female friends I was with at the show, it's called a "hair comb." It's a gorgeous piece, with silver comb spikes and a beautiful attached butterfly with silver patterns on the wings, adorned with black and translucent beads. It had a flower (plastic?) attached to it when she threw it out, but that fell off in midflight and the guy behind me caught it. I've decided I'm gonna hold onto it and if I ever get married, I'll give it to my wife. (that's not a solicitation for marriage proposals hahaha) Anyway, I signed up to this list to share my excitement with people I'm sure will share it, and not look at me like many of my friends do when I show them how excited I am to have caught a "hair comb" at a show. I've been thinking of Liz and her attention (or lack of) she is recieving. Yes yes, she is critically acclaimed, magazines give her 4 stars and constantly name her the most promising song writer of the 90's, one of the most innovative guitarists of our time, smart, sexy, rocking, mature, daring, ground-breaking - the Indie Rock Queen, the Rock and Roll star for the 90's. Now I have a question. *WHY* did her album debut at #38, and then practically disapear off the charts? *WHY* aren't her videos and songs played in a heavier rotation on more mainstream stations? Here in Windsor (and the Detroit Michigan stations) I only heard POLYESTER BRIDE once! ONCE!! *WHY* doesn't she get more air-play? She gets wonderful reviews and write ups, but it doesn't seem like her actual material is being displayed properly! SHe needs more air time! ***I mean, all these amazing things are said about her, yet why is it that 9 times out of 10 when I tell someone my favorite singer is LIZ PHAIR, they say LIZ WHO?? WHo's that? NEver heard of her! 9 times out of ten.*** SUpernova got proper exposure...it is obvious she has the potential to be a gigantic star, if only her damn songs were played more. I called a radio station which DOES play LIz occasionally when POLYESTER BRIDE was first released as a single and asked for it...I spoke with the DJ for about 5 minutes about how much we liked LIz, and then he said, "Well, I'll try to get it on for ya." Never heard it. Like, dammit! Just play LIZ!! If *they* (much music, radio stations etc.) just played POLYESTER BRIDE as much as they play the new HOLE video, or better yet, the fucking BackStreet boys, we'd have a MEGA-star on our hands. It baffles me why she is not gigantic by now. I don't get it. Not that I really care if she is huge or not, she is still Liz to me, either way..probably better for us fans that she isn't gigantic, easier to see shows and stuff, more intimate...but it's weird...just frustrating that she is not heard on the radio HALF as much as she deserves...like, we all love her albums, and it is obvious her songs have a fierce grip on many many of us, and I just find it almost to be a shame that people are still saying "Oh, never heard of her." BUT, rock on Liz!! I had a second thought that perhaps it was something Canadian. Oh well.... About some WCSE extra track on an import. This sure makes me feel good about being an American. I've heard on the Sheryl list that some European cds of The Globe Sessions (sorry for getting off of track!) have extra tracks. Why is it always Americans that miss out on such great stuff and have to pay more for them if we just happen to stumble upon finding them? Sucks huh? The reason why I like Sheryl (to answer someone's question) is because she was the first cd I bought after being such a devoted fan of The Beatles for three years. I give her all the credit for exposing me to other artists, including Liz, because through being a fan of Sheryl, I heard of Lilith Fair. I could go on forever about why I like Sheryl, but I thought this was the shortest way of saying it. Now about the video......The more I think of it, it really freaks me out. I've watched the video three times now and of course, having such a photographic memory, I played the darn thing a million times in my head. What freaks me out is Liz's carrying those eggs and you have all of those footages of marriages and children. To me, I think there's some subliminal message to us young women (like me and perhaps high schoolers) to hold off marriage and wait. That's why the lyrics to Polyester Bride touches me so much. With her saying "you've got time," it sounds like Liz is talking to a younger crowd. I don't know what everybody thinks, but I just like to give in my opinion about it. Unfortunatly, my camera which was not supposed to flash flashed and got confiscated by the mean security men. Also, this guy tried to give Liz flowers but the guards wouldn't let him. He eventually screamed "Motherfuckers!!!" and rushed to the stage. Liz thanked him, and he announced how the guards wouldn't let him give her the flowers. The audience giggled and looked sympathetic. It was such a great show. Now, I love Tori Amos and consider her my second favorite artist and have seen her twice this year. But, it was interesting to see how Tori can play arenas and STRAIN to like like a ROCK star, whereas little Liz can play a small theater and blow the roof off the joint. Just a thought... I saw Liz and family walk into the theater unnoticed. Actually, I was waiting for her to arrive on a bus or car, but by the time I realized she was literally walking next to me she walked through the side doors. I'm, not sounding very coherent, but I've waited 5 years to see Liz live, so pardon my poor writing skills! - -Jeff By the way, the lighting during Explain it to Me before the curtains opened was so beautiful. Her silloette looked like it was underwater. I have it on my DSS satellite, along with M2 (the best music on tv now, not kidding. They play great music, blocks of artists or themes, and NO commercials. Just videos! I LOVE it!) If you want to watch MuchMusic come over to my house one night. We'll make popcorn too. *S* Eric ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 17:38:17 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: fan club status Hello, everyone. I just spoke with Carrie @ Matador regarding the possibilities of starting up that Liz Phair fan club. Well...it's a management call. I guess if Liz thinks it's cool and her management thinks it's cool, then Matador would probably help out. I don't think flooding her management with requests would do any good. I told her about this mailing list and mentioned that everyone on here is a fairly rabid and adoring fan. She took down my name and the name of the mailing list, and might possibly check this place out. So...be on your best behaviour, damn it :) None of that useless squabbling about the merits of "Flower" or the "lesser album" status of "Whip-Smart" :) Yes, we pretty much are a fan club already, somewhat of a community. Don't you think Liz would appreciate having a fan club, though? I mean, she sounds like such a huge fan of music, anyway; maybe this would tickle her fancy. My guess is the organization aspect of the whole thing would be a big pain in the ass...hmm. Anyway, I'll phone Carrie in a week or so to see if there's any interest on the other end. She didn't sound exACTly like she thought it might occur, but we'll see what happens. First an instrumental section (with me sitting there going.... "I know that, what is that, I know that music") Then at the very end, with the Nova logo on the screen, in the background you can hear, "you're a human supernova..." For those who don't know, Nova is a science series on Public Broadcasting produced in Boston. I saw the Portland show this past Sunday. The show opens with slides of Liz and associates. The slides are fun. You can tell that some of them are from the same photo session as the EIG cover. Most are sort of rowdy, which is not how she came of in the concert. At the PDX show, the slides had to go through twice, because the technician was adjusting everyone's guitars for so long. The drums were a little too loud so that her voice wasn't really prominent, which was unfortunate. Somehow I just expected her to belt it out more, but maybe that's not how her voice is. Some of the songs which came off the best were those from her new album, such as "whitechocolatespaceegg." "Flower" was really weird and shaky as a concert tune. She and her back-up sort of made funny faces at each other and looked like they were amused by or tired of singing it. "Fuck and run" was well-done with the full band. They really turned everything up for the lines "Im gonna spend.... alone." I was just a couple feet from the stage and could see her play list, which she kept checking. I won't bother to list it, because 1) someone else has probably already posted it and 2) isn't that sort of like somebody telling you what happens at the end of a novel before you get there? She smiled a lot and had a calm presence. She wore a lt. green short tank top, black slit skirt, and the sandal shoes. I hadn't realized she was so... buff. Weird. I can relate to the other person who said they felt a little let down after the show. I can't explain why, exactly, though. Perhaps when you look forward to something for long, it's inevitable. I was a little bit weirded out by the audience. They seemed to cheer the loudest for her most sensationalist lines ("I liked it" and "I'll fuck you till your dick is blue") and were lukewarm to some of the songs I was excited to hear her perform, like "Perfect World" and "What makes you happy." I turned around once and it seemed like the audience consisted of more men than women, but perhaps the men were just taller and stood out. I just wonder if there are some people who just think she's cool because she says "I want to fuck you like a dog." On another note, I never understood why in so many reviews they have to mention WS as inferior or disappointing. I really like the album. It makes you want to jump around. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Sep 1998 23:04:34 EDT From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: Piano works Ok everyone, I did my homework! The following list is where there are piano or related piano works in Liz's songs. I was quite shocked to find some songs had piano in them. I'm sure you'll notice that WCSE has a lot of fancy stuff going on. Piano: Canary (EIG) Chopsticks (WS) May Queen (WS) Animal Girl (Juvenilia) Big Tall Man (WCSE) Keyboard: Perfect World (WCSE) Uncle Alvarez (WCSE) Ride (WCSE) Organ: Johnny Feelgood (WCSE) Polyester Bride (WCSE) Love is Nothing (WCSE) So On Ahead (WCSE) Bass keyboard: Headache (WCSE) Accordion: Shitloads of Money (WCSE) Well, I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I was really surprised to find out that Big Tall Man had piano in it. I guess you can tell I'm a big fan of piano. Katie ():) "it's better to be liked" ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #24 ***********************************
