Unfortunately, I won't be returning to America until after she has toured but I didn't leave until just after her album was released so I guess that makes up for some of it. Anyway, I saw her in the end of 93 or beginning of 94 and was wondering how much she may have changed. The biggest question is that when I saw her, she had her guitar hooked up to a gorilla amp with a mic in front of that which connected it to the main amps (a la Cheap Trick). Does she still do this? Thanks, Gabriel As a side note, the only service that I can use here is AOL which I hate but I must apologize if this message is sent twice since AOL deems it necessary to do this to make up for the email of mine which it loses. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 08:16:06 EDT From: Gabepet@aol.com Subject: A question... I'm not getting much done here at work, but it's much more interesting to read everyone's thoughts on Ms. Phair. Anyway, FYI if anyone still cares about the age question, I'm 32 (gonna be 33 next month) and have been a Liz fan for about 3 years. I agree with those who are surprised that junior high/high schoolers are into Liz - if I had been that age when her stuff first came out, I might have liked it, but I doubt I would have really understood it. No offense to that age group, but I think the more life experience you have, the more meaning you find in Liz's work. I agree with Sally Johnstone - most of the younger people I know are into Marilyn Manson and similar dark extreme stuff. I've tried to turn on a few friends to Liz with no luck. I've felt like a lone fan in a vacuum until joining this list - a pleasant discovery that so many of you are as crazy about her music as I am! I guess I don't watch enough TV because I've never seen any of Liz's videos - - this really rankles me, because I love the video art form (as long as I can listen to a song first, before seeing someone else's visual interpretation of it). Someone recently posted that they have all her videos, plus interviews, etc. on a 2-hour videotape - sorry, I don't remember who that was, but could you privately e-mail me? I'm interested in getting it. A couple final comments: Liz's music is so liberating! My boyfriend derisively calls it "girly music" and I shoot back, "EXACTLY!" (He's seen the video for Supernova, and I haven't - life is not phair.) Fran, even if you don't like Chopsticks, wouldn't you agree that it's the most perfect snapshot of a one-night stand? Thanks for listening! Or better yet, if I'm lucky, watch MTV and hope that I see it! <> Um, I like this song cuz it was one of the first songs I heard of Liz and it wasn't until I bought EIG that it was hers. I first heard it in my sis's car three years ago. <> I agree 100 percent! I love the rest of the song, but spelling the word out...um...? <> Ok, it is your opinion, but I still can't quite get the connection here. I see Liz actually sings and Courtney, I know yells and screams a lot. I haven't gotten a chance to pick up Hole's new album to see how good it is. Anyways, that's my little thought on some things that was on the last digest. Hopefully, I can recruit some of my friends around here to listen to Liz! They kinda suck how they won't take the time to listen to a cd or two of the music I like, but here I am, more than happy to listen to their music. Something's not right! Anyways, I was lucky enough to get one of my friends to listen to four songs of Liz from WCSE and she liked Perfect World and Johnny Feelgood. She thought the title of Polyester Bride was kind of funny. Dear Micheal, You said you don't know if you can be as loose as you need to be if you take your young'n along. So what will you do different if she's not there? Unfortunately my tape was unceremoniously taken from me by some guy backstage, where I was still rolling tape, hoping to get some of Liz's conversation down for posterity. Afterwards I asked Liz if she minded me taping, and she said she didn't mind, but I got caught, so there was nothing she could do. I remember hearing the cd on a college radio station the week it was released and loved the two songs I heard so much that I left work and went out and found EIG. My wife is twenty eight and never even heard of Liz Phair until she met me a little over three years ago. Age is irrelevant; it just boils down to what turns you on. Most people my age don't have time to sit down and listen to a cd. If music is important to you you'll gravitate towards what music it is that makes you happy. Don't be paranoiod that you're either to old or to young to like Liz Phair. Just run with her if she makes you happy. The sex kitten in a blue slip on the cover of Rolling Stone. That look ‹ those lips. And in person, she was every bit the kewpie doll, her dreamy blue eyes full of both wonder and knowing. But a pouty lower lip does not a rock & roll star make, especially one whose 1993 Matador indie breakthrough, Exile in Guyville, was full of prime Chrissie Hynde bravado. Hours later, looking like Polynesian Spice high up on the main stage, Phair seemed more a mannequin than a headliner. As her set wore on, however, through one frank confessional after another, from "Never Said" and "Divorce Song" to "Supernova" and songs like "Polyester Bride" and "Shitloads of Money" from Phair's new, sophomore-slump rebound whitechocolatespaceegg, the Chicago chick who penned "Fuck and Run" stepped into her persona and proved those songs and hooks are no accident. I guess we can age and stay hip at the same time. My first encounter with Liz goes back to Exile, when after hearing Stratford On Guy on a little tinny-sounding radio at work and hearing the accolades of the disk jockey, I rushed out and bought the cassette--fell in love and played it incessantly. My favorite memories from that time--playing the middle section of Strange Loop over and over. One of my all time favorite album closers. I'm looking forward to the Chicago show. I went to Lilith specifically to see Liz and had a great time. I got busted by a security guard half my age, for leaving the lawn and trying to stand down by the pavillion. That was pretty cool. The magazine PULSE that Tower Records puts out has Liz Phair on it's August edition's cover plus a long interview /talk between Kim Gordon and Liz. September's edition of Raygun has a wcse review. The best one is the September issue of Detour-it features an article on Liz Phair with a great picture and then another article on Cameron Joy who wrote a book...YES A BOOK!!!!! on Liz Phair titled The Last Rock Star Book, subtitled Liz Phair; a Rant. It is put out by Verse Chorus Press and I haven't had success finding it in bookstores but it can be ordered over the phone through Barnes and Noble by calling 1-800-THE-BOOK. It's $14.95 and 224 pages. I have yet to order it, but will soon. East Coast hours for calling to place orders are 9a.m.-9p.m. & West Coast hours 6a.m. to 6 p.m. In the October issue of Details there is a 2 page article on Liz with another great photo. If anyone else knows of any magazines that are recently available and feature Liz, can you please share with the list?
