I didn't arrive until 7:30pm, but found a nice spot near the front in center. Around 8pm, the lights went out and a slideshow began depicting Liz and company in a slew of photos, most of which I had never seen. Plenty of them from the "Guyville" era. Some of the photos looked like the photo shoot for the cover ot "Exile..." where Liz is in all her "glory". Very interesting to see. Finally, around 8:45pm, Liz comes out on stage looking amazingly beautiful. For all of you aesthetic/fashion folks, Liz was wearing a thin, skin-tight dress (crimson red/black) dress and her hair was down with the exception of a barrett which she eventually threw out to the audience. THE SETLIST: - -Explain It To Me - -6'1" - -Cinco de Mayo - -Support System - -Never Said - -Johnny Feelgood - -Dance Of The Seven Veils - -Uncle Alvarez - -Polyester Bride - -Supernova - -Flower - -What Makes You Happy - -Divorce Song - -White Chocolate Space Egg ENCORE: - -Perfect World - -Fuck And Run And not to sound like a broken record (I knew Ken already mentioned some of this), but one guy from the audience suggested "Carnivore" and Liz was like, "Carnivore? Well, I won't play 'Carnivore', but I will play 'Support System." Kinda interesting. The band consisted of a bass player, two guitarist (Liz included), a keyboardist, a drummer and a Joan Osborne look-alike back-up singer. Throughout the concert, I took MANY, MANY pictures. I think I was the only one, since I only saw my flashes. But, I'll be sure to share them with the list by putting them on my website soon. My only gripe with the concert was that is was so short. Liz only played for an hour. After the concert, my friend and I went to the back of the venue and waited to possibly greet Liz. Ultimately though, Liz snuck out into a nearby car. I did however, talk to Joan Osborne Jr. (I never got her name) and asked her to give Liz a card I made for her (yeah, I'm one of those dweeby kind of fans). She said she would be glad to. So, hopefully Liz will at least see it. My favorite parts of the concert was Liz's performance of "Dance Of The Seven Veils". Awesome! Anyway, that was my concert experience. And it was good. I hope everyone gets to see her. She's truly mesmerizing. For those who are unfamiliar with the program, it airs from Monday to Thursday, and each night a different artist is featured. I imagine that MuchMusic will be using this as their opportunity to debut the video for "Polyester Bride," and since the show is a half-hour long, they will likely play most of Liz's older videos as well, and possibly any interview or performance footage they may have. The show airs at 7:00 pm and 11:30 pm EST. Also, don't forget that Liz will be on the Tonight Show the night before (Wednesday) to perform. Don't forget to set your VCRs! What Fun! I've never spontaneously run into a Liz-lover. So many things about the last digest made me want to respond. Ok.. 1) Someone mentioned a Fan Club. Isn't this one? but it *would* be swell to organize well enough to get some cool new Liz music released just for us!!! If anyone wants to start it up, consider my dues in the mail. 2) Colin: I too am a songwriter/guitarist, recently in a band (we didn't do a Liz cover though, regrettably). Liz intimidates the hell out of me. She scares me to death. Someone posted a while back some quotes about Liz, and it was SonnyCameHome-what'sername that said Liz used to scare her, and I know how she feels. It's like I know I'll never be as good as her, she blows me away so much. And at the same time, I worry that I'll sound too much like her (if that's possible). And just this evening I realized that that's kind of a contradiction. It's like, I want to be like her, and I don't want to be like her at the same time. So I figure I'm doing great! : ) I'm glad I made that breakthrough though, cause I was kind of having a love/hate thing going on, and now it's all Love! 3) Jeff Larson is the coolest person! I just got the Liz video from him in the mail last night, so of course I stayed up til 1 watching it. Oh Mah Gawd! The New York Concert, she plays like ALL my fovorite songs!, and you can see her so well, and her guitar. What a bad-ass guitarist! And I had never seen any of her videos before, and she directed most of 'em! And I Thought her husband had directed one of her videos, but it didn't say that, what's up? And it was so cool that you (Jeff) sent Jenny a video already, when just today I wrote a not to you (Jenny) about how cool the video is! That video is now one of my most prized possessions. 4) I love the diversity of the digest. Last time, someone wrote he just couldn't understand how some people could not like Flower, and the very next mexsage was from someone whose least favorite songs was Flower, after the 20th time. : ) Hee hee. At first it was the one I always skipped on Guyville, but now I like to sing along. 5) I need sleep. Gotta get up tomorrow afternoon to assist in the production of Bikini Detectives! (:ruthie:) where do i start? i’m trying to figure out what to say without lapsing into gushiness. this alhum is AMAZING! i have been a liz fan since i was 14 and “exile in guyville” first came out, blasting in-your-face lyrics with great low-fi guitar sounds. now, 5 years later, liz’s third turn sounds a little different but no less wonderful. this album is a great collection of different sounds and diverse lyrics. there is some stuff reminiscent of EIG (#2, 4) and new sounds ranging from beautiful, haunting melodies (#3, 14) to great upbeat pop (#5, 10, 13) and everything in between. many reviews have talked about how her lyrics have become less in-your-face, since there isn’t quite so much blatant sexuality oozing here. instead we have different, but no less honest dives into love, marriage, and motherhood, and also some lyrics that so cryptic that i have yet to figure them out. whether you have been a liz fan for years, or are just learning about her now, there is something here for everyone, so PLAY PLAY PLAY!!! ruthie 9/26/98 #1: big, sweeping, crashing cymbals, sliding guitars. sparse bass and drums during verse, richer and fuller chorus. kind of ethereal. good opener. ***1/2 #2: old-school eig-rockin’ liz. man’s point of view. spoken word verses, wild (sung) chorus, with cool up-an-octave background vocals. ***1/4 #3: this song is so beautiful i don’t even know what else to say. sparse, quiet accompinent, some beautiful violin. simple, gorgeous, honest, perfect. PLAY!!! ****+ #4: liz’s un-p.c. take on the “bad boy” syndrome. ROCKIN! funky and groovy slidy guitars. this could have been straight off EIG (it was written at the same time as a lot of the songs on that album). perfect. play!!! ****++ #5: liz makes a perfect pop song. one of the more “produced” songs here, but great nonetheless. super- catchy chorus.. pop it in and sing along***3/4 #6: cynical love song about discovering mr right is mr boring. or something. kind of mellow and nice. ***1/2 #7: liz breaks out the harmonica again. blues-y, a little country. different, but i think it works. play it for a change of pace. ***1/2 #8: hmm.. a hard one to describe. very mellow, a story-telling song. nice guitars, some sparse piano vocally a little restrained, until the bridge where it opens up—the bridge is the best part. ***1/4 #9 the only song that doesn’t really do much for me. slow, long (5 min.), not terribly interesting musically. wonderful lyrics, though. speeds up in the last minute, which is better. **1/2 #10: beautiful song with an edge. one of my favs. brutally honest lyrics that make me want to cry half the time. this is liz at her best. PLAY!! **** #11: funky beat, funky keyboards, funky lamaz breathing in the background. great little mumbling of lyrics near the end. i really like it. ***1/2 #12: upbeat, urgent, really moves along. somewhat cryptic lyrics. i like it better than the demo version from ’96. ***1/4 #13: the poppiest song on the album. you can’t help but sing and get up and dance to it. complete with toy paino-sounding keyboards. FUN FUN FUN!! ****+ #14: i’ve loved this song since i hear the demos for it in ’96. beautiful ballad, mellow—the guys from rem ( peter buck, mike mills, and bill berry) back her up, and you can tell. lovely. **** #15: a remake of an old song from the girlysounds recording, parts of which appeared in combo platter, from the supernova single. touch-in-cheek lyrics set to cheery—but really good—music appropriate to the touch-in-cheek-ness of the song. ***1/2 #16: simple—liz with her guitar. neat little song about high school and friends and popularity. great lyrics. ***3/4 - -- *******Deceive*******Inveigle*******Obfuscate******* "Wild and unwise, I wanna be mesmerizing, too" "All the stars up in heaven were rushed by an angel, to see the light of your face better" --Liz Phair "I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who's still around the morning after" --Elliott Smith ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 1998 22:14:53 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message [This message bounced on its way to the list as it contained HTML-encoding. What's more, very few songwriters can reach both sexes like Liz can. Definitely no other female artist is even in the ballpark with Liz (with respect to men), as far as I'm concerned. Sarah McLachlan? Courtney Love? Please. To the lyrics: "Temper my hatred with peace/Weave my disgust into fame/And watch how fast they run to the flame..." I think this one of Liz's signature lyrics (from Help Me, Mary) - especially since it appears that she has accomplished this feat (disgust into fame). "With all of the time in the world to spend it/Wild and unwise/I wanna be mesmerizing too/Mesmerizing too/Mesmerizing to you..." I think this song sounds like the 'Stones more than any other (guitar players agree?) Don't we all want to be mesmerizing (too)? Or, from Supernova: "A giant, flying friction blast?" She's a genius. "That it's harder to be friends than lovers/And you shouldn't try to mix the two/Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy/Then you know that the problem is you..." Divorce Song. 'Nuff said. "You're probably shy and introspective/That's not part of my objective..." Liz's ultimate lust song... No singer (M or F) has ever produced such poignant lyrics... and since Flower has been getting a lot of attention lately... I'd like to say that while it probably doesn't rate in my top 20 or so Liz songs, I like the high-low voice interaction and that guitar "sound" that repeats throughout (is that a guitar?). I've never heard anything like it, but it's pretty cool, especially when you crank up the volume. "You got up out of bed/You said you had a lot of work to do/But I heard the rest in your head... You almost felt bad/You said that I should call you up but/I knew much better than that..." I think Liz has an innate ability to "read" and see "through" people - especially the guys she sings about in her songs (retrospectively maybe, in some cases). And her talent for putting her observations into lyrics, is... well, simply Liz! On trying to get your friends into Liz: It's really hard because her music isn't "striking" in the way that, say, Pearl Jam and Phish were for me. When I bought Pearl Jam's "Ten" (after hearing Alive and Evenflow on the radio, of course), I listened to the whole album and I thought, "this band just has a great, powerful sound." I loved them instantly. I didn't have to listen to the lyrics. Liz is more subtle. You may like only a handful of songs when you first listen to one of her albums. But, as you may have also experienced, after a month of listening, you LOVE EVERY SONG (or most). But when I play my favorite Liz songs for friends, they all usually just shrug and mumble something like, "yeah... it's ok..." It may be because Liz doesn't have "hit" songs (with Supernova and Polyester Bride being exceptions) that jump out at people, like Pearl Jam did for me. It could also be that many non-fans already have a preconceived notion of what Liz Phair is supposed to sound like (Supernova?). As a result, playing a song like Shatter for someone is really a major waste of time, as I've learned (even though the guitar AND lyrics in Shatter are so AMAZING - how could anyone ignore them?!). I think that only after you give her lyrics a chance to speak to you can anyone really appreciate Liz's music. And that's why so few of us do. I guess most of you are aware that I'm under 21 because I was complaining before about not being able to see Liz Oct. 17 in Minneapolis. I just turned 20 this August. As for my other favorite artists, some of these are my favorite bands because of nostalgia (Green Day, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins), but other than Liz Phair I like: Fiona Apple TORI AMOS Erykah Badu Beck Ani DiFranco Lauryn Hill JONI MITCHELL Janis Joplin Radiohead R.E.M. (their vintage material, mostly, not their new stuff!) Simon & Garfunkel I have been listening to Liz Phair ever since I was 16. Eastman" Subject: Re: support-system-digest V1 #19 I too am nineteen and am a sophomore at Pomona College in Claremont, California (hi Jacob. By the way, when is that religious history paper due for Professor Dornish?). I think a show of appreciation for Liz would be very appropriate (I used to work at a Hallmark, it's my job to fabricate reasons to buy cards). What I will do is purchase a card (of course, Gold Crown from Hallmark), sign it with a brief note, and pass it on to Jacob (for reasons of proximity) and a few other Pomona kids who want to show their appreciation. Jacob will post that he has the card, and folks from the list will mail him privately asking for the card. When the card is full of names and stuff, whoever's got it will send it to Liz Phair or Matador or what have you, and buy a new one and keep it going. Sound good? I feel like I should say this. I like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, the Pixies, Pavement, the Beastie Boys, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Elliot Smith, Sublime, Rocket From the Crypt, some garage rock, you know, some other stuff. And I don't like "Flower." Sorry. I just can't dance to it. So I'll do that card thing. I hope it works out. Love, Drew. - - Drew S.
