I would prefer that it would stay the same week to week so that I don't have to question who's sending me mail but where is the significance? Perhaps if it has a better name, more people would be apt to join the list but do you want people on the list because of the name? Maybe if you share your email account with someone who you think questions your coolness, it might be a problem but I don't think that problem would be solved by changing the name of the list. Basically, the name isn't offensive and it is Liz-related so it's fine by me. Moving on to the age topic: I got into Liz in high school when Exile came out but my dad was into her almost as much as I was (although he found out about her through me). I even got her autograph for him. So I think that it might be a younger crowd in general but that would be because we're still looking for new music where older people have usually found there niche already. I don't mean that in a bad way but I know that I'm not looking around for new bands nearly as much as I used to. That's my take on all this, Gabriel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 11:06:24 -0400 From: ggrocks@erols.com Subject: Re: The Age Thing >Who was it that thinks the majority of Liz Phair fans >are under 21? Thanks, Robin. > WEll, I just made it under the wire being the grand old age of 21 years old and 4 months :) If you ask me, I would say the majority of Liz Phair fans are over 18 years old. All the Liz fans that I am personally aquainted with here in the lovely Windsor Ontario, Canada are all over 21...I have a little sister (age 15) and her and her friends have no clue who the hell Liz is...but thanks to me, I now have a very informed lil' sibling :) She shall be the "know all" of decent music for her generation :) again, I am sure Liz has many fans under the age of 18, but sitting in at her concert in 1993 - the crowd was VERY over 18+, and judging by the majority of people on the list, I would say 18+ wins...Liz kinda came from that time frame too...I mean, when she came out, I was 16, so I kinda grew up with her. All the 16 year olds NOW were only 10 or 11 back then...so Exile In Guyville was like an album of highschool anthems for me...so I have a nostalgic connection to that album, because it was the music I became an "adult" to. WEll, I guess technically I am an adult, but I know I'm still just a rocker kid deep down, just like in highschool :) BTW - The 1998 music boom is still blowing me away... WCSE was by far my high point, but: Hole's "Celebrity Skin" is just orgasmic beyond belief...very much more poppier, but I love it..."AWFUL", "BOYS ON THE RADIO" and "HEAVEN TONIGHT" just blow me away. Juliana Hatfield's "BED" is a gift from the Alterna-God of MUsic as well.. "Swan Song" and "Bad Day" are just instant classics for me. God bless 1998, and God Bless THe SpaceEGG - that's all i have to say. I'm 26, and I first heard Liz's simple but structured guitar chords and nonconforming lyrics on "6"1'" in my college dorm room, circa 1993. I hardly believe that most of the "young" (yet ambitious) Liz fans out there started listening to "Guyville" (or "Whip-Smart," for that matter) at age 15 or 16. There was just too much other good music out there at the time "Guyville" was released for Liz to break through into the mainstream. If you think back to 1993, bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc. were all extremely popular. You also had groups like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against The Machine stealing headlines. I think the popularity of those bands (and many others) is one reason Liz didn't really catch on with a lot of young people at that time. Because I was in college, I was lucky to have a radio station on campus that would play ANYTHING if it was deemed "alternative," and thus my admiration for Liz was born. Most people I know or talk to only know Liz from "Supernova" because it is one of the only songs before "spaceegg" that got regular radio and MTV exposure. The fact that "Polyester Bride" got major air-time in August, coupled with Liz's Lilith Fair shows and fall concert schedule is surely contributing heavily to her fan base. I'm presuming that most of these "new" fans are in the 16-22 age range. We "older" fans can take comfort in the fact that we were listening to Liz before "spaceegg" or even "Whip-Smart," and we are hearing Liz's creative process progress and expand. I personally like 'Guyville" more than "spaceegg," but "spaceegg" sounds more musical - lyrically and instrumentally - and more polished. I can't say that I expected the new album to sound like it does, but I had a feeling that it would be quite different from "Guyville." At the same time, I think "spaceegg" is a tremendous album, and I believe that her next album (knock on wood) could possibly transcend all of her earlier works. The only advice I have for "new" fans of Liz Phair who like "spaceegg" is to buy "Exile In Guyville" and "Juvenilia" and see her in concert this fall. And as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter at all how old you are to enjoy ANY music - and you certainly don't have to feel like an "outcast." Rub the cleaner well onto the scratches from centre to outer edge of disk (or vice versa) NOT around the disk in the direction of the scratches - that's most important. The aim is to remove the sharp edges from the scratches. When its smoothed out a bit clean off all the cleaner with warm (tap) water and dry with a clean towel before putting it back into the CD player (actually in your case I'd use someone else's CD player). If it doesn't work completely the first time, try again and rub harder. The CD ends up looking worse because of the fine scratches the cleaner causes but don't worry, these don't intefer with the laser beam like the deep ones your CD has caused. A super-cool, absurdly-dedicated dude (Jase) graciously does A TON of work for all of us just for the fuck of it. And you MoFos are about to complain...shame, shame, shame. (ps. Support System is one of Liz's best songs, by the way.) 2. I am going to be 26 in December. Started listening to (and obsessing on) Ms. Phair at age 22. Age doesn't matter. I listened to awesome shit in high school (not to toot my own horn), and I imagine that most of you had good musical taste for a long time now. By the way, the person who got me into Liz just turned 40. 3. Patrick had a posting recently about the Lillith Fair and mentioned some foolish, idiotic reporter who questioned whether Liz was a tag along at that estrogen-fest. I went to one of the shows and let me tell you this: Liz Phair is 25,000 times better than Sarah McMoneyMaker, Natalie Myskin-hasn't-seen-sun-in yearsMerchant, or any of those other "female rockers." When Liz says stuff like, "they [natalie and sarah] have the whole package... they are true performers, they have the look and everything" (or whatever it is she said along those lines in Newsweek), IT BLOWS MY MIND. LIZ, if you are out there, listen: Your music is more creative, your sound more distinct, your lyrics far more engaging and dynamic, and your whole general aura way more hip/cool/individualistic than any of those Lillith chicks. I think I can solve world hunger long before I can ever understand how people enjoy that other Lillith crap over Liz Phair. Baffling. 4. Some one wants a bootleg of upcoming performances prior to their happening...can some one explain this to me, or am I the only one who thinks that the concert will have to take place prior to attaining a bootleg? 5. Speaking of bootlegs, after I whined and cried on my last posting about Girlysound "hogs," several people have stepped up and been very cool in helping me out...muchos thanks to Derek, Jennifer, Jeffrey, and others who offered their services. You dudes are rad (yeah!). Steve, on the other hand is ... (just joking, steve) 6. As someone has already said...Liz is at Roseland on 10/8/98...get in touch with Ticketmaster. 7. How can people knock individual Liz songs (or even whole albums, for that matter, like those who dis Whipsmart)??!!?? I don't get it... all these people write in not liking Johnny Feelgood, or Uncle Alvarez, or Shitloads of Money, or whatever. I can't understand how or why people have such aversions to individual songs from an artist who they portend to be their favorite. There is only one song from Liz's ENTIRE CATALOGUE that is not a Four Star, A+, numero uno song in my book (but it is still better that anything else anyone else is doing). This song is Chopsticks. I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend, and I'm sorry if this posting sounds too negative or agressive...there are just some things that irritate me. I apologize.
