I shall be at the KingCat September 28 and, Jason, I believe it is I you recollect as intending to take my 16 -year old daughter.. and I am not her mother. I am having second thoughts about taking her -- should I or shouldn't I ? Both she and her younger sister have been alternately amused, delighted, and perhaps offended for four years now as I burn up Exile in Guyville in the car tapedeck. Occasionally I fail to knock the volume down on just a few select lyrics. If she goes, she may primarily watch me watching Liz and I am suddenly having doubts I can be as loose as needs be to fully appreciate the momentous occasion (she was not amused by Bob Dylan on her 12th birthday). She recognizes, however, the momentousness of it all from my point of view and considers it an honor -- so therein lies the dilemma. GET OFF your duffs and forget about whether Bill should be impeached: WHAT should I do! It's all downhill from here. A few people have seemed embarassed to say that they have only been listening for a few months or so. I think that there's something to be said to pick up on her music so quickly and to end up buying her whole collection within a few weeks. I don't listen to radio so I have yet to hear her anywhere except my stereo and with friends. The only reason that I purchased it in the first place is that I was working at a small record store and we received Exile and had never heard of it so we weren't sure what to place it under. After looking at it, we ruled out country or jazz or whatever but couldn't tell if it was rock or alternative (which is so vague that I still don't know). At one point the question came up 'is that her nipple?' and after looking at the names of the songs decided that the best way to deal with this question was to purchase the only copy and 1) be able to listen to it and find out and 2) not have to categorize it until it arrives again next week. So I bought it and we ended up loving it. Our store had our own Liz Phair campaign to get people to buy it, recommending it to anyone who looked unsure of what to purchase. Eventually, I saw her in various publications and the Village Voice named Exile album of the year (along with a few other places) but I don't know if I would have ever gotten into her if not by chance. Plus, I almost feel envious of anyone who gets to buy Exile in Guyville and listen to it for the first time. What an album!! As far as meeting her goes, I was able to meet her just by hanging around after the show. We talked to the drummer for a couple minutes and he said that she'd be coming out in a bit. We had drinks together and a really good time. But this was years ago and she went out into the street and caught a cab afterwards so I'm guessing some things have changed since then. Good luck with it! Gabriel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 08:04:02 -0400 From: "Connolly, Michael EMC RSG" Subject: Age thing, club plans Current age 35. If I don't like the name Support System, I think I have the right to say something about it. If this isn't the place to voice opinions on the issue, I don't know what is. I wasn't telling Jason that he had to change the name and I certainly wasn't expecting him to. I know that this a great digest and obviously the owner has the right to name it what he wants. This song is >Chopsticks. You answered your own question. "How can people knock individual Liz songs..." Not saying you knocked one, but "in your book" Chopsticks does not make the grade that the others did, for you. Just like Johnny FeelGood didn't do it for some people...or Uncle ALvarez and so on and so on. Like many of us have said before, just because Liz Phair is deemed our #1 favorite, does not mean we are blind followers. (nothing wrong with those of us who are though, myself included.) People have aversions to individual songs, because we are all individuals. PERSONALLY, I think Chopsticks is a strong song on Whip-Smart, a very haunting beginning, a WONDERFUL opening prelude to Supernova, and a sad, thoughtful story on its own. So there ya go, I guess we are all just individuals with varying tastes....weird concept, eh?Hmmmm... OH - and the SUPPORT SYSTEM new name thing for the list..I like it too!! Kinda like an Alcoholics ANonymous for the Phair addicted!! Or maybe like a Methodone Clinic...it gives us our fix when we're itching for some Liz :) Of course, nothing could be better than the real thing (Seeing her live), but this list sure does suffice during all the long "in betweens" for us addicts. I normally just read it and keep my thoughts to myself since I have a really hard time explaining myself in words(especially the internet)and getting my point across online. But as far as this whole age thing goes, I had to post my thoughts on it: I got into Liz four years ago, which would've made me 11 when I got into her music. I remember I stayed home from school one day 'cause I was sick and I was watching MTV. This video comes on called Supernova by this lady named Liz Phair. The song jammed and I became obsessed with the song. I asked everyone I knew if they'd ever heard of her and nobody knew who the hell I was talking about. So, for Christmas that year I got Whip-Smart(thanks mom)and I've just about worn out the cd. It totally became my obsession. So I got on the internet and found out info about Liz. I found out that she'd made an album before Whip called Exile In Guyville, so I looked everywhere for that cd. The problem was: I live in Mississippi and I couldn't find it anywhere for two years. One day, a friend and I were in a record store and I saw it and I COMPLETELY flipped out. And, of course, I had no money on me and my friend wasn't about to but it for me. So, again, my mom(coolest lady ever)sprung the money for me to get the cd. If I thought Whip-Smart was excellent, I had no idea what Exile was about to do for me. It still remains my favourite cd ever. I always try to get my friends into her, but they're never really interested so Liz is my personal obsession and I make it very clear to everyone how much I love Liz's music:) I can't really get into Alanis or Paula Cole 'cause I've always thought Liz's music was just so much better than their's. It just has always seemed more real and being a 15-year old teenage girl, I can definitely relate to a song like Flower or Supernova much more than Hand in my Pocket or Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?:) So, yes I'm only 15 and, yes, I got into Liz when I was only 11 and, yes, I've never seen Liz live 'cause I live in Mississippi and, yes, at 15, I'm just a baby, but I guarantee all of you that I am just as much a devoted Liz phan as any of you:) Well, that's about it for me so thank you for listening and talk to ya soon ya freaks:) Hugs and Love, *Rollergirl* "black magick panther always gets what she's after; the blonde with lobotomy eyes"-Thrill Kill Kult "I'm my own king and this is my castle"-Beastie Boys(luv them) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of support-system-digest V1 #11 ***********************************
