And although I've already pointed mine out to the list, I feel like everyone else - they change all the time. I was listenin' to the Girlysound tapes and so many songs that I somehow forgot about came back to me. I'm so glad Liz Phair was born. Anyway, I don't have too much to say except that I'm REALLY excited for Friday for the San Francisco concert Liz Phair is performing. I know a few of you will be there. So to let all of you know who are attending, if you see a long-haired 21 year-old with his mouth gaping open, that'll be me. Yeah, like I'm going to be the only one. And to add to yet another poll... "Who are your other favorite musicians?" I guess it's more of a question than a poll. Hopefully some of you will respond. That way I won't feel like a dork for trying to start some sort of fan- bonding. Heh heh. For me, Liz Phair tops the list... but my other favorites: - -Paula Cole - -Aimee Mann - -Jen Trynin - -Heather Nova - -PJ Harvey - -Patty Griffin - -Sheryl Crow - -Ben Harper - -Freedy Johnston - -Ani DiFranco - -Sophie B. Phair doesn't get too much airplay over here (not like what I imagine your stations to do), but her songs keep being played on our radio. And the Dutch VPRO-show got to be sort of a classic too, didn't it? That station sure plugged in rather early. 2. Australian shows As far as I know, Liz never toured outside the US and Canada. I'd >hate for this to end up like some talk show theme ("Liz Phair fans, and >their traumas she's made sense of in song"...next on Sally) It's the hard hitting lyrics that do it for me too...Liz puts her finger on detail so finely, yet so unpoetically. She is using the exact same language and words that we use, only she is hitting *it* right on the head every damn time! (*IT* meaning whatever it is she is singing about.) example: "Did you think that I knew what I was doing when I said that I had to grow up on my own for a while??? (and later) If I knew what I was doing I sure as fuck wouldn't be here." -(From "ONE LESS THING.") "I don't have what it takes to stay with you And I'm leaving in under ten days, it's not what I'd planned But anyway, you know, by and large anywhere I go I won't find anyone who loves me enough to make you look bad..." -(From: "If I Ever Pay You Back.") ***She just has a pure and simple way of putting things, so straight forward, and so in touch with detail...I don't know how else to word how perfect her lyrics are, it's like she says all the things that someone wants to say to someone else when in an emotional crisis!!!fucking amazing. "ANd it goes round in circles, one night is lovely, the next is brutal." --Go On Ahead. I'm not even going to get into songs like Divorce Song and Shatter, because they are PRIME examples of her fantastic ability to craft amazing lines like the above, but I would have to say, it is lines like those that do it for me with her. NO other singer/band that I am into has ever affected me the way Liz Phair has - sounds like cheese, but it's true. She changed the way I look at music, relationships - I have listened to her music EVERY DAY - without exception - for close to 5 years, and (trying not to sound like a fucking Tony Robbins promo commercial) she really has changed my life!!!! Even her history. The fact that she whipped out a 4-track and made a bunch of songs just because she had them in her is so fucking brave and just downright COOL!!!! I know she is not the only singer alive to pull out the 4-track, but to make little demo tapes as amazing as the GirlySound Cassettes from her bedroom is just mind blowing! I figure she's a wonderful "freak of nature" in her own right, a true "one in a million girl" and I can't even bring myself to lump her in a category like "ALTERNA-Girls" or *cringe* "ROCKER GRRRRRRRRLs" (god i hate that) because she just seems different. She is quirky, and kinda geeky sometimes, and kinda shy and she used to be kinda stoned sounding in interviews and kinda sexy and so damn innovative and imaginative with her guitar and lyrics - - there really is no category to put her in. I mean, i asked myself one question while listening to UNCLE ALVAREZ. "What kind of music is this?" Is it rock? Pop? Alternative? It's just a song! She made a song and it doesn't really need to have any labels - it just rocks - as does all her music. Most probably skipped over this...no problem - I'm just damn glad I get the opportunity to see her live twice this October, making 3 times this year! I've never been part of a fan club or even a listserve like this before (except a brief stint on a Sarah McLachlan list, which I quit within a week - all the contributors were immature, whiny and hardly discussed the supposed subject at all). I wholeheartedly support Chuck's new thread idea - and thanks, Chuck, for starting us off. Your insights were thought-provoking and refreshing. I'll contribute some of my own soon. I also like how you gave reasons for your Top 10 choices - your take on May Queen was the best! I agree that Cinco de Mayo is a great driving song, as is the rest of Whipsmart. (BTW, I'm probably one of the few out here who remember "you can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay...") I'm curious - can someone explain to me why Whipsmart is considered by some to be "less worthy" than Liz's other releases? WS was my first Liz purchase, and I loved it immediately. I bought EIG afterwards, and like Nicole said, it took a while to grow on me (which seems incredible now).
