'50s and '60s home movies and civic-duty films (pretty lame in my opinion--been done so many times for the past 5 years--yes, the '50s were funny, har har) All this for a song that is country/folksy. Sorry, but it wasn't a case of form equal to function. As much as I love Liz, she has yet to produce a video that is in any way as intellectual as her music. Anyway, those of you who are also going... do you wanna hang out beforehand or afterward? I mean, since the show is only an hour long, it seems we'd have ample time to go and chat or something, meet each other. Email either me or Julia personally, and we can work something out. Socialization is imperative! I can't believe so many people are so excitedly posting all their other favorite artists... that hasn't happened before here, I don't think. While I don't feel like doing it myself, I will comment on a couple of things: Hole -- Patty Schemel said in the latest issue of SPIN that CelebSkin is not her masterpiece, and she doesn't like what the band has become. I can sort of see where she's coming from. I've barely listened to the new record at all for some reason. I read that entire SPIN article, and I've decided that Sheryl Crow is a much more genuine person, like Liz Phair. Sheryl Crow -- I can't wait for the new Sheryl Crow record to come out. I'm buying it first thing Tuesday. I love the new single. And I'm so glad that Sheryl Crow isn't going away, just because I hope it annoys the asshole-on-the-street who said in a 1996-or-7 MTV end-of-the-year music survey "Just so long as I don't ever have to hear anything from Sheryl Crow ever again..." (or something). Why do those of us who like her really like her? She rawks, man. She's a great storyteller, I love how she unabashedly makes classic rock (courtney love on the other hand comes up with her band's Hotel California just a few years after saying "The word 'rock and roll' is so polluted with... old dinosaurs... I don't wanna produce classic rock! I want progress!" uh.... YEAH). Plus Sheryl Crow is just really hot*. And I'm all for her trying to prove herself as a musician to all the people out there who think she's just a stupid popster who can't play or whatever. Anyway, that's all. I did see both Pj Harvey and Liz Phair on 120 Minutes last night, and I may post my thoughts on the latter video later on. Right now I have no opinion whatsoever. It was all I had been talking about for days. My friends were yawning every time I said "I'm seeing Liz in x days!". Got to the theater around 7:00 and got a spot near the front row. Show started after 8:30. The theater had 2 steps at the very front, and seeing as I was on the ground, my view was obstructed. Grrr. (I'm not the pushy kind who can snake their way up to the front.) So I had to bob my head left and right to watch the show. The sound seemed muffled to me; I couldn't hear her singing the lyrics, (although I could hear my neighbor's lyrics pretty well. Of course I sang along too.) And she sang for a little more than an hour... it was over all too soon. Maybe I was anticipating too much; maybe I pumped myself up too much. I was kind of depressed after the show. Anyone else feel that way? The slide show was interesting at first. But it made me think: "I guess she doesn't have any problem disliking her own image." Vanity? Perhaps. The woman is human. Maybe showing her naked body is a preemptive defense to deflect a deeper vulnerability. She did seem a little nervous; she commented that she knew a lot of people in the audience. I sensed she feared their judgement (when she couldn't hear certain comments that were yelled she asked for it to be repeated and said "What did you say? I want to know"). Chuck www.sfgate.com Phair Sexy And Not Shy At Warfield Neva Chonin, Chronicle Staff Critic Monday, September 28, 1998 ©1998 San Francisco Chronicle URL: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1998/09/28/DD5 8360.DTL ``Please, anyone who knows the words feel free to join in,'' Liz Phair told the audience at her sold-out show at the Warfield Friday night. And as soon as the fans heard the drolly explicit opening lines of ``Flower,'' they did: ``Every time I see your face/ I think of things unpure, unchaste . . . '' By the time Phair reached her final lilting litany of X-rated acts, half the theater was chanting along. It was an inspired turning of tables in which one woman's carnal disclosure expanded into a collective confession. Everyone in the house was playing the floozy and loving it, and Phair, for once, was off the sexual hook. This clever maneuver makes sense considering that Phair's 1998 comeback album, ``whitechocolatespaceegg'' -- released after a four-year hiatus devoted to marriage and motherhood -- is less concerned with an Ally McBeal-era quest for feminine fulfillment than it is with the complex dynamics of human relationships -- not just between lovers, but also mates, parents and children, friends. Quite a leap from the early '90s Phair, whose lyrical alter-egos talked the feminist talk but walked the erotic walk straight from one romantic disaster to another. Her brief hour-and-some-minutes set at the Warfield showed that Phair's new maturity of vision hasn't erased her intriguing contradictions, however. Even her stage was a study in opposites, combining romance with spare utilitarianism and a five-piece backup band in black with a backdrop of billowy white draping. Phair's outfit, a low-cut velveteen top with bare sides and a long, clinging black skirt, embodied the sexual potency of what Roland Barthes called ``the gap in the fabric'': a teasing glimpse of skin all the more enticing for what it doesn't show than what it does. Fans of both sexes -- though the souvenir -- stand sold only baby T-shirts and skimpy tank tops, leaving most males out in the cold -- cheered adoringly as Phair opened the set with a dreamy rendition of ``Explain It to Me,'' sung in an unexpectedly cool and confident drawl. With a band to lend her emotional security and a richer sound, the notoriously shy singer was in a relaxed, rocking mood. She whipped off her hair barrette and tossed it into the audience; she danced; she even laughed at the occasional technical glitch. Trading off between her red and ivory Fender guitars and occasionally abandoning her instruments altogether to play the sultry chanteuse, Phair quickly ran through such old favorites as ``Dance of the Seven Veils,'' ``Supernova,'' ``Mesmerizing'' and ``Cinco De Mayo,'' interspersed with a healthy smattering of newer material that included ``White Chocolate Space Egg,'' ``Polyester Bride,'' ``What Makes You Happy'' and ``Johnny Feelgood.'' Phair even indulged in a little stage chatter. At one point she preceded ``Support System'' (a paean to a ``man of action'') with a funny, rambling anecdote about seeing President Clinton's motorcade (``There were about 200 bicycles, then cops on motorcycles, then vans -- why vans?'') Such casual rapport with her audience signals a hefty step forward for a singer-songwriter who, despite the angry young woman status she derived from her brashly honest 1993 debut ``Exile in Guyville,'' has always suffered from debilitating stage fright. The encore offered Phair's only solo performance of the evening, a sweetly quavering rendition of ``Perfect World,'' a song off ``whitechocolate'' that captures a woman's fashion-fueled quest for perfection with the coy hook, ``I wanna be cool, tall, vulnerable and luscious.'' Playing alone in the spotlight, she briefly reclaimed the raw vulnerability of her last show at the Warfield some three years ago when she played with only her guitar and jittery nerves for backup. When the band returned for the final song, a bang-up rendition of Phair's unofficial anthem, ``F-- and Run,'' the relieved singer set her guitar aside and danced, shaking her hair and booty with the unself-conscious rhapsody of a teenager high on hormones. It was the loosest the woman who made it cool to be a loose woman has ever looked onstage, and considering the brevity of the set, the choice of closing songs was too appropriate to be accidental. Ever the tease, Phair still promises more than she delivers, sneaking out at the climactic moment and leaving her admirers begging for more. ©1998 San Francisco Chronicle Page D1 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 14:22:39 -0400 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: tastes Hey, has anybody noticed their tastes in Liz songs changing?? Thank god for dear souls who work for people who don't use tickets that they get for free. hehe I wish that idea for List t-shirts panned out it would be nice to see some list solidarity ;) Like any of you care, here are some of my favorities: Liz Sleater-Kinney Crowded House/Split Enz/Neil Finn Ani DiFranco INXS Frank Sinatra XTC PJ Harvey And various other non-related artists :) Nora ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 14:22:18 PDT From: "katie beach" Subject: crimson and clover at the risk of sounding naive i was wondering what the crimson and clover reference in "johnny feelgood" means? there is a similiar reference in elliott smith's new album and it got me intrigued. thanks in advance for the help, katie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 16:37:12 -0500 From: Daniel Osborne Subject: Japanese Version of WCSE I don't think this was discussed before, but I just learned that there is a Japanese import of whitehocolatespaceegg that has a bonus track at the end of it. The 17th track is "Hurricane Cindy" and is not available on the American version of wcse. I know that other people have heard Hurricane Cindy before because it's listed on some of the Top 10 lists. You can see a picture of the album on the link below, which will only be there for a couple of more days. If you really wanted to, you could bid on the album as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=32399813 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 21:05:09 EDT From: AngelLieb@aol.com Subject: MuchMusic? About MuchMusic, I've never heard of it and looked at my tv listings and couldn't find anything about it for Oct. 1. So, if it's possible, could someone please tell me more about what the heck MuchMusic is about and what channel it's on? Thanks. Thanks to Jennifer for the two songs she mentioned that contained piano works. I guess I'll go through all of the songs and see which have piano in them. For some reason, I find myself listening to a bunch of artists that have piano in their songs. (Sarah, Tori, Natalie) Another thing, for Liz playing Flower at her concerts, which part is she singing? That question poppped up in my head not too long ago. Well, that's my thought for now. Big group hug for everyone. Katie, MuchMusic is a Canadian video station, much like MTV (which is unavailable here except by satelite dish), although MuchMusic spends more time actually playing videos. ;) I know that Much is available in some areas of the States now, but I'm not sure which ones. If it's not in your local listings though, you probably are unable to get it. However, I will be taping the Spotlight on Thursday night, so if anyone is interested in a copy, just let me know. I already have all of Liz's videos on tape (with the exception of "Polyester Bride"), but I need better copies of a couple of them, so I'm really looking forward to this. I really was surprised when I saw the listing for the Spotlight on Liz. Usually they don't bother with artists who aren't a little more "known," so it was really great to see that they are featuring Liz. Now if only they'd put the "Polyester Bride" video into regular rotation.... I wouldn't say she scares me, but makes me dissapointed sometimes. Once I've written something and then listen to a Liz song, it brings me back down to earth. She couldn't write a bad song if her life depended on it. In interviews she always goes on about how she has learned to accept that is not a good guitarist and that it's too late to do anything about it. This may be true in an ultimate technical sense, but like Nirvana, R.E.M., and other bands with less than amazing technical ability, she knows what sounds good and how to write and great song. I definately separate in my mind technical ability from songwriting ability and I definately think the latter is a better asset. On top of that, she IS a great guitarist, whether she admits it or not. Sometimes this gets overlooked in the press with all the talk about her bad-girl image. The worst thing you can do, well at least the worst thing I did to myself, is use Liz as a benchmark. I first started writing songs about a year after I first heard EIG and Whip-Smart, and I didn't exactly try to sound like her, but I definately did use her as a gauge for how good my own songs were. After about two months I gave up songwriting completely because I was so depressed. It wasn't until I met some other guitarists that I began to realize that everyone starts out as a pretty crappy songwriter. So I picked up my guitar and wrote a bunch of crap for another year until I began to filter out the gems from the crap. I try not to use any other artists as a benchmark musically anymore - I need a few more years of playing until I feel ready to do that. Lyrically though, Liz is my god. I always ask myself "Would Liz say this?" and often when the answer is no, into the trash bin it goes. I have the same lyrical sensibilities in that I like to make songs about relationships and human dynamics. Lyrics are definately not easy but they can enhance a song so much when they're right that I get all high and mighty about it. I won't let a song past my bedroom door until the lyrics are good. I go through pages and pages of songs until something comes out right - I'm not good, just prolific. >>Anybody who owns the whip-smart tab book knows learning a liz song can be >>a bitch because she's a good guitar player. Anyway, if anyone wants tabs >>for these songs just let me know. There's a Whip-Smart tab book??? Wow, I want it. I wonder if I can still find it somewhere. Do you know anywhere I can order it? About the tabs - I would like to get the tabs for California and One Less Thing. Maybe I can figure out the bridge. I've always wanted to play California, I think the guitar line is awesome, but I never actually sat down to try and figure it out. Thanks. >>Hey I am sitting here watching Polyester Bride video, and is it just me or >>did they edit out one of Henry's verses?? That verse was already cut from the radio edit. They just used the radio edit version for the MTV video. It's only a time thing. It cuts the length of the song from something like 4 minutes to a more radio-friendly 3:40. I was hoping that the MTV version would have the full length, but alas, they too are mass media-marketing slaves (Perhaps the biggest there ever was). I don't know about how it is where you live, but the normally crappy 92.1 here in Tucson regularly played Polyester Bride from its introduction until late last week - I think it's off the playlist now. WCSE has also been on the CD store best seller lists here for the whole time. However, I figured that considering WCSE's quick slide down the Billboard charts that it wasn't the same situation in many places. What did you all think of the video, if you saw it? I think she's really trying to make a statement about this whole motherhood thing, at least a concious break with her past MTV image. That would make a great video for White Chocolate Space Egg, but I figured that there would be more stuff relating to Polyester Bride. I think perhaps she knew this was her one shot for a video for this album, and she used it to purvey the themes of the whole album in general, rather than Polyester Bride specifically. At the same time, it did cover all the stereotyped-housewife themes that PB makes a point of. I liked it - it was at least 500% more intelligent that the videos that MTV and VH-1 usually play - but I'm afraid people who aren't into Liz or haven't heard or read much about WCSE won't get it. Oh well, knowing MTV it will never be played. I hope VH-1 gives it some good airtime.
