Great show of course. I recorded it & it came out quite well. Anything to trade? I have all the albums & juvenalia & Girlysound. Oh yes. I sneaked past the security and got into the backstage club/bar with free drinks. After about 10 mins Liz came out. After she finished talking to some suit types, I cornered her and thanked for a great show. She signed Vol. 1 of the Girlysound CD for me on the CD itself. Couldn't find Stormy or the tall guy. I know some of >>you have figured stuff I havent and vice versa. That sounds great, but I probably won't be much help as far as trading songs I've figured out. Generally I just take what I've found on OLGA or whatever (I'm sure you already know, but the Guyville mailing list site has fairly accurate chords on lots of Liz songs - at least the easy ones), and then improvise on top of it. I try not to stick into simply playing covers exactly as they were written - it seems cheesy to me unless I really add something to it or change its sound, I guess that's just me. Trading ideas and figuring out new songs would be good. There's a bunch of Liz songs, especially from Girlysounds, that I've wanted to play for a long time and they are just evading me figuring them out - I would love to have some new Liz songs to play. She was all of that and mesmerizing too! There was no opening act but there was a lengthy slide presentation prior to Liz's set. Someone posted awhile back wondering if that was Ms. Phair's nipple on the front of EIG. As a matter of fact, if you see the show and there is a slide show, watch! There is much more Liz exposure than one digitized nipple-worth the price of admission alone! Anyway, the show rocked and the play list was identical to San Diego's so I won't repeat it here. WS was my first Liz purchase, and I loved it immediately. - --- end of quote --- I haven't figured this one out either. I've been working on an article (a Music in Review type of thing) on Liz for our school magazine, so I've been listening to her non-stop (even setting aside my new and beloved Belle & Sebastian for days at a time). Whip-Smart, I must say, is my favorite Liz album. And I have almost everything, so I feel that I my opinion is valid (although I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me). It's just a complete adventure. I love every song on WS, even (and especially) "Shane" and "Dogs of LA". I kinda think of it like, if one of Francesca Lia Block's books was made into a kick-ass movie, WS would be the perfect soundtrack. There's so much texture and variety. I guess I can honestly say that it is my favorite album overall. Don't get me wrong, Exile is in my top five, but it's just not the same experience . . . As for top ten: 1. Dogs of LA 2. The set list for San Diego was mentioned in the last digest, and she pretty much stuck to it for the L.A. show last night except she added "Mesmering" which I was very excited about! For the San Diego show I wasn't in the front row (close to it, but not the very front) and for the L.A. show I was and it was incredible so I guess I would have to say I enjoyed the L.A. show more. The shows start exactly 30 minutes after the time it says on the tickets. There is a slide show that lasts 30 minutes and it is old pictures of her and with background music. I won't say what bands she chose, I'll leave some mystery. She said her dad was at the San Diego show and she said "hi dad" but she didn't mention him at the L.A. show. In San Diego, she said the infamous Henry was in the slide show pictures. Among other little tidbits from San Diego: Before she sang Johhny Feelgood, she said, "And it's not about physical abuse!". After she sang Support System, she said, "I like that one!". She was very smiley and seemed to be enjoying herself both nights. The L.A. audience was more into it than San Diego. In L.A. someone had asked her to say Happy Birthday to a girl in the audience, and she obliged and I thought, "She is so nice!". She looked great! She didn't wear a lot of makeup. For San Diego, she wore a long black skirt with slits up the sides with a grey glittery tank. She wore black and white rubbery, clunky-type sandals. (Sorry, I'm not good at describing fashion) For L.A., she wore a jersey tri-colored dress that had a very sexy low back to it. Her set runs about an hour and she does one encore. I was a little bummed that it was kinda short, but I can't really complain because I had a blast. If I could fly to the San Francisco show, I would! Amazingly enough it completely exceeded my expectations. I have loved her for about five years, and have never had the chance to experience her live, and was always saddened to hear that she wasn't too comfortable on stage. For that reason, I never expected her to exude such confidence, poise, humor and sweetness as she did last night in LA. Her voice sounded amazing, she looked stunning and the entire show was one I will remember for a long time to come. I have about a million stories to relay about Liz's music and its effect on my life, but it would take a while to write them all down. The most recent though is about the part in Polyester Bride where she sings "You've got time, but I don't believe him..." I graduated from college in the spring, moved from beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan back into my parent's house in LA, and went through a painful break up with a boy who is far away, and needless to say "post college depression" holds an entirely new meaning to me. Anyway, the fact that WCSE came out in the midst of my unhappiness could not have been better. As always, Liz inspires me to kick myself in the ass and move on, and when I hear her sing those lines "you've got time" (and the fact that she didn't believe it either) I feel quite comforted. Anyway, I hope all of you get to experience her live as well, if not on this tour, then some time in the future. ttfn, Rebecca ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 14:17:25 -0700 From: George Song Subject: liz tix ok...talk about last second...=) i have ONE extra ticket for tonight's SF warfield show...general admin floor for $22.50 anyone interested? george ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 18:22:56 EDT From: MangoHula@aol.com Subject: ben lee and liz i was sitting at work today listening to ben lee's album 'grandpaw would' (this boy can put the grinch in a good mood) and i got bored and decided to actually read the liner notes.......(is that what they are called?) when much to my surprise i noticed liz's name mentioned..........."we recorded around the corner at Idful studios for a week during which time lovely people like Rebecca Gates and Liz Phair popped in and sung on 'pop queen' and 'away with the pixies', respectively"........he even called her 'lovely' =) ..............I'm sure this has already been mentioned here at some time or another, but, silly me for not even recognizing that liz was even on the album! check out ben lee if you have yet to do so, he rocks my world!! thanks, ~lynda ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 17:30:54 -0400 From: "Jennifer Sayler" Subject: Sweet Pretty soul-Me? Hope this gives everyone a little insight into Liz's set in La-La Land. Concert Review Liz Phair - 24 September 1998 The Mayan Theater Los Angeles, California Having been a long-time fan of Liz Phair's, it was with great anticipation that I headed to the Mayan Theater in downtown LA last night to see her. When the Phair One last toured, I was living in Germany and as a result had never witnessed her live before last night. Fianly, after many years of waiting, my chance to see her perform had come. Arriving at the theater about 45 minutes ahead of show time, I made a quick check of the surroundings in which I found myself, to ensure that my car would indeed be safe while I saw the show, and, after being gouged by the parking company for ten bucks, made my way inside. The theater itself is an old 1930's-era movie house that has been converted into a small concert venue. It holds probably 800 closely packed bodies on the floor and another two hundred or so in the balcony. The lobby is small and has a will call ticket window, a small bar and not much else. The main showroom, which is approximately 55 feet wide by forty feet deep, has a well-stocked bar against the wall farthest from the stage. Drink prices were surprisingly reasonable - $3.00 for a Budweiser or Bud Light, $3.50 for Heineken and Corona. No alcohol is allowed either in the "pit" in front of the stage or outside in the smoking areas. The seating plan is general admission, although there are a few tables sans chairs along the railing between the "pit" and the rest of the main room and along the back wall as well. One huge drawback is that the only restrooms in the theater are on the mezannine level between the floor and balcony, and I noticed neither an elevator nor a rampway for patrons in wheelchairs. The décor of the Mayan is exactly as the name implies - Mayan. The ceilings and walls are covered with beautiful Mayan-influenced woodcarvings and tapestries and the center of the ceiling has a gorgeous hanging artifice that resembles an ornate Mayan depiction of the sun. All in all, the theater is cozy and well preserved, if a bit dimly lit (What was that gooey stuff I stepped in??). Approximately ten minutes prior to the start of the show, the volume of the pre-show music was raised and a slide show of photos of Liz and her bandmates were projected onto the curtains covering the stage. Then, at about fifteen minutes past 8:00 P.M., the crowd began to cheer as people detected movement behind the curtains and the house lights dimmed. From behind the curtain, the band began to play Explain It To Me (EIG). As Liz began singing the lyrics, the curtains parted revealing she and her band to the crowd. The set, as a whole, represented a good mix of old and new material, with six songs off her latest album, whitechocolatespaceegg, three from 1994's Whip Smart and eight from her 1993 debut, Exile In Guyville. Most of the selections she played were upbeat numbers, with a few slower numbers interspersed throughout the set. The pacing of the set was such that the show never dragged at any moment and it seemed to move from high point to slightly-less-high point, then back to another high point. Her band was tight and well-rehearsed, playing with a good use of dynamics and restraint, allowing Liz to be the focal point of the show. The mix, however, at least from my seat up in the balcony, was a little rough. Too much gain and treble overall and Liz's vocals were often tough to hear above the band. This was especially true on Flower (EIG), when the guitar, tape loop and backup vocalist all were more present in the mix than Liz's voice. The acoustics of the theater are good, so a little fine tuning of the mix might have been benficial. Again, because I was in the balcony, this might not have ben the case down on the floor. The stage set was sparse, with few lighting effects and only a backdrop sheet which also doubled as a video/lighting effect projection screen to enhance the visual experience. Just musicians and music - A rarity on today's concert scene. From the start it was apparent that Liz's much-publicized stage fright is indeed a thing of the past. Smiling and confident as she strode to the mic to sing each song, her manner on stage was relaxed and playful, sometimes dancing, other times laughing or simply grinning at the fun she appeared to be having. At one point, just before playing Uncle Alvarez (WCSE), a man yelled out from the crowd that someone, who apparently is an old friend of Liz's, said "Hi," to which Liz said, "Oh, tell her 'Hi' too. Is she still in San Francisco?" This from a woman who suffers from "terrible stage fright?" Like I said - A thing of the past. Liz's guitar work was spot-on throughout, the only exception being Perfect World, when she flubbed the first run-through of the pre-chorus fingerpicking, chuckled slightly about it and then carried on as if nothing had happened. Similarly, her voice was great throughout, with her work over the past four years with a vocal coach showing to great benefit. Her voice never cracked once or wavered on the edge of her range. Quite the opposite was true. During the choruses of Dance Of The Seven Veils (EIG), she sang the highest parts and let her background vocalist take the lower part, a move which paid off well in the overall delivery of the song's lyrics. Another standout number was Mesmerizing, which was transformed into a swampy, almost Creedence Clearwater Revival-like song by changing the beat slightly and adding a bass line that made me feel like I was down among the cypress trees in Louisiana, eating jambalaya. Overall, the show, while not a rock 'n' roll spectacular on par with The Rolling Stones or even Nine Inch Nails, was a good vehicle to present Liz's songs and talents. Seeing as her talent is writing incredibly catchy songs, you couldn't ask for much more and Liz Phair fans will be well pleased.
