It seemed like an unrealistic request at the time and nothing's changed since, but...I'm still hankering for those songs. I've never been apart of a Fan Club before. Has anyone out there ever started a Fan Club or been involved with a Fan Club before? Are these normally affiliated with the record companies, or are they generally separate? I'd be willing to pay dues if it involved any perks (merchandise, unreleased songs, etc). Maybe we could all be invited to some special engagement or something. Chuck ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Sep 1998 04:28:41 -0400 From: "Chris DeLisle" Subject: a new thread? I've been gone a few weeks thanks to a move back to Michigan, and so I've missed out on a lot of Liz for a while -- thank God, though, that I found out (on this list) that tickets were on sale for the Pontiac, MI show (got two tickets tonight -- hear me belt out my Beatlemania scream!). What do you say we relate just exactly WHY Liz is so important in our lives, eh? I mean, yeah...she rocks...and...she's put out a couple of immortal albums...and...she seems to be a really cool human being with all of the people who have been lucky enough to meet her...but WHY? Why are we all here to discuss one Liz Phair? It's nice to know that teenagers and thirty and fortysomethings alike love her, but what's the connection? I generally blow off any generic music fan or artist who just says "you know...it's like..the MUSIC -- it's in the music." Well, tell me brothers and sisters, what emotional experiences have you felt from the music? I'd hate for this to end up like some talk show theme ("Liz Phair fans, and their traumas she's made sense of in song"...next on Sally), but it might (with an emphasis on "might") be worth a try. I'll make the first leap in a second. Top 10? Wow. Lemme see. Today? 1) Divorce Song (I think the harmonica solo hooked me first and forever) 1) Strange Loop ("I only wanted more than I knew" -- see item below) 3) Perfect World (yep) 4) What Makes You Happy (yep) 5) Jealousy (how funky, danceable and rockin' can this girl get?) 6) Baby Got Going (great vocal performance -- throw the pedal down) 7) Stratford-On-Guy (what is that Galaxie 500 video? Anyone?) 8) May Queen (rarely does a song that makes absolutely no sense to me move me like this one -- I think even "I Am The Walrus" or some of Dylan's surreal mid-60's songs make more sense to me than this song does -- yet, the emotion follows through) 9) Johnny Feelgood (it irritates me when writers have nothing better to say than this song "harkens back to the gritty girly/slut days" or whatever - -- Piss off!) 10) Shatter (makes ME feel like I've just been through a wreck) Near misses: Support System, Explain It To Me, Ride, Love Is Nothing, 6'1", Cinco de Mayo (a great driving song -- why don't people like this one again?), Headache, about forty others. Certain lines of Liz's just stick out for me: "I only wanted more than I knew"..."you / never could explain it to me"..."I know the girls that live inside your world"..."he's looking at you / he's laughing at you / it's HAPPENING"..."I don't know if I could drive a car / fast enough to get to where you are"...among hundreds. She just manipulates those syllables or something -- it's a real gift she has. They talk about how great the "phrasing" is of blues and jazz singers -- but I don't know, no singer does it for me like Liz does. I don't think I ever realized how great "Strange Loop" was until one of my best friends (who I had been in love with for a few years) got married and that last line kicked me so far UP into my ass I've not yet really recovered. I'm writing an appendix (which may never be completed) on Liz Phair to a book (which will most definitely never be completed :) ) with the last line of "Strange Loop" as the title. Love is nothing, indeed. I am going to see Liz Phair at Roseland on October 8th! That makes two Liz Phair live performances for me in four months! That's pretty good considering before the Lilith Fair I had never seen her play live and I am in my seventh year of loving her music, ever since I was a sophomore in high school and now I am a senior in college . I feel like the show at Roseland will be more real than at Lilith because at Lilith, I was really far away so I could barely see her and she played a really short set and that experience for me was ruined anyway because of the dork I went to the concert with. I promised myself I would see Liz Phair again in a smaller venue, with only girl friends and now I will do it! I really need Liz Phair to play "Fuck and Run" because to me that it is her signature song and it is the song that first got me interested in her music and because it is one of my personal anthems . I needed to hear it at Lilith really badly and she didn't play it, so I think that if it looks like she's not going to play it at Roseland, I will be in a small enuf setting to scream "Play 'Fuck and Run'!". She might even hear me. I'm sure this is old news by now, but did anyone notice that they played "Johnny Feelgood" in the season premiere of "Party of Five" last week? They played it really conspicuously in a scene in which Julia is discussing cute guys with her new roommate. Now, I can't figure out if the song was meant to be heard as if if was playing on Julia's CD player, or if it was just supposed to be incidental music playing to set the mood of the scene. As I watched, my mouth hung open for the whole scene and I couldn't even pay attention to the dialogue because I was distracted by listening to the song. However, I am not too pleased that the song was even used on the very mainstream, pop culture friendly "Party of Five". I'm all for more Liz Phair awareness but that doesn't mean I want her image and music to be sold out and trivialized all in the name of selling more albums. I want her music to sell well so that more people can hear her quality music, but it just smacks of nauseating hearing her stuff plopped in the middle of the teenybopper tv revolution. Much like many others before me have said, this represents my taste at the moment and changes often. So, here it is, in no particular order: 10. Divorce Song (Exile) 9. Help Me Mary (Exile) 8. Fuck And Run (Exile) 7. Headache (WCSE) 6. What Makes You Happy (WCSE) 5. Love Is Nothing (WCSE) 4. Only Son (WCSE) 3. Easy (Girlysounds) 2. Don't Be So In Love With Yourself (Girlysounds) 1. Can't Get Out Of What I'm Into (Girlysounds) There were too many honorable mentions to be mentioned. As for the issue of "number zero", the least favorite song, I would have to say mine is Flower. I realize that if not for the publicity surrounding Flower about 5 years ago, I might not have ever heard of Liz Phair, let alone bought her albums. For that I am grateful. Whomever it was that said "It was good for the first 20 times, but..." I agree with you on that point. It has been demoted to one of the songs that I usually skip over when I pop Exile in the CD player. Before the backlash comes...this is just one person's humble opinion. This is my first time posting, so I have a variety of things to say. First, as a very belated response to the age poll, I am 20. I first got into Liz when my I stayed at my brother's girlfriend's house in New Orleans before college; I guess I was 17. She had every BoyzIIMen and Mariah Carey and MC-whatever CD in existence and there was only one I'd never heard of: Exile in Guyville. It was amazing. Turns out it was the one CD in her collection that she hated (is it any surprise?...her tastes leave a little to be desired.) So she let me take it; I still have a big GINA written in permanent marker on top of the CD to ward me off from every joining her musical tastes. I bought Whip-Smart when I got home, and whenever I visit New Orleans I still have to bring all my Liz CDs along; there's a huge association for me. So maybe I fit into the category of "male Liz fan under 21", but I am sure it doesn't have anything to do with her pottymouth image or the song "flower". I was attracted to Liz much more musically than lyrically at first. I have been playing guitar for 4 years now, since just before my introduction to her music, and it's her sound I love the most. I really agree with the review of EIG that said "Phair uses lo-fi as a weapon, not a statement". She says her sound was more out of necessity than anything else, but I have been trying to achieve the same out of my guitar forever. I have never been attracted to electronica and have been saddened by the decline in rock recently. Her lyrics though are just icing on the cake. I have been writing songs for the last couple of years and I just don't have the lyrical talent of Liz. I was listening to "Hello, Sailor" from Girlysounds last night and I was just amazed at her lyrical ability. I read an interview in which she said that lyrics don't come naturally for her, but she really has to work at it. Well then I give her credit for her work ethic, because I have been working at it for a while and my songs come off more cliche-ridden than a book of quotent quotables. I have been on a Liz kick ever since WCSE came out, and have been surfing the web reading all her old interviews and articles. Its rare to find someone so intelligent in the music biz. I have been impressed by her influences as well. I always like it when artists list their influences and they gel so well with mine. REM is like that, and Liz. She always lists Jesus Christ Superstar as one of the things that got her interested in rock, and I was amazed. That's one of my favorite albums. (Convincing my other musician friends that a rock opera about Jesus could enhance their music is somewhat harder...). When I actually turned off the constant repeat button on my CD player and put a something besides WCSE in (Early last week), I began going through a retrospective of her earlier work. First it was Whip-Smart (My friends kept bugging me with, "Didn't we just hear this song?"), then it was the WSCE Demos/Studio Recordings and now I'm on GirlySounds. I really think I like some of her demos more then the actual albums, if only because there's a more direct and lo-fi sound. I'm amazed by some of the songs that didn't make it. I'm sure most of you already have your opinions on those songs, but here's my list of the best songs that didn't make it to the albums (In no particular order): Stuck on an Island Desperado Theme (Acoustic Version) Freak of Nature Waiting for the Bird Hello, Sailor (This pretty much only fits with post-Gulf war, but its still a great song) Beg Me (Don't be So) In Love With Yourself (I think this takes the cake as the best song that isn't on an album for me) There would be more, but they were pretty much taken care of by Juvenailia. As far as the albums go, I think Exile is my favorite album in my whole CD collection (which is rather considerable at several hundred, thank you BMG). Liz fits the singer-songwriter genre just perfectly for me. If there were some songs I was dissapointed didn't make it onto other CDs, that same statement definately does not apply to EIG. The whole thing fits together so well as a cohesive unit that I couldn't image adding something or taking something away. I always get a kick introducing new people to Liz. My newest victim is my friend Ray. I nabbed him with the WSCE Demos last week and now he's on Exile in Guyville. He's got his wife listening too, so two down, 5 billion to go. I feel like I must fit in and print my own top-10 list too, but first a comment on another's: >From Jason Long: >> 1. Shatter (EIG) >> 2. 6'1" (EIG) >> 3. Johnny Feelgood (WCSE) >> 4. If I Ever Pay You Back (GS) >> 5. Jealousy (WS/J) >> 6. Divorce Song (EIG) >> 7. Headache (WCSE) >> 8. Mesmerizing (EIG) >> 9. Fuck And Run (EIG) >>10. Stratford-On-Guy (EIG) I feel I've found a kindred soul. I've never seen another list with Shatter at the top. That song just kicks my ass everytime I listen to it. The guitar in that song is so emotional, and the lyrics and vocal line perfectly complement the rest of the song. It really speaks to me on a personal level. It is that quality I try to emulate in my own songwriting, to make each song an emotional statement, something from within myself both musically and lyrically. Several of Liz's songs have that quality. Anyway, my own list: 1) Shatter 2) 6'1" 3) Mesmerizing 4) Nashville 5) In Love With Yourself 6) Stuck on an Island 7) Stratford-on-Guy 8) Gunshy 9) Divorce Song* 10) Animal Girl * A special note on Divorce Song. I haven't played any gigs in more than a year, but when I had a band (for what seemed like about a microsecond), we did a rockin version of Divorce Song. Using the GirlySound version more as a template than the EIG version, I rewrote it to be really loud. The whole song was drowning in overamplified electric guitar, with harmonics on lots of the chords. In contrast, I sang the lyrics softly and kind of in the background. The effect I was trying to show was the voice of the person telling the story being somewhat ignored by the person its being told to, plus it just sounded really cool. Think "Let Me In" from REM's Monster and you're close. I always told people to buy Liz Phair CDs at every gig. Finally, my own personal Liz story. My former roomate (and former bandmate) Aaron Hadley used to go to school at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. In his dorm as a freshman, he lived next door to the younger brother of the drummer for Urge Overkill. They became good friends and one day he invited Aaron to an Urge Overkill party in Chicago. This was in 1994, just before the release of Whip-Smart. They drove up on a Saturday and that night, at his older brother's house, Urge Overkill played a bunch of songs in the living room. Maybe 50 people were there at most. And after they played, Liz Phair played some songs as a favor to her friends in Overkill. In a Living Room. With 50 people. Just Liz and a Guitar. Afterward he talked to her with his friend for a couple of minutes. If I were Aaron I could have died right then and been happy. I met him a year later and his overwhelming impression of the event was how badly Liz could sing. I could have killed him. (I think it was a case of patented Phair-stage-fright) At the time he didn't even know who it was. I gave him EIG to listen to and he didn't realize it was the same person until he recognized some of the songs. Anyway, he's no Liz Phair fan (or Urge Overkill fan, although he still keeps in touch with the drummer's brother). Point is, he didn't deserve to be there. It should have been me - GOD, I SAY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME! OK, enough of my blathering. I hope I was entertaining enough to make up for the length of this post.
